Lots of news coming from the Kurt Angle DUI arrest, Angle's attorney speaks and the AP picks up the story!
- Kurt Angle cancelled his appearance on Between The Ropes last night in the fallout from his DUI arrest going public.
- Angle was caught for the DUI after nearly hitting a woman driver while driving his white Escalade. She quickly wrote down the license plate number and phoned the authorities. The authorities went to the Angle home, after linking the license number to him, and questioned him about the incident. They then performed several field sobriety tests, which Angle failed and he was placed under arrest. According to authorities, Angle had "liquor on his breath" and had "pills in his mouth" when officers were interviewing him. The pills were apparently anti-inflammatory meds. Angle was taken to Sewickley Valley Hospital for blood testing, which he refused and by law will result in an automatic one-year suspension of his driver's license.
- Kurt Angle's attorney has released the following statement on the matter: "Kurt Angle maintains his innocence relative to the charges brought by the police in this matter. The improper arrest occurred in the middle of the afternoon after Mr. Angle showed no signs of intoxication. The police have no blood alcohol content and not firsthand knowledge of his operation of his vehicle. We believe the motivation for this arrest is based upon Kurt Angle's celebrity status and we are confident that we will prevail when the truth becomes evident."
- The Associated Press has also picked up the story as follows:
Pro Wrestler Kurt Angle Charged With DUI
CORAOPOLIS, Pa. — Pro wrestler Kurt Angle was charged with drunken driving and careless driving when he drove home from a bar near his home in the Pittsburgh suburbs last week, police said.
Angle was charged Friday after a motorist called police in Moon Township about 2 p.m. to report a Cadillac Escalade was driving erratically, according to a police news release.
Police used the license number to determine the vehicle belonged to Angle and went to his home, where police said the wrestler acknowledged driving home from a bar.
Angle appeared to be intoxicated and failed a field sobriety test before refusing a blood test, police said.
Angle, 38, won a gold medal in the 1996 Summer Olympics before becoming a local television sportscaster and then a pro wrestler.
It was not immediately clear if Angle had an attorney. His home telephone number was unlisted.
