Why WWE Went With Sheamus As Royal Rumble Winner
Posted by Ashish on 01.30.2012
It was initially supposed to be Chris Jericho...
WWE decided to have Sheamus win the Royal Rumble last week even though the initial plan was to have Chris Jericho win it. The reason to go with Sheamus was to try and surprise fans that were expecting Jericho to win, with Michael Cole's line about which title Sheamus would go after being designed to lead fans to believe a big shake-up just happened.
WWE has planned to give Sheamus a big push for awhile now as they are happy with how he presents himself and feel that he has grown as a performer since his debut.
It's interesting to note that if Daniel Bryan vs. Sheamus ends up happening at WrestleMania, it'll be a year after their match for the U.S. Title at WrestleMania 27 was pulled from the PPV and turned into a dark match for time reasons.
meh, you had enough believing Orton was winning it to still go with Jericho...now we're all but certain jericho's facing somebody for the championship at wrestlemania.
Sheamus deserves it though. I'm not gonna cry.

I don't know if it was as much of a surprise as it could go either way. Both Sheamus or Jericho winning would make complete sense, so it was great that they put them together at the end.
If they had Jericho winning originally, then that is definitely proof that it'll still be Punk vs Jericho at Mania.

This is what drives me nuts about the 'E: Sometimes doing what we expect is OKAY. They still could give Sheamus a rocket push and have Jericho win the rumble (preferably in the way that was kicked around the IWC for a few weeks; the last two guys in the ring eliminate each other before #30 gets to the ring, making #30 the automatic winner, who is of course Chris Jericho). Instead, what they did last night was take all the momentum out of Jericho's wonderfully bizarre return and make him just another body in the match.
WWE did the exact same thing a few years ago, swapping out Christian with Matt Hardy to screw Jeff in his title match. And didn't that decision set the world on fire?
(Rumors that Matt and Jeff set their meth labs on fire are unsubstantiated).

I may have said a lot of bad stuff about the WWE and they still arent my favorite, I have to give them a due. Rumble wasnt a bad show and I like that they went with Sheamus, because it shows the internet assclowns up. Sheamus and Daniel Bryan would actually be a great matchup to see, and will look great for Mania. Cant wait!

I love WWE's "time reasons". That show had like two hours of filler. If they used time well Bryan and Sheamus could have had a twenty minute match last year.

It'll give Sheamus and Bryan a little bit of redemption due to getting bumped off the card last year after Dwayne's 20 minute stale promo.

calling it now. Sheamus forgoes the title shot. Goes over the streak and ends it. Solidifies him as a legit star and will happen since he and Triple H are buddies. Sheamus going after Punk or Bryan kinda seems hypocritical at this point since those guys are MUCH smaller than he is and he is the main one in this anti-bully thing they are doing. Just my thoughts.

Jericho has never been one of Vince's guys. They would have never changed the plans if it was supposed to be Cena, Orton, HHH, etc.
Posted By: Guest#3422 (Guest) on January 30, 2012 at 02:03 PM
Besides Rock Vs. Cena...the title main event is gonna be Punk vs. Jericho....trust me the World Title match will end up being a 3-way with Sheamus and two others....the E wont go with Sheamus vs. Bryan one on one for the title!!!

Lobsterhead FTW!
Posted By: DoubleW (Guest) on January 30, 2012 at 02:08 PM
The Sheamus win would have felt like a much bigger deal if HHH - sorry, WWE - hadn't have rushed the belt onto him on a fluke before he was even remotely over in late '09, only for HHH to be made to look a class above Sheamus in their Wrestlemania match. It's taken him a couple of years, a KotR win and a Rumble win but he's finally recovered. Good for him.
Also, I'm looking forward to cocky-heel Bryan vs monster-face Sheamus at 'Mania; with this alignment it should be a much better match than their one over the US title would have been last year anyway.

What? I was going to win? Well fuck this, I'm going back to doing metal show tours in Denmark.

If Rock hadn't talked 25 minutes about nothing using the same old catchphrases he always has maybe Bryan/Sheamus would have made the show

it was probably jerichos idea, we are all talking about jericho despite him losing.
Posted By: Guest#0022 (Guest) on January 30, 2012 at 02:53 PM
It's funny when WWE changes plans because "too many people expect it". Well, maybe if their pathetic writers/bookers weren't so predictable, more people wouldn't be able to guess it?
I have no problem with Sheamus winning the RR. But he was already going places and with both Show and Henry having nagging injuries, he probably would have been slated for a title shot at WM28 anyway.
I hope it is Sheamus and Bryan this year for the WHC. I don't want to see Sheamus/Orton just quite yet (seeing how their last feud was pretty boring).

Not that I mind Sheamus winning but WWE should give this "working the internet" business a rest. I mean I thought Sheamus winning was no suprise at all, he was my pick to win it actually.

Agree. I think it would be awesome if Jericho just tried to get out of WWE before Wrestlemania-yes it would be childish-but I rather see that. It would be more Punk like and then the pressure would really be on Sheamus to perform. Win, win situation in my opinion since I consider Wrestlemania messed up already. Don't care if I am being picky here-it's a $50 show! Lets just hope I am wrong, right?

really? you really think that jericho's momentum has been stalled? just because he lost the rumble after bring in the final 2? he had to win the rumble in order for his momentum to keep going? what a ridiculous comment. jericho's momentum is only getting started. wait til raw tonight. rumble or no rumble it'll be jericho vs punk at wm. and that sure is no indication of any momentum loss.
i hate it that they have to explain why sheamus won the rumble. he won! move on! no explanation neessary. i'm looking forward to the road to wrestlemania, seeing both the punk-jericho and sheamus-bryan feuds develop.
well done, wwe.

I'm kind of on track with this guy. I'd love to see Sheamus declare that, after careful consideration, he wants to use his Rumble win as evidence that he deserves a chance to challenge The Streak at Mania. Especially if he uses the logic that Triple H put Taker out for a year, while just the year before Sheamus put Triple H out for most of a year. Taker could consider him enough of a threat to accept the challenge, and a brutal star-making bout is signed. Maybe Sheamus loses, but outdoes Triple H's damage enough to put Taker out until WM 30, where he'll return for his 21st and final fight, probably against Cena.
This leaves Jericho open to reveal that his "world as you know it will end" plan was to win the Rumble and challenge BOTH champs to a unification match at Mania, citing Punk and Bryan's declarations of being "the best in the world" as the fuel for his fire.
Anyone else have thoughts on this?
Posted By: Guest#5380 (Guest) on January 30, 2012 at 03:25 PM

they were bumped off the wm card because of triple h and undertaker long entrances not because of the rock's promo, which was so stale that he had the entire crowd in is palm something that bryan and boring white can never do.

My Wrestlemania Prediction Card:
Rock vs Cena
Punk vs Jericho
Bryan vs Sheamus
Orton vs Barrett
Zack Ryder vs Kane/Jack Swagger

Triple H campaigned against Jericho winning the Rumble, wanting Sheamus to win instead. He got his way.

i predicted sheamus was going to win it a long time ago.
i say barrett wins the wht at elimination chamber. only to get brogue kicked in the head, recover then get an rko. setting up rko vs barrett vs shaemus.
Posted By: rey (Guest) on January 30, 2012 at 04:11 PM
I find it hard to believe they did it just to "surprise" the fans, since by using that same logic they could have had Primo win. BTW, Sheamus seems like a nice guy but I just find him extremely boring

Excellent decision by the WWE! One of the coolest finishes to a Rumble I ever saw. Now we can have Chris Jericho vs Undertaker, Sheamus vs Daniel Bryan for the WHC at Wrestlemania 28! Alberto Del rio will be back in time to take the title from CM Punk at Mania too.
Posted By: beerslayer (Guest) on January 30, 2012 at 05:08 PM
Jericho storyline makes sense, or it could, at least. The WWE wants us to wonder who Laurinaitis keeps texting all night long. Whoever he's texting is sending Jericho to take out Punk. Maybe it's Stephanie, who knows.
Posted By: Stanley (Guest) on January 30, 2012 at 05:12 PM
Everytime the IWC gets something wrong they say Vince changed it at the last minute because too many people were expecting it. How come no one ever calls bs on this? Yeah, I'm sure a company that scripts everything to a fault changed their plans for the road to Wrestlemania to screw with some internet fans.
Posted By: gpjunk (Guest) on January 30, 2012 at 05:20 PM
Assuming Jericho v Punk is a lock, they can still easily go Bryan v Sheamus v Orton (v Barrett) for the other strap...

Thought-When the WWE changes storylines because they have been predicted on the internet-does not necessarily mean they just do it for the surprise factor. To go with an idea proposes admittance on the part of the writer's that they are not so creative and not as necessary as we think. So of course they will change the storylines-to protect themselves as a psychological bias. A little sub-conscious motivation.

Cena will win the WWE title at Elimination Chamber to defend against The Rock at WM28. Sheamus will face Bryan for the World title.

This is not only good, but it makes sense...therefore, I won't be expecting to see it in a WWE storyline anytime soon. You guys can have fun with your magical fantasyland booking. I'll be looking forward to Cena vs. Rock for the title, Sheamus vs. Henry vs. Big Show for the other title, Undertaker vs. Kane part 84, a hellacious feud between Punk and the legendary Jack Swagger, and Daniel Bryan jobbing to Hornswoggle in the dark match. Jeriwho? We'll just have HHH bury him.
Posted By: Pwnage (Guest) on January 30, 2012 at 05:46 PM
I think a Bryan/Sheamus feud could be great as long as they don't book Sheamus as some kind of monster who Daniel Bryan couldn't possibly beat without cheating. Let the guys wrestle a little. Don't need all the nonsense that went on in the Bryan/Show/Henry storyline.
Posted By: Guest#3288 (Guest) on January 30, 2012 at 05:49 PM
"Many people expected Jericho to win". And so were Randy Orton (2009), Edge (2010) and Del Rio (2011) expected to win the respective Royal Rumbles and they ended up winning them. Why didn't WWE bother to change those?
Sheamus only won this match because he blows Tripe H's cock in the gym. Jericho's momentum is killed as of now but they'll find a way for him to challenge Punk at Mania anyways.
And I can already see Sheamus vs the World Heavyweight Champion opening WM 28 (like Del Rio did last year) as Sheamus has no main event credibility and can't draw shit.
Posted By: Jesse (Guest) on January 30, 2012 at 05:58 PM
I'm happy with it. I've been a Sheamus fan since the morrison series in 2010. He works especially good with small guys like Danielson. That was the Mania 27 match I most wanted to see.
So Jericho should win the Raw Chamber to get a shot @ Punk for Mania.
Mania 28 is shaping up to give Mania X7 a run for its money as the best ever.
Posted By: sp1 (Guest) on January 30, 2012 at 06:31 PM
Jericho losing is consistent with his storyline, guys. He said that the world would end on January 2, and it never happened. He said he'd speak last week and he just repeated himself. Now, granted, Jericho didn't choose to lose last night, but obviously he's just messing with us anyway. It will likely be easier for him to into the feud as something other than the Rumble winner anyway since he's playing heel.
Posted By: Guest#3197 (Guest) on January 30, 2012 at 07:28 PM
Oh, so they wanted to throw a curve ball at us and have Sheamus win the Rumble instead of Jericho. I strongly disagree with this decision, but at the same time I must reluctantly accept it, because we're still getting Punk versus Jericho at Wrestlemania 28.
Posted By: TK03000 (Guest) on January 30, 2012 at 07:43 PM
Jericho winning via nothing was probably the plan all along, but too many people guessed it so they went with the less expected Sheamus win. Which is the 3rd most predictable option after Orton wins just because or Jericho wins because it's logical.
Posted By: Guest#3150 (Guest) on January 30, 2012 at 07:51 PM
A Sheamus Royal Rumble win makes sense because he's SUPER OVER now and not so green in the ring anymore. Also, the ONLY way Sheamus really makes sense in a WrestleMania title program is with a Rumble win. Jericho can always get his match with CM Punk through other means and Orton could sneak in to the title picture by winning the belt from Daniel Bryan. I expect we'll either get Sheamus VS Bryan or Sheamus VS Orton VS Bryan at Mania, as well as CM Punk VS Y2J. Unlike last year, should be AWESOME.
