Michael Cole on Getting His Start In Radio, Whether He Would Go Back to Reporting, More

January 17, 2013 | Posted by Jeremy Thomas

– Houston Chronicle reporter David Harron has released a never-published 2011 interview with Michael Cole discussing Cole’s start in broadcasting on Houston radio and more. Check out the highlights:

On starting off on the radio: “Radio was my first love. That is what I was taught. I called football and basketball games in college and worked in news in college. Not having the visual medium to describe things, to be able to write without having pictures to tell the story, that’s what I loved about it…I loved the anonymity.”

On his boss at the radio station: “He really allowed us to open the envelope on a lot of areas. It was before the heyday of the Internet and news websites. We had the big, boxy cellphones and would drive around covering so many things from the Waco story (the Branch Davidians standoff) or the Oklahoma City bombing to things like floods and thunderstorms.”

On missing reporting fro mtime to time: “I covered things that shaped the early-to-mid-1990s. When I watch Anderson Cooper go around the world it gets the blood flowing again. But, with that said, there’s no place in the world other than the WWE where you can be on television 52 weeks a year and travel the world. This has been a wonderful career move, and if I had it all to do over, I would do it again. This has been a wonderful place to work.”
