Jim Cornette’s latest Q&A…
- Jim Cornette has posted a new Q&A, here are the highlights…
On Hogan and Bischoff To TNA: Oh, this whole thing reminds me of why I hate corporate wrestling. I must admit there are bright spots, like imagining Vince McMahon's face and blood pressure when he heard the news, or hearing Hogan bitchslap Vince Russo by saying they'd be OK if "he stays in his place." Can TNA make their minds up, LAST month everybody had to be "100% behind Russo's creative direction" and THIS month they hire a guy who once SUED him for his lousy booking? They have reunited the same team that helped WCW lose more money than any wrestling promotion in history.
On ROH: In the old territory days, when business was drastically down, even in danger of folding up, you would "hotshot" the territory. You would give them as much blood, violence, heat, angles and edgy content as you could get away with, until the fans either came back or the territory closed down. If they came back, the art was to pull the hotshotting back soon enough and get them hooked on the wrestling again, before it got to where you "couldn't follow it", and you closed up anyway. The base of it all was still two guys are gonna fight, who's gonna win? With the corporate world involved, the ratings wars, WWF vs. WCW, WWE vs. TNA, etc., wrestling has been hotshotted for 15 years straight, and it's finally gotten to where we can't follow it. So many angles and so many bumps, with special effects and outrageous stunts and preposterous stories and hardcore matches with buckets of blood.
On MMA: The rise of UFC in particular and MMA in general has shown that people have a desire to strip away the hokey bullshit and get back down to the base of it--two guys are gonna fight, who's gonna win? Whether it's "real" or not is about number 5 on the list of reasons the UFC is kicking wrestling's ass. People want to see two guys, charismatic, colorful, and athletic, engage in an exciting contest with flashy moves or hard strikes ending with one guy winning, sometimes in a controversial fashion and often necessitating a rematch. That describes both MMA and pro wrestling. They will pay to see that when properly promoted. They will watch sports entertainment on TV for free, but it's getting harder and harder to get people to get attached enough to "sports entertainment", presented outright as scripted entertainment and generally comedic in nature, to buy it on PPV or at the arenas.
On The WWE Hall Of Fame: Not much and no. Obviously, they have not been beating my door down nor do I expect them to, but here's my feelings. It started as a WWF Hall of Fame just so they could have a dinner before Wrestlemania. Vince picked who he wanted to put in it, and only WWF stars or personnel made it, so you got James Dudley (Vince Sr.'s limo driver). Bruno Sammartino is still not in. Then, when Vince bought WCW, they changed it to a Hall of Fame for ALL wrestling, and Vince still picks who he wants in. If he's doing a big video release on you, or you were over in the city WM appears in, you're in. There's a quota of not too many dead people per year so it's not a downer. If he's mad at you, you're not in. If he doesn't know who you are, you're not in. Lou Thesz is not in. So seriously, even though there have been some genuinely great moments at the dinner, that was due to the talent themselves and not the prestige of Vince's HOF. There are certainly people in there that would be in any HOF, and some that wouldn't. Overall, I am prouder of both myself and both versions of the Midnight Express being in the Wrestling Observer Hall of Fame, because in that one, you are actually VOTED in by people in and around the sport.

I hope wrestling does get back to the matches as the main focus of the product, as he observed.
Maybe I'm a mark but I still see the WWE hall of fame as prestigious. The alumni are amazing and I wouldn't rule Thesz out

leave it to jim cornette to tell it how it is.
the greatest mind in pro wrestling period.

Cornette is just full of awesome insight. Straight up, honest and blunt as always.
Thanks Larry.

He's unemployed because he tells it like it is. That's a good thing. Not a lot of honesty in pro wrestling. People just believe what is spoon-fed to them by the ones in power. Bravo to Cornette. Fuck Vince and his cronies!

I thought he was with ROH.
That said, he shares a common fault with Paul Heyman in being unable to work with the people in charge. In fact, it would be kind of fun to watch Cornette and Heyman running the same fed, just for the behind the scenes stuff.

Is it just me or did he not even mention ROH in the ROH section? There you go ROH haters, that's live bait there and i realized it as soon as i typed it.

I like coronette as much as the next guy but there is a reason why the guy can't keep a job. You can spin it anyway you want but he can't stay employed in te business despite him supposedly being the best.
So he either caters tot he worng type of fan or is out of touch with what makes money. Sort of like a film that is critcally accalimed and wins awards or one that actually makes moeny and people go and see.
But then again I guess he is sort of employed in some capacity by RoH. So that might count I suppose.

If he's such a great mind, how come he couldn't remember that the team of Hogan and Bischoff, which 'lost WCW the most money any promotion has ever lost', also made WCW more money than they could ever have dreamed of?

I wish wrestling people would realize that MMA has a different fanbase

Within a year, one would be dead, the other in jail and the company would be broke.

He may be honest, he may be a great talker, but he's a moron when it comes to wrestling.

I think that is because he's forced to work with people that didn't come up in wrestling, and the only thing they're good at is kissing the ass of the man in charge. While it makes for job security, it doesn't always put out the best product.

you're all jumpin the man's dick when all he's doing is living in the past & dressing up insults with fancy words... preah it, JC, the sheep are eating your pooh!

lol ROH aint never gonna be big cuz they dont wanna spend money on stars and production.
They coulda skooped Kennedy and RVD andf they would have fit in with the product..
But they are extra cheap.
They're too indy and pure wrestling to ever be a mainstream promotion.
I think TNA is wise to raid their lockeroom and put them outta businesses.Take their 2,000 fans..

Im pretty sure they were both on the WCW booking commitee together at one point.
Cornette thinks Heyman was a horrible businessman for paying for his TV time and doing ppv before doing TV.
Heymen never drew a dime..He took an already hot indy in a traditional wrestling hotbed and just added elements on FCW and Jerry Springer type elements..

Isn't this the EXACT same thing I said on one of Hubbard's columns a few months back? And about half a dozen people jumped down my throat with "No dude, it's about telling stories! They're trying to be fucking SHAKESPEARE out there!"
Well, there ya go. Maybe some of you can keep your little third-rate, trailer park soap operas and consider it some kind of intellectual exercise (don't strain yourself though, this stuff is, in fact, rocket science). I want THE BIG FIGHT. Whether it's worked or "real," I don't really care. And I am not alone.

Yowza, Cornette doesn't bs or play games.
The fact that TNa let this guy go and not onky kept Russo but hired Hogan as well boggles the mind. Sure is an odd company.
And it's also good to see someone in wrestling give MA the props it desrves. Too often, it's an "us vs. hem" mentality between the two camps. As a fan of the two, I see a lot of similarities between the two (hence why the UFC is stealing away disaffected wrestling fans). It all boils down to the common denominator of violence, people.

Real MP: I'm right there with ya. And so are millions of others, looking anywhere we have to the find a world outside of midgets, montages and model-wannabes.
