GLAAD Angry At Vince McMahon Over ‘Gay’ Comment On Raw
Posted by Larry Csonka on 08.26.2009
Uh oh Vince….
- Vince McMahon may have been joking around on Raw, but his comments from Monday night have upset GLAAD. The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation has posted on their blog that they are upset that Vince McMahon "belittled" the Cirque du Soleil performers that appeared on Monday Night Raw by saying that the masks they were wearing were "really gay". You can read the full blog here. Here are some of the highlights…
"McMahon here wasn't implying the performers were gay, however, he used the term in a derogatory manner. It's just another example of how people throw around the word "gay" derisively."
"This came from the leader of a $500 million-plus organization who holds a lot of power in what he says and what he does."
"WWE programming reaches 16 million viewers each week. McMahon needs to understand that the words he uses and how he uses them can greatly affect people's lives."

doesn't gay me happy? he didn't say fag which actually means cigarette or a bundle of wood. he didn't say queer which means odd. I dont get it. maybe if he said fudge packer, butt muncher, or tootsie nibbler. is all homos this combative? go pluck a feather from the peacocks tail.

Oh Noes not GLAAD. If glaad isn't glaad then they will be sad. That completely removes the gays and lesbians alliance, and leaves them only being someone against discrimination. Thus the gay comment shouldn't make them upset since they dont represent them when they are sad.
Posted By: Guest#1288 (Guest) on August 26, 2009 at 08:14 PM
Lol knowing this site's comments it's not gonna be pretty.
Anyway shut up with this oversensitivity and political correctness bullshit. I can't believe there's a group called GLAAD. Free speech lets you say stuff even if it does offend. These same 'victims' also have the right to ignore such remarks if they wish. That is how a democratic society works. Unless they can establish that Vince McMahon made comments intended to provoke some kind of backlash against the gay community, their overanalysis is full of shit.
How about, instead of emphasising one's differences, can we all be seen as HUMAN BEINGS first??!! Black, white, man, woman, straight, gay, old, young...See how all these divisions just create more tensions? The sooner groups like these stop blowing things out of proportion the better. I'm not saying there isn't discrimination in society, but to make an issue out of every little detail. Just stop it already.

I know none of you care--but GLAAD is in the right here. Many people use the word "gay" to mean "stupid" or "dumb." It is really offensive to gay men and women around the country.

The hilarious thing is they sent them the gravy boat on a talk show the day after the Smackdown with the "wedding" was taped. They just embarrassed themselves by not reading the spoilers. But does anyone even take anything GLAAD says seriously? What are they going to do about it? They should stick to inventing garbage bags with draw strings.

Usually i would defend a TV show for something like this, BUT... BUT... they are right.
It's a PG Show and that is the waters Vince chose to swim in. If they want to be a PG show, they have to watch what they say and what they do. If it was PG14 or anything else, different story, but for PG, yeah, that was a mistake.

JDW, I'd agree with you if the gay community made up the word "gay". We all know they didn't as the guy above me pointed out. They co-opted it and frankly I've been using "gay" to say something is stupid for 30 years. Doesn't make me less gay-friendly-words often have multiple meanings.

That being said, GLAAD are the same people who were going to boycott Kevin Smith (if I recall correctly for J&SBSB) unless he made a donation to them... To which Smith made the donation and started mentioning it in every other interview he did while promoting the film.
So F*(&$ GLAAD.

No. They're right. It's not just about free speech and everyone being too sensitive and we're all human beings and what have you. SInce gay people still can't get married wherever they want to in this great country of ours, they have a right to fight for their rights, including defense against defamation of character. Using the constitution as a sword (e.g., free speech irrespective of consequences) is immoral, unethical, and just plain wrong. If we're supposed to be so great, we should be better than that.

You're right, they don't and can give their counter opinion. but the 1st Amendment does give me the right (well it would if I were American) to hear both sides and then refer to GLAAD as a bunch of gay pussies. Which, depending on how you look at it is either a really base comment or a double (or triple) entendre.
What's funny is that the people I know who really really hate GLAAD are all gay.

GLAAD is right. This is a television show that's being marketed for children -- and Vince is a "good guy" to the kids right now. In a way, you could see how some kids might look up to a self-made billionaire and want to emulate his behavior. Even teenagers, for that matter. Using "gay" as a derogatory term can be construed as associative... ergo gay people being "bad".
Is it oversensitive to feel that way? Possibly, but just as Vince's right to free speech is there, so is GLAAD's. Do I like answering my own questions? Yes, yes I do. Have I read the Jeff Jarrett interview where he was practically interviewing himself by asking himself questions and then answering them? Yes, yes I have.
Posted By: luna (Guest) on August 26, 2009 at 11:06 PM
"is the NAACP going to start complaining about JeriShow kicking the shit out of all the black wrestlers in wwe?"
Please don't give them any ideas. Luckily, I'm sure they're busy getting ready to defend that paragon of virtue, Michael Vick, at tomorrows NFL game. In all honesty, I can't wait to read about it. It's really a dream match, PETA vs. NAACP. Let's have the losers disband......and just to make me happy, so do the winners.
I wish GLAAD,the NAACP, PETA and every other overly sensitive group would stop making mountains of molehills at every possible opportunity.
What Vince said was idiotic. If I could be bothered to watch Raw anymore, I would have rolled my eyes for sure. Calling stuff 'gay' is something immature middle schoolers do. Yet some overly sensitive group bitching about it annoys me even more.
I get the feeling that one day soon nobody will be allowed to say anything on TV or radio without first getting approval from the PC police. God forbid some group gets offended. Uh oh, I said God. The horror! Now the Christians will be after me! Or the atheists! Or somebody....both maybe?

Wow, some of the comments in this thread. Just, wow. I know, gay meant happy originally before becoming a word for homosexuals, but still. Words do mean things, and it's known that gay is a word for homosexuals.
When you go around using the word as a form of negativity, as in, "You are so gay" or "That is so gay" you are using it in a form of disapproval and dislike. That quickly becomes hate, and that can lead to bad things.
Now, I know a lot of people in this thread are just trying to be funny and don't realize they are promoting hate, but still. It's not to much of a leap to use such terms in a negative way to actually getting violent and beating or killing somebody.
This is the point GLAAD is trying to make here. Words mean things and they do lead to action. Don't believe it? Just look this up on the net. Lots of beatings and murder in the gay, lesbian and transgendered community.
I myself have been guilty of using the word gay in that way. It wasn't until last year that I have made a conscious effort to change that. I suspect what I have said here won't be popular with many here, but I thought it should be posted for whomever may read in the future.
On a related note, that whole segment, in my opinion, was just bad. Did they really need to spend a half an hour on that? It just wasn't that entertaining and could have been done in half the time.
Just my opinion, for whatever that's worth.

I got to say, Glaad appears to me to me alot like the Naacp in terms of being out of touch with the way things should be. The reason being is they are too sensitive about everything. Maybe its time for change. With that being said, you should know that I'm Mexican American and I have a gay uncle that is pretty cool to hang out with. And I'm not gay. We watch tv and see stuff like what happened on raw and he laughs his ass off. Why? because the shits funny. Thats how things should be and I do they same when i hear Mexican jokes. People need to lighten up and try to enjoy life and be more layed back. It works for me and I'm pretty happy.

As a homo, I don't find McMahon's comments offensive. GLAAD gets really sensitive, really quick over a lot of things, and really has to learn when to chill out. Unfortunately, the WWE has done far far worse - like the APA going to a "gay bar" and it being all drag queens in pearls... or violence against the HLA they called out. This one was okay, and kinda funny.

And you don't suppose the statement was intended to be the slightest bit ironic—the chairman of a multimillion or multibillion-dollar company which produces an entertainment program that many label as "gay" and then appearing on television during said entertainment program and calling some other kind of entertainment gay?
If DX had brought out a magician who asked Vince to pick the red card, and despite what appeared to be a clean, slow swap of the upside-down cards, Vince picked a black one anyways, and said, "I hate these stupid games, they're all rigged," would that have been funny?

Posted By: His Bubbliness (Guest) on August 27, 2009 at 02:17 AM
Sigh.
Some people apparently have a difficult time understanding how "free speech" works because in no way is this a free speech issue.
Free speech can only be stifled by force. Free speech doesn't mean you get to say whatever you want without being called on it. Simply saying you shouldn't say something does not in any way take away your ability to do so.
GLAAD is not advocating making it illegal to use the word "gay" in a derogatory manner, not even on television. They're not infringing anyone's free speech rights. They can't--they don't have the power to do so.
Vince used his free speech rights to say something insulting. GLAAD used its free speech rights to point out how insulted its members were by Vince's words. See, the system works! Hooray for the First Amendment!!!

Hey, you know what's gay?
When you're a guy and you physically force people to kiss your naked backside.
Hey, you know what else is gay?
Your son in law and his male best friend ask young, male wrestlers to perform fellatio on their reproductive organs
Hey, you know what else is gay?
Running a company whereby your favourite employees are all chiselled, semi naked, baby oil covered men.
Yeah, Vince knows what gay is alright, because he's so far back in the closet, he's in fucking Narnia.

I for one would be GLAAD if they took the whole show off the air.

Actually, Vince's comment was 'family-friendly' as homosexual couples cannot reproduce in a natural manner so they opt to adopt children instead or even artificially inseminate themselves. One could say that Mr. McMahon was, in a away, merely stressing that point, albeit in a somewhat harsh manner. In any case, there's no such thing as a 'natural' homosexual family. There are such things as artificial ones and they happen to cover the aforementioned grouping. So how could have McMahon's comment be 'un-family-friendly'? 'un-artificial-family-friendly' maybe, but not 'un-family-friendly'. I hope that makes sense. GLAAD should look at the bigger picture and realise that the mainstream culture which the majority of let us say Americans follow deems homosexuality as a negative characteristic for a person to have and are intolerant of them. Maybe GLAAD should stop over-analysing a single individual and project their message to the thousands of people who misconstrue freedom of speech and freedom of expression, which is what their underlying cause should be in my honest opinion. 'Homosexuals are people too' could be their slogan. I think that their efforts could be put to better use than in attempts to sue for defamation. Do they really think they're going to get a cent out of McMahon? To be frank, I don't even think Vince even understood the connotations of what he said. I'm not defending him, but GLAAD really need to get their priorities in check. I seriously doubt that this kind of attention will do anything to further their just cause. Just for the record, I no longer watch 'WWF[E]', because it's now for 'pansies'. Oops, now I'll get the feminists and anti-sexism groups on my case! Bring back the 'Attitude Era' I say. Stay heterosexual everyone! Ahhh! That feels better! Normality at last!
Peace.

On another point, why do many of you posters insist on assuming that when someone says something is e.g. 'so gay' that they're simultaneously attacking the homosexual community? One word may have several meanings. That's common sense. When you say something is gay, you're being derogatory towards an object or a living thing, it all depends on what the subject is. Obviously if you say that a t-shirt is gay, you're not necessarily insulting gay people. You may just expressing your dislike for the t-shirt. You may, however, be showing some of your preconceived prejudices and embedded stereotypes. The word 'gay' isn't exclusive to homosexuals in this modern age just like 'holocaust' was never and will never be exclusive to Jews.

GLAAD is going to have to trademark the word gay if they actually expect people to feel badly when it's thrown around. Where's the alliance to save words from over-sensitive groups of wrestling viewers?
