Excellent marketing strategy on the part of TNA. A must watch!

Posted By: Barbarash (Guest)  on July 29, 2011 at 12:33 PM

No surprise in this move. TNA hasnt much originality and all you TNA marks know this deep down inside. TNA should really learn to branch out and do their own thing. That is how WCW did it. the WCW gave the fans something new and entertaining. TNA hasnt given anyone something new in 8 years.

Posted By: Guest#0806 (Guest)  on July 29, 2011 at 12:33 PM

Looks to me like they're desperate and want to try and fool some of the fans into thinking he's going to come to TNA, personally. I know they own footage of Punk in TNA, but... still seems kind of bush league to me.

Posted By: Triple B (Guest)  on July 29, 2011 at 12:34 PM

Now the kids can see Phillip in his prime.
He should be thankful they're doing this.

Funny how TNA has no faith in their own roster.

Hey, I never knew CM Punk competed on TNA. I am curious and I will check this out!

Hahahaha, shameless.

Good idea though.

WWE sues TNA for trying to cash in on a WWE trademark. Bye bye TNA

Let's see how Spencer Mallard can justify this...

That's bush. Bush league.

Posted By: Ron Burgandy (Guest)  on July 29, 2011 at 12:43 PM

If ever they were going to cash in, now is the time. It's opportunistic sure, but this is the wrestling *business*, it's all about making money.

Posted By: Nick M. (Guest)  on July 29, 2011 at 12:46 PM

It'll get more buys than TNA PPVs at least.

I like this. I will buy it. Thank you, TNA!!!

TNA does own the right to CM Punks TNA career. SO, they have every right to cash in on it. Sorry, WWWE fans, WWE cannot do anything about this!

"That is how WCW did it. the WCW gave the fans something new and entertaining. TNA hasnt given anyone something new in 8 years."
- Guest#0806-

Uh wrong on so many levels.
WCW NEVER gave the fans something new and entertaining. They gave you Hogan and a million NWO factions.

TNA has only been arounf for 9 years. So you are saying that TNA was only entertaining in it's first year?

Please get a clue!

I like this. Makes sense. They have footage of Punk's career. Take advantage of it.

Who wants to bet that most people praising this here is like one person! Seriously speaking, it's not a bad move to sell their punk footage now that he's the IT thing right now. Still it really is bush league to captialize on another Fed's talent. It's even more bush league to use an existing talent to capitalize on a 3 year old film (TDK's joker). And the most bush league thing ever? Missing the point about the attitude era, and making nonsencial turns, stupid inane twists, and load your product with excessive blood and tits as "counter programming" to PG WWE. Let's see TNA rip off the summer of punk story with a returning jeff hardy...losers.

Posted By: gooched (Guest)  on July 29, 2011 at 01:01 PM

Got me hooked. I am paying to see this. Just more greta footage to add to my main man CM Punk's wrestling career. Thanks, TNA!

Brilliant move.

Posted By: wallter (Guest)  on July 29, 2011 at 01:03 PM

You cant really blame them. In the past ROH also cashed in on ROH stars that moved to WWE. If you can make money out of it, then go for it, its their own footage.

But at the same time, it does send out a bad signal. You are basicly saying you cant create your own stars, so you have to cash in on your competition's succes. This does make TNA look kinda bush league.

Posted By: Guest#5404 (Guest)  on July 29, 2011 at 01:03 PM

HAHAHA!!!

TNA is about to make a LOT of money off CM Punk! I love it, I love it, I love it!!!

Russo will probably think he's on the roster too and make him the TNA champ, via the "Not having to be there or in a match on a pole match!"

Posted By: Lord Keedik (Guest)  on July 29, 2011 at 01:08 PM

You TNA people make me laugh. This is old footage meanwhile the WWE has the current Cult of Personality himself CM PUNK. Its not like he's going there either. Plus you prob can youtube this footage at some point. So STFU TNA still and will always be garbage. TNA is a company of many traits but masters of nothing.

wow - highlighting the guy currently involved in the WWE's biggest angle. They'll make a few bucks...but holy s^%$ this comes off as pathetic. Maybe next month they'll charge us to view John Cena's old high school football games.

Such a small time company. This makes them look bush league.

Posted By: Nandy (Guest)  on July 29, 2011 at 01:12 PM

Really? I mean, I see the point of getting people to sign up for the on-demand service and what not, but c'mon. They're going to show him losing to Jason Cross week-in and week-out, only to remind people how much better he is now??

Fellas, just remember, for those of you who talk about WWE "wasting" CM Punk, he did nothing but job during the Weekly PPV days.

Posted By: Team J-Rod (Guest)  on July 29, 2011 at 01:12 PM

This isn't 'epic fail' by any means as it will make money and probably be a good set, but at the same time it just shows how little star power TNA has that they need to make their money by leeching off a WWE main eventer who's not even with the damn company.

Posted By: Frie (Guest)  on July 29, 2011 at 01:12 PM

Please be more pathetic,TNA. How about building and focusing on your own stars?

This news and the TNAss-kissing comments reminds me of Sting's return promo that ripped off Undertaker's return promo...

...and how sad it was on TNA's side.

This must be what CM Punk is going to address this coming monday on RAW.

I knew he was considering TNA this whole time. This only cements it.

More proof this company lives off of already created names whereas their number of created names is basically you flashing the peace sign. Just plain sad.
I don't ever wish bad things on people but I'm giving this company about another year before they go under..maybe even less.

By the logic used by several posters, the WWE should never advertise or broadcast any of their Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, or Sting footage on thier on demand service... (to use the most notable examples of the current TNA roster who the WWE has advertised for thier service in the last year or so)

Posted By: The Ogre (Guest)  on July 29, 2011 at 01:20 PM

tna on demand.. sounds like porn. they should really change the name of the company asap

haha tna fuckin blows dick after they failed to try and sign punk to their roster but hhh outsmarted tna and resigned him for more money and they try pull this to think that they actually even had punk. tna is so bush league ha

Posted By: Guest#9261 (Guest)  on July 29, 2011 at 01:23 PM

Just like when WWE.com featured Christian matches after he won the TNA title...
Wait, what's that? That never happened? Because it looks weak when you just ride the coattails of your supposed competition's hottest angle in years by trying to make a quick buck of it, rather than by coming up with your own captivating angles?
Oh, sorry, the brilliant commenters like The Fuj and Barbarash like it, and they don't just blindly support anything TNA does even if it's particularly shameless, so this must be a good move...

Posted By: Fire Wes Kirk (Guest)  on July 29, 2011 at 01:24 PM

The WWF used to do pretty much the same thing back in 97-98, as they would show Macho and Hogan in their classic/vintage match segments, while both were top players in WCW. However, due to the longevity of the WWF, this seemed like they were proving that stars like that were made only in the WWF, and anywhere else they go would be a step down. The basic problem here is that TNA has no real identity. Finally, business is business, so why not put old CM Punk matches on their website?

Posted By: Lobo (Guest)  on July 29, 2011 at 01:24 PM

its sad that tna would again ignore its current young talent and spend money and tv time on a wwe star.can u say wcw.

Posted By: john ace (Guest)  on July 29, 2011 at 01:28 PM

@ All of the people saying "smart move, great marketing etc."

I am an advertising student. I've taken marketing classes. This is NOT a brilliant move in anyway other than to make a few quick dollars from people purchasing the OD Video. This does NOTHING to build TNA's brand image. If anything, the misleading ad will hurt their credibility by implying that Punk is going to be joining the roster (which is not happening). This is a low-class attempt to trick a fraction of the audience into thinking that Punk will be joining TNA to gain some attention. This is pathetic.

Posted By: AdvertisingMajor (Guest)  on July 29, 2011 at 01:31 PM

What's with all the paid trolls today? TNA's desperation is really showing.

Posted By: Guest#1017 (Guest)  on July 29, 2011 at 01:31 PM

Get a life TNA, if u gave a shit about bettering your talent instead of scooping up every old guy you can...you might have a watchable product. I hope you guys go out of business asap.

RVD-please come back to the E. Show that no talent bum Kofi how you actually kick someone in the fucking head

Anderson-come back to the E. I since an interesting feud w/ Orton or alignment w/ Christian.

Sting rest up and come fight Taker this year at Wrestlemania 28. Then you get your wrestlemania moment and a hall of fame induction. PLus your fans will get a decent Sting DVD

Flair- STOP wrestling, come back to the E and manage Mr.No Charisma Morrison or the already charismatic Zack Ryder

AJ Styles- Take the X division to the E

Jarret and Angle- Please retire both of you.

Abyss- You could have a Wrestlemania moment w/ Kane. Monster vs Monster. Its better than anything you've done in 3 years if not longer. Then retire, you're not very good.

Vince Russo- Jump off a bridge. Seriously...EVERYONE HATES YOU!!!

Mike Tenay- Come replace Michael Cole

Seriously every week I just feel TNA is getting closer and closer to the fate of WCW. They're making a lot of the same mistakes.

And Finally TNA

Don't ever fool yourselves into thinking that Punk would have anything to do with your garbage show. Other than old videos you dug up.

BANG!!!!

Congratulations, TNA, on a business decision that puts you on equal footing with the likes of FIP, IWA:MS, UWF, USWA and post-bankruptcy AWA who have all done this before.

Most rational comment here. It's made worse, though, now that Punk is back "in" WWE. If he was still off doing random appearances, it would work a little better.

TNA should probably also sign Luke Gallows and make him the champ. Then have him mimic Punk's walking out. If you're going to be derivative, do it well.

Posted By: Guest#9041 (Guest)  on July 29, 2011 at 02:05 PM

Yep. I guess if you can't get your own stuff over you should jump on someone elses work.

Posted By: The Coach (Guest)  on July 29, 2011 at 02:10 PM

Didn't WWE use Hogan's name in games and footage and all that? It's the same thing.

Posted By: Guest#2231 (Guest)  on July 29, 2011 at 02:10 PM

I don't have a real problem with this, it's not like their selling his matches on dvd(like ROH), they're just putting some of his matches on their website, plus it's not like WWE has never done it before, I mean Sting's never worked for WWE, yet they always show his matches & they can because they own it, just like TNA owns the Punk matches. Is it cashing in when someone's a hot commodity? Yes, but let's not act like TNA's the only ones who do it.

Posted By: Guest#7819 (Guest)  on July 29, 2011 at 02:14 PM

lol @ anybody who thinks Punk was in his prime during one of this companies most awful periods.

Posted By: MWF (Guest)  on July 29, 2011 at 02:22 PM

Putting his matches online isn't a bad move. They have the footage, why not profit a bit from it. The really pathetic part is the logo with "CM Punk is Coming..." That is meant to purposely mislead the fan on something TNA can't possible deliver on since the implication is that Punk himself is coming to TNA. That's what bothers me about the whole thing and that's what really makes it a bush-league move since they're taking advantage of their own fanbase.

Posted By: Guest#7320 (Guest)  on July 29, 2011 at 02:36 PM

I hope WWE sees this. When the only other company is trying to cash in on one of your guys how can you not act like he's your biggest star? As in the guy who should be champ for a long, long time.

Posted By: guy listening (Guest)  on July 29, 2011 at 02:38 PM

Posted By: NorTheGreat (Guest) on July 29, 2011 at 01:43 PM

What's happening here is completely different than selling a "Legends DVD.
TNA is selling matches from when Punk would wrestle in some NWA promotions. VERY loosely affiliated with the TNA product that gets put up every week on television.
The reason a DVD for guys like Warrior or Bret Hart works is because they are guys who built their career under the WWE/F brand name and are since retired. Selling a DVD of guys like them reminds the audience of some of the great performers who have been through the company.
What TNA is doing is attempting to make a few

What TNA is doing is attempting to make a few quick dollars off of somebody who is HUGE in a different company right now. They do not promote their own talent or storylines. This does NOTHING for the company outside of sell products to people who already watch TNA. Also, as I mentioned earlier it hurts their overall image by having a very misleading ad.

I thought it was odd that this article had 78 comments, but then I saw that 50 of them were from the same guy.

As for Punk and TNA: This really is a sad reminder of how TNA can't make their own stars.

I love people complaining about this when they don't open their mouths over WWE using Sting or Hogan's WCW footage for dvds. Also the "Sting is ripping off the Joker" thing is dumb. Sting started dressing like the Crow almost 3 years after the movie, which is the same timetable as this one. Stop trying to find things to complain about.

Not to be a topper but I have an MBA and my undergraduate degree was Marketing plus I've spent the last 5 years as a brand manager for a billion dollar telecom... and I must say... you are right. But don't stop at just this, TNA has no concept of branding and even if they did, the don't have a quality product to market. All they can do is embelish and decieve... there is no positive message to deliver...

This is, once again, a great example of why no other wrestling company is going to ever catch the WWE ever again. Instead of building CM Punk up when they had him and taking advantage then, they now have to settle for riding the coat tails of the WWE by airing his old matches thereby giving WWE and Punk more attention when they should focusing on the wrestlers they have working for them NOW. The equivalent to this would be if WCW had started showing old Austin matches on Nitro when he started to catch fire in WWE. Or, more to the point, when they gave away Foley's title win and everyone switched channels. TNA is basically saying, "Hey, aren't those other guys great? Look at what they're doing!" It was stupid then and it's stupid now. TNA had a chance to do something similar to what WWE is doing with Punk now when Joe was champ, but they fucked it up. If WWE doesn't botch this Punk thing, I have a feeling that it may be too late for TNA. They've had a million chances to cash-in on the WWE's mistakes and they haven't once. The last thing they need is for the WWE to start REALIZING it's mistakes and fixing them. Imagine if the WWE had ran with the whole Austin deal BEFORE the NWO hit. WCW may have never had a chance. I feel like the success of Punk means the end of TNA, ultimately. While TNA spins it's wheels trotting out one more old name after another, WWE starts raiding ROH talent and, shuddergasp, actually pushing them! TNA should start building their own stars and stop focusing on the stars of their biggest threat. It's all right there on the "Rise and Fall of WCW" DVD. Check it out, Dixie.

Fail troll is fail.

For those without the benefit of cognitive accumen, he is trolling as TNA will obviously promote the matches he has when Punk was in TNA years ago.

So no, he is NOT going back there.

TNA has only been around for 9 years. So you are saying that TNA was only entertaining in it's first year?

Please get a clue!

I like this. Makes sense. They have footage of Punk's career. Take advantage of it.

Posted By: Rich (Guest) on July 29, 2011 at 12:58 PM

Rich, I am a huge WWE fan, I will admit. However, the first year of TNA I was a fan of both productions. Then after the first year we saw TNA try more and more to copy WWE till it was a B show rendition and is still the same today (8 years later). All the haters in TNA have ruined the company trying to be something they aren't. TNA should branch out with there own talent and their own talents persona and not try to make then either - macho man, HHH, Kane, and so on. Until TNA can become their own entity, they will always be in the far distant shadow of the Great WWE. All of you TNA marks know what I am saying is true. All of you TNA marks know you want your own production and not a cheap copy. Until all of you swallow your pride and demand it; TNA will never make it out of a sound studio and school gyms.

Because trying to cash in footage of matches from wrestlers who no longer work for you is something the WWE would never do, just ask the Ultimate Warrior.

What about the Self Destruction Of The Ultimate Warrior dvd, or what about those new Warrior acton figurines?

NWO...sure because they own the NWO through WCW and was done before hogan went to TNA....sting footage, not sure about that one. I havenet seen the new stink shown. number 1 and number 2 sting yes. But the sting in the TNA is the third on. Or didnt you TNA marks know that. two stings have retired and this is the washed out third. The first on is a preacher and was the best sting.

CM Punk is coming to TNA on demand.com is not misleading. If anyone is fooled by that, well, that's pretty stupid.

Seconded. It's ruining the comment sections. It's difficult to find the comments from real fans among the flood of obvious viral marketing comments throughout this website.

And for anyone crying about the "anti-TNA" bias this website supposedly has, they let the TNA viral marketing team infest their comment section to the point of rendering it unreadable, so they can't be that anti-TNA.

Posted By: Spencer Mallard (Guest) on July 29, 2011 at 01:00 PM

I would love for someone to explain this type of post. If it's all part of some TNA guerilla marketing campaign (flooding message boards with this kind of crapulence) then it makes no sense because it doesn't make anyone with a brain really think that TNA is #1 at anything. If it's a real dude, who is really expressing his point of view, then it's just sad and delusional. Either way it's nonsensical.

Posted By: Guest#0806 (Guest) on July 29, 2011 at 12:33 PM

At least until mommy needs to go downstairs to do laundry. Make sure your cumsocks are in the wash.

It's business, dumbasses. TNA has EVERY right to use their OWN footage. WWE does NOT own it, so they have no legal standing.

WWE has owned footage of Sting and Hogan and the NWO since they purchased WCW and have been showing footage of them way before they went to TNA. Secondly how pathetic would it be if they cut off footage of Sting or Hulk from classic WCW compilation DVDs? They helped make WCW where as CM Punk was just another of the boys in TNA

At least he's getting an education in a time where education is expendable due to the recession.

And for anyone that says, "WWE does the same thing for Hogan, Flair, and Sting", the difference is the Legends already had their spotlight. Punk is starting to get his spotlight, and TNA is already cashing in. It really shows the lack of patience they unfortunately have.

Difference is "the Crow" Sting was mysterious and interesting, especially in the context of the NWO storyline. But this "Joker" Sting is just that - a joke. I can't even come close to taking it seriously. They want you to think he's "crazy" and he's a "threat" to Hogan and Bischoff - why? he's old and he sucks. he should just be putting over the young guys.

The thing is, once the fans are done watching this, they're gonna want to see more Punk, which would require switching over to WWE programming.

D'oh.

So true - way different then showing Sting or Hogan in your vids, esp since no one wants to see more of them.

Seriously Ashish / Czonka... quit posting all the blatant TNA social media marketing interns' comments at the beginning of every TNA post. It is pathetic that they have to invest in that instead of being less embarassing.

Posted By: Dan (Guest) on July 29, 2011 at 02:57 PM

^THESE.^ Seriously, 411, are you taking money from TNA for all this free wank-space you're giving their unpaid volunteers? Or are your moderators just that terrible at their jobs?

Now....don't you have some Cena posters to cum all over?

Posted By: Guest#9405 (Guest) on July 29, 2011 at 06:00 PM

I'm sorry, E-smark, but don't you have some Cena posters to go jizz on?

Posted By: Guest#5127 (Guest) on July 29, 2011 at 06:03 PM

Dear "DiamondCutter"

You're not fooling anyone. Go back to your jizzing on your Cena posters. Don't you have some fantasizing to do, fag boy?

Posted By: Guest#1196 (Guest) on July 29, 2011 at 06:04 PM

I'll bet this sad blockhead doesn't even see the irony of what he's doing. Speaking of, perhaps JACKING OFF TO ALL THOSE HOGAN POSTERS LIKE A TYPICAL TNASSPIRATE has rendered him myopic in more ways than one.

Cashing in on the hard work of another company? Now THAT is smart business strategy! Go TNA!

I didn't need another reason to watch TNA, but this is still great news! TNA is A-OKAY!

Maybe Dixie is as smart as she is beautiful! TNA is really taking off now!

Oh ho ho! Looks like AdvertisingMajor has some buddies in the room! They both eat Ramen noodles, and have the same Bob Marley poster! One of you guys needs to write his name on the back, so you know who's is who's!

Maybe one of you dudes took an MMA class, so you can offer smarmy analysis on the Alistair Overeem thing! It's nice to get people that really (want us to think that they) know what they're talking about on this site.
