Jim Ross Speaks On Success In Wrestling, Need For New Main Eventers, Piper's DUI, More
Posted by Ashish on 07.03.2009
New blog from JR!
Jim Ross has a new blog entry up. Highlights are below.
On the Smackdown/ECW locker room dynamic: The Smackdown/ECW locker room dynamic seems to have changed significantly over the past few weeks and especially after the big "trade" of earlier in the week. The vets are doing a good job delivering the steak while the young talents are still searching to find their personas and what it is going to take to make themselves successful.
On being successful in wrestling: Success in wrestling comes through wrestling aggressively and by using logic in the ring. It also, more importantly and especially in the technological age where there is seemingly an abundance of "experts," doesn't come quickly. Patience is a virtue but also is a fleeting thing in our impatient, instant gratification oriented society.
On Dolph Ziggler & John Morrison moving up: As it relates to Friday Night Smackdown, it seems as if Dolph Ziggler and John Morrison are lining up to be the next talents to move up the ladder. Both are getting more opportunities to shine and are doing a nice job of producing positive results.
On the need to add new main eventers: I can't remember a era within the business that there has been more of a need to add to the main event mix and to create new top level bouts especially on PPV. This goes along with creating new stars which one would think is logically every wrestling organization's top priority.
On Roddy Piper's DUI: I'm not condoning that anyone drink and drive but it sure seems as if some are making a federal case about Roddy Piper's recent arrest for an apparent DUI. Again, don't get me wrong, DUI's are serious business, but luckily there was no accident associated with this incident and no one was injured. I'm sure that Roddy feels as badly as one could feel about this embarrassing matter but everyone makes mistakes in life. I text Roddy this weekend, before the arrest for the record, and he was in amazingly, positive spirits and we largely discussed family and our health. I have great respect for Roddy Piper and I hope this issue can be resolved quickly and that history won't be repeating itself. I, too, traveled down this road many years ago and learned a valuable lesson in the process.
It's too bad that MVP and The Miz seemed poised to become main-eventers but keep finding the heel of the man on their necks, holding them down.

then maybe you should tell vinny mac to quit jobbing the entire roster to hhh and super cena

Who needs new main eventers when you can have HHH-Orton for the 8000th time?
I'm sure it's just a coincidence that when HHH returned to Raw, it started sucking again. I was still a fan of his up until recently but I was amazed how awesome Raw was for the several months he was gone. The last straw was the battle royal where they made MVP and Miz look like total jobbers.

Sounds like JR knows the need for Vince and Co to stop building the show around the SAME guys over and over again and take the potential ratings hit in getting guys over. CM Punk is already there, but there is no reason why Raw shouldn't be having their own version of Punk on their side in the terms of a guy being put over....

Vince?? Hello??? Are you listening??

Remember Piper took a jab at Santino about his DUI?

Thanks you JR for reminding us that none of us are "experts." A handful of experts like you should tell the rest of us what is good and what we should like, bc we are obviously wrong.
And yet...if lowly, stupid internet nerds like me were allowed to book, the main event issue would be solved.
Why does the man blog if every blog s used to spew venom at the IWC?

I think I've lost respect for Jim Ross now knowing that he's the type of person who believes that "text" is the past tense of "tex" (apparently?). "I just love texing people. I've text 8 people already today!"
Damn my English degree!

Get rid of HHH then MVP and Miz will flourish

New main evnet talent is gonna be great...when they get over with the fans. There is no magic 'HE'S OVER' wand to wave. I think that no matter what we think the Miz or MVP or whomever else we are marking out for (MORRISON!!) I think they coul all stand to do some more work in ring and on mic to get there. Beating Cena is cool but can they run with it yet? Remains to be seen but I think this is the best mid card the WWE has had in 5 years which is all good for me. I just like to swee the in ring action...the mic work can not be on the show at all if the matches are good enough.

Ross talked about helping transform Grish into a great announcer. Grish has improved by leaps and bounds, but still needs more experience on the mic in order to become a great announcer.

What are you going on about?
text
Noun
1. the main body of a printed or written work as distinct from items such as notes or illustrations
2. any written material, such as words displayed on a visual display unit
3. the written version of the words of a speech, broadcast or recording: an advance text of the remarks the president will deliver tonight
4. a short passage of the Bible used as a starting point for a sermon
5. a book required as part of a course of study: shelves full of sociology texts
Verb
1. to send (a text message) by mobile phone
2. to contact (a person) by means of a text message [Latin texere to compose]
You can say it both ways.

I am enjoying SD wrestlers slowly building main eventers like Morrison but MVP needs to be pushed now, if he ends up like Shelton I'll be upset. Why do people think Miz is ready for the main event? Maybe the US title would be good for the mark magnet.

By "experts", he probably means know-it-all fans who have never owned any business beyond a lemonade stand but somehow believe they are more capable of running a near-billion dollar business better than a man who has been doing it successfully for almost 30 years. Sounds like you're probably an "expert".

WWE is so boring. why can't Briscoe die already

Boy that english degree is even worse than I thought it would be. Apparently as soon as you get it, you lose the ability to check dictionaries.
Posted By: Guest#1059 (Guest) on July 03, 2009 at 07:16 PM
People need to remember that wrestling is scripted. Saying that a guy with awesome in ring and mic skills "cant draw" or "isnt over" is just politics. Good writing can get any guy over! The old guard just wont admit that.
Writers make us care about a wrestler and get him over. And yes, fans know what they want. They dont need to be told.

I don't even have an English degree. I just like to feel self-important.

An era, not a era... for the love of BBQ sauce!!!

Hey WHAT?
The past tense of text is texted.
"I texted my friend earlier."
Not, "I text my friend earlier."
Of course, texting is the stupidest thing I've ever heard of. You're holding a device designed to call someone and TALK to, not type and misspell words on tiny little buttons over and over again. It's just so much easier to just dial 7 digits and say what you want to say. Ah well, the continuing dumbing down of America...

Way to be a mark and defend a guy that insults you. The thing is that the company is not successful right now. It would be more successful if it were giving the fans what they want to see, but Vince, JR, HHH and company all think they know what is best for us.
Apparently not. To suggest that only people in the business can adequately critique and judge it is just dumb.
I, for one, have three degrees more than Vinnie Mac...but have never run more than a lemonade stand and dont know what is best.
I could not come up with genius moves like Katie Vick, etc.

JR, the Superstars work for the WWE, not Steak-Out.

Dammit JR, you have caused 411 to have an argument about English. To weigh in on this, JR is right. He may not have meant it like that, but he is right anyway. Webster's Dictionary FTW.
Uh oh, I hope saying FTW doesn't cause another shit storm like it did 2 weeks ago.

WWE grosses more than half a billion dollars a year, Wrestlemania 25 set a record by taking in more than $52 million in one day, and its international tours are doing record business. But somehow you think the company is not successful simply because you don't like some of the storylines. I hope none of your degrees are in Economics or Business.
I never suggested that you had to be in the business to adequately critique or judge it. A little reading comprehension goes a long way.
By the way, the Katie Vick storyline lasted for one month seven years ago. It's time to move on.

JR is not right.
"I text my friend yesterday" -- this is an incorrect statement with regards to grammar/syntax.
Morons.

Oh no! I am vanquished by a WWE mark with wikipedia-researched statistics and a claim that I cant comprehend his amazingly logical defense of a man that hates him.

Wonder if Bob is Bob Holly...has to be somebody associated with WWE to be such a mark.
Posted By: Guest#1056 (Guest) on July 04, 2009 at 11:57 PM
If WWE is doing so great right now...why do all reports convey a general sense of dissatisfaction? BC success is comparative and even if the company makes blahblabblah a PPV or year, wrestling is not as big as it once was. Reports say Vin man is never happy these days.
And, anecdotally speaking, if they are so great right now....why do we get 27 bumps a show to tell us that WWE last week was more watched than any programs on Animal Planet, the Farm Network, Cartoon Network West, and Telemundo?
Successful companies dont constantly promote in program to the people that are already watching. If you think wrestling is doing great today just based on numbers then you, sir, are wrong. Wrestling has not been successful per se for seven plus years.
Do successful companies cut half their rosters in one year? Don't think so.
I could go on, but eh...no convincing Vince worshippers, maybe one day you can join his "club," another wonderful idea of his that makes for wonderful TV.

Sorry man, I don't know what I was thinking. I mean, actually pointing out how successful the company is? I don't know what came over me. But don't worry, I'm back to typical IWC mode:
WWE sucks. The writers suck. Triple H sucks. John Cena sucks. Vince McMahon sucks. And he's stupid. I could book a better show with one hand tied behind my back.
I feel much better now. Now I have the acceptance of guys like NotRob who complain nonstop about WWE, even at 11:52 pm on the 4th of July.
