WWE Makes CNN's Worst Corporate Name Changes List
Posted by Mitch Michaels on 02.08.2010

- Thanks to the recent rebranding of Comcast to Xfinity, CNN has made a list of the Worst Corporate Name Changes. WWE made the list for their switch from WWF. Here's what CNN said:

"In a 2000 legal smackdown between the World Wrestling Federation and the World Wildlife Fund over the use of WWF, the wrestlers got pinned. A British court found in 2001 that the wrestling group had violated a 1994 agreement limiting the use of the initials, which the two companies had shared since 1979. The following year, the company changed its name to World Wrestling Entertainment Inc., or WWE. "Our new name puts the emphasis on the E for entertainment, what our company does best," said CEO Linda McMahon in a press release at the time. The comment didn't do much to stamp out persistent rumors that the fights are rigged — but hey, at least she was honest. "

Spike TV also made the list for switching their name from The National Network (TNN) in 2003.

Seems like this list comes out any time a corporation changes its name.

Forget the E in WWE, why is their logo 2 W's? Why couldn't they add another line in the F and keep the same scratch logo as WWF?

It's not like Vince did it for the hell of it. He was forced to change the initials.

Spike TV was an excellent rebranding because now it's a men's channel instead of pandering, as everyone who lives east of the Mississippi is an idiot.

Rumors? I thought wrestling being rigged was a fact. That's like saying I heard a rumor that the sky is blue.

I thought about this too when it happened. Of course, the name change represents the shift from wrestling being entertaining and fun to watch when it was the WWF. To being boring and repetitive once it became the WWE.

Spike TV was worse than The Nashville Network? (TNN)I am not sure why that says it was the National Network. Maybe thats what it was originally but for the 5 - 10 years before Spike it was The Nashville Network and was all bullriding and other hillbilly shows.

CNN currently holds the worst name. When have you seen News on CNN?

Posted By: Guest#7808 (Guest)  on February 08, 2010 at 04:11 PM

Wow, that's exactly the same bullshit they merrily trotted out last year, word by word. And back then it was some 25 years outdated. What, did some idiot write it in the 70s? Or some genius came up with this in the XXI century?

Posted By: JK (Guest)  on February 08, 2010 at 04:13 PM

Good old CNN...always on the ball with WWE. Like the time they out-and-out lied and changed John Cenas interview response to make it seem like he confessed to using steroids.

""the fights are rigged."

Yeah, so is their news. Both for our entertainment.

This should be one of their facts during the "Did you know:" section of RAW.

Posted By: Leon (Guest)  on February 08, 2010 at 05:48 PM

The comment didn't do much to stamp out persistent rumors that the fights are rigged

...seriously??? This is whats wrong with the media...wrestling fans "get" that wrestling is predetermined... "News" outlets still arent in on the joke and thus look retarded when they cant figure it out

Posted By: Guest#5077 (Guest)  on February 08, 2010 at 05:58 PM

Why even report on what CNN reports? It's gutter press journalism at its worst.

Posted By: Cun\' (Guest)  on February 08, 2010 at 05:59 PM

In the long run changing the name to WWE has been beneficial as the 'Entertainment' part of the name has given a more direct answer to exactly what the company is... plus in the PG era saying entertainment sounds more friendly than Federation.

Logo wise the WW I think looks a lot better than with the F. It's more modern and streamlined.

Obviously corporate bullshit aside WWF was far cooler.

"Spike TV was an excellent rebranding because now it's a men's channel instead of pandering, as everyone who lives east of the Mississippi is an idiot"

Huh? It was The Nashville Network, not The Nashville and the Midwest and the Northeast and The Southeast Network. Try looking at a map, IDIOT.

TROLL FAIL

You have it backwards. It was first The Nashville Network, then was renamed The National Network in 2000 around the time WWF shows moved to the channel. Then it became Spike TV in 2003.

who cares of its rigged/predetermined, we watch it anyways

Posted By: Steve (Guest)  on February 08, 2010 at 07:26 PM

CNN forgot their own renaming to the CLINTON NEWS NETWORK from when Slick Willie was in Office.

Posted By: Stonk (Guest)  on February 08, 2010 at 07:39 PM

They are right on, it was a terrible name change. You can hardly ever say "World Wrestling Entertainment" on TV because it sounds stupid, you can't say "World Wrestling Entertainment Champion" because that doesn't sound like a champion name, can't say "THE WWE," etc. etc.

Posted By: Guest#2429 (Guest)  on February 08, 2010 at 07:42 PM

Guest 2423 Says TNN was all bullriding and hillbilly shows.......hmmm this coming from someone watching grown men with oiled bodies wearing skimpy shows wrestle around together on a mat.....I'm just saying....

What are you saying? What was the point of all of that? You're not funny. Shut the fuck up.

Posted By: MBD (Guest)  on February 08, 2010 at 08:17 PM

I still think the name change is crap.

They used to refer on-air to WWF as "the Federation." You can't exactly refer to it now as "the Entertainment." So they have to say "WWE" every time they want to be self-referential. Can't mix it up anymore.

Not that it's a huge deal, but a little more creativity behind the name change couldn't have hurt.

Posted By: Zack (Guest)  on February 08, 2010 at 08:22 PM

Sounds like Stonk likes bull riding and hillbilly shows

"Persistent rumors that the fights are rigged."

Alright, I'll be writing into them about that. Just so you know.

Because CNN, a Time Warner company, which owned WCW, should know better.

I still think they should have played off the Invasion angle and renamed themselves the WWA, or World Wrestling Alliance. It would play up the fact that the three biggest wrestling organizations are now one. The F in the logo could've easily been converted into an A, as opposed to the nonsensical logo we've had for eight years now, and saying "World Wrestling Alliance" and "The WWA" wouldn't make you sound like an idiot.

If the people posting the replies here are considered smart fans, then I'd hate to think how much stupidity is needed to be classified as a mark.
