A live report from the event!
PWG's All Star Weekend 5 is taking place this week. The following is a recap of the matches, in order, which took place and a preview of Sunday's show:
Disco Machine Defeats NOSAWA
Opening match saw Disco defeat NOSAWA in a part comedy/part pure wrestling match. Finish came when Disco hit NOSAWA with his Chokebreaker (chokeslam into a backbreaker).
Rocky "Azucar" Romero Defeats Roderick Strong
MOTN candidate as current "No Remorse Corps" teammates in RoH took each other to the limit with one of the most brutal and hard hitting matches in 2007. Strong's chops vs Romero's stiff kicks was the big story in this match as Strong also worked Romero's back to set up his "Strong Hold" while Rocky worked on Strong's arm and shoulder for an cross arm bar submission. The end of the match came when Rocky took Strong off the top rope with a flying armbar submission which he cinched in for the submission victory.
Kikutaro Defeats Matt Classic
Although Colt Cabana was schedule to wrestle the former Ebessan turned Kikutaro, a suitable replacement in Matt Classic was found. A great comedy match as you would expect ended when after bullying by Classic the referee pushed him into a kneeling Kikutaro for a quick pinfall which seemed a little TOO quick.
Human Tornado w/ Candice LaRae Defeats "Double C" Claudio Castagnoli
Human Tornado completed his heel turn as he took on Claudio Castagnoli in a decent match. Cheating by Tornado and stiff European uppercuts by Claudio was the basis of the match. The end came from a bump from Claudio into LaRae gave Tornado a roll up while holding the tights.
"Mr. Wrestling" Kevin Steen defeats Jack Evans
Good match from these two as they recently worked some Dragon Gate matches against each other over the summer. Basic match saw Evans being tossed around by Steen while coming back with various aerial moves and kicks. The finish came when Evans was planted with a Package Piledriver and followed up with a "Steenalizer" (trapped reverse full nelson suplex into the corner turnbuckle) for the pinfall.
The Dynasty vs. PWG 8-Man Tag Team Match
Joey Ryan, "The Professional" Scott Lost, "Photogenic" Chris Bosh & Karl "Machine Gun" Anderson Defeats "The Future" Frankie Kazarian, TJ Perkins, Ronin, & Top Gun Talwar
Decent filler match which featured all of the local PWG talent. Basically a bit of a mess until the "go home" which resulted in a cavalcade of finishers and finally ended with a double team northern lights suplex/Back breaker from Lost and Bosh on Top Gun Talwar for the pinfall.
PWG Debut Match
Kaz Hayashi Defeats Alex Shelley
Great "Puro" style match with both men working on specific body parts on their opponents as well as displaying a lot of "Fighting Spirit", i.e. selective selling. Story of the match was based on Shelley citing Hayashi as one of his inspirations early in his career. A great match as Kaz picked up the win with a "Final Cut".
PWG Debut Match
Low Ki Defeats Davey Richards
As stiff as it sounded. Match consisted of the stiffest kicks and chops you'll see on the Indy scene. The end of the match came when Low Ki hit a double stomp off the top rope to Davey as he was in the tree of woe. Another MOTN candidate.
PWG World Championship Title Match
El Generico (c) Defeats "The Man That Gravity Forgot" PAC
Great match and MOTN candidate that saw many false finishes. Scary spot when Pac attempted a double tuck moonsault from the top rope and missed while landing on his neck. He was down for several moments and the crowd thought he was legitimately hurt until he kicked out of what looked like a token pin attempt to end the match. Match continued for 5 minutes after. El Generico wins after a half nelson suplex onto the ring apron.
Night Two of PWG's All Star Weekend 5 takes place on Sunday, April 8, 2007 at 5:00 pm and features: El Generico (c), Human Tornado, Kaz Hayashi, "The Man Gravity Forgot" PAC, Chris Hero, Davey Richards, Claudio Castognoli, Alex Shelley, Roderick Strong, Jack Evans, Colt Cabana, Kikutaro, NOSAWA, Rocky Romero, and the much anticipated Low Ki vs Samoa Joe match.
