USA and Spike Reaction To Monday's Ratings
Posted by Chris Lansdell on 03.09.2010

USA Network's VP of Program Research, Ted Linhart, tweeted the following about last night's ratings:

"Not much of a Monday Night "War". RAW trounced TNA by 275% w/ total viewers. Also Impact much lower than the test Monday ep in early Jan."

Spike is said to be fine with the rating. The 18-34 demographic did well and there was no major drop-off in viewers from their Thursday ratings. It was seen as the first step towards a larger goal for Impact.

Larger goal = FAIL

Not much of a Monday Night "War"?
I guess you're fine with loosing viewers. 3.4 isnt 3.7+

As long as Spike stays happy and they make money. TNA should not worry themselves about the WWE right now. They have enough to worry about in-house.

What a horrible night for me. Hogan did not win the belt. I did not see orlando jones kiss a man. My favorite tag team of all time, the nasty boys weren't on. My inflatable girlfriend sprung a leak. There is a leak coming from the first floor bathroom into the basement and dripping on my bed and flooding my room. I had to promise my mom that I would do extra chores around the house in order for me to stay up late to watch impact. I missed the bus and was late for my job at Subway. What do I get for all my bad luck. Impact scoring a .98 rating. I've given up all hope and lost my love for TNA, Flair, Nasty Boys and Hogan. At less I got to see cleavage when Brooke was on the TV.

Well, as long as Spike is happy then TNA doesn't have much to worry about. I still think they should consider starting the hour before Raw and putting their 2nd hour against Raw's first.

Will Sike be ok with this number 6 months from now? The WWE could humiliate or even kill TNA in 6 months if Vinnie Mac put some effort into booking Raw instead of trundling out the same old tired program.

Spike's happy with a 1.0 rating?? BWAHAHAHA!! A real network wouldve canned TNA by now.

As a TNA fan I am dissapointed. I figured that some of the Monday wrestling audience not aware of TNA wrestling may flip back and forth too see what was going on. I thought TNA did a awful job on the actuall wrestling side of there product. The X-Division fight was not half bad. They should of showcased there better wrestling talents with limited storyline advancement imo.

I knew Spike would be happy.TNA really didn't lose any viewers which is more important than gaining any.

Spike isn't wrong, a huge step back is usually followed by some forward momentum, it's called bouncing. Like when you drop a ball. Spike is a retarded dragon, it has the body it needs to be a challenger, but the head is all fucked up and stupid.

Good for Spike. Expecting to pull a 3.0 on night number one would have been foolish. Keeping an eye on a "larger goal" is what has kept TNA alive.

People said the weekly pay per views would never work. They did.

People said Fox Sports would never work. It did.

People said Spike TV would never work. It did.

People think Monday nights are doomed and they'll go out of business. Those people are wrong.

Regardless of what happens next, TNA has gone from NOBODY being interested and main eventing shows with guys like Ron Killngs, Jerry Lynn, and Malice to being an active, live every other week, show on Monday nights while turning a profit every month. It took them less than eight years to do that.

That makes them the fastest growing wrestling promotion in history.

And if this even slightly encourages WWE to put more effort into their product, then it's good for the business as a whole. Competition brings out the best in everybody.

We should read the USA Rep as saying "Yeah, the ratings went down 6%, but we're going to distract you by pointing out we beat 'competition', whose ratings also did bad, and whose ratings were never really a concern of ours to begin with."

You should read the Spike rep as saying: "Yep. Ratings still suck. When's that big payday coming, Hogan?"

Man, I hate spin doctors.

We need some hard numbers. 275% is just too vague.

Oh wait, nevermind.

See TNA target 18-34. Most of whom witnessed the Attitude era of the E, Where the E targets what 8-12 year olds? Not sure on that one but they are both catering to different audiences and TNA is succeeding there.

Well they never lost any far as I'm concerned WWE and you loser fans of WWE need to give TNA props they went head to head LIVE and never lost any viewers! WWE in fact DID !

I mean were you expecting a 3.0 over night!? All you losers wanna see TNA fail so you can be proud that you watch that kiddy cartoon show called WWE!

Don't blame Hogan! You had STing , RVD, Aj Styles , Flair, Jeff Hardy , Foley, Anderson , Angle and the X Division last night -I'm sorry the fans must be retarded ! This wa sbetter than anything WWE had to offer -especially leading into Wrestlemania ! you guys wanna continue to swallow what Vince has to offer - CENA crap! than continue filling up on the crap! It's clear you love the shit flavor! You bunch of shit eaters !

What are you twats going to do when TNA eventually folds? What will you bitch about then? It's not like WWE is going to improve without the threat of any competition?

It's so fucking funny you want the company to fail and fold. But as soon as it's gone, you'll start lamenting "gee I wish there was some alternative to WWE." Just like you all did with WCW.

My name for you people has never been more accurate.

Before the influx of old talent, TNA WAS an alternative to WWE. Now they're an alternative to time travel.

That was the worst Nitro I've seen in at least 10 years.

You do know a 1.0 rating is pretty good for cable, right?

Also, a network VP bragging via twitter!?!? How old is he...14? 15?

Is there anyone who SERIOUSLY thinks TNA will one day overtake WWE in the ratings??? If so, you're mentally ill. RAW could literally show an empty ring for 2 hrs. and still beat Impact.

Posted By: RDog (Guest)  on March 10, 2010 at 12:23 AM

Didn't Spike TV (then TNN) say they were happy with the XFL's ratings back in 2001. Yea that worked well for them. What did you expect them to say with TNAs ratings, we F**ked up Big TIme!

TNA formula

Show Hogan and Flair for 30 minutes.

Show RVD and Hardy for 3.

Great idea.

the spike comment is the big thing.

The only one's wanting to try and make it a war are WWE fans and Hogan/Bishoff.

other things in TNa, i'd say most of their fans, their longer term wrestlers and most of all Spike know really the big plus for them is going monday night and being able to deliver the same numbers, only over time would it ever go up, at present WWE are on the road to wrestlemania and thus it's main part of their storylines, TNA has its chance more in the summer when things die down abit.

difference with WCW was WCW owners and TV company wanted success and to be no.1 ASAP, the Tv company with TNA doesn't

First off, to convey my objectivity, TNA did technically "epic fail" against RAW.

But you have to remember one important detail.

Yeah sure, RAW lost .3 vs last week. But they lost it during the ROAD TO WRESTLEMANIA. They shouldn't be losing anybody during this time if they're doing things right. Too bad their product is doing nothing but treading water. Much like in the health care debate, I am not OK with the status quo! And yes I just compared professional wrestling to a health insurance reform bill. Deal with it!

I think what this shows is that a very small percentage of WWE's viewership actually cares about the TNA product. TNA is basically going to have to get Stone Cold or The Rock to try to outdo WWE.

Also, TNA sucks. It's a fact.

TNA should go against Smackdown first. Go against the taped show that is vulnerable and then attack Raw.

And since Bichoff only cares about ratings, he will now have RUsso hotshot angles - Sting will probably be a face by the end of the month and his heel turn will never again be mentioned.

Also they completely WASTED RVD - you get a guy that has not been seen in years and instead of having him hang with Sting, you have him get beat down???

Dumb, dumb, dumb

Damn skippy. I'd rather have my choice of which tasty nugget of crap to chow down on than be force fed only one option.

If you've gotta eat poo, at least there should be a choice.

Like someone coming up to you and saying

"I'm going to slap you either upside the head either way, do you want the left or right hand".

At least there is a choice and you have a 50/50 chance one will hurt less than the other based on whether your assailant is left or right handed.

Always better to have some small choice, even if the outcome will still be painful.

"

WCW's owners are the reason why we don't have a WCW anymore and the only person who cared about WCW was Ted Turner. Even when Nitro was at it's most successful the suits at Turner (later AOL Time-Warner) hated having it on their networks and if they had more of a say in it it would have been canceled long before 2001. One of the main reasons WCW isn't around anymore is because they lost TV in 2001 and Bischoff couldn't find a sponsor to get it back on the air. At least Spike actually wants wrestling on their network and is willing to give TNA some respect.

Interesting that no one bothered to compared the first regular Monday night "Impact!" with the debut of WCW "Monday Nitro" in 1995.

On that first "Nitro," Eric Bischoff pulled off what would turn out to be the first of many, many surprises when Lex Luger showed up, fresh from a WWE pay-per-view the night before.

About the biggest surprise that could have happened on "Impact!" would have been the appearance of Shane McMahon, having quit the WWE at the end of 2009. It certainly would have stunned Vince far more than Shane-O-Mac's appearance on "Nitro" during that extraordinary simulcast between "Nitro" and "Raw" on the Monday after WWE announced its purchase of WCW in 2001.

As for the ratings, nobody at TNA expected "Impact!" to score anywhere near a 3.0, but frankly, the show was such a stinker -- I had expected much better -- that its 1.0 rating came as no surprise to me.

TNA is going into this new Monday Night War with a totally different attitude than WCW. WCW was out to put WWE out of business. TNA's made it clear that it wanted to give wrestling fans a choice on Monday nights.

My only concern is for TNA to avoid repeating WCW's mistakes -- Hulk Hogan and Ric Flair returning to in-ring action being one of them. They should both stay retired.
