Rev. Al Sharpton Issues Statement Explaining Why He Is Hosting WWE Raw
Posted by Larry Csonka on 09.25.2009
Sharpton speaks…
- Newsday's Alfonso Castillo recently contacted Rev. Al Sharpton, in regards to his guest host spot on Raw. His spokeswoman responded with the following comment…
"In order to raise awareness and actually do something about the devastating achievement gap in education between kids of color and their white peers the viewership of WWE events is precisely the group of people who need to be reached and involved. Reverend Sharpton has stated repeatedly that all of us must take extraordinary steps to reverse the current trend in education and that unlikely alliances (like with Newt Gingrich) and forums like the WWE should be utilized if they help close the gap.
Reverend Sharpton has led --and will continue to lead-- the fight against the use of the N-word and bigotry of all types, but until we end disparity in education, such conduct will continue. Rev. Sharpton appeared on BET while fighting against the N-word in their videos and there is no difference.
As Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and John McCain did before him, Reverend Sharpton recognizes that WWE events provide an unfettered opportunity to raise important issues to a national audience of Americans.
Rev. Sharpton has talked to Vince McMahon who assured him that they have corrected and will discontinue any racial denigration."

I don't mean this in a racist way, but the way Sharpton acts, you'd think EVERY SINGLE African American on TV must be portrayed in a positive manner.
He is the kind of person who would scream "RACISM" just because a black wrestler is a heel...
that said, there is the obvious history of racism in the business, so don't think I'm counting that out. But there is a HUGE gulf between the two viewpoints.

That's my issue with the man too. Under the guise of fighting racism, He just hates everyone but his fellow Blacks.
Posted By: Freakzilla (Guest) on September 25, 2009 at 01:58 PM
I'm curious to wonder how WWE will handle this, post-Sharpton. A number of their black wrestlers are, in one way or another, a stereotype:
-Cryme Time being the biggest example.
-Shelton Benjamin's "Gold Standard" shtick. Does he still do that?
-The...Jamaican guy, whose name I'm blanking on right now (been one of those days).
Then again, wrestling and racial stereotypes of ALL races has been a consistent staple in its history.

I won't watch. The only good thing that could come out of this is if we find out that Cryme Tyme secretly have doctorates in business and management. All other roads lead to blind blanket statements that whitey is racist.
Posted By: WWE FAIL (Guest) on September 25, 2009 at 02:12 PM
This coming from a man who said,
""It is true that Mr. Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, after which there was a commitment to give 40 acres and a mule. That's where the argument, to this day, of reparations starts. We never got the 40 acres... We went all the way to Herbert Hoover, and we never got the 40 acres. We didn't get the mule. So we decided we'd ride this donkey as far as it would take us." -speaking at the Democratic Convention
He is part of the problem in America and if anyone thinks he will make this show entertaining.....wow

The Reverends Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, while visiting a primary school class, found themselves in the middle of a discussion related to words and their meanings. The teacher asked both men if they would like to lead the discussion of the word tragedy. So the illustrious Reverend Jackson asks the class for an example of a tragedy.
One little boy stood up and offered, "If my best friend, who lives on a farm, is playing in the field and a runaway tractor comes along and knocks him dead, that would be a tragedy."
"No," says the Great Jesse Jackson, "that would be an accident."
A little girl raised her hand. "If a school bus carrying 50 children drove over a cliff, killing everyone inside, that would be a tragedy."
"I'm afraid not," explains the exalted Reverend Al. "That's what we would call a great loss." The room goes silent. No other children volunteer.
Reverend Al searches the room. "Isn't there someone here who can give me an example of a tragedy?"
Finally at the back of the room little Johnny raises his hand. In a stern voice he says, "If a plane carrying the Reverends Jackson and Sharpton were struck by a missile and blown to smithereens that would be a tragedy."
"Fantastic!" exclaims Jackson and Sharpton, "That's right. And can you tell me why that would be a tragedy?"
"Well," says little Johnny, "because it sure wouldn't be a great loss and it probably wouldn't be an accident.

Posted By: Alcoholic (Guest) on September 25, 2009 at 02:19 PM
Here's the real story...
Sharpton contacted Vince McMahon and threatened to start a WWE boycot based on allegations of racism unless Vince paid him off.
It's been the Sharpton method for DECADES. The man is a worthless race-baiting scumbag, and to many a walking justification of their racist feelings.
Posted By: Scott B (Guest) on September 25, 2009 at 02:22 PM
This is going to be a train-wreck, I might have to record this.

Wonder how he is going to to act out the promos. What a waist of tv time. Well i guess ill be playing the xbox on monday, instead of watching his dumbass. He needs to find a job and stick with it, instead of being a racist jackass like his brother jessie jackson. They are always there to defend a brother, but wont defend a white man that got his ass whooped by a black man, but if the role was reversed you know they be all over that.
Posted By: tofunny (Guest) on September 25, 2009 at 02:42 PM
So what, Cryme Tyme are bad stereotypes, but for example Vladimir Kozlov is good, right? Or that Irish guy or the Japanese one?
Posted By: Guest#4654 (Guest) on September 25, 2009 at 02:48 PM
Couldn't they have played it safe and just called Oprah to host RAW? She's a billionaire because she appeals to women of all demographics (and there was a recent report about how WWE is pulling in more female viewers).
Posted By: Guest#2149 (Guest) on September 25, 2009 at 02:49 PM
i pray vince gets a clue and stops with these crappy guest managers. He is bringing in people that don't even care about the business just for ratings. Al is a racist and it's sad that vince would give him a platform. well i guess MVP and Henry will win the belts. Shelton Benjamin will show up to fight Orton, and DX will fight Cryme Time... gotta let them win some matches because of what we did to their grandfathers!
Posted By: the bas (Guest) on September 25, 2009 at 03:04 PM
Aren't stereotypes ususally based on some truth? And I'm still not watching.

I thought raw was traditionally white show and smackdown was the minority playground.
Posted By: Showster (Guest) on September 25, 2009 at 03:15 PM
People like this piece of hate mongering filth are the reason racism and bigotry are still rife.
Why, in this day and age are we bringing the colour of peoples skin up? Aren't we all one race - that of the human race.
Normal people, of which there are a lot of us, don't give a flying fuck what colour someones skin is and don't have to mention it every time we mention anything.
There's plenty of uneducated, unemployed people of every race. It's not a black thing.
Whilst the majority of normal people have moved on and just get on with living in one big happy cosmopolitan melting pot, extremists like Al Sharpton try and drag us down to the dark ages every time.
He shouldn't be given air time of any sort. If it's a matter of freedom of speech and controversy creating interest, will The Westboro Baptist church be given a platform to preach from as guest host of RAW? I highly doubt it.
Al Sharpton and hate peddlars of his ilk should be ignored by any sane people.

Posted By: Karen Angle's "Other" Man (Guest) on September 25, 2009 at 03:18 PM
Now, this would have been awesome a few years ago if the WWE still had King Booker. I could imagine the interactions b/w those two. As it is, there really isn't one really interesting African-American character (or wrestler) in the WWE right now.
MVP used to be, but as they often do when turning wrestlers face, he has become so generic.
Kofi: Generic Jamacian
Mark Henry: The only time he was interesting was in the late 90's and early 2000's, and that was interesting in the Russo car-crash way
Cryme Time: Generic gangsta thugs.

Do "guest hosts" get paid for their appearances on raw?? Then I better hear how sharpton donated his salary to the "cause" he is going to shove down peolpe's throats on monday. if not he's what I've always thought he was, a self-promoting jackass

And more

ok, so this means...
- Mark Henry beats Orton in the main event.
- MVP can wrestle with his shirt off and show his Malcom X tattoo.
- Kofi reveals his family is from Ghana, not Jamaica.
- R-Truth gets payback on Drew McIntyre
- Cryme Tyme gets repackaged and starts wearing tights.
- Alicia Fox beats Mickie James for the title.
- Shelton gets another failed push.

This is too funny. There have been THOUSANDS of positive white wrestlers for YEARS, for the few "bad" stereotypes like Kozlov. You can count the number of black wrestlers with "good" stereotypes on one hand. For every Rocky Johnson, there are five Jund Yard Dogs, Kamalas, Cryme Tymes, King Bookers, Slicks, Abdullah the Butchers, etc, etc, etc...

I agree with each and every one of you guys on this topic. From the sounds of it, this Rev. Sharpton guy incites the racism arguments while if he'd only keep his yap shut there wouldnt be any problems at all. lol Just thought of something. Wonder how Old Al would feel if Teddy Long came out with his Holla Holla Holla at ya Playa schtick.

You are kidding right? Vince will just dress some wigga up as Rev. Fuck all this.
Posted By: Rev shut the fuck up (Guest) on September 25, 2009 at 04:56 PM
"The fight against the use of the N-word"? Is that a joke? Apart from the obvious lack of context regarding "The N-word", to include such a statement whilst referring to black kids as "kids of color" seems mildly stupid.
Posted By: Frank (Guest) on September 25, 2009 at 05:13 PM
This is where I personally draw the line on this guest host crap. I will not be watching RAW this Monday. It wont be about wrestling, it will be about racism. Im not a fan of him, but I really hope Jericho smacks the living crap out of him. C'mon, Vince. Seriously? Al Sharpton?
Posted By: Steve (Guest) on September 25, 2009 at 05:20 PM

Sounds like everyone here is blaming Al Sharpton for single-handedly keeping racism alive in 2009.
I'm gonna need you to get outside more often. I guess for some of you, it's just so outside of the realm of possibility that racism is still around.
For the record, I'm not watching Raw either, but that had more to do with Stephanie McMahon than Al Sharpton.

I love how all of you clowns complain about Sharpton and other guest hosts, you rant about how Vince is ruining the product, you scream racism and corny and other junk . . . .
Then you turn on RAW, and whether you sit and watch it, walk around and rant about it or use it as background noise in the room . . . .
you tell Nielsen and the WWE that you approve of this path.
You want real change? Stop watching the show. Just like in the early nineties, Vince will get it.
By the way, isn't this pc, no blood, guest host shtick the result of a Linda McMahon (cough, conservative, cough) senate run requiring a cleaner WWE?
