New Wrestling Drama Headed to HBO
Posted by Larry Csonka on 10.01.2008
“The Wrestler” seems to be having an impact already…
The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Norman Lear, creator of both "All In the Family" and "The Jeffersons," as well as many other TV projects will be teaming with HBO to produce a new dramatic series set in the world of 1970s professional wrestling entitled "Everybody Hurts."
The series will be written by Aaron Blitzstein, who was a former Vice President of marketing for World Championship Wrestling has also written for FX's The Riches, The Late Show with David Letterman and other shows.
"Everybody Hurts" will be based on a family running a pro-wrestling business in New York with looks into the lives of the wrestlers and their fans.

I just might get my HBO back for this. Either that or I'll just Netflix the season...

Awesome! Looks like I'll be adding HBO back into my DIRECTV package soon

If it's a ratings flop, they can always end the series by having Triple H bury the entire cast in the finale.

Sounds good as long as they remember what every other thing to portray wrestling has forgotten: it's a work.
Any word on if "The Wrestler" portrays it as a work?

Will R.E.M. do the theme song?
Posted By: William (Guest) on October 01, 2008 at 10:57 AM
Sounds very promising. Hope this gets picked up.

I've often thought that the actual drama that goes on in the office and backstage is much more interesting than what is actually put on camera.
Wrestling is too much of an interesting business not to have a drama show based on it.

I wonder if they will use the REM song for there intro.

This was the era just before Vince took over the company. THAT is the ONLY reason this show is getting made. Its "BEFORE" Vince's time so he could care less. Dont count on too many endorsements OR WWE talent appearing on the show.

I'm glad HBO did this before fox or nbc.

wow, I think I'll ask my mom and dad to get HBO in my room so I can watch this with the rest of my IWC friends, anything on TV involving wrestling is great, gotta go now and book my fantasy league, and rate matches from raw, btw ROH rules the world

If it's set in the 70s, why is the title cribbed from a R.E.M. song?

This show=EPIC FAIL. Guarantee you it gets canceled within a few weeks.

hbo should get an actual federation to do shows on their channel, now that would be sick
Posted By: Dan (Guest) on October 01, 2008 at 12:12 PM

Posted By: Richie (Guest) on October 01, 2008 at 12:32 PM

Sounds more like the Sopranos and Madmen. Except instead of crime and advertising. Its about the business of pro wrestling. Should be great HBO always deliver.
Posted By: dick (Guest) on October 01, 2008 at 02:08 PM
It is not the same show that was on TLC is it.
Posted By: what (Guest) on October 01, 2008 at 02:08 PM
I am all over this show like stink on a monkey. HBO hasn't had a decent new show in a couple years, but they used to crank em out like clockwork. Deadwood, Sopranos, Curb, Entourage, and now a show from NORMAN LEAR? About WRESTLING? Gotta calm down...
Oh yeah, look Ma, NO POSER!

To answer Stereotype's question The Wrestler does portray the business as a "work" going behind the scenes and showing various wrestlers planning out their matches and Ring of Honor gets mentioned by name as the best indy promotion in North America, it's pretty realistic.

Are REM actually wrestling fans? I know they did that song man on the moon about Andy Kaufman's stint in wrestling which mentions the My Breakfast With Blassie film.

Maaaan HBO put the kibosh on a "Preacher" TV adaptation but green-lighted this? Ah well, it still might be good.
