CM Punk Makes History on Raw
Posted by Larry Csonka on 01.20.2009

With his Intercontinental Title win last night on Raw, CM Punk made history by becoming the fastest man to win the WWE Triple Crown (Heavyweight Title, IC Title and Tag Team Titles). CM Punk won the World Title on June 30th, 2008, and with his victory last night completed the Triple Crown in just 203 days. The previous record holder was Diesel (Kevin Nash), who did it in 227 days.

Hopefully he gets to defend the IC title at Wrestlemania and not just get thrown into the MITB match.

i history and i am in favor of teh titles the wwe has. but the triple crown is no longer relevant.
now the first person to hold the lucky number 7 will truly make history. punk is already on his way.

So is CM Punk gonna be a permanent champion or is this a one shot deal?

so much for being a "no name indy wrestler" huh?

Posted By: haters be damned (Guest)  on January 20, 2009 at 12:53 AM

Well, technically the Triple Crown that Nash held involved the WWE Title, not the World Heavyweight Title but it's still an accomplishment.

Posted By: His Bubbliness (Guest)  on January 20, 2009 at 12:53 AM

..and to top it off he's about 227 times the wrestler Nash is.

Does the Triple Crown mean anything anymore? Does anyone care?

Now all he needs to do is win the Rumble, go to SmackDown, win those titles, and become King of the Ring.

Posted By: Mechalon (Guest)  on January 20, 2009 at 01:07 AM

He will also probably have the distinction of being the fastest to lose all 3 too!

I bet he'll hold that record for a long time...until RVD resigns and wins all three titles in one night

Nash's accomplishment means more since back then there weren't two World Titles in the company. The brand extension has been ignored so its like the WWE has two World Titles, which really dilutes the importance of being a World Champion in the WWE.

Posted By: Michael (Guest)  on January 20, 2009 at 01:46 AM

The funniest part isn't how fast he did it... It's that he did it in revers order of importance as he slid down the card.

World Champion to World Tag Champion to IC champion.

Welcome to midcard for life.

Considering that wrestling is fake. It should read Fastest to be given championships. You cant win at a fake sport...dumb assess. Being the fastest triple crown champion is like being the last guy to arrive at a gang bang. Get a life marks.

I disagree. When Nash won all the WWE had was RAW. Now there is SD! and ECW. That's more time to fill and the roster is much larger nowadays. It's just like how the definition of a "long" title reign is fewer days now that it was years ago. Times change and the brand grows.

When Nash won his title the WWE was losing to WCW and it didn't have that many big names. Punk's winning his titles at a time where there is an endless supply of big names. If anything Punk's accomplishments are much more impressive than Nash's; multiple world titles be damned.

"Matt Hardy is the most recent Grand Slam champion, what about that?"

Even WWE doesn't count the ECW title as a world title. Nor should anyone. It doesn't headline any ppvs. It doesn't headline it's own houseshows. The champion was in the frigging Royal Rumble last year trying to earn a WORLD title shot. There are 11 people on the roster. Is that enough? Should...should I keep going?

Jack Swagger is not a world champion. Chavo Guerrero has never been a world champion.

Hell right from the beginning of the belt's relaunch RVD held on to the WWE title since it was...you know...an actual important major title.

You're commenting on a news article on a wrestling website so either you're trying way too hard to be cool by calling everyone marks or your life is so shallow that you need to make fun of others online just to build up your confidence. Either way you're failing in a big way.

you should watch his stuff from ROH and the indies it will prove that he is anything but generic hes great in the ring and even betetr on the mic
but the wwe holds him back so he looks generic

i have to agree but u forgot it went like this

ECW champ to World Champ to Tag Champ to IC Champ.I think if Punk wins the WWE title he will be the first person to hold WWE ECW title WWE World Heavyweight and WWE title.I would say BIg Show but he never held the world championship

Yeah... Bet Punk is happy he broke a record, bet he's not so happy that he's now joined the relatively small group of wrestlers who have been World Champ, only to be pushed back down to secondary titles... Benoit, Flair etc. Jeff hardy will join the list soon too !

Kudos to Punk, now heres hoping he gets a transfer to SD! and picks up a United States, WWE Tag and WWE Heavyweight Title reign in short order to be a Double Triple Crown champion - have there been any of them yet?

Thinking...
Benoit & Eddie are both short a World or WWE title reign, HHH hasn't won the WWE tag or the United States.... No I don't think that's been done yet....

I don't think you can be a Grand Slam champion with the ECW Title, though it is a nice accomplishment. You need to win one of the big two, the World or WWE titles. Everyone knows the ECW Title isn't on the same level as them.

Nowadays with no European title, I guess the US title would replace it. A few have done it this way, including those that won it in WCW since WWE acknowledges that history with their US title. So there are a few ways to win the Grand Slam. Those who have done it are:

World/WWE, IC, Euro, Tag: Shawn Michaels, Triple H, Chris Jericho, Eddie Guerrero, Jeff Hardy, Kurt Angle, Rob Van Dam

World/WWE, IC, US, Tag: Edge, Chris Benoit, Booker T, Ric Flair, Steve Austin, Bret Hart

World/WWE, US, Euro, Tag: JBL

Several others are very close. Winning these titles would give these still-contracted WWE wrestlers some version of the Grand Slam:

US: Big Show, Kane, Randy Orton, CM Punk

IC: John Cena, Big Show

World/WWE: Carlito, Shelton Benjamin, Matt Hardy, William Regal, Christian (should he return)

Congrats Punk

For those of you who don't consider the ECW Title a World Title, here is some history for you. During the 4/21/08 RAW (KOTC Tournament) in a match between Orton, JBL, Chavo & Edge vs Triple H, Cena, Kane & Undertaker, JR said "...there is a combined 31 World Title reigns between these men".
Here's the math at the time of the match:
Orton - 3x World champ (reigning WWE Champ)
Chavo - 1x World Champ
JBL - 1x World Champ
Edge - 4x World Champ
Cena - 3x World Champ
Kane - 2x World Champ (reigning ECW Champ)
Triple H - 11x World Champ
Undertaker - 6x World Champ (reigning World Hvt)
All that equals 31.

The ECW Title is more of a World Title than the
TNA Title. They were in Japan and currently in Europe and that title has yet to be defended once internationaly. They should change the name of it to the TNA Television Title because that's the only time it's defended. Everytime WWE does a world tour all THREE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS are defended.

over the past few yrs, everyone who's held the ic title has had the ability to make it worth something if booked right, but the problem is always the same... IT'S NOT BOOKED RIGHT!

to book it right would be to make punk defend it every PPV against viable contenders eg. hardy v mvp for US title was awesome booking, if only they continued with this train of thought and had mvp hold onto it and keep on fighting off challengers, it would have been booked right too. in other words, booking has to treat the IC title like a world title, not merely as an accessory to be given to the new flavor of the month

Didn't Nash get it in his first 227 days with the company though? Punk debuted a long time ago, so I think it's kind of silly to say he won it in 203 days. That sounds like he won all these titles less than a year after making his debut.

Posted By: Paul (Guest)  on January 20, 2009 at 09:39 AM

The difference is that Nash went from IC, to tag team and the to world champion. Punk is so cool that he did it the opposite way from world, to tag team to IC.

Posted By: D (Guest)  on January 20, 2009 at 09:41 AM

If the WWE was smart they would play this up and build Punk into a bigger star.

But they won't. So Punk will be an upper mid card wrestler with a cult following for his career. Unless they turn him into the great ROH heel and cut him lose as a heel on the roster like they eventually did with Edge, that seems to be his fate.

Posted By: ETS (Guest)  on January 20, 2009 at 09:48 AM

This seems like a great accomplishment, but it feels like it's a case of setting the parameters so that you can bolster a statistic.

The feeling here is that CM Punk is the fastest to win a Triple Crown... STARTING FROM THE POINT WHERE HE FIRST WON ONE OF THOSE THREE CHAMPIONSHIPS. In that respect, then yes, Punk's a record breaker.

But if you then determine who was the fastest wrestler to win the Triple Crown from the moment of their debut in the company, then I think Nash still holds that record.

Obviously, anyone who knows for sure can correct me if I'm wrong.

Pedro morales
Bret Hart
Diesel
HBK
Austin
The Rock
HHH
Kane
Y2J
Kurt Angle
Eddie Guerrero
Benoit
Flair
Edge
RVD
Booker T
Randy Orton
Jeff Hardy
and now CM Punk

The only man who should truly get credit for being the GrandTripleFourSuperDuper titleholder is Jericho...he has held the WCW Cruiserweight, TV, and World Titles, and has held WWE's tag, IC, Euro, Hardcore (for about 15 seconds before Rhino killed him), and World (both versions)...no one even comes close to Jericho's lineage as far as titles go (sure, he hasn't won 18 WORLD titles like Flair, but Jericho's place in the history books is already set).

However, good for Punk...now do it on a show with Triple H and I'll be impressed.

I'm sorry, but it is not all that impressive to win the "fastest" Triple Crown in WWE history. It is nice trivia, but it really isn't a great accomplishment. Think about it, in order to win all three titles that quickly, you had to lose the first two real soon after you won them!

Here is a much more impressive accomplishment: Let's say that "Mr. X" took five years to win the Triple Crown, and it was because he first won the tag belts and held them for 18 months, then later had a 3 year reign as World Champion, then eventually won the I-C title. That would be something to brag about, since you obviously were doing something right to hold the belts that long. That's a lot more impressive than winning and losing them all in a few months!

I am old enough to remember when the triple crown meant something...simply because only Pedero Morales and Bret Hart had done it. If you take a look at the overall list of people to do it, it is a fairly elite group. With that being said, I cannot stand CM Punk, or at least what WWE is allowing Punk to be. Also, this great accomplishment is obviously just a ploy to do two things. One is to give some credibility to a kid that just by looking at him you would think, huh, this guy is a skinny little chump with greasy hair and fairly lame mic skills. The second is to placate everyone on the net that have been "blowing" Punk for years. Face it, all this kid is, is a watered-down version of RVD without the chemical issues. This is someone that given the right turn of events, could get the younger demographic. He looks and is forced to wrestle as an underdog. The problem is, the reason everyone loves Punk is for his indy work, which based on what I have seen, is not the moveset he is allowed to showcase on live television. Oh and by the way, did anyone else notice, that even though Punk has won the Triple Crown, he did win every title match on live TV, not a PPV. That is how much the WWE is behind the guy...he is not even worth risking a PPV slot on. How many world titles change hands on TV (on WWE) 10 or so in 15 years. His World title run was an absolute joke and did nothing to make me even consider him ready for that spot. Obviously no one else did either. I am sorry, but every time I see this kid, I just get a bad taste in my mouth...probably because CM Punk is being jammed down my throat at every turn. All that I can say is for those of you that really like the guy, I totally respect your opinion to get behind someone you like...just do it for the right reasons. If you like the kid because of what you have seen from him on the indies, great. I hope as much as anyone that he is allowed to showcase what brought him to the show. But if you want to think this kid is something special because he won a few titles in a short career...why don't you ask anyone how valuable fast-building someone is...make sure to reference Lesnar and Lashley when you do.

What's most amazing is he actually won all the titles on RAW as well

Nice... And in a few more months, when someone else dies of drugs, he will get the belt again!

It would be cool... If it wasn't CM Punk...

Yes it matters because the following are the only wrestlers in history to do it.
Pedro morales
Bret Hart
Diesel
HBK
Austin
The Rock
HHH
Kane
Y2J
Kurt Angle
Eddie Guerrero
Benoit
Flair
Edge
RVD
Booker T
Randy Orton
Jeff Hardy
and now CM Punk

"Considering that wrestling is fake. It should read Fastest to be given championships. You cant win at a fake sport...dumb assess. Being the fastest triple crown champion is like being the last guy to arrive at a gang bang. Get a life marks.

If you stopped watching "this crap" then why are you on a wrestling website.

Also, for a guy/girl who has stopped watching why are you using a term like "mark"?

Oh never mind, you're an idiot and I don't expect any answer from you or at least one that I can understand.

Yeah... Bet Punk is happy he broke a record, bet he's not so happy that he's now joined the relatively small group of wrestlers who have been World Champ, only to be pushed back down to secondary titles... Benoit, Flair etc. Jeff hardy will join the list soon too !

Posted By: UK Rampage (Guest) on January 20, 2009 at 03:31 AM

but a certain member of the mcmahon family with many many h's has been part of this group...so did the 2008 Superstar of the Year...It comes down to where they can put people into spots they work out in. Punk makes money for WWE, regardless of the fact that they were in Chicago last night do you see the number of punk signs in crowds..the cheers he gets...he's gonna be around for awhile and probably get the RVD push...basically sitting right there at the top of the ladder..1 or 2 rungs down but not able to get to the top until just the right moment comes along

Congrats Punk....keep doing what you are doing man. You are awesome!!

Posted By: DCFlash (Guest) on January 20, 2009 at 01:44 AM

Cm gay is probably a better performer than nash but classifying that is a technicality nash is a big ass guy your never going to see him runing around the ring or jumping around , and saying he's better than RVD HAH
well sir you just might be mentally challanged so il be nice, go kill yourself

clearly this makes cp munk one of the greatest of all time a true legend and a hall a famer, so all of you nimrod iwc marks can not bitch about being buried ever ever ever EVER PLEASE GOD EVER MAKES ME SOOOOO ANGRY again

Posted By: ted g (Guest) on January 20, 2009 at 02:29 AM

Semen spunk will NEVER be considered one of the greatest of all time he does not have the talent to do that or the charisma/personality to ever become something of a wwe hall of famer look at the people who moved wwe Steve Austin The Rock hogan hell then look at undertaker and michaels whove been there since the start and still doing it , considering them to him is like saying eating at a 5 star restraunt or eating shit out of a toilet hes is worth nothing

Posted By: The Great Capt. Smooth (Guest) on January 20, 2009 at 10:45 AM

You're right, meant to say he needed to win the IC title for the Grand Slam. My bad, brain fart.

(1) CM Punk only made history if you count from the first time he won a title to now because Kevin Nash a.k.a Diesel did it all in less than 1 year (punk didnt do that). Nash still holds the fastest record in winning the triple crown. (2) the triple crown still means something because they are the 3 most important titles in the company. ok, the 2nd part is an opinion but not the first part.

Posted By: Robert (Guest)  on January 20, 2009 at 08:33 PM

Wrong, Punk debuted in 2006. He's been in WWE for over two and a half years so Nash still holds the record for fastest triple crown winner doing it in less than a year.

Sweet! Nice feat for his legacy.

But when are they gonna let his personality out?

Posted By: Guest#7980 (Guest)  on January 21, 2009 at 12:54 AM

Another interesting fact, every single title punk has won has been on free to air TV
