More Various News: WWE Slammy Nominees, New ROH Videowire, More
Posted by Ashish on 12.03.2008

- Here are the Match of the Year and Diva of the Year nominees for the 2008 Slammy Awards.

Match of the Year:
*2008 Royal Rumble
*Shawn Michaels vs. Ric Flair - WrestleMania 24 *Money in the Bank match won by CM Punk - WrestleMania 24
*The Undertaker vs. Edge in - Hell in a Cell match at Summerslam 2008.

Diva of the Year:
*Mickie James
*Kelly Kelly
*Beth Phoenix
*Michelle McCool

- Here is the latest ROH videowire. The video features footage of Samoa Joe's return to ROH and the company's new production values for their Chicago Ridge, IL PPV.

- Del Wilkes, best known as The Patriot, is upset about the usage of The Patriot name on the independent scene. Bill Behrens sent out this release today on his behalf.
I heard today from Del Wilkes, who wrestled as The Patriot in Global Wrestling and in WWE.

He retired from wrestling a while back but does occasionally do autograph appearances.

Wilkes called because Tom Brandi, who appears frequently in the NE as The Patriot (as well as Salvatore Sincere, often both on one show), has been telling folks that he bought the Patriot gimmick from Wilkes and is using it legally and properly.

Wilkes says that is not true, and that Brandi is simply using the gimmick and trademark without his permission and illegally. Wilkes says he has not communicated with Brandi nor has seen him since 1994.

In addition, Wilkes says that photos used to promote Brandi and that Brandi sells at indy shows are actually Wilkes WWE promo photos and has the WWE logos on the photos.

I've seen promotion for Brandi where he's been called the WWE's Patriot, which clearly he was not and violates copyrights laws.

Del Wilkes did not say whether he planned to take any action against Tom Brandi for the fraud he has been committing, but wanted to inform everyone of the situation.

Wilkes asked that I get this story out to everyone.

Then why did he wait so long to make a complaint about someone using his former gimmick? He must not care -that- much.

None of the above for WWE Match of the year. I've got HHH/Hardy at No Mercy, followed by a tie for 2nd: the unsanctioned Unforgiven match and the No Mercy ladder match which are obviously both Jericho/Michaels. The Rumble, the Raw Elimination Chamber, Michaels/Flair, Edge/Taker I, and HHH/Cena (begrudgingly) are honorable mentions.

Not expecting everyone to agree with me, just my opinion.

Definitely looks like ROH is stepping up the production values. Good for them.

Money in the Bank is also nominated for match of the year, but I'll go with HBK vs. Flair. For the diva, I say Beth

That match listing looks incomplete to me, how can you not have HBK, Jericho ladder match?

The Kelly Kelly forced down our throats despite having no talent or charisma push continues. How can she possibly even be nominated for this is beyond me. Even in kayfabe terms she's achieved absolutely nothing.

How do you copyright a gimmick like The Patriot?

If that's the case, he should've sued WWE for the whole Mr America thing.

Tom Brandi has been using this gimmick and making this claim for nearly a decade. Wilkes is just finding out about this now?

The Match of the year is going to be Shawn Michaels vs. Ric Flair - WrestleMania 24. That match stole the show, and it was either ****, ****1'2, or *****.

inb4 Flair/HBK in a landslide.

Match of the Year: Shawn Michaels vs. Ric Flair - WrestleMania 24

Diva of the Year: Beth Phoenix

mickie james should win diva of the year.

she is the most popular female on the roster.

beth is a heel. she is also boring personality wise.

same with michelle mccool.

kelly is used in a secondary role.

Diva of the Year: Shawn Michaels.

Sal sincere is getting a slammy for stealing the patriot gimmick???
Wait, did I read this wrong?

Del, Whatsa matta you???

Why is the Rumble even mentioned with match of the year? The winner came in last making it pointless.

McCool will win the Diva one even though I think Beth should get it.

And out of those matches i'd say Michaels vs Flair should get it.

"How do you copyright a gimmick like The Patriot? If that's the case, he should've sued WWE for the whole Mr America thing."

He's suing because the guy used the trademarked name The Patriot, not the gimmick.

@ Disgruntled.

Id like to force something down Kelly Kellys throat. She's the hottest diva ever, and even though shes got a ways to go she has improved her efforts. She deserves to be where shes at on her looks alone.

"Why is the Rumble even mentioned with match of the year? The winner came in last making it pointless."

So the guy coming in fresher than anyone else in a match he's officially involved is not supposed to win because it makes the whole thing pointless? I thought the whole concept behind the number 30 entrant is that he has the advantage. That's like saying having the number 1 or 2 guy winning is pointless because the rest of the guys don't need to come out. To have a THIRTY man match, you need THIRTY men.

Matt, how can you say Phoenix is boring personality wise? She's come on leaps and bounds since being paired with Santino, and her facial expressions and general behaviour around the guy are awesome little moments.
