Mick Foley Releases Statement on Future
Posted by Larry Csonka on 09.03.2008

Mick Foley and The Gillespie Agency released the following statement today:

September 3, 2008 - Statement from Mick Foley on leaving WWE, his future with TNA Wrestling and other opportunities.

"As of today, I am a free agent in the world of professional wrestling. I will always be grateful to WWE for affording me so many incredible opportunities over the past thirteen years, but feel the time is right to pursue other endeavors. This move frees me up to participate in more film, television and voice roles, autograph sessions, speaking engagements, volunteer work, and will allow me the time to start work on a third novel, a fourth wrestling memoir and a new children's story

Over the next few weeks I will be working with my management team at Braverman/Bloom Co., Inc. in pursuing a couple of unique investment opportunities. I can confirm I have had discussions with TNA Wrestling and have come to a short-term agreement. I am very excited about the specifics of this agreement and the potential it holds."

Mick Foley is available for booking through The Gillespie Agency. For more information contact Elaine Gillespie ( elaine@GillespieTalent.com ) or Nola Armstrong ( nola@GillespieTalent.com ).

I am actually pretty interested to see what he will be doing in TNA without any WWE influence. We COULD see some amazing stuff...but its always a crap shoot.

A FOURTH book? I got a title for ya, Mick. It's called "The Biggest Crybaby Since Bret Hart".

I hope Foley has creative control

Please god, let foley do his own writing, dont let russo pen his promos

That beatdown he took on smackdown and the promo prior to it with edge was awesome and vince was an ass to disrespect mick, shouting at him through his headset...... makes me wish i had watched smackdown while mick had the announcers job, cheers vince (mcmahon)

and in a few weeks, after Impact maintains its 1.1's and 1.0's (inspite of foleys involvment), i can imagine myself writing:

cheers Vince (russo) for fucking up Mick Foley becaue you made him the mouthpeice for the Millionaires Club, now feuding with the New Blood (wasn't AJ and Joe world champions 5 Years ago).

Screw Vince Russo!!!!!

So....a sad pathetic individual is made a god by Taker in a hell in the cell match, made a fn enjoyable toon by the Rock and he ends it with WWE for TNA? Bite my balls Foley with the two teeth ya got left

I guess I never realized that the WWE had such a tight rein on their employees. First Flair now Foley.

Ok Chris, why exactly is he a crybaby? I don't plan on reading his next book, but I don't see him whining about being screwed by the E. He just wasn't comfortable doing commentary with Vince screaming in his headset. Comparing him to one of the most bitter marks in the business is huge overstatement.

a 4th book??? is that some kind of record?

"Please god, let foley do his own writing, dont let russo pen his promos"

That's funny... and let me preface this by stating that I'm not insinuating that Foley doesn't have the talent to write his own promos... However, wasn't it under Russo's writing that Foley truly became a star?

And sadly, even though Foley's first two books are two of my favorite books I've ever read... His third one left me with such a bad taste in my mouth about the man that I may not even buy the fourth. I think Foley greatly overestimates his importance in the wrestling industry.

And this is where Mick Foley begins to fall off the map of relevance until he returns to the WWE on the 20th Anniversary of Raw Special, several pounds heavier and desperate for money.

TNA's already got a, well, nothing teaser up. Just a happy face logo, some barbed wire, and "have a nice day!" on it, though the graphic's filename is Foley.

Stay tuned for more... I'm betting Foley comes in at No Surrender, Oshawa would pop big for him.

The only hope Foley has for decent sales on a FOURTH auto bio is to rip wwe, mcmahon etc. Probably made the decision a little easier, that and tna films in the theme park capital of the world.

I always liked Foley before he came into WWE...this could end up pretty interesting. Is it really his fault that TNA is probably giving Foley more money than his past WWE contract? Stop hating on making money!

Mick going to TNA will be good... Provided that they give Mick creative control...

Lets review.... Heyman gave Mick control during the WCW crossover that led to Mick's release from WCW (Remember the Hardcore angle... and the 4 TIME CLASSIC interviews he gave?!)... I just hope the TNA kids glean a lot of advice from Foley... He is a legend and I think Mick has probably 2 more good matches in him...

I just dont want him to do the Abyss thing... shessh that would suck...

Go Mick Foley, TNA will treat you good. Good ole Jimmy Cornette and all the gang will treat you like family. It is good you are turning over a good leaf.

Maybe you and Sting can have a rematch just like how you did in WCW days. You guys took it too the limit. My sister had a car like yours, I think it was yours.. The Ford Faremont. Kick ass willyou Cactus Jack..The fans still like you especially now that you are in talks with TNA.

Go Mick..

Mick Foley says goodbye for the... what? ... 10th time since retiring after No Way Out 2000. Goodbye - stay away - nobody cares about you anymore - you could have had life time employment by the WWE but you bit the hand that feeds you.

I know first hand what a huge asshole Mick Foley is. He was a fun loving guy when he was in WCW, ECW, and early in his WWF career. He was great with the fans and that's one of the reasons we loved him. Having met him recently a few times, he just blows fans off and keeps the line moving. See ya at the Hall of Fame induction a few years from now you bitter stuntman.

Foley has given his life and body to wrestling, and doesn't owe anyone anything. He is a professional and a legend and he has his reasons for doing what he's doing. I'm sure the majority of the fans respect his decision, sans a few morons that posted above me.

Let's recap TNA's success with bringing in former big stars from WWE/WCW:

well.....Sting.....he did......

he did......

he must have done SOMETHING.

oh wait, that's right. he didn't.

Angle! Well...he tried to do a Shooting Star Press once.....that was sort of cool.

Team 3D - Well...they've both gotten fatter and even more untalented, which is quite the impressive feat.

Sarcasm aside, the point i'm trying to make is that no matter WHO TNA has brought in from other companies, Impact ratings have stayed the same or dropped slightly, buyrates are still embarrassingly low and fan interest is waning. If bringing in STING hasn't done anything, than neither will bringing in Foley. People just don't care.

It makes me sick to my stomach to read all these negative comments toward Mick Foley. Mick isn't biting the hand that feeds him and he's certainly not selling his legacy short, one bit. He's doing what he feels is best, which is the only thing any of us can ever do. These same people who are lambasting Mick like he's the anti-Christ are the same people who complain day in and day out about the poor quality of WWE programming as of late and how out of touch with their fans that the McMahons are. And while TNA may not currently be offering a quality that is only as high as or even lower than WWE, perhaps Mick is just sick of being secluded to one brand? Perhaps he too is sick of the McMahons and their loving of the smell of their own shit? Perhaps he too is tired of being stuck in the current mire of the WWE?

Then again, maybe he's just following the buck (i.e. money) and one more final opportunity for greatness, albeit not with the brand that made him who he is today. Remember: Mick was a star worldwide before he ever enterted WWF/WWE (probably a more respected and feared star at that). People should give the guy a chance in a new environment before they condemn him to hell. If anything, it'll mean a few weeks of interesting TNA programming.

Lighten up, haters. Your consistent ultra-negativity is a downer to the rest of us.

People who rip on Foley for leaving the dictotorship of professional wrestling are fucking retards.

Let's get one thing straight right now..

Mick Foley is NOT a legendary wrestler.

Legendary stuntman? You got it. Legendary jobber to the stars? Sure. Ability to pump out great promos? Absolutely! But.. WRESTLER? Mick Foley will never be a great wrestler, never be a legendary wrestler - he's a man who took risks most of us would never take and that's his real legacy right there. He put over a lot of guys, helped make influential figures into stars, and can work the mic like very few others.

With that said, don't confuse Foley for a real Hall of Famer. The man was on his back most of his career and when he had a belt, it was for what, 24 hours once? 1 month another time? 3 weeks the first one? As time has gone on, the worth of Mick Foley has dropped. While he'll always be remembered for being a great stuntman I cannot recall one single time he was "a great wrestler" and a legend in THAT field. So have fun in TNA, enjoy the lighter schedule and try and help out all you can Mick. But you will never be a WRESTLING legend. As Flair himself said a long time ago, you're ultimately a glorified stuntman. I wish Mick luck in TNA but please people, in 2008 what do you think this guy can actually accomplish? One misstep with the creative/management aspect and he'll walk all over again.

Mick + Erick Young = GOLD!

I'm REALLY just amazed by the people who're saying he sold out or whatever, do YOU plan on staying with the same company for the rest of your life?

Good to hear it's official, if TNA has any brains they'll at least get him to contribute backstage and have him work with the younger guys on promo's and storytelling. Plus I'd actually buy any PPV with a Cactus vs Sting match on it (yes, I'm STILL that much of a mark for the work these 2 did and don't give damn who knows it)

Posted By: PJ (Guest)  on September 03, 2008 at 09:01 PM

Whoever said that the Undertaker made Mick Foley a god in their infamous Hell in a Cell match is an idiot! Foley did all the work in that match and made the Undertaker look like a killer. I personally don't watch TNA anymore but I'll tune in again to see what they do with Foley, whether I keep tuning or not is up to TNA.

Posted By: Unabashedly biased (Guest)  on September 03, 2008 at 09:24 PM

Best of luck to him. It's not like he's been anything but a short-term employee pretty much since 2000 anyway, so I don't see why people are complaining about his wanting to move on to other things.

Posted By: Guest#7139 (Guest)  on September 03, 2008 at 09:25 PM

Foley won't shoot on WWE and won't burn any bridges. He knows he needs WWE when it's time to promote all these books.

it would be great if Foley's role with TNA is as a writer more than a television personality.

All of these people who are pissing on Mick Foley's legacy will be the first ones sucking his dick the second he steps back in WWE for the Hall of Fame!

I think it's great just to see what he can do in TNA. Perhaps he can push for them to eliminate some of the goofiness and get back to what works!

Here's the deal...

If Mick Foley goes to TNA...who cares, let him. Whether he is on WWE or TNA tv..we will at the very least ...be able to check out what he is doing and how TNA is using him...and either like it or not like it. Thats it. Personally, I don't think he will improve ratings...but I don't watch TNA anyway, so I could care less...but on the chance that he does...then good. If Mick Foley going to TNA makes wrestling as a whole more interesting ...we all win. If it aint more interesting, he's just like angle, dudleys and others who made the jump.

As far as Foley's WWE career and legacy go...he did not leave on bad terms...maybe a little bitter, but not bad. For the morons who want to be picky and have stupid arguements about the definition of a "wrestler"...stop taking yourselves too seriously. What it comes down to is, Was Mick Foley a good "professional wrestler" aka did he entertain you and did he have quality matches, and in my opinion, the answer to both is yes. Yes...he had his stinkers for matches, but who hasn't. Looking at Mick Foley's WWE run...you can't argue with the entertainment he provided with his interviews, the bumps he took, and the storytelling that his matches had.

Bottom Line: Foley made a career change at a point in his career where no matter what he does (other than some extreme form of wwe bashing)..his legacy is secure and the door will always be open to appear in wwe and pretty much any wrestling federation in the world...because whether you like it or not...he is a legend for the wrestling entertainment he brought to the ring.

Now for the all idiots who want to go back to bashing foley for stupid reasons...go ahead.

The TNA part of this release is two sentences long among mentions of all the other things he'll be doing. It sounds like won't be around all that match. I wouldn't be surprised if TNA is just Mick's way to plug whatever ventures he has upcoming.

With Foley in TNA I fully expect a hilariously ironic confrontation with Abyss, now clearly imitating a gassed-out Mankind.

Foley should have a gimmick where he controls Abyss from the announcers table with a magical videogame controller. Anything to push the Impact game, right?

Oh, and Creter up there forgot to mention how Vader totally put Foley over by ripping off his ear.

"So....a sad pathetic individual is made a god by Taker in a hell in the cell match, made a fn enjoyable toon by the Rock and he ends it with WWE for TNA? Bite my balls Foley with the two teeth ya got left "

...is he kidding?

Taker couldn't walk in that match, Foley carried him through it with two of the best bumps in history. The man was already a legend before WWE, or are you too busy jerking it to HHH (who Foley also made into a superstar) to see genuine commitment and talent?

I couldn't have said that better myself.

And all of you saying Mick sold out Fuck you and your WWE badge. If all you are going to do is say he sold out you should take a look at some other shit you mean in retrospect.

By saying Foley is a sell out for going to TNA you are saying Sting is a sell out as well. Lets take a look at my point here.
Sting leaves WCW when it gets closed by the McMahons. Sting jumps to TNA becomes a "sell out" but yet he s in the smaller company with alot less politics, keeping his name big with and all together he works one day a month. Oh yes huge sell out let me tell you. And since he is such a sell out why has WWE or should I say Vinny Mac tried recruiting him more times than many idiots that come on here can count.

My point is that with Foley going to TNA he isn't selling out. He is rehashing his name so he will be remembered. Glorified Stuntman or not the WWE Hall of Fame is a joke, for fucks sake Pete Rose was inducted and all he ever did was take a tombstone from Kane 3 years in a row.

And everyone saying Foley s probably getting more money from TNA probably not their biggest investment is Sting and Sting gets paid less than hhhalf of WWE's roster so Foley probably isn't getting more money yet he doesn't have an arrogant McMahon PMSing in his ear cause his tampon just swirled around in his asshole!

Alright, I said it before, now comes the part where I figure out if a) I can keep myself from watching iMPACT because it has employed (another) person whom I don't see as being able to withstand the strain of wrestling (as well as a guy whose last eight years in wrestling have almost entirely erased any impact the first fourteen had), and b) am I staying away because of Mick, or because the show's so damn difficult to watch?
I remember, though, hearing him talking on a podcast from the UK early last year, and he said, "I guess what I'm looking for is a Mick Foley stunt double," so he could do all the talking and setup for the match, and send someone else out to wrestle it. I do believe I shouted at my faux-Pod, "What, did you forget what a manager is?" I swear, there still should be a niche for managers, and if there'll ever be one, it'll be TNA. And THAT, I'd pay to see.

There certainly is a double standard when it comes to professional wrestling, isn't there? If any music artist left their record label because of execs telling them how their next album should sound, they'd be revered by the same kvetching mopes that are trashing Foley for basically doing the same thing. I don't even watch TNA, and yet I still say this is a good move by Foley. He'll still be a hall of famer and he'll still be loved by the WWE crowd once he does come back, whenever that may be. Anyone who says otherwise is a whiny little corporate shill. What a bunch of bitching hypocritical crybabies you all are.

I don't think that Mic Foley has ruined his legacy in the last eight years.

For me, Foley is the best wrestler of all time. Sure not technically, but he is someone that the fans can connect with because he's one of them. The last eight years have only added on to his legacy, because he's such a fan of the business that he can't stay away from it.

Taker DID NOT want to do the off the cage bump. He said so out of kayfabe in the Beyond the Mat movie. The reason Foley survived that fall was because his giant gonads cushioned the blow. The Rock and Sock connection was good comedy, sure. But only because of the dynamic of these two highly likable personalities. The Rock played the straight man (Abbot) and Foley was Costello. They were funny as hell, which takes a lot of skill on both men's part.
Hardly a sad pathetic individual as you call him.
Oh, by the way, how many novels have you written, Creter. How many WHT have you held? How many thousands of people have chanted your name?
Nope. Didn't think so.

"Perhaps he can push for them to eliminate some of the goofiness"

There's some irony in that statement. Aren't we talking about the guy whose finisher involved a sock puppet?

A FOURTH book? I got a title for ya, Mick. It's called "The Biggest Crybaby Since Bret Hart".

Wrong it's going to be called "The Biggest Crybaby Right After Bret Hart".

"Unabashedly biased,

It is true that Mick carried the match. Taker had a ****ing broken foot. Foley had to CARRY the match. Watch the match before you put supply your stupid opinions. Foley is an awesome wrestler."

Um, I think that's what I said. My point was that the Undertaker didn't make Mick Foley a star in that match, Foley made himself a star be stealing the show single handedly. Undertaker did next to nothing because of the aforementioned broken foot.

So chill out dude, I like Foley too, we're on the same side of the argument here.
