Various News: Why Hogan Never Worked With Jake Roberts, New Storm Column, Lesnar/Steroids
Posted by Ashish on 06.24.2009

- Lance Storm has a new article up where he talks about working under a mask as a surprise this past weekend. Check out the article here.

- StarTribune.com has an article up where Brock Lesnar says he has never taken steroids and that he is "built like a black man." Check out the article here.

- Hulk Hogan was on the Bubba the Love Sponge show last week. When asked about why he never worked a program with Jake Roberts, Hogan said that he was willing to work with him and that the two had a test match at a house show but that Hogan noticed during the match that the crowd was not into it. Hogan took that to mean that Roberts was not a big enough heel to work with him.

"Hogan said that he was willing to work with him and that the two had a test match at a house show but that Hogan noticed during the match that the crowd was not into it."

I heard rumors that it was the other way around. Fans were rooting for Roberts (although being a heel) and officials (and maybe Hogan himself) did not approve of that.

Hogan spent most of his feuding with monsters. The only exceptions he made were a small program with Mr. Perfect and against Savage. Even when he had a program with Dibiase it was mainly to used to get Andre involved.

He never had a feud with Rude, either.

According to Jake's DVD, the crowd was way into it, but they weren't supporting Hogan. WWE didn't want to go against the grain, as they had a lot of money invested in Hogan and Hulkamania. I hate the way Hulk phrases things sometimes.

Gotta love the long string of Hogan lies:

"Crowd wasn't into it" = Crowd was leaning heavily towards Jake which made Hogan look bad

"Toronto was more interested in seeing me leave than watch Warrior celebrate" = Nobody was paying two shits to Hogan when he left as they were soaking in Warrior's surprise victory

"My Hulkamaniacs want me to destroy Sid" = Thank goodness for WWF-post production that was able to dub over the massive cheers Sid was getting for tossing me out of the Royal Rumble and make it sound like he was getting soundly booed

That burmese python was at least 90 feet dude! That Jacob Robertson guy man dude brother couldnt hold my jockstrap man! He was lucky to have been in my 45 foot ring brother! BROTHER! Everyone knows when youre in the ring with me JACK, youre never an equal BROTHER!

Did they say when this was? Perhaps if it was 86 to early 87, Hogan might have a point. However, if it was during the 91-92 run, then Hogan is full of shit, and the lack of heat for that match was probably due to the dying heat for Hogan, who was beginning to wear out his welcome.

Posted By: Michael L (Guest)  on June 24, 2009 at 12:22 AM

yeah Jake wasn't on the same level as King Kong Bundy, Zeus or Akeem.

Posted By: puba516 (Guest)  on June 24, 2009 at 12:24 AM

In other words the crowd were probably pro Jake over Hogan.

Posted By: Andrew Barbarash (Guest)  on June 24, 2009 at 12:24 AM

Funny Hogan said that about Jake because according to, I don't know, EVERYONE ELSE, the crowd was cheering more for Jake than for Hogan. Hogan was still the cash cow at the time and he didn't want to lose his spot to Jake so he didn't go forward with the program.

Normaly I dont mind Hogan but come on, busting of Jake he was 10x the wrestler Hogan ever way. Maybe the Chemistry wasnt there but just to say Jake wasnt good enough. PFFFT

Translation... Jake refused to allow hogan to make him look like a joke and wanted to put on a long match that had ring psychology and emotion. I mean really, one of the most evil heels of all time not as big enough heel? Usually I defend Hogan to a degree, but I distinctly detect the odor of bovine excrement

Posted By: Ben S (Guest)  on June 24, 2009 at 12:32 AM

Oh Hogan. Always revisiting history. The people popped for Jake Roberts DDTing you...get over yourself.

Posted By: Smacks (Guest)  on June 24, 2009 at 12:44 AM

Yeah. Roberts never had any good heel tactics. Ever. The Hulkster was obviously right in squashing the whole deal by gauging reaction from one podunk town.

Hulk Hogan: Rocket Surgeon.

StarTribune.com has an article up where Brock Lesnar says he has never taken steroids and that he is "built like a black man."

Yes. His name is Bobby Lashley.

Oh, and to Hogan's comments...BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

What REALLY happened with Hogan and Roberts was that, even though Jake was a heel and Hogan was Hogan, the crowd chanted "DDT! DDT! DDT!" So they scrapped the angle. That's what I've heard from Jake himself and a few others.

Posted By: KanyonKreist (Registered)  on June 24, 2009 at 01:01 AM

That's funny because I always heard from Jake that the reason he and Hogan never had a run is because more people were cheering for Jake than Hogan during that test match hence Jake's face turn.

Posted By: Puff (Guest)  on June 24, 2009 at 01:02 AM

On his dvd jake roberts said he was getting more cheers then hogan even though he was the heel which is the reason why they didn't do the program. I don't know who to believe but Roberts was quite over as a heel in the 80s but maybe not enough of one I guess.

Must be true!

Brock Lesnar says he has never taken steroids and that he is "built like a black man."

I guess that gives new meaning to the phrase "Black Lesnar."

What does it mean to be "built like a black man?" Chris Rock looks like Brock when he has his shirt off?

Brock=racist and silly

Well the rumor was that Jake the Snake was out more over than Hogan and managment didnt want to risk Hogan's near iconic status being tainted

I experienced Jakes big snake. Give me money Hulk!!!

I thought Hogan said on the Jake Roberts dvd that it was because Roberts was getting some cheers during the match

That actually comes down to the same what Hogan said - Jake wasn't getting enough big of a heel heat, so the feud was nixed. As Jaked himself said on his DVD - Hogan was the goose that was laying golden eggs (for everybody), so why risk killing it.

Hogan is right.People starting to like Mr DDT so not a big heel enough!!Here comes te Smash!!!

Posted By: smash (Guest)  on June 24, 2009 at 04:32 AM

As for these rumors that Roberts received cheers over Hogan, one must consider the source and I'm not talking about Hulk. I would be a little skeptical of anything that came out of Roberts mouth, considering his background.

VINTAGE HOGAN!

Posted By: Flamebrain (Guest)  on June 24, 2009 at 06:59 AM

I think many of you guys may have misinterpreted Hulk's comments, even though you'd have every right to given some of the complete bullshit he's uttered in the past to cover up his backstage politicking. To reiterate what Chris Champion posted early in the threat, but many of you must have skipped over:

"Hogan spent most of his feuding with monsters. The only exceptions he made were a small program with Mr. Perfect and against Savage. Even when he had a program with Dibiase it was mainly to used to get Andre involved.

He never had a feud with Rude, either."

Hogan most likely meant that Jake wasn't a "big enough heel" in stature, not in ability to draw heat. How much did Hogan outweigh Jake by, 75-100 pounds? And what about comparing muscle mass - Hogan's biceps were twice as big as Jake's. Hogan and the higher-ups probably felt that Jake's (alleged) positive fan reaction was more due to a vocal minority of fans rooting for the smaller, conceivably more sympathetic guy and not worth risking what they'd invested in Hulkamania.

Did that make sense for anyone, or was it too long for the dumber people to read?

can anyone tell me when was hogan vs roberts planned? becoz jake was a face in 88-90. or was it in 1991-92, when jake was a hated heel.

Posted By: Guest#0350 (Guest)  on June 24, 2009 at 08:05 AM

Can anyone who was watching "back then" recall whether Jake was getting any sort of a "face" reaction (including DDT chants, etc) when he was working vs. Ricky Steamboat? If I recall, that was the last definite heel program he worked before getting more or less turned for his WM III gig against the Honky Tonk Man.

Posted By: JayMan (Guest)  on June 24, 2009 at 10:49 AM

It has been pretty well documented that in fact Jake was getting the cheers of the crowd and that Hogan and McMahon nixed the idea. Roberts was turned face not long after that.

Posted By: The Coach (Guest)  on June 24, 2009 at 10:57 AM

What is Hogan smoking, "brother"? Roberts was one of the greatest heels of all time and still is. I think Hulkster may have been worried that Roberts would steal his heat - heel or not.

wait a minute. have any of you guys heard that jake was getting more cheers than hogan so they didn't go through with the program?

Hogan did not work with Jake because hogan is a big ass bitch!! He refused to work a CHARITY program with Randy Savage! That's the man who is having his own day???Where is Ric Flair appriciation day??
FUCK HOGAN!!

I was at this house show. It was at the Providence Civic center(now the dunkin donuts arena or something). I used to go to the wwf every last thursday of the month with my dad. Jake did get tons of appluase during the match. Jake blinded hogan with powder and the place went nuts. It was kinda weird.

Posted By: Stinkylicious (Guest)  on June 24, 2009 at 01:37 PM

Yeah, Hogan is a huge liar. Big newsflash. This scumbag just loves rewriting history. I love the fact that his family is all fucked up now.

Posted By: CharlieGoose (Guest)  on June 24, 2009 at 04:37 PM

I'm pretty sure Jake got some serious face pops at WM 2, but then again, that was the Long Island crowd and he was wrestling that jabroni George Wells.

Dragon was defniately a face for that run though. I think Jake and Savage actually had a minor heel-heel program in the north east.

But it all builds to the point, the Bullshitamania is still running wild, I don't blame Hulk for not "going against the grain" but when Hogan was getting fed Killer Khan in the summer of 87, you mean to tell me he was all that much of a bigger monster or over than Snake Roberts?

Guess h'es no longer the gorilla vanilla.

Score 1 for Lesnar racism!

Hogan...just die. u knew that fans would rather see someone with ability instead of u. even if jake didn't have as much ability as...say...ric flair, but the fact is, he was more charismatic and ring savvy than u.

Whatever the reason(s) and who ever you believe, a Hogan/Roberts feud was probably a bad idea anyway.

Hogan was battling "thugs" at the time, and Hogan's wrestling style is usually taking a beating by his opponent for most of the match, then "Hulking up," raking his nails across their back, a few punches then dropping the leg. Pretty formula and a formula that works for the typical 80's thug heel.

But, Roberts wasn't a "thug" -- he was a different heel -- he was evil and a thinking-man's heel.. Roberts was about psychology in the ring. Hell, he cut some of THE best promos in the day too... Hogan would scream and froth at the mouth while Roberts would just calmly explain how he was going to destroy you and feel your remains to Damien. It was classic.

The two personalities and wrestling styles were just too opposite ends of the spectrum to get much juice from. And back then, they would milk feuds a long time to not only sell PPVs that would happen every other month, but, almost daily houseshows too.

It's He-Said - He-Said, but, it ended up for the best at the end of the day.

Jesus Christ, I don't know who likes to rewrite pro-wrestling history more, Hulk Hogan or Vince McMahon. I'll say Hogan because he has his head up his ass more of the time. I remember hearing his unique take on the Montreal Screwjob and the only part of that he had correct was that it involved Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels.

Hogan is such an asshole sometimes.

I can't believe that Hogan would not remember something the ACTUAL way that it happened!

Everybody knows that Hogan would NEVER change the story to make himself look like the good guy!!

I think it was because Roberts wasn't training hard enough or saying enough prayers to be in the ring with the almighty Thuner Li...er..Hulk Hogan!!

Of course, Jake Roberts was certainly popping enough "vitamins" and "running wild" enough for the both of 'em!

Posted By: No way! (Guest)  on June 25, 2009 at 04:35 PM

Didn't Brock have steroid charges prior to entering WWE, and had Wellness Policy infractions while in the WWE also?

Posted By: RDog (Guest)  on June 25, 2009 at 10:43 PM

Roberts wasn't a huge star like Hogan. He was the good wrestler, but he hasn't this magic. Hogan always has unbeliveble magic, so people still loves him.

Hulk Hogan is probably the greatest wrestler of all time. Jake isn't...
