More Tuesday news!
- TMZ has picked up the story of Lindsay Lohan being backstage at RAW last night.
- The March 2008 issue of WWE Magazine will feature four different WrestleMania-themed covers.
- Role Playing Game developer White Wolf is suing WWE over the use of the name "Gangrel." White Wolf uses the name in its game, Vampire: The Masquerade. In 1998, WWE signed a five year deal with White Wolf to use the name for the character played by David Heath. That deal expired in 2003 and WWE did not renew it. But in December of 2007, WWE used the Gangrel character at their 15th Anniversary RAW show. Hollywood Reporter's item on the story is up here.
- WWE sent out the following release today.
World Wrestling Entertainment® Announces Plan for 50% Dividend Increase for Class A Shareholders
STAMFORD, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc. (NYSE:WWE) announced today that, subject to the receipt of a favorable tax ruling from the Internal Revenue Service, it anticipates increasing its regular quarterly cash dividend on Class A common stock to $0.36 per share. The Class B holders would agree to waive this increase for three years and instead continue to receive the current $0.24 per share quarterly cash dividend. The new Class A dividend would represent an 8.6% yield based on our most recent closing stock price. The Class A common stock is held by the Company's public stockholders, and the Class B common stock is held by members of the McMahon family and their trusts.
A favorable tax ruling would permit the holders of the Class B common stock to waive the increase in dividends for a period of three years without adverse tax consequences to them. If the requested ruling is received by the Company prior to March 4, 2008, the Company could declare the increased dividend on its normal quarterly cycle, which would mean a record date of March 14, 2008 and a payment date of March 25, 2008. While the Company believes that it will receive the ruling, no assurance can be given in this regard. If the ruling is not received by March 4, 2008, the Board expects that the increase would be included in the June dividend, assuming receipt of a favorable ruling by then.
Commenting on this announcement, Vincent K. McMahon, Chairman of the Board of Directors, said: "The plan for a dividend increase underscores our commitment to the Company's public shareholders. The decision was supported by WWE's strong financial performance and demonstrates our confidence in the Company's future. We believe that we can continue to pursue our long-term growth initiatives while at the same time providing a very generous dividend, which should keep us on the right path toward building value for our shareholders."
World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc. (NYSE: WWE) is an integrated media and entertainment company headquartered in Stamford, Conn., with offices in New York City, Los Angeles, Toronto and London. Additional information on the company can be found at wwe.com and corporate.wwe.com.
I'm sure that the wrestler Gangrel was confusing to anyone interested in role playing games.

I bet you that more people know about Gangrel the wrestler than Gangrel the Vampire Clan.

That may be true, but of all the names out there, the WWE had to pick one that is used in a vampire roleplaying game for a vampire wrestler? Seems to me they should be sued just for being stupid.

Just be glad they didn't make him a Count Dracula or Lestat clone.

Seriously White Wolf? Seriously? Do they have nothing better to do? Seriously?

Well well well White Wolf... is the RPG gone that shallow that you feel a need to sue the WWE to cover your loses? I feel that maybe you should be happy that WWE even agreed to use the name and bring publicity to your game.

I always wondered about the Gangrel thing. It is a pretty blatant copyright issue. I mean vampire clan and vampire themed wrestler. Yet the guy himself was alright and should really have had more success then he did. Seems a case of holding on to your gimmick too long if you ask me. It's no wonder he's working shows in the UK when any company that wants him on TV has to pay White Wolf. Lol.
Still good for me. I get to see him live for virtually nothing. Sad to think he used to head up a stable with Edge and Christian as his lackeys. Lol.

WWE are pretty quick to sue people for using names they have copyright for (and often try to use bullyboy tactics against people too - eg; youtube, former wrestler etc). Really happy to see them getting a taste of their own medicine.

White Wolf are in the position where they have to sue copyright infringement that doesn't overlap - if they don't, legally they can't chase copyright infringement that does overlap, and that means anyone can use their ideas in other games and make money off their work.
White Wolf do this to cover their backs legally, guys. The fact you're not aware of this doesn't change that - they sued Sony when Underworld ripped off an actual White Wolf story. Can a paper and pencil game company ever beat Sony even when they're in the right?
No. But if they try they can sue when people they actually can win against mess around.
Same thing here.

The wrestler who portrayed Gangrel, played the white wolf roleplaying game and took the name. He was or still is married to Luna Vachon and they took their Vampire/Freakshow thing really seriously.

They are divorced. I didn't hear anything about it, but I know he is off to Las Vegas later in the year to marry his new girlfriend who is apparently a hot model. Not seen her though.
But yeah, he is a big time fan of Vampire: The Masquerade. A lot of people are, but they are mostly nerdy goth computer programmer types. Instead of nerdy goth wrestler types. :)
