WWE News: McMahon's Birthday, SD! Viewers, MSG Sellout, Layla Update
Posted by Ashish on 08.24.2008

- Vince McMahon turns 63 today.

- Smackdown viewership was down a bit on Friday. The show drew 3.85 million viewers.

- The reason Layla El has been gone for awhile is because her mother passed away and so she has been out of the country taking care of family issues.

- The WWE show in Madison Square Garden was a legitimate sellout last night despite empty seats. All the empty seats were sold.

Any chance that (very quietly) Vince has been on a wellness "leave"? His departure from TV has been very similar to other wellness departures.

If not - happy birthday.

So that means you're a certified homo, congratulations.

EPIC SCRAMBLE!

BobbyC: Vince's departure was used as a way to explain the cancellation of the Million Dollar Mania giveaway.

Guest#8742: I believe he said "next person", which would exclude his post. So he's not a homo, but you MAY be illiterate.

"Layla who?"

"come back soon layla. i dont care much for your "wrestling" or your dancing, but damn your very hot"

Wow, the woman loses her mother and you jackoffs don't even have the decency to show a modicum of respect. You deserve to have your balls cut off.

She's that girl.

Damn poor Layla. The passing of a loved one is always a hard time. My thoughts go out to her during thi tough time.

Hope things work out for Layla I lost my grandmother a year ago and I still haven't really gotten over it

Happy birthday Vinnie Mac, thank you for staying off my tv

and last but not least it sucks that SmackDown lost a couple viewers because this weeks edition was pretty good. From Brian Kendrick being added to the world title match to a fun match between MVP and Festus and a great TV match between Shelton and Finlay SmackDown was probably the best teleivsed show last week

Hmm, I find myself agreeing with Super Dragon tonight. Lets not shit on someone who just lost their mother, please? We're better than that.

Oh and can we please retire the Epic Fail bullshit? It's getting incredibly annoying.

FTR, I like Layla. She's sexy as hell and she's shown more personality than most of the cookie cutter "diva's" these days. I long for Trish, Lita and Molly. The only ones who seem to be carrying their torch is Mickie and Beth.

Let The Rock sing to Vince like he did to Stephanie McMahon back in 2001.

"BobbyC: Vince's departure was used as a way to explain the cancellation of the Million Dollar Mania giveaway."

More proof that the average Internet wrestling fan doesn't have the slightest clue about how marketing works. You see it as "losing" $3 million and not increasing ratings.

Smart people with a business background know the promotion was genius and WWE likely made their money several times over and will continue to do so.

ummm, but the Million Dollar Giveaway didn't increase ratings very substantially at all.

"ummm, but the Million Dollar Giveaway didn't increase ratings very substantially at all.

Posted By: Rob (Guest) on August 24, 2008 at 10:43 PM"

Right. That's my point. Fans see that the ratings spiked one-tenth of a ratings point (or remained flat), and deemed it a failure.

What they don't realize is that the $3 million WWE shelled out for the promotion was peanuts for the amount of attention and marketing success WWE got from it. Companies spend almost as much for Super Bowl ads that aren't nearly as successful.

Again, marketers understand the genius behind it. People that only look as ratings as the #1 barometer of success just keep saying "EPIC FAIL".

Just out of curiousity, Brad B., would you mind explaining to me the success of Million Dollar Mania? If that success hasn't been financial, or a success in ratings or pay-per0view buys, then what kind of success was it? And, being as it was so successful for the company, why did they abruptly end it ahead of schedule? Did vince feel that it was so successful that it would be greedy of him to continue raking in these alleged benefits to his company?

Posted By: Cortez (Guest)  on August 25, 2008 at 01:47 PM

No one ever claimed Vince died.

Posted By: Guest#8807 (Guest)  on August 25, 2008 at 03:03 PM

Cortez: The million dollar giveaway was a marketing tool. Yes, increasing ratings was one reason to run the contest, even though WWE knew it would only be for a temporary gain. But they got something far more valuable out of the deal: contact information for tons of WWE fans/customers.

If you actually entered into the giveaway, how did you register? You filled out a comprehensive form with ALL contact information and key demographics: name, age, email, phone number, address, etc. Each of the hundreds of thousands people who entered the Million Dollar Giveaway had to provide this information to gain entry.

So you may be thinking: "so what? I didn't have to use my credit card or buy anything. I didn't mind giving up that info." And that's what WWE was hoping for - people to willingly give up very private data in order to have a shot at winning valuable cash prizes.

For $3 million, they compiled a complete database of WWE fans and casual viewers that they couldn't grab from typical Nielsen ratings, surveys, or other compilation methods. These contest participants willingly gave up all this information for a shot at winning the money.

With this information legally in hand, WWE was now free to:

-Promote new items and discounts to ShopZone
-Sign up WWE fans for their email newsletter
-Provide ticket information for upcoming house shows and pay-per-views
-Send out important programming notices (like the one that went out today reminding viewers that RAW as on Sci-Fi tonight)

Ask any professional marketer and they will tell you that grabbing a person's full contact information is the number one most important marketing tool. And it's neither easy nor cheap to do. To compile a database this large by renting names or sending out direct mail, you'd have to spend a ton of money and there's no guarantee the prospects will be interested in what you sell.

By doing this, Vince was able to get contact info of hundreds of thousands of people who have a vested interest in WWE and would be the top prospects for purchasing WWE merchandise and spending money on the product.

With this contest, Vince sold new DVDs, increased PPV buys, moved more merchandise, and filled venues for house shows and live appearances, all from a seemingly risky idea that had everyone in the industry talking (good or bad). And he will continue to have this info and profit from this list for years to come.

As to why he canceled it, it's the same reason ratings don't go up. There's only so many new people that will tune into RAW each week. He likely got all the contact info he would during those first three weeks. Keeping the promotion going would just eat into his profits.

Hope this made sense. If any marketing pros can debunk these facts, I'm more than willing to read your comments.
