Ring Of Honor Wins An Unusual Award
Posted by Larry Csonka on 10.22.2009

According to Pwinsider.com, Ring of Honor was given a special award in The Village Voice's Best of NYC issue. The award? Best Place to Watch Straight Men Get All Homoerotic. Read on for the caption from The Voice

"The legions of black-T-shirt-, black-jeans-clad wrestling fans in this world might take offense to what we're about to say, but here goes: Wrestling is gay. That's not an epithet (like we'd ever . . . ). It just is, literally, gay. When a man in ball-outlining shiny undies wraps his crotch around another man's head, flexes his muscles, and grunts, the activity has more to do with porn than sports. It's hard to believe how straight the audience can be, but there you have it. World Wrestling Entertainment is that giant conglomerate you probably caught on TV at one time or another, but for even better theatrics in a more up-close-and-personal setting, try to scout out one of Ring of Honor's New York dates. Usually playing the intimate Manhattan Center, this indie league hosts a variety of highly toned men basically taking part in stage combat—or auditioning for a Michael Lucas film, we're not sure. If the gay community ever catches wind, wrestling is going to be as popular with the homos as the WNBA. "

Wow, "wrestling is gay." Never heard that one before. I'm actually a little concerned anyone thought that was actually an original enough thought for it to be worth printing in The Village Voice.

That's the best someone could come up with? "Wrestling is gay"? It's really not even that funny. It's just kind of sad.

you've gotta be fucking kidding me

The Voice can go fuck themselves! Not since Phil Mushnik have I felt so insulted as a wrestling fan.

Posted By: Miller (Guest)  on October 22, 2009 at 12:31 PM

Wow. I'm sure the WWE fanboys will run wild with this, but it's just as much a condemnation of their product (and TNA's) as ROH.

Actually, what they're saying is "all wrestling is gay, but this ROH stuff isn't bad." But you watch, there will be a thousand "hardy har har" comments from the dipshits.

Austin Aries fault.

Wow. I'm gay and watch wrestling because, you know, I like wrestling. If I want to watch porn I'll try that whole internet thing out instead of watching ROH.

It's not like you can really dispute the massive homoeroticism of wrestling.

Wrestling is gay. This is an article written for gay men, explaining what they might find attractive about sweating men pretending to fight.

It's not supposed to be funny. Although all the homophobia here is.

Tell this to someone like Jay Briscoe or Roddy Strong........and then sit back while they beat your eyes shut

I completely agree that Wrestling is gay.

Wanna do something even more gay?

Go to a metal concert: Thousands of long haired hairy men in tight black outfits raising their fists into the air as a union and bumping into each other. Now tell me that isn't gay. That is even gayer than wrestling.

The reaction of some the comments of this story are very amusing. So many of yall condeming what The Village wrote, because deep down you cannot admit to yourselves the truth about pro rasslin that it is a cheap, tacky sideshow which the rest of America stopped caring about years ago.

And I really do not wish to debate the so-called 'workrate' of Ring of Honor. Yeah some of is alright but it is essentially the same concept as any other bigger wrestling league. Why else does FOX News and such look down at it?

Wow. Way to offend wrestling fans AND homosexuals.

"It just is, literally, gay."

And you LITERALLY don't know the meaning of the word "literally."

"If the gay community ever catches wind, wrestling is going to be as popular with the homos as the WNBA."

Good. The crowd in the Manhattan Center really could use some fashion tips.

Instead of a Green Lantern Fan, though, they'd have to have an Aquaman fan or maybe Robin.

This is why as gay man I don't associate with any lgbt groups really, or support crap like the village. way to fucking pigeon hole us. yeah theirs a few wrestlers I think are hot, but ive never fucked jacked off to a show, i watch wrestling ebcasue i like the sport/story, same as straight fans.

fucking christ.

also, this?: If the gay community ever catches wind, wrestling is going to be as popular with the homos as the WNBA. " :

PULEASE. basketball is fucking boring regardless of what kind of bitch is throwing the ball around.

Probably has more to do with the fans of ROH than the actual wrestlers...as gay as the night is long those people.

I like MMA and pro wrestling, and I have to admit, MMA has a lot more groin rubbing and 69ing positioning than pro wrestling, where the average match has it for a few seconds.

Now you understand why all the ROHBOTS are so passionate about Rob Feinsteins baby.

"Best Place to Watch Straight Men Get All Homoerotic"

LOL at 'straight men'

I don't see the problem. Wrestling is a form of entertainment that people find entertaining for different reasons.

Well have you seen some of Aries' choice in tights lately?

I think the joke here is not "WRESTLING IS GAY HAR HAR HAR" -- rather, the joke is that The Village Voice actually decided to give out an award for "Best Place to Watch Straight Men Get All Homoerotic."

From that perspective, it's kinda funny.

I'm sorry, but the article is 100% correct about pro wrestling. Its pretty gay. Deny it if you want to, but its true.

The only thing shocking about the article is that people still apparently watch ROH.

ROH is more low rent and embarrassing than gay.

Posted By: wwefan (Guest)  on October 22, 2009 at 03:11 PM

As a high school wrestler, I heard that a lot too.
Ew, I can't believe you roll around with other guys in spandex.
Look, if you're completely comfortable in your heterosexual masculinity, you can wrestle without (gasp!) ever being aroused. EVER.
I always thought people who are uncomfortable with it are probably in denial that they swing that way.
Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Wrestling is gay? This just in... the Earth is round. The only thing gayer than wrestling is a bunch of goons on a wrestling website trying to defend that it isn't gay.

People like you really do have a one-track mind, treating WWE fans as if they can't also like ROH. For the record, I like WWE AND ROH. I find the article to be a complete crock of shit and the author needs to be curb-stomped, as do you for your pithy comment.

"lol the IWC's heads just exploded. Amazing."

Ha yeah to whoever The Village is, I commend you on a successful trolling attempt. I wonder how soon until a bunch of rednecks catch wind of this and post rage-filled "shoots" on YouTube.

You know, I really want to disagree with this, but I just watched a Rhett Titus match where he humped Jerry Lynn's face. The thrust is a must AND it's really, REALLY gay...

"People like you really do have a one-track mind, treating WWE fans as if they can't also like ROH."

I'm basing that 100% on personal experience. You click on any random link on this website, and you'll see WWE fans vs. TNA fans vs. everyone else. I'm not saying I like it, or even that I participate, as I'm just like you: I watch several different companies. I'm just saying that's how it is. Hence:

"The only thing shocking about the article is that people still apparently watch ROH.

ROH is more low rent and embarrassing than gay.

Posted By: wwefan (Guest)"

Still want to curb stomp me there, Billy Bad Ass? Or are you going to continue to be willfully obtuse for the sake of your shitty "threat"?

"

..I don't have a problem with this.

Are the wrestlers kissing each other? Are they gazing deep into their opponent's eyes lovingly while moistening their lips with their tongues? Are they engaging in sodomy? Are they declaring their love for one another while holding hands and asking for equal rights? No? Then it's not gay. There's grappling for the sake of an athletic performance and then there's groping and rubbing intended to get a message across.

"It just is, literally, gay."

that last comment was a mistake =/

anyway continuing...

Oh, thats right! bcuz in every match ur required to pull ur tights down and start buttfucking each other in the center of the ring so the crowd could whack it as hard as they can.

right? right? o wait...

That's weird cause I do all my gay jerking at the octagon.

Posted By: Guest#8742 (Guest)  on October 22, 2009 at 07:30 PM

I'm reminded of that Ron White bit about proving that his friend is at least a little gay.

And I'm sorry, but pretending that it isn't at least tangentially homoerotic makes you sound ignorant.

And on the MMA, the reason its less gay is because they are actually inflicting violence instead of just pretending to. The aspects of role-playing and domination involved in pro wrestling aren't necessarily gay, it just comes across that way sometimes cause its two dudes.

Anyone who watches a women's match and thinks thats hot, really has to admit that two dudes doing it could be a little, you know.

The odd thing is I'm gay and have been a wrestling fan for years but I've never found it to be remotely arousing, though I do have a crush on Paul London

Posted By: Bloodied (Guest)  on October 23, 2009 at 12:49 AM

If wrestlers don't want to seem gay, they should stop wrestling in their undies! Who wants to see 40 year old's asses? There's no reason to wear them, it's not a real sport, it's just an excuse for faggotry.

Posted By: Guest#6652 (Guest)  on October 23, 2009 at 02:04 AM

Okay...and why does this article matter to 411mania's Wrestling section? I'd really like to start there instead of even beginning to comtemplate such a unoriginal opinion. Has nothing to do with wrestling updates.

When some newspaper calls ROH gay, it's blasphemy.

When Todd Grisham gets called gay, it's funny.

Huh?

Posted By: Vince (Guest)  on October 23, 2009 at 10:13 AM

The Bronco Buster, the Stink Face, Vince's Kiss my Ass Club, almost all of Billy Gun's ring outfits....I think some of the posters are deep in denial here.

Chill out folks, at least they picked on Ring of Honor - it could have been a lot worse.

Anyway RoH could do with some more fans and some of the people I've seen at Ring of Honor shows really need some help from the Queer Eye for a Straight Guy folks so prehaps it will turn out for the better.

Best comments thread ever though!
