More WWE News: CM Punk Drawing Ratings, WWE Happy with ECW Rating, Regal's Return, More
Posted by Ashish on 07.17.2008

- The quarter hour rating for the CM Punk vs. Kane match on RAW this past Monday was a 3.59, making it the highest rated segment of the entire show (other than the overrun which did a 3.81). The quarter hours right before and after the CM Punk match did 3.13 ratings, meaning the Punk match caused a spike of viewers.

- WWE was really happy with ECW's rating this week. They booked the Hardy Boyz reunion this week to try and avoid a drop in the ratings since the show went up against the MLB All-Star game. The plan worked, as the ECW rating actually went up this week to a 1.42.

- OneIndia.com has a biography up on the Great Khali. Check it out here.

- William Regal's Wellness Policy suspensions end this week. He could return to TV as early as the Great American Bash PPV.

- Kevin Dunn, John Laurinaitis, Ty Bailey, and John "Big" Gaburick are all in Tampa for the FCW TV taping tonight. WWE talent will also be making appearances at the taping but will not wrestle. Only the WWE developmental talent will be wrestling.

Punk as Champ=Epic win

Cool maybe this'll mean Punk will keep the belt.

But in all fairness Kane's in the middle of a storyline that's taking him back to his most marketable. I think both men are part of the reason the match was the highest rated segment, and both men should be proud of that. It was our new strangly interesting champion vs our new resident psycho with history and name recognition. This is good for Kane and Punk.

Punk is God. but maybe the Kane storyline deserves a bit of credit too.

Punk = Ratings!

Not that the apperances at FCW are a bad thing. But do we need to know EVERYTIME anyone from WWE goes there for a visit? We all know its their developmental fed so they will have officials and talent coming and going on a regular basis. We didnt hear near this much about the inner workings of OVW did we?

Posted By: CM Wolf (Guest)  on July 17, 2008 at 01:56 PM

CM Punk is actually popping the ratings? Awesome. If they book Punk properly as an underdog champion then his ppv title defences will likely draw some buys as well. Congrats to Punk on (so far) proving the naysayers wrong.

I think some Internet marks owe punk an apology...

CM Punk as Champ = Ratings

LOL, I was waiting for the quarter hour break down of Raw since so many idiots are on here saying that Punk didn't draw last week LOL...it was just the other junk that nobody cared about LOL.... Can we get a Punk heel or anti hero turn, please...

Posted By: Industry (Guest)  on July 17, 2008 at 02:51 PM

were are all the SMARKS who said Punk could not draw

Posted By: Guest#8866 (Guest)  on July 17, 2008 at 02:55 PM

yep, i agree with the poster above me.. this is the most interesting Kane has been in years, and if it turns out to be the full-face Kane mask in that little sack, well, Kane will be mega over everywhere.

Kane challenging for the World Title on RAW gets the highest ratings... Is it 1998 all over again?

Posted By: Guest#4538 (Guest)  on July 17, 2008 at 03:05 PM

people tuned in to find out who "he" is...bottom line

Posted By: yo mama (Guest)  on July 17, 2008 at 03:13 PM

I'm really hoping with Regal's suspensions ending this week, and Raw having no order, that Regal can get back the spot he had.... We shall see.

"The quarter hour rating for the CM Punk vs. Kane match on RAW this past Monday was a 3.59, making it the highest rated segment of the entire show"

Boo-yah. Hopefully that will shut the haters up. Punk is the MAN. Does this officially prove that Punk is a bigger draw than HHH? I don't remember HHH being in some of the highest rated segments when he had the belt on RAW recently.

Posted By: KEdge2k (Guest)  on July 17, 2008 at 03:49 PM

I wonder how bad this is eating at Triple H's ego.

Posted By: E. Nygma (Guest)  on July 17, 2008 at 03:57 PM

It's just a fad... Punk will not make to Summerslam with the belt... hell I'll be surprised if he makes to Raw with the belt!

"if it turns out to be the full-face Kane mask in that little sack, well, Kane will be mega over everywhere."

*Applause*

Thank you. Awesome post.

I watched it ONLY for Kane. I hate CM Flunk and I can't wait for them to get the belt away from his loser ass.

He is very boring.

Kane is awesome, though.

Could this be the beginnings of a new boom period?

Posted By: Jeremy (Guest)  on July 17, 2008 at 04:24 PM

"were are all the SMARKS who said Punk could not draw "

You're an idiot for calling yourself that. The only part of RAW that I watched was the Punk match, because of Punk. Who cares if Kane gets a mask again? It's pathetic. They'll just take it off when he gets boring again two weeks later.

Posted By: Will (Guest)  on July 17, 2008 at 04:27 PM

When Edge first won the title, Raw had the highest ratings it ever had in five years but he eventually got shit on by tapping out to Cena only 3 weeks later so don't be so positive Punk will be champion

Posted By: Brad (Guest)  on July 17, 2008 at 04:44 PM

Punk is like a combined Austin/Hogan in terms of drawing power now.

Posted By: The Moose (Guest)  on July 17, 2008 at 04:46 PM

One week where the ratings spike doesn't mean he's a bigger draw than HHH, as much as I hate to say it. It has to be consistent. I'd love to believe it was all because of Punk, but Kane became relevant again in one short week. A nice little portion of that rating probably belonged to him. If this all leads to him putting on the mask, we might be having a good future all around. Punk as champ, HHH on Smackdown!, Kane with the mask, Regal returning as GM of Raw.

I see Punk going over at the Great American Bash. Honestly a two week build without trying to get any interest in Batista just doesn't feel like enough. Usually PPV fueds have some level of build, but this just seems like an excuse to make sure the World title is defended on PPV.

But I'm a little Biased, Batista just doesn't feel like the right guy to releive Punk of the Belt, Batista's style is all about hurting people. He wrestle's like a heel basically, so usually he has to be put against bad guys to keep the crowd on his side. I've never seen Batista win a match without him basically dominating and destroying his opponant, and that kind of finish just wouldn't go over with Batista as a face taking the belt from the smaller less experienced face CM Punk.

If Batista wins the match It'll turn fans against him.

Posted By: Davis (Guest)  on July 17, 2008 at 05:09 PM

Wow, Punk did what HHH couldn't and increased ratings.

Except him to lose to Batista at The Bash and be jobbing to Burchill by the end of the month.

MLB All-Star Game = Who cares?

Posted By: Awesomeman (Guest)  on July 17, 2008 at 05:37 PM

It is newsworthy that Laurinitas and dunn are at fcw since they help decide whos called up.
ive been an roh fan since its inception but ive always thought he wasnt that great but its enjoyable seein him as champ and it gives you internet nobodys something to argue about, which hurts nothing except hits on gay porn sites
kanes great

sweet there were enough people on these boards the other day asking for Punk to drop the title when the ratings went down when the time most people tuned in was during his match. See people do want new things and oh people they like.

Posted By: Paul E (Guest)  on July 17, 2008 at 05:51 PM

yeah its because of Kane sure. These are the same people who probably thought Kane was going to bring up ECW's ratings heck Mark Henry has had better ratings then Kane had.

Posted By: oh please (Guest)  on July 17, 2008 at 05:54 PM

CM PUNK still =EPIC FAIL

Posted By: MMMBop (Guest)  on July 17, 2008 at 05:55 PM

Uh, I care about the MLB All-Star Game, I stayed up to 2am watching it.

Posted By: E. Nygma (Guest)  on July 17, 2008 at 05:56 PM

Punk needs something to freshen up- not sure what though.
Kane is all I watched ECW for.
REGAL! REGAL! REGAL!

Posted By: FUZEY (Guest)  on July 17, 2008 at 06:17 PM

You sure ppl didn't watch that match to see what Kane was going to do? Maybe Kanes the cause of that high rating

Posted By: Guest#9220 (Guest)  on July 17, 2008 at 06:45 PM

cena as champ ========= low ratings

Posted By: Guest#3293 (Guest)  on July 17, 2008 at 07:35 PM

LOL
that you think that Kane had anything to do with a ratings spike

Kane has been in the dumpster for the last few years.

Posted By: opp (Guest)  on July 17, 2008 at 08:46 PM

Punk sucks!

Kane with his cliff-hanger ending last week and people wanting to see what he had in the bag spiked the ratings...

CONGRATULATIONS KANE!

Posted By: bolo (Guest)  on July 17, 2008 at 08:59 PM

The plan for Regal is obvious. Uncontrolled chaos on RAW (at least according to storylines) = Regal reinstated as heel GM... and books himself in a Title match against CM Punk at SummerSlam (though obviously does the JOB here).

Posted By: Guest#7904 (Guest)  on July 17, 2008 at 09:00 PM

Ohmygod quit with the "ratings" thing already. "It will pop a rating"..."It will increase buys"...if they really wanted to push Punk his "stories" would be on at the end of Raw...

Posted By: Jase (Guest)  on July 17, 2008 at 09:19 PM

"I like the cookies." "I like the cream." "Put us together we're the cookie dream team! We're Kane and Punk! Kane and Punk!" The dirt sheet is awsome.

Posted By: cerulean (Guest)  on July 17, 2008 at 10:37 PM

If u look at the ratings carefully, the Batista appearence is when the ratings started rising.

Posted By: Haza (Guest)  on July 17, 2008 at 10:44 PM

This proves Kane is a draw when he's performing in the ring.

Posted By: Dr Domino (Guest)  on July 18, 2008 at 04:33 AM

I'm a fan of Regal also, but I pray they don't put him back into a "heel GM" role since the position has been ran into the ground and was last entertaining 10 years ago. A heel GM doesn't draw heat from dastardly actions against faces but rather by scheduling matches which often (sometimes) turn out to be.. entertaining ??(which I hope they're intended to be for ratings sake) We also rarely get a chance to wait for the heel GM to get his "come-uppance" since he very infrequently wrestles.

Posted By: jasonel (Guest)  on July 18, 2008 at 04:36 AM

Its been a good start for Punk as champion, people who say hes been booked weak are wrong, i mean he pushed Batista & anyone can get caught with the spinbuster.

I just hope he can hold onto the title till at least summerslam.

kane with a mask = mega over

WTF

know I know why the WWE is so off target with their programs

having a mask on Kane makes this stale dude interesting again. What?

Posted By: opp (Guest)  on July 18, 2008 at 09:32 AM

It was Kane that got the ratings up.

Posted By: Guest#0459 (Guest)  on July 18, 2008 at 02:38 PM

I guess this week they're gonna give CM Punk another one on one match w/someone and then have Kane do another psycho segment to see which draws more. But yeah, I always new fans would tune in to see wrestlers on a WRESTLING show DESPITE what WWE writters may think.

Posted By: Kristian (Guest)  on July 18, 2008 at 03:42 PM

i guess ppl just dont wanna see trips as champ anymore
