WWE News: Batista Update, Flair to Induct Steamboat, and Rourke Out of WrestleMania?
Posted by Larry Csonka on 01.29.2009

- Ric Flair will be inducting Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat into the WWE Hall of Fame in April. Steve Austin had requested that Ric Flair induct him into the Hall, but when word got out, Vince McMahon changed plans. [Credit: Pwinsider.com]

- Word is that Batista is now training twice a week at the gym, after recovering from hamstring surgery. While his return date is planned for late June, most expect him to be back in action at Summerslam. [Credit: Pwinsider.com]

- The Associated Press issued the following article this evening:
Mickey Rourke won't rumble with WWE superstar

HOUSTON (AP)
— A spokeswoman for actor Mickey Rourke says he won't be taking his role as a professional wrestler into a real-life ring after all.

Paula Woods told The Associated Press on Wednesday night that Rourke will not wrestle WWE superstar Chris Jericho at Wrestlemania 25 in April at Houston's Reliant Stadium.

Woods wrote in an e-mail that the Oscar-nominated actor "will not be participating in Wrestlemania. He is focusing entirely on his acting career."

Rourke portrays professional wrestler Randy the Ram in the acclaimed movie "The Wrestler." He made a surprise announcement about the wrestling event Sunday night on the red carpet before the Screen Actors Guild Awards in Los Angeles.

Rourke had said he was going to toss Jericho "around the ring like tossed salad."

The best news I've heard in a long, long time. The Dragon deserves it (and should've been in last year).

But the question now is "Who will induct Austin?" Maybe they'll have a fatal four-way at No Way Out to decide!

So I'm guessing JR will induct Austin.

Posted By: Ryan (Guest)  on January 29, 2009 at 12:12 AM

so mickie didn't sign and it wasn't a one shot deal?

Posted By: Mickie (Guest)  on January 29, 2009 at 12:18 AM

So I guess Vince liking the movie was a one shot deal?
Finally, the Dragon in the HOF and awesome that Flair is going to induct him.But who will induct Austin?I've heard Bret Hart but I doubt it.

So he says this now....and then after the Oscars come and go, he can decide to get into the ring? That's called a SWERVE!

Posted By: Devin (Guest)  on January 29, 2009 at 12:18 AM

LOL Rourke played Vince to get free pub for the movie. Anyone wanna lay odds the movie gets buried next Monday on RAW? Vintage punk-out!

Posted By: Guest#3476 (Guest)  on January 29, 2009 at 12:21 AM

I thought Vince keeps himself completely out of the way when it comes to the Hall of Fame.

I hope Austin tells them it's going to be someone innocent like JR or HHH, but it ends up being Randy Savage. And if Terry Funk gets in, nobody other than Mick Foley should do the inducting.

WWE PG FOR KIDZ - Ecccch!

Rourke violated the wellness policy

Linda was planning on cooking a pot roast for dinner last night, but when word got out, Vince McMahon changed plans.

I think Mickey Rourke realized what appearing at wrestlemania might do to his acting career.
Smart move on his part, or the people who talked him out of it.

It is obvious that RVD will induct Austin for the HOF since they were both part of the Alliance.

IT WILL BE a 1-SHOT DEAL.

So I'm guessing JR will induct Austin.

JR is inducting Watts this year.

Is it a work? Is it a swerve? Did Rourke sign with TNA? Tune into next week's Nitro to find out!

I heard that RVD will be inducting himself into the HoF and it will be a one-shot deal.

Mickey Rourke was gonna toss Jericho's salad? Gross.

The Rock should induct Austin. They had the best fueds/matches. And they have a huge level of respect for each other.

ross is suppose to be inducting bill watts.

possible austin inductees:
HHH, HBK, Bret, Rock, Vince.

since vince likes remind people who's the boss. DUSTY RRHODES. the booker who halted austin's rise in wcw.

About damn time. Steamboat should have been inducted at Wrestlemania 23 when they were in Detroit, home of his biggest WWE match ever.

Posted By: Scott B (Registered)  on January 29, 2009 at 01:09 AM

Good for Steamboat, it's LONG over due as he's a true legend and one of the top in-ring performers of all time

I can see McMahon inducting SCSA as he was his greatest rival on-screen although The Rock would be a good choice as well.

Considering it's Texas this year you'd think both the Funk bothers should be a shoe-in but it doesn't look like it's happening and thats a damn shame!!

Posted By: Guest#3439 (Guest)  on January 29, 2009 at 01:31 AM

The Oscars are the week after No Way Out, after the Oscars he will start his plan with Jericho. If Flair is inducting Steamboat and JR is inducting Watts, its either Vince, Rock, Bret or HHH that will induct Austin.

a bunch of has-beens grasping for the lights one more time, sad really, and the Rourke news is the frosting.... suck it boys

It shouldn't even be a question as to weather who will induct Austin into the HOF......McMahon...Vincent Kennedy McMahon...

I would be very surprised if Rourke doesn't appear at Wrestlemania.

I think this is just a way to create some mystery after Rourke basically blew two months of storylines with his two minute red carpet interview.

What kind of garbage is this? Austin cant even have the guy to induct him that he wants? McMahon's excuse is that "word got out" and then its promptly revealed who Flair is gonna induct anyway?

This is crap. Austin should have the right to have whomever he wants to induct him.

Odds are Mickey's handlers (agents) went insane on him. I bet they spent days brow beating him to realize he's up for a fucking Oscar and these type of actors don;t do wrestling matches.

Blame them.

Odds are Vince will run and program Steve Austin/Hulk Hogan now. Make it happen Vince. Save Jericho for a CM Punk IC Program.

This one shot deal is going to be a one shot deal.

Rourke should be in the corner of whoever faces Jericho at Wrestlemania, maybe Evan Bourne. Make sure that Jericho/Bourne is the focus of the match though, rather than Jericho/Rourke. Then Rourke can hit Jericho over the head with his Oscar afterwards (you know he's winning it).

If anyone is smoking anything, it has to be you. The academy people, along with most people, look down on wrestling and wrestlers. Rock had a decent Hollywood career before, but it only seriously took off once he left the ring for good. And notice how he -never- shows up, not even for a quick cameo. It took his family being inducted into the hall of fame to bring him back for just a single night. And if you're trying to say Hogan and Ventura had respectable Hollywood careers, you're insane. Ventura stuck to bit parts in action movies and Hogan took pretty much any piece of crap script thrown his way.

Being involved in Wrestlemania would have pretty much guaranteed Rourke wouldn't win the oscar that he's gunning for.

My guess is Mickey Rourke and the director of The Wrestler just recently found out that Vince originally trashed their movie before doing a complete 180 once it got Oscar nominations for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor. That's the best reason to pull out of Wrestlemania. Why appear at Wrestlemania when Vince wouldn't even allow advertising for The Wrestler to be shown during the commercial breaks in RAW? Vince just got what he had coming to him. Vince isn't as smart as he thinks he is. Case in point: "Stone Cold" Shane McMahon, a non wrestler, single handedly beating up Randy Orton as well as Rhodes and Dibiase. If Vince was in his right mind he would have realized that nobody would believe Shane McMahon could do that. He just killed any credibility the angle had. Looks like this Wrestlemania isn't going to be nearly as interesting as it appeared it would be as recently as Monday night, until the final segment of RAW of course.

Deathpool, you failed to take into account that the role that Rourke is nominated for is about a wrestler - the very type of person you said the academy looks down on. For Rourke to do Wrestlemania after having played a role as a wrestler in a successful makes all the sense in the world. Unfortunately for Vince, his two faced ways have caught up with him again. I don't doubt that somebody told Rourke and the director of The Wrestler the truth about what Vince really thinks about The Wrestler and how he kept advertising for The Wrestler from being shown during RAW until it got nominated for two Oscars.

Posted By: Ole (Guest)  on January 29, 2009 at 08:07 AM

Why in the hell would Rourke even bother to tease that kind of announcement, and THEN go on Larry King Live to plant the seeds further with Jericho, only to pull out?! Doesn't make a lick of fucking sense to me. He should have NEVER opened his mouth in the first place. Now it would seem, Jericho is left without a program for Wrestlemania and Rourke looks like a fool.
The news about Ricky Steamboat is awesome. A true legend in the ring and someone who rarely ever had a bad match. Well deserved!
As for Austin, I agree that Vince McMahon should be the one to induct him. Greatest feud Austin ever had was with Vinnie Mac. It would only be fitting.

WHEN THE HELL IS BOB BACKLUND GOING TO GET IN THE HOF? HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN YEARS AGO. LIKE SANMARTINO!!

Posted By: BURP! (Guest)  on January 29, 2009 at 08:17 AM

It's a work. This will give Jericho the chance to play the heel by calling him out on backing out. He'll go out there weeks on end calling him a coward, a has been, and a never was till Rourke shows up at NWO to confront him.

Posted By: Guest#4498 (Guest)  on January 29, 2009 at 09:16 AM

Rourke is an idiot. If he didn't want to wrestle @ Wrestlemania, that's fine. However, he went into the angle (by joshing some with Jericho) and then backed out. That's ten times worse than not doing it at all. Who will primarily be buying his movie once it hits DVD? Wrestling fans. He just lost a bunch of sales. He was lucky enough to be nominated. While I do blame his agents for sure (cause I'm positive they got in his head), I place this squarely on Rourke. May he choke on his nomination and go back to being a has-been. (on a side note, a little part of me does hope that this is just part of a bigger angle where Jericho taunts him and taunts him until 2 weeks before WM where Rourke attacks him and the match is on from there)

Posted By: Kedrix (Guest)  on January 29, 2009 at 08:34 AM

I agree with graves...should be Hart inducting Austin.

Smart of Rourke to brush this off before the Oscars. Considering those Hollywood snobs, a definite WM angle wouldn't bode well for his chances of winning. In the mean time Jericho can parody Rourke's career until after the Oscars when Rourke can hedge his bets. Where does this leave Jericho at WM if Rourke doesn't show? Kofi Kingston is always in need of a beatdown.

"Woods wrote in an e-mail that the Oscar-nominated actor "will not be participating in Wrestlemania. He is focusing entirely on his acting career."

Excellent choice . . . glad to see somebody finally smartened Mickey up. Oscar-nominated actors do NOT belong as "special attractions" at on a freaking wrestling card for fuck's sake.

I called it after the Larry King he wasn't going to do it, to bad it makes jericho look like an Asshole playing Kayfabe in the interview.

I bet Vince will pull all the wrestler shit now.

paul heyman to induct austin ?

Posted By: nethdogg (Guest)  on January 29, 2009 at 09:05 AM

I thought Rourke's first comments seemed kind of odd. I bet he agreed to the deal, but WWE hadn't written out how they wanted it to go down yet. Not realizing how wrestling storylines work out, Rourke figured he'd start promoting it right away, and let it slip in those initial interviews. RAW had to have some kind of follow up, but it left everyone kind of scrambling.

Posted By: Dwayne (Guest)  on January 29, 2009 at 10:15 AM

Wrestlemania would be Mickey Rourke's Norbit. He was probably high when he called out Jericho. For the dumbasses who think the Wrestlemania exposure would HELP his career, why don't you ask Mayweather, Trump, Snoop, and that chick from Destiny's Child about it. I'm sure people still tell them all the time "Snoop! you were great at Wrestlemania last year!" And he'd be all like "Shit! I was a Wrestlemania last year?"

Look at what wrestling did for K-fed for god sakes

I can't believe it: nothing but GOOD news!

Posted By: KanyonKreist (Guest)  on January 29, 2009 at 10:17 AM

If the storyline gets completely dropped, then the Rourke/Jericho angle is truly dead.

However, if Jericho starts to really bag on him for pulling out, expect him to run him down for a few weeks, Rourke gets tired of it, shows up at an event, clocks Y2J, and then the match will be on again.

Posted By: hg dragon (Guest)  on January 29, 2009 at 10:39 AM

My guess is that Rourcke's agent told him that he is a Hollywood darling right now, and going ahead with a "match" at Wrestlemania would kill what momentum he has as far as obtaining future roles. You have to face the facts that wrestling is considered low brow entertainment and nothing that Vince or anyone else will do can change that perception.

In my opinion, both Rourke and Jericho are better off this way. Rourke can continue to be the "hot thing" in LA and Jericho can get a real opponent for 'Mania.

Posted By: epic50 (Guest)  on January 29, 2009 at 10:45 AM

Rourke will go to Wrestlemania to fight Jericho. I just think that they didn't want the news to get out so fast so by saying he won't show will get some of the heat to die down for a while. After No Way Out the heat will build up again.

Finally! Another one of my heroes gets his long overdue induction! Yeah, baby! Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat is one of my all time favourites! Like I said, this is loooooong overdue! Who knows, maybe we'll get a glimpse of young Ricky Steamboat Jr.?

As for Austin, have JR or Bret Hart do it? Flair should induct The Dragon, for the sole reason that their matches were pretty damn good! As much as I love the Wrestlemania III match where Ricky beat Macho Man for the IC belt, Savage inducting Ricky wouldn't even be a close to a possibility...Honky Tonk Man?...nah! Best to stick with Flair!

Really not great examples.... Rourke is more renowned then all of them combined. Wrestling doesn't ruin acting careers nor does it enhance them in anyway.

I get the whole idea behind Vinve inducting himself, but if it isn't the Rock, Bret, DDP (who has always been one of his good friends in the biz), or JR, it should be Shane-O-Mac. He took the stunner like nobody before or since. Other people crumpled where Shane's sell is the legendary stuff that you can only wish for. I vote for Shane.

DAMN THE STUPID MEDIA!

Rourke would have done the show for sure if the media didn't put it into everyone's heads that doing the show would ruin his Oscar chances.

What a shame, because that would have been the BEST celebrity vs. wrestler match ever.

Hopefully he will win the Oscar and then go to Mania anyways! Like the above poster said...SWERVE!!!

Is it just me or do I want Cena to lose @ No Way Out? Not because I don't like Cena or am a Cena hater. I enjoy the guy but this then sets up for Austin Vs. Cena which would get just as many buys if not dare i say more than Hogan Vs. Austin just for the fact the match would be 500 times better ring wise with Austin Vs. Cena. It's the new-age Rock Vs. Hogan. idk. Call me crazy but that's my opinion

So, if this is true about Mickey not wrestling Jerico at WM, then Jerico's chances of winning the title at No Way Out, just went from slim to 16.6% chance.

I'm guessing that Rourke learned enough about the business that this all part of the work for the mania match... Jericho will come out and talk about how chicken he is and Rourke will "change his mind"

Captn took the words out of my mouth. Mickey wrestling at WrestleMania would be EXACTLY like norbit was to Eddie Murphy. Bye Bye career.

Has anyone who posted that Mickey Rourke shouldn't be part of Wrestlemania because The Academy supposedly hates professional wrestling ever stopped to think that the movie they nominated Rourke for Best Actor in is about a professional wrestler?

Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat & Stone Cold Steve Austin! Great! Another one of my favourites that is overdue to be inducted is Bob Backlund...please let this be the year that he gets in! Have Iron Sheik or Superstar Billy Graham induct him...make it happen Vince, for pity's sake, make it happen!
