Funaki Discusses Teaming With Taka Michinoku, Getting His WWE Job and More

January 17, 2013 | Posted by Larry Csonka

– WWE.com recently did a “where are they now?” with former WWE performer Funaki. Here are the highlights from the interview…

On starting a team with Taka in Japan: “Taka’s style was based around high-flying, but mine was very traditional mat wrestling. There was a little confusion at first, but our timing was good. It took a little while, but it eventually came together.”

How he got into WWE: “Taka asked them if they were interested in any more Japanese wrestlers. They said a few more would be good, so he called me and asked me if I wanted to come to WWE. My dream, since I was a kid, was to wrestle in America; it was easier than I thought it would be. I got a phone call from Taka and my dream came true.”

On who pitched the ‘Kung Fu Naki’ character to him: “It was Hurricane’s idea. He said he needed a partner, like Batman needed Robin. He said he needed Kung Fu Naki.”
