Mitsuharu Misawa Dead
Posted by Ramon Aranda on 06.13.2009

According to f4wonline.com Mitsuhara Misawa died Saturday night in Japan at the age of 47. Reports say that Misawa was teaming up with Go Shiozaki against Bison Smith and Akitoshi Saito for the GHC tag team belts when a back suplex in which he landed on his head, left Misawa unconscious in the ring.

He was taken to the hospital shortly thereafter but doctors were unable to revive him as his heart stopped while in the ring.

More details to follow.

This could have happened to anyone, even Orton after Kennedy botched that suplex. Hopefully with this death taken place in Japan the media won't prescute pro-wrestling again.

RIP to a great Wrestler.

I'm truly saddened by this loss. And he was days from turning 48.

Thank You, Misawa. Rest in Peace

Of course, it wasn't Saito's fault, so let's stop bitching about him being careless in the ring.

The important thing here is: Misawa, Rest In Peace.

Im sad to say, although it isnt as important as this mans life right now (although some would argue wrestling was Misawa's life), this is a huge blow to NOAH. Earlier this year they lost their TV deal and combined with declining attendance figures and now this, it doesnt look good sadly for the company.

It doesnt matter right now because a man is gone and he will forever be remembered for giving credibility to a sport that needed it desperately at times. He was a world class wrestler. Thank you Misawa for all you gave to wrestling and its fans. RIP.

R.I.P. Misawa.

I'm only a fan of mainstream U.S. wrestling, and I don't know much about Japan. That said, I do recognze Misawa's name as one of the all-time greats. I once saw his match with Kawada, and it was one of the most amazing displays I'd ever seen.

Wasn't this also the same promotion that was just wrapped up in that animal abuse scandal where a few of their wrestlers were caught on camera literally choking a monkey until it passed out? If so, they're having a string of really shitty luck.

It is hard to believe, but he was destined to end up dead in the ring given the way he fought over the past decades. How they did was stunning, particulary those suplexes. There is no wonder the damage he had accumulated since 90's when that devastating style was created in all-japan organization took toll on him. It is really sad but fair to say it went too far. In japan, pro-wrestling is almost done as mma has established. This incident would accelate the trend more than ever, because he has been an icon of it. RIP Misawa.

That is such sad news.

I've watched lots and lots of Misawa's matches in All-Japan in the 90s and they are some of the best matches of all time.
Thank you very much for your incredible efforts, Msawa-san.

I read in another report, the move wasn't botched he just went into cardiac arrest. While they were doing CPR in the ring, the hushed fans then did a small Misawa chant.

The idea of fans chanting your name while you lay there dying in the ring just seems so incredibly fucked up to me. This reminds me of when Ric Flair proclaimed he'd wrestle until he'd drop dead in the ring.

I believe this marks the first time someone has ever died mid-match, no?

The more dangerous it is, the more the audience ask. The westling should get back to more classical style, otherwise someone would be the next victim. No more casuality. Hopefully it would be a blessing in disguise.

R.I.P. Misawa. This is a shocking & tragic loss for Puro fans the world over, one of the greatest wrestlers ever gone, just like that :(

I hope NOAH's not done, they need to find a way to keep it going in his memory

Posted By: Guest#9814 (Guest)  on June 13, 2009 at 01:39 PM

Not to nit-pick but comparing Misawa to Raven or Finlay for fans unfamiliar to his work is ridiculous. That would lead people to think he's basically a mid-card guy. And that's horribly inaccurate. He's definitely within the top ten draws ever in Japan and probably in the top five in the last 15 years. He was THE consistent main-eventer (Kawada and Kobashi both weren't main eventing in 1990 or 1991 on a regular basis) throughout the 90s in AJPW when they were, in-ring, the best company in the world. A better comparison would probably be Bret Hart especially if you're looking at someone who was hitting his peak about the same time as Misawa.

Okay, I'm not sure how this comment is suppose to be taken, but it comes off really cold hearted. Maybe if, someone important in your life was taken we could post that on here and say the same. LOL, when your dead we will all LOL, but for something like this to happen to a Japaneese great, this is nothing to laugh about.

The fact of the matter is, Misawa was one of the greats in Japan and will be missed dearly. R.I.P. Misawa, you were one of my favorites to watch from Japan and in wresting. The fact is he will be missed by true wrestling fans and people that like the entertainment for what it is suppose to be, wrestling, not promos galore and praise horrible in ring workers like Cena and the entire RAW roster. But the fact remains, whether you liked him, hated him, or didn't know him, he will be missed and it is a sad day for wrestling. Those are the facts, deal with it.

Truly one of the saddest days in wrestling history. I spent a few years in Japan as a teenager and was completely blown away by the greatness that was Misawa. Here's to Tiger Drivers ('91) and elbows being thrown all over the place for the angels to see.

I'm very sad to hear of this loss for wrestling. R.I.P. Misawa.

I believe it was a botched back suplex on Randy Orton that cost Kennedy his job. I guess this just goes to show how each move needs to be done as safely as possible.

Although it is hard to find a silver lining in any death, hopefully this will lead some North American wrestling fans to see the work of marvelous performer.

He was an artist in the ring. Absolutely amazing. His moveset, his ability to work against any opponent in any style of match... he was one of a kind. He ALWAYS delivered and always entertained the hell out of me.

R.I.P. Misawa. Thanks for the entertainment.

1st and foremost my sincere condolences to the family on this aweful occurence,he was a true credit to the sport of pro-wrestling,secondly
I certainly hope that fans & non-fans alike can realize the very REAL aspect of the risk that is involved when a wrestler competes and performs for any crowd be it 50, 5000 or 50,000 in attendance. They truly do deserve the respect of their peers for the incredible physical & phsycological ability that a pro-wrestler has to have to compete in that squared circle, this is a sad day in sports history and i hope that the mainline media gives it the proper attention and respect that this great deserves...RIP..

He was Tiger Mask 2 after Sayama who said:
I feel like I lost my blood brother. Last year even it was a tag team match, we fought first time getting over the organizational barrier. He was vibrant at that time so it has not sunk in yet. It is a shame ther was a lot more that could have been done to revive proresu.

First off, RIP Misawa. I'm relatively unfamiliar with his work, but I still have respect for anyone who wrestles and entertains for a living.

So where are the people who were blasting CZW over the stabbing incident? Here's a staple move of purereso between heavily trained veterans... Saito who did the move, who debuted back in 1990.

Feel free to blast me over this.

"I read in another report, the move wasn't botched he just went into cardiac arrest. While they were doing CPR in the ring, the hushed fans then did a small Misawa chant.

The idea of fans chanting your name while you lay there dying in the ring just seems so incredibly fucked up to me. This reminds me of when Ric Flair proclaimed he'd wrestle until he'd drop dead in the ring."

What's sad is that this is pretty much how the movie The Wrestlers ends. Obviously, Rourke's character wanted to go out that way but still, I think for some guys dying in the ring isn't such a nightmare. I know Flair probably dreams about it.

Misawa you will be missed greatly, thanks for the great matches. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

RIP Misawa. I really enjoyed watching tapes of Misawa from All Japan in the 90's. So many great matches with Kawada, Hansen, and others. Its a shame he died in the ring like that. God bless him and my thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Not familair to his work, but I know that he was a legend in the sport. This is an instance where my attention will go to him alot more and I'll try to watch his greatest work.

RIP Misawa.

Like some other posters on here I wasn't overly familiar with Misawa but even I know this is sad news. Somebody earlier compared him to Bret Hart and that's high praise indeed.

"is this the first official in match fatality?"

Posted By: Drue Phoenix (Guest) on June 13, 2009 at 01:58 PM

No, check out Trish Stratus/Bradshaw vs. Jackie Gayda/Chris Nowinski from Raw a few years back. She killed any chance of her being considered a decent female wrestler.

He'll make a great main eventer in heaven.

RIP Misawa.

Unfortunately it was a botched back suplex what caused it. Even Misawa who was dubbed "a defensive genius" could not handle it properly. What surprised me was that they did not have any doctors for emergency. There happened to have been one among the audience who gave him CPR.
The movie, "the wrestler", was released in Japan the day he passed away in the ring. What a coincidence.

fuck, after landing on his head from ganso bombs, a pissy back suplex killed him. damn. RIP wrestling legend.

hmmm, since he died so suddenly, who takes over NOAH now? will it be a re-hash of AJPW when Giant Baba died and created an exodus that turned into NOAH? NOAH lost their tv deal and attendance is down... what's to stop say... KENTA & Marufuji from forming a new organization?

That is by far the second funniest thing I have ever read on here.

The funniest is all of these people who don't know or have never seen this guy wrestle pretending to give a crap.

Congrats Zingy for not being one of the phony sycophants.

What is certain is that this was one of the most spectacular incidents that ever happened in the ring. He dedicated himself to proresu and took it to a new level. He did what he loved most and became a martyr. My hat off to him. Thanks.

to actually answer that fatality question.

A sad day in general for wrestling, not just puroresu. Obviously, the question that is coming to everybody's mind is "What about NOAH?" Before we ask that, just take a few minutes to think about Misawa, about the man who opened doors to a world that many of us would never have known otherwise, a true legend in his own regard.

Rest in Peace, Misawa. You will never be forgotten.

Hey, hey, guest#2761, who in the world do you think you are to judge someone and say they will be going to hell. What nerve. There is only one being that can make that judgement. And apparently he owns a gym in Georgia.
