Ring of Honor To Introduce World Television Championship
Posted by Larry Csonka on 01.20.2010

From ROHWrestling.com:

- ROH made the following announcement today…
Ring of Honor To Introduce World Television Championship

BRISTOL, Pennsylvania (January 20, 2010)
– Ring of Honor Wrestling is proud to announce the addition of a new secondary singles title – The ROH World Television Championship – into active competition. Beginning February 5, 2010 as part of the next HDNet National Television tapings in Philadelphia, Ring of Honor will host an 8-Man Championship Tournament to crown the inaugural champion.

"We've been talking about adding a secondary championship for some time," said ROH President Cary Silkin. "Not only will this give the athletes of Ring of Honor another tremendous goal to work towards, it will also give our great partner, HDNet, a championship that is sure to be defended on the television program. We're happy to publicly give thanks to HDNet for giving us the chance to add this title to the television show, and to All Star Championship Belts for bringing the actual belt to life."

The ROH World Television Title Tournament will play out over the course of the six episodes of "Ring of Honor Wrestling" that are set to be filmed over the February 5/6 weekend at the Arena in South Philadelphia. The tournament brackets and seeding will be unveiled over the course of the coming days via release at ROHWrestling.com.

ROH Vice President Sydney Eick added, "It's an exciting time to be sure; the Television title will bring an added level of competition and intrigue to the show, and we're all looking forward to it."

Ring of Honor Wrestling airs Monday at 8pm EST on HDNet. For more information on the program please visit www.rohwrestling.com and www.hd.net/ringofhonor. For more information on All Star Championship Belts, please visit http://allstarchampionshipbelts.webs.com.

It's about fucking time

I have to say.. I think this is great news. And if they use the old standard NWA/WCW time-limit rule... the possibilities are wonderful. I know the 60 minute match between aries/black was kind of crapped on.. but a 15 minute time-limit rule always seemed to make sense. Also it adds some meaning to the TV programming.

A TV Title in ROH...Oh no they didn't!

Yeah, an ROH TV Title. THAT will put ROH to the top of the food chain ... NOT.

Forget Hogan to TNA
Forget the upcoming Royal Rumble
forget EVERYTHING!

ROH adding a TV Title. That's news. Especially from a company that is not even on TV, but I digress.

ROH, the red headed step child in the wreslting world.

A TV Title. That is so WCW.

I don't know about this.

ROH is on TV, you idiot. At least try to get informed before trying to be all witty and failing badly.

Where did I read that ROH is treating this like the second coming of Christ?

I'm not the biggest ROH fan, but this is great news. It will give the undercard something to fight for instead of just having random matches. I could see Kenny King having an RVD type run with the belt, but I think he may be at the top of the list to get scooped up by TNA or WWE.

They're about 6 years too late.

Good, fun news. Nice, ROH.

Yep..THAT'LL put butts in the seats!

Betcha that'll make the 44 ROH fans happy won't it? You remember...the Young Bucks left for better TV exposure on TNA....so they lost 2 fanboys.

Sorry bout your damn luck ROHbots!

"ROH Vice President Sydney Eick"

You're kidding me right? Somebody has the job title of ROH Vice President? No disrespect to this guy but being ROH vice president is about as meaningless as being the V.P. of the XFL.

elvylanda must be the stupidest commenter ever. Hey troll, the company is on TV.

-Bunkhouse Buck-

I've seen Kenny King. Nothing special. Looks pretty bland and not anything off the charts in terms of wrestling. I would not waste time picking him up.

American Wovles, on the other hand, I am on this team's bandwagon. WWE or TNA, PLEASE pick these guys up!

Right move, wrong promotion.

TNA should make the Global title a TV title that is used for the midcard and would give you a decent Main Event every week to keep them from giving away PPV matches on free tv.

Posted By: Guest#4696 (Guest)  on January 20, 2010 at 11:09 AM

ROH had a secondary title...the Pure Title....which was interesting and different based on the rules conducted for the belt. For a company that prides itself on its in ring ability..why not just bring the damn Pure title back?

Posted By: Johnny Israel (Guest)  on January 20, 2010 at 11:19 AM

Bring back the PURE title!

Posted By: Guest#2603 (Guest)  on January 20, 2010 at 11:20 AM

It IS great news, and the upcoming tournament to crown the first champ should make for GREAT TV. I'm all for this.

Question: who do you think should be the first champ? I'm thinking one of the Kennys, preferably King since Omega is pretty heavily into the World title hunt now. King was just born to be on TV and being the first champ would really elevate his standing.

Finally, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE ignore the troll. Thank you.

Glad to see this, as somebody trying to give ROH a chance it'd be nice to add a reason to watch the midcard guys who i've never heard of. It'd also help people like myself to see who actually means something in the midcard.

TNA should have introduced this rather than the non-existant Global championship

Newsflash: Their whole SHOW is a random match. This will make about as much sense as putting the TV title on Grizzly Redwood.

By the time ROH's roster is gutted by TNA and WWE....that's about all that'll be left.

Sounds like fun to me.

Posted By: JMAC (Guest)  on January 20, 2010 at 11:42 AM

That's an excellent idea. Now that they have weekly TV they can consistently have title matches on TV without it having to be their two major titles.

Posted By: DocSarpolis (Guest)  on January 20, 2010 at 11:50 AM

Are you people kidding me? Clearly you people don't know anything about the TV title.

A secondary title is JUST what ROH needs. Loads of guys in ROH aren't going to be the world champ, but the lower-tier guys really do need something to fight for too. Imagine a Lord Steven Regal type heel who constantly takes guys to the 15-minute time limit. Its a great opportunity to get some people over the old school way.

I have crapped on ROH more than anybody over the years, but this is an excellent decision.

Enough of this chick already!!

She doesn't even know ANYTHING about the wrestling business!!!

All she does is troll around the 411 comment section and talk smack on every wrestling promotion that isn't TNA!

If she actually knew some info about wrestling she would know that ROH is indeed on TELEVISION!!

Also, I don't remember reading anywhere that ROH is introducing a TV Title as a way to compete with WWE or TNA?!??!

Stop posting this stupid trolls' comments as she adds NOTHING to ANY conversation!!

She is just some 14 year old girl who has no life and spends her days posting in the 411 comment section when she should be in school learning something or getting felt up by her teachers.

A secondary title that makes sense. Cool.

"They're about 6 years too late."

You know that the point of a TELEVISION TITLE is that it's defended on TELEVISION right?

Posted By: Guest#9998 (Guest)  on January 20, 2010 at 12:15 PM

It's about time! And to everyone saying that will put butts in the seats, unlike TNA and WWE (who think every little thing they do will draw SUPER RATINGS), ROH cares about elevating all of their stars and giving the fans what they want. A TV title will give the midcard guys something to achieve that could possibly elevate them (remember when the US and IC titles meant that you were ready for World Title contendership?).

Except for Tyler Black winning the belt. That ship kinda sailed a while ago.

How is this anything but good news?

Take note the negative nancy's names, because these are your commenters who just want to get themselves over with the internet wrestling crowd by 'standing out'.

"Sorry bout your damn luck ROHbots!"

No need to be sorry, I think most of us "ROHbots" (very clever, and original) are pretty ecstatic about this decision.

Ohhhh I get it, you're letting some other guy's catchphrase speak for you. You ripped a catchphrase from a chintzy, low-rent pretend-beer drinker, who ripped it from a chintzy, low-rent country singer. That's cute.

Yes, but if ROH is on TV on a channel almost nobody gets, does it really matter?

Seriously. these guys need a network upgrade. They need to find their way to Versus or some place people can see it.

A TV Championship is not a bad idea though.

You know whats interesting. you get these people who get on here and leave lame comments bashing roh. Like why in the blue hell is the point of even commenting or even reading the article if you dont even like roh. Bottom line roh is the closest thing to professional wrestling. WWE is the leader and will always be the leader in sports entertainment... so nice try TNA you will NEVER beat the WWE. Definitley when you are bringing back guys like the nasty boys who i havent cared about since they beat the hart foundation at wrestlemania VII. Or having a guys that main evented your payperviews the last two months and have them lose to a former wwe midcarder whos last important match was at summerslam 98! So really some of you guys really need to stop bashing roh . cause they have logical storylines for the most part.. wrestlers that can actually wrestle and guys who cut promos without a damn writing team...And o ya they actually respect their world title instead of shooting it from one person to another every two months! Just because they dont have two hours on tv doesnt say they are dog shit. ROH gets more done in a hour than tna usually gets in a whole taping. And lastly whoever posted that ROH draws like 40 fans... They have no clue. they consistently draw like 800 on their shows and hey it may not sound like much but you know what thats what TNA DRAWS on their house shows and they are on a huge network and has way more money than ROH! so that pretty much shows what fans really think of tna. so stay within your nice little confines of the sound stage...errrrrrrrr IMPACT zone and remain characters...errrrrr fans! ( o ya those fans are turning on tna.)

Awesome. This is great for guys like Kenny King, Eric Stevens, Joey Ryan, Kevin Steen, and others. Now if only PWG would introduce a secondary title....

you would figure these comment sections would be moderated properly by now so that some of the trolls stuff could be deleted or better still, not put up in the first place.

I like the idea, mainly because my company, All Star Championship Belts, was picked to make the dang belt! But also because it helps to showcase the best talent that ROH has on a weekly basis without devaluing the world title by over-exposing it. It's a throwback idea, but properly handled it can be a good thing for ROH fans and any wrestling fans who want something different than midgets and strippers every week.
