WWE News: Recent Buyrates, Second Quarter Conference Call
Posted by Larry Csonka on 07.14.2009

- According to Pwinsider.com, here are the latest WWE PPV buyrates. The numbers are down from both 2007 and 2008, which is why WWE has been working so hard to "fix" their PPV business through rebranding:

* WrestleMania – 970,000
* Backlash – 185,000
* Judgment Day – 235,000

- WWE sent out the following press release, regarding their 2nd quarter conference call…

For the record, those are worldwide buyrates too. Backlash in particular seems REALLY low even coming off Mania (I think it did right over 100K in the US).

It's not the branding that's the problem. It's over saturated. Too many PPV's, too many brands, too many titles, too much money to spend when the product and big title matches seem more meaningless by the day.

Too many PPVs per year can do that. Remember when PPVs were a big deal? Go on a schedule like UFC, where there always seems to be a PPV on the way, but not two damn weeks apart! Take time to generate interest (if there are more than 2 great storylines going in the whole of the WWE, but that's a gripe for antoher time), and you'll see buyrates double, if not triple.

hmmm.. duhhh.. how do we fix buy rates?..
ohh ! i know, lets raise both prices and over saturate the market, that will get more people to buy our shit.. duhhhh

These are numbers like WCW in their last days (except of course for WMXX5)

I think this shows that you need more than three weeks to build a PPV. Since the WWE is so determined on keeping the brand split and the number of PPV's per year... maybe they should go back to brand split PPVs and give Raw and Smackdown a good 5-6 weeks to build each show.

While the Raw PPVs would suck, at least Smackdown's would be cant-miss.

I have watched wrestling for 35+ years the big problem wwe has is no larger than life star. Hogan, Michaels, Austin, Rock all had a presence in the ring on the mic or simply entering an arena. Now they have Cena try as the might he will never eeevvveeerrrr be in these mens league.

It's all the live streaming sites that NO ONE IS PAYING FOR THE PAY-PER-VIEWS. Which is why they're raising the prices---so they make similar money for less buys.

It's not rocket science. Who wants to pay another $50 for a show(Backlash) only THREE WEEKS after dropping $55 for one(WM)?

They need to cut back on the PPVs. They're more meaningless by the month and while they generate lots of company's revenue, the excessive amount of them is dwindling their meaningfullness.

Too bad about Backlash, it was a fantastic show. I'm surprised Judgment Day did as well as it did.

Several problems"

1. Same matches on every PPV
2. Too many PPV
3. The weekly shows are becoming infomercials for the next ppv. And they begin the monday after the last ppv.
4. Same people being forced down our throats. I just started looking back at wrestling after Wrestlemania and I am fed up with HHH/Legacy.
5. They need to face the fact that they need to rebuild just like sport franchises have too. It is like they think that HHH/Batista/Cena/Orton are the center of the WWE Universe. They need to rebuild and be prepared to take that hit with an eye on the future.

I hate comments like these (from both sides not just pro-WWE guys). Unless TNA rubbed it in the WWEs face then there is NO reason to compare. Unless you are trying to make yourself feel better which wouldn't make much sense since you don't work for the WWE

Thats kind of a BS statement considering that Cena is a far bigger star than Michaels was in his prime (The best thing HBK did was lose the belt to Austin). Apparently Cena sold more merch than The Rock. That leaves Austin and Hogan who were the two biggest stars ever, and quite frankly none of the thousands of wrestlers who have stepped in the ring have surpassed those two in star power, but Cena is by far one of the closest.

The whole buyrate thing is simply a problem because there are two many ppvs, and most of them have the wrestlers matching up agianst each other. When Orton flost to HHH at wrestlemania that should have ended the fued, but WWE probably looked at their schedule and realized that they probably would not be able to build a decent opponent for HHH at the next ppv and Orton at the next ppv because it happens in three weeks. The amount of ppvs lessens the quality, and lets face ityou shoudnt have to shell out $40 every three weeks to watch wrestling.

The WWE in all honesty should only have 6 ppvs a year, have one every two months, and then you have time to build up fueds, and 900,000+ people that ordered mania might actually payfor the rest as well.

It should be:
Wrestlemania-April
Night of Champions-June
Summerslan-August/September
Halloween Havoc- October
Surivor Series-November
Royal Rumble- January

If they did that I could see my self buying all the ppvs in a tear

It really doesn't make sense to me. This is a huge company that has realized success in the past, and yet they're oblivious to the reason on why their buyrates are slipping on an annual basis. OVER SATURATION! No one wants to pay for an Orton/HHH main event 3-4 times a year within 3 weeks apart, it's just not happening.

First of all WWE has never released official listings of merchandice sales. Second do you honestley believe cena is a bigger household name than the rock. Lets see one guys last movie was taken out of theaters early because no one wanted to see it and the other guy's movies regulary open at #1.

No one gives a crap about your opinion on TNA in a WWE post you assholes...

And they should go back to the big 4 ppvs only.
