Hulk Hogan Discusses Improvising in the Ring
Posted by George H. Sirois on 01.28.2012

- During a recent interview with BBC, Hulk Hogan discussed improvising in the ring and his belief that overly choreographed matches look horrible.

"The whole thing is improv. I've seen some of the young guys try to choreograph stuff, and it sucks; it looks horrible. It's the wrestlers that go out there and actually plan stuff and when it sucks, they just keep doing it, and it makes it even worse."

You should really have more than 3 moves at your disposal if you are improvising matches

Note to Evan Bourne. Your schtick is totally asinine. Who bases their strategy on flipping around like an unqualified, contrived ballerina?

Improvising in the ring? So your telling me that you inprov in the ring Hulk? You have done the same ring moves for the last 30 plus years.

You let the guy beat you down. You "hulk" up. You point the finger, beat him down. Whip into the ropes, boot to the face, leg drop.

How is doing the same crap for 30 years improvising?

This from a guy who has pretty much wrestled the same match since 1986?

Step One: Hulk Up
Step Two: Reverse punches
Step Three: Big Boot
Step Four: Leg Drop
Step Five: Pose with little Jimmy

This coming from the man who wrestled the same 8 to 12 minute match for the last 30 years.

Whatever Brother!!!!

To be fair, I do agree that some of today's newer stars seem to have matches and move-sets that seem to require a choreography that seem to defy the flow/logic/pace of the match. possibly a result of having no more territories to expand their training/experience and Sports entertainers trying to hard to wow the audience.

And yet his match with the Warrior was almost entirely pre-planned.

One of Hogan's best matches was very choreographed by Pat Patterson - Hogan's match with Warrior. The only reason that these two non-technicians could have a good match together was Patterson.

No one did it as great as the Hulkster.

He is absolutely correct. BTW, he did mention "overly" choreographed matches.

Quit bitching about this point, even if his WM6 match with Warrior WAS completely planned out, it certainly did not look like shit.

You people are missing his point...

Can't believe people compare Cena to this guy, Cena is 1000000 times infinity the performer Hogan was, plus Cena doesn't embarrass himself on a daily basis

And yet Savage-Steamboat is generally considered one of the greatest matches in wrestling history.

But I get what he's saying. You can't go out there with a rigid game plan so that you get screwed up when something goes on. You've gotta know how to wing it. Having some pre-planned spots is not the same as overly choreographed.

Listen, brother, when I hit the atomic leg drop, it's because the audience wants it, not me. I never do anything for the Hulkster.

lol as if anyone on these boards actually wrestles..stfu.Wasnt Savage a choreagrapher as well? Most his matches were good if not at least entertaining,so to each his own.It works for some apparently..

lol Hogan does know how to wrestle..look at his Japan stuff. He just knows it pays more and its healtheir at the end of the day to work the crowd most of the match then to bust your ass.

Hogan did change his style some when he went heel with the NWO. He focused more on the back rake and whipping guys with his belt. Really, I haven't had any use for the guy for almost twenty years, but he did know how to work the crowd, and tell a story in the ring. That's really how he got to be Hulk Hogan. It certainly wasn't his technical skills. I do think you have to listen a little to a guy with his success, although I agree with posters who pointed out that some guys did very well laying out their matches before hand. Different strokes for different folks, as long as it looks spontaneous it's ok.
