Jim Ross Speaks On Ric Flair, The Draft, Lance Cade, UFC, More
Posted by Ashish on 06.18.2008

Jim Ross has a new blog entry up. Highlights are below.

On Ric Flair: I read on the ‘net where someone was wondering why Ric Flair was sweating so profusely Monday night. A..it was 90 degrees in SLC Monday (Naitch wasn't the only one sweating wearing a suit) and the arena was hotter than hell and B…Flair is a habitual sweater from way back. Remember those old Crockett and TBS days? Nonetheless "Naitch" looked to be in really great physical condition and continues to work out diligently. He indicated to me that he was on the road 19 days last month, which is a busy month of travel, but that he usually gets to be home on the weekends. Ric loves his "Ambassador" role as Ric does exceptionally well at private functions where he can converse with corporate types. There are no plans for Ric to wrestle again but I liked seeing him on Raw even though one can argue that by promoting his appearance that it might have helped increase interest in the broadcast. Hindsight is usually 20/20 and reasonable arguments can be certainly made that the return of the legendary Flair could have been handled with more fanfare and impact.

On the Draft: There are seemingly endless questions regarding the format of this Monday's tri-branded, WWE Draft. What brand drafts first….will this be a random lottery drawing….what happens if a champion IE Matt Hardy who is the reigning United States Championship which appears to be a Smackdown title is drafted to Raw? Does the wrestler leave the title behind or does the title come to a new brand? I know that these types of things have occurred in the past but is there a hard, fast rule on matters such as this here in 2008? Will there be trades as there has been before? Who will represent Raw which has no General Manager?

On Lance Cade: Regarding the conclusion of Raw Monday night, lots of folks are wondering, why Lance Cade? Why did Cade insert himself in the main event mix near the end of Raw? I suggest, why not? The only way new wrestlers are going to rise to the next level is for them to step in the deep in of the pool and either sink or swim. Any TV presentation can always been over analyzed and sometimes certainly for the better but I like the fact that, philosophically, someone new is getting a chance to perform with the big boys. The key to this matter will be the follow up come Monday night. Hearing from a passionate Cade would be a nice start. Bottom line here is this…no wrestling promotion has any bigger or more important challenge than developing tomorrow's main event stars. For example, who will headline the next Wrestlemania is always a viable question. Not just in 2009 but the year after than and so forth. Long term planning is crucial to the success of any business including a wrestling business.

On UFC: Is it just me or does any one else think that the UFC pays WAY too much attention to the fledgling MMA groups out there? The UFC is the NFL of MMA but there will always be a place for the small "Arena Football League" groups that will only serve as a feeder system to the UFC from where I sit.

I think JR means "e.g. Matt Hardy..."

I would like to point out that if it wasn't for hulk hogan...jim ross wouldn't be here.

Well, I guess Cade is not going to be the Wildcat's partner. The decision was made to bring in Chris Harris as a tag team member rather than a solo act. It was being debated about who he would be paired with. Both Cade and Murdoch were two of the options, going for a WWEized AMW, one of the factors behind their recent split. The other leading choice is Dibiase Jr.

I understand Pushing Cade as he fits Vince's champion mold, but he looks so generic and undistinguishable now. he looks like any random "I'm young and have something to prove" jobber out there now. Anyway JR is right abou the UFC, why rush a July 19th show to counter an Affliction ppv that only the really hardcore fans are gonna buy (and many will just pirate)? Free mma is always good for me, but from a business standpoint I don't know why theyre concerned

They could finally go ahead and use the fact that Cade was trained by Shawn (or at least his school) maybe with Cade being bitter about how Shawn has never done anything for him since he's been back. Then Kendrick and London could get involved followed by WWE signing and using Bryan Danielson. One storyline could give at least five or six guys something to do and potentially be a means do debut someone new on Raw.

"Who will represent Raw which has no General Manager?"

New RAW GM hint?

Posted By: BFG08 (Guest)  on June 18, 2008 at 01:53 PM

Then again, it's such an easy storyline to do and do well that WWE wouldn't do and if they did the writers would probably screw it up.

JR could probably run WWE very well. He really knows how the buisness works and has a lot of common sense.

Did JR forget that guy who was the ECW chamnp when he got drafted last year. I know he left the company, but when Lashley was drafted to RAW, the ECW championship stayed with ECW. If Hardy goes to Raw, the US title stays there. That is just what they need on Raw, 2 midcard titles that are never defended.

I would like to point that Joe Mastronardo has a bald, orange dick up his ass.

That will never make it past the editors, but SERIOUSLY...why are we talking about Hogan?

Hopefully the E won't bury Cade again for the 3rd of 4th time. Him and Murdoch deserve better than to be HHH and HBK's personal job squad.

Posted By: Guest (Guest)  on June 18, 2008 at 02:22 PM

I like that Lance Cade was inserted into the picture Monday night. He has a main event look, can work a decent match, and it adds a fresh face to the HHH-Cena-Jericho-Umaga-JBL-Orton-Hardy-HBK club.

No, he means IE... short for "In Example"...

Posted By: Mark E (Guest)  on June 18, 2008 at 02:39 PM

"Why did Cade insert himself in the main event mix near the end of Raw? I suggest, why not?"

Ummm, cuz he's been jobbed to hellandback and any value Cade and Murdoch had as WTTC's is long forgotten . . . if a jobber falls in the ring, and no one is in the arena to hear him, does he still make a sound? NO.

Posted By: McLovin (Guest)  on June 18, 2008 at 02:44 PM

i agree with ross on inserting cade into a main event program. the only talent can be elevated is through getting rubs from the big boys.

Posted By: rey (Guest)  on June 18, 2008 at 02:49 PM

Flair is 134 years old, he is going to sweat, Cade is going to be the next Val Penis, and the UFC kicks WWE's ass. Noway has spoken, you can put it to bed

Posted By: noway (Guest)  on June 18, 2008 at 02:53 PM

I was taught to use IE (for example) in school. I was told about e.g. as well but IE is more common.

Posted By: Jim Ire (Guest)  on June 18, 2008 at 02:59 PM

I agree about the UFC, all of their plans to try and defend against the Affliction PPV make them seem small time, not to mention stupid (Despite Fedor vs Sylvia, in the grand scheme of things EliteXC on CBS is a bigger threat).

It's always been WCW and TNA who would do things like this, while WWE sat safe in the knowledge their were number one and didn't even acknowledge their rivals. UFC should just be concentrating on making their own shows as good as they can be, rather then reacting like this to others.

Last I checked, didn't the championship come with Cena when he was drafted to RAW in 2005?

Posted By: Peter (Guest)  on June 18, 2008 at 03:22 PM

hmm... "i.e. Matt Hardy" would mean he was more or less specifically meaning Matt Hardy while the e.g. would be using Hardy as an example. Though i think this is JR being grammatically incorrect and not some sort of "hint"

"I would like to point out that if it wasn't for hulk hogan...jim ross

Funny, I would have thought it was Jim Ross's parents more than Hogan. I mean, the guy is everywhere, but C'MON!

Hey, it did get past the editors! Big floppy donkey dick!

I guess if I don't say anything bad about 411 or anything good about other wrestling sites, it's OK.

about titles and the Draft...

I think the The ECW championship stayed with ECW for a few possible reasons, first ECW title is the only title that actually has a name connection to the particular show, which they were trying to pass off as a rebirth of the origional promotion. Unlike the WWE title and World Heavyweight titles, it was obviously not meant to be a belt on RAW.

2. Lashley had just finished up a high profile fued with Mr McMahon and the Raw GM/McMahon's #1 flunky wanted to get in the last laugh by stripping Lashley of the title.

That's not the first time JR's used an ie when it should be an eg. He actually doesn't know the difference. His grasp of English isn't the great which is why I always said he's not that great a commentator despite his passion. Not that I'm dissing him, he's still good and knows the wrestling business well. Just for supposedly the best commentator of all time he doesn't really cut the mustard with his skills with the English language. I will never for get his "he's literally on fire line" (it wasn't an inferno match or anything, no one was literally on fire).

Anyway, I'm surprised JR didn't bring up the training of Cade, that suggests that the WWE isn't using that as an angle, which seems to be a missed chance.

I could care less about where Wrestling is now, I was a fan far before Hogan, in fact, one of my childhood idols was someone who the Hulkster stole his image from, SUPERSTAR BILLY GRAHAM

"Who will represent Raw which has no General Manager?"

WRESTLING FANS WILL POOP THEMSELVES IN PURE SHOCK WHEN IT IS REVEALED THAT VINCE MCCMAHON WILL REPRESENT RAW

@Mark E, et al.:

"I.e." is short for "id est", which means "that is (to say)". "E.g." is short for "exempli gratia" --- "for example." It looks like JR was going for "for example", in which case he should have used "e.g.".

You know it's the Internet when a wrestling discussion devolves into an argument about grammar.

(And "et al." is short for "et alii" --- "and others".)

Is it ie or eg?

I have to know this.

Posted By: Ted (Guest)  on June 19, 2008 at 10:15 AM

from legal explanation.com:

'prep. Abbreviation for id est. Latin meaning "that is," or "that is to say." Used to explain or expand a general term and should not be confused with "e.g." which refers to "for example."'
