Bret Hart Discusses Harry Smith’s Release, His Current Relationship with Shawn Michaels and More
Posted by George H. Sirois on 08.20.2011

While promoting his upcoming Irish tour with American Wrestling Rampage, WWE Hall of Famer Bret "Hitman" Hart spoke with Duane Doogan and Luke Barry from Wrestling Voice about returning to Europe, Harry Smith's release, his current relationship with Shawn Michaels and much more.

Here are some highlights:

On his relationship with Shawn Michaels: "I suspected from the very beginning that me and Shawn, our handshake, would be more BS than anything else and that we were still going to loath each other and hate each others guts for the rest of our lives, but the truth is that he was very humbled and grateful that I was willing to forgive everything and the reality is we were able to become good friends since then. Knowing that it really meant something to him, meant something to me and we actually have a really good friendship now.

I think Shawn was always a bit of a prima donna and I didn't think he'd be sincere when he shook my hand and the gratification I get over a few weeks and months after that, you could really see it was a weight lifted of his back and he seemed appreciative and grateful that we could be on good terms again."

On his WrestleMania match with Vince: "I thought it was perfect, I loved having my family out there, I loved having my brothers and sisters play the lumberjacks and I think fans got what they wanted even though it wasn't the old Bret Hart, but the truth is I'm never gonna be that Bret Hart, the technical wrestler, I'm basically gonna be more of a character for the rest of my career, my days of taking suplexes and diving over the top rope are over."

On Harry Smith's release: "It's unfortunate, but these things happen, you might look at it as a setback but you might look at it as a blessing in disguise, I think he's a great talent, but needs to reinvent himself and by stepping away from WWE might be a nice break, but I don't doubt that in time he'll be back in WWE. He's still young and a great talent.

He needs to step away and look to reinvent himself, my brother Owen left the company years ago when he was wrestling as the Blue Blazer and he got out of WWE and did some different tours and promotions and then came back a couple years later and found the footing he was looking for when he came back."

Being placed #4 behind Steve Austin, The Undertaker & Shawn Michaels on WWE's 50 Greatest Superstars of All Time DVD: "I beat Steve Austin every time I worked with him throughout my career and yet he he's graded above him, so figure that out. I could give you a list of 50 wrestlers and it would have credibility because I would have an idea but some guy that's working for WWE Magazine that makes it up frankly, he can kiss my ass, he doesn't know anything."

Typical Bret, rated 4th and he takes it as an insult.

If I were Bret, I would be honored to be ranked near Austin, 'Taker and Michaels.

Let's face it, The Rock and Hulk Hogan both deserve to be in the top three somewhere with Austin. That list was a joke.

hey brett you know its fake right?

I'm a huge Hart fan but he took that Top 50 thing too seriously, that kind of argument should be left to fans on the internet lol. While I do think he is the best wrestler of all time, if it is from the WWE Magazine it is kayfabe so the other 3 should be ahead of him because they were involved in bigger matches/angles. But it is odd that if kayfabe it would ignore the fact that Bret did always beat Austin, winning matters(a bit) in kayfabe.

No words for this type of nonsense. I love Bret but he is the ultimate mark for himself.

Its great to see that bret has come to terms that he will never be a wrestler ever again its sad maybe the old farts in Tna should take note, On Austin I love Bret as much as the next guy but Austin Is the most popular wrestler to have ever lived, he was the main reason I started watching back in 1999 and was the reason millons did to (With help from the rock)

No one told Bret wrestling isn't real...

Although I've never beat Steve Austin. So what do I know?

Posted By: SomeDude (Guest)  on August 20, 2011 at 10:24 AM

Because the best criteria to decide the top guy in a business where the winner is predetermined is obviously how many wins he has over another person. That makes sense.

Man Bret needs to chill the fuck out. Shawn beat you in a fake entertainment match fucking years and years ago because it was best for business. It took them that long to sort it out and even now he's going on about Shawn seeming humbled like Bret was in the right all along. Not only that but he then proceeds to bitch and whine about Steve Austin being above him in these fake rankings that someone created to sell another WWE DVD. Did this guy ever grow up?

Wow between this and fucking handshakegate I can see why I've finally gotten over wrestling.

Well Bret, maybe Austin's up there because he cut better promos and drew a hell of a lot more money for the company than you did. Just sayin'.

My, aren't we feeling ourselves Bret? It was nice of you to lower yourself to forgive HBK. And the Steve Austin thing? Let's just put the whole "wrestling is fake" thing aside. It takes two to tango. Ever think you two brought out the best in each other?

Posted By: #Imjustsayin... (Guest)  on August 20, 2011 at 11:03 AM

Every time you think that Bret Hart finally has his head on straight, he goes ahead and shows that he's still his own biggest mark. As much as I can appreciate his matches, there is no way that Bret ranks lower than Steve Austin in a top 50 WWE superstar list, who after all was largely responsible for the resurgence of wrestling in the 90's. In fact, I'd be hard pressed to put Hart in the top five, with Hogan and possibly Savage in front of him. Bret was solid at carrying the company during the lean times of the mid 90's, but that was about it.

Posted By: Michael L (Guest)  on August 20, 2011 at 11:03 AM

Y'know, I like Bret Hart's wrestling persona. I like his do-gooder persona. But, his personal outlooks, and stuff.. Well, they kind of piss me off. Such as his reaction to being ranked #4. Nevermind the fact he was ranked in the top five. In his opinion, Stone Cold didn't deserve to beat him out. Whatever.

Posted By: save_us.djs (Guest)  on August 20, 2011 at 11:05 AM

Geez Bret, I'm a huge fan of yours, but please stop sounding like such a mark for yourself already!

Posted By: Insayne Wayne (Guest)  on August 20, 2011 at 11:06 AM

I'm a long time Bret Hart fan, but I don't like the tone of those Shawn comments: they still sound very accusatory.

The Austin comments are just laughable.

Lol@ Bret: "I beat Steve Austin every time I worked with him."

Have you ever noticed how some of the old school guys blur the lines of kayfabe sometimes? Like, you'll be listening to a Flair interview or something, and he'll be shooting on someone, and then all the sudden it breaks into something about how he "beat so-and-so for the world title THREE TIMES!!!"

That's hard-wiring right there. You can't just turn it off!

Bret's complaints about his position on the Top 50 Superstars list strike me as odd. That list has a lot of problems, but Bret's position isn't one of them; a solid top 10 finish is just about right.

If it was "top 50 wrestlers", then Bret in the top 3 would make sense. If it was actually "top 50 superstars", then, let's face it, the line starts behind Hogan, Austin, and Rock.

Posted By: HeartBurnKid (Guest)  on August 20, 2011 at 11:27 AM

I'm a huge Bret mark, but quotes like this just show how seriously he takes the business, and maybe too seriously. I think he should be happy with his placing, because almost everyone should be below Austin.

Sorry Bret, but Austin drew more money and sold more merch than you did. He was the lead star during one of the most profitable periods in wrestling history.

But he is right, that list was shit in a lot of ways

There's no way to please everybody with these "best of" lists. That said, telling someone to "kiss your ass" because they disagree with you is beneath Bret. And winning scripted matches against an opponent in no way proves you're better than them.

Posted By: Guest#0079 (Guest)  on August 20, 2011 at 11:42 AM

Same old Bret. Used to be my favorite wrestler. Now he takes a shot at Steve over a fake list, makes Shawn sound like the screwjob and heat were all HIS fault, and he tosses in a subtle prima donna insult just for good measure.

Bret, your 20 chair shot match with Vince sucked. It was five years too late. You can't live without hating on people. You were a serial cheater to the woman who gave you all those kids, you make fun of Ric Flair because he couldn't walk away like you and Hogan (even though Goldberg retired you), and according to Julie Hart, none of your kids like you that much.

Bret wants to make fun of how Hogan turned out, but his life aint that much better. At least Hogan's legacy is in tact.

If Hulk Hogan isn't number 1 and Flair and Rock aren't in the top 4 then the list is a joke. The Undertaker and Bret takes a back seat to those guys and Austin and HBK.

Posted By: Guest#3983 (Guest)  on August 20, 2011 at 12:17 PM

First of all you guys need to chill with the negativity. Austin and Bret are good friends in real life, infact Austin himself has said in an interview for the "WWE Championship" book that he thinks the greatest wrestler in wwe history is a tie between Bret and Shawn. And if anyone saw the actual list than you know Bret like the rest of us was scratching his head when he saw the list I mean come on man Hogan at #23, Cena above Flair, wtf. Anyway it's nice to know that Bret and Shawn, the two greatest wrestlers ever are actually friends now.

I don't think that was an example of a WWE success story. I think it was an example of how NOT being in the WWE can help one grow as a wrestler far more than being in the WWE, thereby better preparing them for the spotlight

Bret is lucky I did not rate this because there is NO WAY he would make the top 10. What a piece of crap this guy is to go on about how he beat Austin. People always bash Hogan for thinking how great he was. Hogan is nothing compaired to Bret in the arrogent department! I never liked Bret hart and now I know why. To me he was never anything special!

It is a little sad when wrestlers think their scripted victories mean they're the better wrestler. Bret may have got the better of Austin in the scripted battles but it was Austin who led the WWE resurgence against WCW whilst Bret headlined during one of the worst times for PPV buy rates. Don't get me wrong, Bret Hart is up there with the likes of Austin, Flair and Benoit when it comes to wrestlers I could watch forever but he needs to realise that wrestling isn't a real professional sport - something he's struggled with ever since the Montreal screwjob.

Posted By: JAK (Guest)  on August 20, 2011 at 02:06 PM

"My, aren't we feeling ourselves Bret? It was nice of you to lower yourself to forgive HBK."

Sigh, of all people Nash was right. To guest 0079 it's beneath him, he just showing his colors now unfortunately so get ready for what would be perceived as an anti-Bret rant (aka the simple TRUTH)

Now this is what I've been trying to say about Bret for the longest time but of course many on the IWC still think it's cool to bypass his apparent arrogance in order to only focus on Shawn's (as if he's the only one who's literally gotten away with murder lol). Hell his own sister tried to tell you, his wife, or ex for that matter, Dynamite Kid (in his book) and Bad News Brown (dispelling that he's never hurt anyone) tried to tell you but none would listen. (Given that most whom I've named have umm... "issues" as well all claims have been backsided by fans, but not Bret ironically)

Well most who would tell the truth about this man would say "oh you're just an HBK mark, it doesn't matter" and as if that negates anything said and it wouldn't matter anyhow lol! Besides, none of you would never said that and took anything said about his old rival as the Holy Gospel (see the recent Helms drama). I always found that ironic, now that he's bragg..oops said so much about what HE'S done in his own book.

All in all, I wish they quit asking him about HBK, (yes I know a dvd is coming out) but he really needs to get HBK off his mind seriously, if that's ever possible (yes Montreal I know)

Listen morons, his quote was also taken out of context. For all you know, he mentioned that it was just a silly list, and that he doesn't care. Interviewers egg people into saying things, and then take the quotes out of context to mean what they want it to. Don't be so stupid as to assume that the quote was ALL that Bret said. Also, making more money doesn't mean you are better. Rock is NOWHERE NEAR Bret's level. Not even f'n close.

Posted By: Yup (Guest)  on August 20, 2011 at 02:23 PM

Another thing, didn't he do this (public row at that) with the guy who ranked him 14 on the best Canadian wrestler list? What I'm saying is that we've allowed him to smell himself and be the victim of all victims for years (via Montreal, his loved ones dying) and now I'm afraid we've created a monster who knows that when folks, even his own fans get over it, he'll have to as well and he's milking this for all it's worth. He thinks it'll still get folks to like/respect/feel sorry for him, well in his mind. He can't see it and frankly he wouldn't care to. All he has to do is bring up anything and it's back to "aww you poor thing death to the others" even though he came back to the same organization. (Yes I know it was for closure of some sorts but still)

Why do so many commenters here find the concept of a wrestler maintaining an element of kayfabe so alien? Bret's whole shtick was being the "best there ever will be" so of course he thinks he should be at #1.

lol, Bret Hart is such an egomaniac. Lists are subjective, no need to get so upset :)

...and Hogan should be #1 always. He had mainstream success and was a household name. Hell, he made wrestling mainstream, regardless if he's a twat or not.

You seriously have got to be joking. Sammartino with his punch-kick, punch-kick offense? Did he ever use anything other than an atomic drop or back body drop? Sure he drew (primarily in one territory), but putting him ahead of the rock for having the same match over and over. He may have been a legit tough guy, but a tremendous worker he was not.

I thought the same about Bret taking the top 50 too seriously at first but then I thought he could have said it as a joke. I could easily picture him saying it in a tongue in cheek kinda way. We don't know so we can't really comment now can we people.

Someone needs to tell Bret that wrestling isn't real and that being better has nothing to do with wins/losses and more to do with merch and ticket sales.

In my opinion, Bret Hart shouldn't have even been in the top 10. The only reason he belongs anywhere on the list is because he got so much TV exposure.

Till the comment on being ranked 4th, Bret seemed to be a gentleman. The list was greatest ..not best. SCSA was greater than anyone other than Hogan.

He always comes across as the biggest whinger

>Jesus, everybody calm down. It's obvious this was tounge in cheek. It's well known that bret and austin are friends. For god's sake, Austin inducted him into the hall of fame.<

No, it's not tongue in cheek. Anyone who has ever seen his real shoot interviews has sen how seriously he takes this. Scott Hall talked about how Bret had everyone over in Calgary and he had pictures of himself in gear in every room of the house. He's a notorious mark for himself.

The more Bret has revealed about him self over the last 10 years, the less I started liking him.

Hey Hitman, if it was a greatest "technical wrestlers/workers" of all time you'd be ahead of Austin. But still behind HBK. But it was greatest SUPERSTARS, and #4 was actually TOO HIGH! Last I checked Austin beat HBK yet he's ahead of Austin. Probably why Montreal Screwjob happend...you still haven't realized it's PREDETERMINED! Hart was a great wrestler...no doubt but an even greater mark for himself!

Yet as far as actual wrestlers I would have him behind Rick Steamboat and HBK.

Hey gashouse, you know he knows its fake, right?

AND the ONLY reason Austin is above Bret is......T-SHIRT SALES!!!!!

For all the trollin marks that somehow cant understand what Bret meant by "I beat Austin everytime", MEANING that Bret was always BOOKED HIGHER than Austin when they wrestled on the card together.

Cue the "He must also think its real" trolls in 3....2.....

Also google "Kayfabe" it may help you "little jimmys" out a bit!

when bret dies and goes to heaven im sure that the first thing God will tell him is that he was always God's favourite wrestler. Even had him ranked above Ric Flair AND Jesus

After all these years Bret still seems slightly bitter. Everyone will chide him for this but I'll just relax, man, you've had a great career.

Anyone remember in "Wrestling with Shadows" how nice Michaels was to Bret's kid? He was basically babysitting him in the ring and you could tell by the kids reaction this was a regular type thing. It was clear that the two men were friends and business got in the way.

Bret Hart will never get that every dispute was about business and any action taken was never about hating him.

To Bret Hart everything was always personal where with Michaels he just wanted what he wanted and would do whatever he had to do- to Bret or anyone else- to get it.

I watched that DVD, and they clearly explain that the other wrestlers/superstars were the ones who did the ranking. So it's a peer review thing, like the Oscars. Explains why Hogan was like #20

Bret Hart is the best in ring storyteller there ever was...not the greatest talker...didn`t sell the most tee-shirts...didn`t bump in a cartoonish way...never had a beer bath...never had his opponent`s work soft with him...but made the matche`s look and feel as real as any sporting event. He was made an example of during the peak of the wrestling boom of the late 90`s.But when you watch him work you are seeing the very best pro wrestling had to offer.LONG LIVE THE HITMAN.you people need to open your eyes to the fact that 95 percent of wrestling programming is absolute crap,There`s only a handful of talent that leaves a true legacy(not by talking and selling merchandise but the in-ring work. Thanks Bret for every stupid little bump. You are number 1 don`t ever doubt it.

C'mon, people, lighten up. This is all about entertainment, remember? It's not as if we're talking about anything real, like, maybe, pro football or anything. Geez, settle down.
