WWE News: Santino Being Praised, Punk/Jericho, Phoenix Gets Positive Feedback, More
Posted by Larry Csonka on 02.20.2012
More news on a busy morning…
- WWE.com has an interview up with CM Punk, discussing what went down at last night's PPV, and the fact that Chris Jericho will want a title match. You can watch that video here.
- Santino received praise backstage following his effort in the Elimination Chamber.
- Sunday's Elimination Chamber PPV was the first one since the PPV debuted at 2009 where neither the World or WWE Title changed hands.
- Both Tamina Snuka and Beth Phoenix reportedly received positive feedback following their match last night.
- Some of the terms trending last night during the PPV were: John Cena, CM Punk, Alberto Del Rio, Kane, The Great Khali, Teddy Long, Mark Henry, and Kofi Kingston.
Say want you want about Santino, but the guy has done whatever stupid thing the company has asked, and done his best to be funny and entertaining.
It would be great to see him keep the character, but turn a little more serious. This guy deserves at least a small push for all his hard work the last several years.

I didn't care so much for the smackdown chamber but Santino vs. Bryan as the last two guys was a great highlight that worked better and got the crowd louder than I would have expected.

The Smackdown Chamber was so much better than it had any right being given that some of the top Smackdown talent is injured. Santino and Wade Barrett really busted their asses last night. Santino got the loudest reaction of the night, and I think the WWE should take notice that you can book someone as a comedy character for years and if they connect with the fans, they will still accept them as a World Champion in this day and age. Santino might not be the greatest worker of all time, and I'm not claiming he's World title material, but the crowd would have erupted had he pulled that off last night. And isn't that what wrestling is all about in the long run?

I was at the Smackdown that set up Santino in there and the crowd reaction you heard on tv was NOTHING compared to what it was live. The guy is HUGELY over which had me cracking up at the "writers" on this site bashing him being in there.

If they could have changed to call on the fly, I have to think they would have given Santino the belt for 6 weeks.

Santino Marella did a hell of a job last night in the elimination chamber.

Just like when he made it to the last two in the Royal Rumble, Santino shows that he's over as anyone if booked in the underdog role. Give that man a post-Mania push!

When Triple H and the Taker talk about the end of an era, they mean it. Not sure if you realized but last night's card relied heavily on the new class of talent that came through the ranks of both the FCW and NXT over the last few years. I think the show was pretty solid.
I was upset Santino didn't win. He has done everything asked of him and he's an amazing talent. I think this will push his start further. It wasn't until the Socko with McMahon at the hospital that the crowd embraced Foley as a serious contender. This lead to him winning the title. Face it, throughout the history of the business, lesser men have won the title and I think Santino winning would be great!

The PPV was No Way Out in 2009...

Good for Santino. He's been booked in some crap over the years so nice to see him getting a break.

HHH won the World Title at 2009s event...

Credit to Daniel Bryan as well, for doing the smile & hand point to Santino to indicate Santino is no threat. It's little things like that that help get Santino over as the underdog.

BTW, Beth vs. Tamina was a *horrible* match! Did I miss something? Praise?!?

Phoenix/Tamina was awful and the crowd didn't react at all until the last minute of the match. Hardly worth praising. Hope Kharma kills Beth.

Neither World Title changed hands last year either. Short term memory?

They saddled Mark Henry with awful gimmicks and storylines for a decade before they final figured out how to use him, and he was never as over as Santino is right now. I hope they work him into the title mix somehow.
Santino = butts in seats

It states that the WWE and World titles were retained in the dual Elimination Chambers matches held in the same night for the first time. In 2009, Triple H won the WWE Title and Edge won the World title. In 2010, Cena won the WWE title and Jericho won the World title.
Last year, Edge retained the World title in the SmackDown EC match but the WWE title was not contested in an Elimination Chamber on that PPV (It was The Miz vs Jerry Lawler). Instead the RAW EC was a no.1 contenders match for the WWE title at WM 27.

And The Miz was yelled at.
