411’s Ring of Honor on HDNet Report 3.28.09: Episode II - McGuinness vs. Briscoe
Posted by Larry Csonka on 03.28.2009

411's Ring of Honor on HDNet Report 3.28.09

  • As a reminder, this is the barebones report. I will do play by play and results, that is all. JD Dunn will be back with his breakdown of the show, with the wacky hi-jinks and star ratings.

-We get a "previously on ROH on HDNet" segment to kick off the show.

-Dave Prazak and Mike Hogewood welcome us to this week's show from the HDNet studios. They hype the main event, and then shoot us to the ring for the opener.

-First is a smacktalk, with the GREATNESS of Larry Sweeney speaking for Edwards. One follows for Steen, vowing revenge on Sweeney and his goons taking out his tag team partner El Generico.

    VS. w/
Kevin Steen vs. Eddie Edwards w/Larry Sweeney

Kevin Steen is one half of the ROH World Tag Team Champions, for those that don't know. Steen refuses to shake hands with Edwards. Lock up, to the corner and no clean break as they shoot off the ropes and collide. Again and Steen doesn't move. BITCH SLAP to Edwards and a shoulder block follows. Snot rocket, drop toehold and then the front flipping leg drop by Steen. Snap mare and the elbow to the back of the head gets 2 for Steen. Chops follow, a boot by Steen but Edwards gets a back suplex into a flapjack and covers for 2. Edwards uses some my boot to your face style and then follows with chops in the corner. Forearms by Steen, but Edwards chokes him out in the corner. Off the ropes and a back elbow by Edwards, kick the back and then a cover for 2. Edwards works the chinlock, tries to rip his nose off and then sends Steen to the corner and connects with a boot to the face. Edwards chokes Steen out in the ropes,, which allows a cheap shot from Sweeney. Edwards with kicks to the face, stands n the chest of Steen and then follows with a snap mare and a chinlock/half nelson combo. Steen escapes, only to eat a dropkick, which gets Edwards 2. Steen tries to fight to his feet, forearms to Edwards, but Edwards back with a knee and chops. TO the corner, reversal and a boot to Steen, stops another and kicks the ropes into the balls of Edwards. Atomic drop and overhead belly to belly follows for Steen. CORNER CANNONBALL by Steen gets 2! A slam by Steen, he goes up top, Sweeney calls him Canadian Bacon, Steen flies with the senton, but Edwards gets the knees up! Steen up top, eats an Enziguri, backpack chin breaker by Edwards gets a close 2! Edwards charges, corner forearm smash, but eats a superkick. Powerbomb by Steen! Package Piledriver connects! 1…2…3! Larry Sweeney does not approve.

Winner: Kevin Steen @ 7:54 via pin

-Kyle Durden is backstage with Nigel McGuinness, and hypes his debut to the world on HDNet. McGuinness says he needs no introduction, because he is the ROH World Champion, so he is THE MAN to beat. Everyone has failed, and Jay Briscoe, "Sunshine", you're no different. He vows to kill Briscoe if he doesn't bring his "A-GAME." McGuinness doesn't even need a knife or a sledgehammer.

-We get smacktalk for the Daizee Haze vs. Sara Del Rey match. Sweeney says there are a lot of girls in ROH, but only one women, Sara Del Rey.

    VS. w/
Daizee Haze vs. Sara Del Rey w/Larry Sweeney

They shake and here we go. Haze uses her speed to avoid Del Rey, go behind and Del Rey takes her to the corner and lays in the ass rams. Sets Haze up top and tosses her off. Seated senton by Del Rey gets 2. Haze slips out of a slam, works the arm and runs up the ropes for the lucha arm drag. Head scissors follows and then boots to Del Rey. To the corner, Haze flies in, comes up short, caught and into a suplex and cover for 2. Minor slip there. Del Rey grabs the hair, rights by Haze, but Del Rey with a head butt takes her down. Side back breaker by Del Rey gets 2. Forearms to the back by Del Rey, boots follow and then a forearms takes Haze down. Haze tries to fight back from the mat, but Del Rey just beats her down. Del Rey works a half necktie and then pulls Haze across her back in a torture rack. Haze escapes, HEART PUNCH…YAKUZA BY HAZE! Tilt a whirl into a cover by Haze gets 2. A backslide for 2. Tries another, they battle for position, Gory special now by Del Rey, Haze flips over, but eats a big boot and flies to the corner. Del Rey whips her to the corner, misses a charge, and Haze gets a face buster out of the corner for a close 2. CAPO KICK by Del Rey! Royal Butterfly try, LANDS IT! 1…2…3. Sweeney has something to be happy about.

Winner: Sarah Del Rey @ 5:30 via pin

-Back to Kyle Durden with Mark and Jay Briscoe. The discuss Mark's injury and Jay says it is all-good, WHAT UP AMERICA? They introduce themselves as the best tag team in the world, and says that they are the top of the list. Jay says Nigel need to MAN UP DAWG because he's going to bring it. Mark reiterates their MAN UP mantra.

-HDNet commercial time, which is ROHWrestling.com stuff and other HDNet programming.

-Kyle Durden is backstage with PRINCE NANA! Nana calls him a peasant, and says he is back where he belongs. He says Bison Smith is the truth, and everyone needs to look out!

-Smacktalk for Claudio Castagnoli vs. "Sugarfoot" Alex Payne.

    VS.
Claudio Castagnoli vs. "Sugarfoot" Alex Payne

They shake hands, and here we go. Castagnoli's very European you know. Lock up and Castagnoli with a slam, Payne rolls into a cover for 2. Off the ropes, sunset flip try by Payne fails as Castagnoli picks him up and lands the uppercut. Side headlock by Castagnoli, off the ropes and a shoulder block by Castagnoli. Hip toss countered by Payne, head scissors follows. Tries a victory roll, and gets it for 2. Castagnoli swats a dropkick away, and then catches Payne with a back breaker for 2. They seem off early. Castagnoli lays the boots to Payne, chokes him out, and a gut wrench suplex by Castagnoli gets 2. Payne counters a slam, gets a roll up for 2. Bicycle kick by Castagnoli KILLS Payne. Castagnoli covers for 2 again. Clubbing shots to the back by Castagnoli, uppercuts level Payne and then a slam by Castagnoli gets 2. A snap mare by Castagnoli, into the neck crank, but Payne keeps fighting back. Into the headlock, Payne fights to his feet, gets a few dropkicks, off the ropes and another dropkick takes Castagnoli down. Corner attack to Castagnoli, a whip, reversal and Castagnoli misses the charge. A Bulldog off the ropes by Payne, the leg lariat follows and a cover for 2. Payne off the ropes, gets tossed into the air, SICK uppercuts kills Payne. The Ricolla Bomb puts him away.

I get what they were trying to do, but damn, no one cared about Alex Payne.

Winner: Claudio Castagnoli @ 6:24 via pin

-We get a tale of the tape for Nigel McGuinness © vs. Jay Briscoe.

    VS. w/
Non- Title Match: Nigel McGuinness © vs. Jay Briscoe w/Mark Briscoe

Lock up to begin, Jay with counters and a roll through, but McGuinness controls. Jay kips up, but McGuinness drags him back down with the wristlock. Split crowd early in the match as McGuinness controls the arm, now grabs another, but Jay escapes, slaps on the half crab, but McGuinness gets the ropes. Headlocks, and counters out by both men, Jay now with a side headlock, McGuinness to his feet and gets a belly to back suplex, but Jay holds on. McGuinness up again, Jay flips out, and then back into the side headlock. McGuinness spins out, grabs a headlock of his own, but Jay escapes and goes right back to the headlock. To the feet, off the ropes and a shoulder block by Jay takes McGuinness down. Off the ropes and much of the same. Off the ropes again, but McGuinness grabs the arm and slams it to the mat and now takes control. Off the ropes, and Jay manages a leg lariat and cover for 2. Unfortunately for him, McGuinness goes right back to the arm and takes the control back. McGuinness wraps the arm in the ropes and tortures Jay a bit, they trade forearm strikes, knee to the gut by McGuinness and then a kick to the face. Off the ropes and a hammerlock DDT by McGuinness takes Jay back down. McGuinness with the knuckle lock and takedown on Jay, short kicks to the head by McGuinness and Jay fires back with rights and chops. McGuinness grabs the knuckle lock and suplexes Jay with the bad arm, that was nice. McGuinness now works the arm submission, but Jay quickly into the ropes. McGuinness now applies the million dollar dream, takes Jay down to the mat, Jay makes it back to his feet, McGuinness misses a lariat and Jay levels him with the big boot. Chops by Jay, a whip to the corner, clothesline by Jay. A spinebuster follows and Jay slowly covers for 2. Forearms by Jay, misses a charge and McGuinness is able to slam him down and cover for 2. McGuinness sets for the tower of London, Jay escapes and gets the YAKUZA! Running Death Valley Driver by Jay! 1…2..NO! Jay goes up top, McGuinness up and crotches Jay. McGuinness up with Jay, they battle, rights by Jay and McGuinness is down! Jay lands the Delaware Jam off of the top rope and covers for a close 2. Jay driller is a no go as McGuinness double legs him, off the ropes, the knock heads, McGuinness bounces back and off the ropes (gets caught a bit) and the jawbreaker lariat by McGuinness gets the win.

Winner: Nigel McGuinness @ 12:10 via pin

-Nigel gives Jay a handshake after the match as Mark checks on his brother.

-Next week it is Bryan Danielson vs. Austin Aries in the main event.

  • That's all for the debut of ROH on HDNet. Stay tuned for the Tuesday edition of the R's, where I will break down the show.

    Good show tonight.

Nigel v Jay is the free tv match of the year. Better than Swagger v Christian. But I'm guessing Dragon v Aries next week will be even better.

    1) Nigel directly quoted LOCK, STOCK AND 2 SMOKING BARRELS with the "I'll kill ya" stuff, which is cool beyond belief to me. I've watched that movie at least a dozen times. It begat Snatch and a couple other Guy Ritchie movies before he married Madonna and became completely useless. AWESOME FUCKING PROMO.

    2) The undercard was fairly weak, the main event was awesome, but I still think the new fans of ROH will have to wait til next week to get a true taste of what ROH wrestling is all about. Danielson vs. Aries. Nothing but steak right there.

    3) I don't speak troll, and I'm hoping the rest of you will do the same.

    Nice show.

I think it's really pathetic that people would want other promotions to fail, like the WWE somehow "wins" if the whole industry goes out of business. Everyone please keep in mind that you don't win a prize if ROH or TNA go out of business, but wrestling loses overall visibility to the public. Less wrestling companies = less people training to be wrestlers = worse wrestling. Then again, why am I trying to explain this to children?

Posted By: Andy (Guest)  on March 28, 2009 at 10:37 PM

This was not as good as last weeks IMO. However, I still got to see more wrestling and better wrestling than I do on the other shows. I do want all the companies to do well and anyone who wants one to fail is stupid.

Here's a crazy idea: If you don't like ROH, don't comment in a recap of one of their shows. Better yet, why not give the promotion a chance since they are a breeding ground for future stars in the business.

Newsflash dickwads: All of your favorite current WWE stars were on the independent scene at some point in their career. They weren't superstars from the first moment they put on wrestling tights. So dissing the guys in ROH because they perform to much smaller crowds than WWE is a bit ridiculous. That would be like making fun of a local musician who is very good just because he hasn't gone platinum and toured the world.

I'm not a ROHbot and I'm actually a very big WWE fan, but I think that ROH is a great promotion for showcasing the stars of tomorrow. Hating ROH is the equivalent of hating an independent movie just because it doesn't have the big budget that a summer blockbuster might have. Obviously ROH will never have the budget that WWE has, but that doesn't mean that their product isn't a great one.

So can all you ROH haters please either stop leaving ridiculous comments or give the promotion a chance. Because leaving comments on a show that you don't like reeks of loserness. I'm just sayin...

The E guys just can't handle getting smoked by an hour long show on a noname network. It's easy to be an E fanboy when its the e vs tna, but it's a tough load to swallow when you have to compare the grand E roster vs vanilla midgets...

Yo, just to inform, I was at these tapings, and if you thought tonights main event was nice... just wait!!!

Aries, Dragon (and all the Dragon Boners)... minus THE FINAL COUNTDOWN... although the fans really stepped up to sing it. Great, Great Moment!!

i cant get hdnet on comcast but it looks like im not missing much..... first off since there on TV they should try to get a better looking, like most these guys look so indie. Sugar fott looks liek a cheap indie wrestler. Kevin Steen is good in the stuff i seen him in but from that picture i just seen he looks like someone off the early 90's local gym wrestling that owns the deli down the street.... they just need to get there product looking more star worthy and put a little in to production work.. the wrestler and the production look decent on there DVD's and the atomphere is great to, but there not translating it on the tv show.... put your top matches get the peoples attention then advertise your mid cards and storylines

Last week was better, but this week was cool. I don't get why all the kids come in here and talk all this shit on ROH like it makes you cool or something. Newsflash virgins, your opinions are worthless and what you think isn't going to influence one person reading this comment section not to watch it. As a matter of fact, your just entertainment for the mentally stable to point and laugh at.

the moment will be lost unless the HDnet production guys start recording the crowd noise better. one of the best things about ROH is the hot crowd, and these tv shows just aren't capturing it. sure, they could do a WWE and just pipe in fake noise, but that's just dishonest.

ROH!ROH! Why cant you jokers get over the fact theres GOOD wrestling somewhere other than the E? Nigel vs. Jay free TV match of the year. HA! I'm a pretty big ROH fan, I watched the show (at my pissed off girlfriend's house. The entire show "UGH! THIS IS THE LONGEST MATCH EVER! WHY CANT THE ENGLISH GUY JUST WIN ALREADY!?") and that match was NOT the free TV match of the year in my eyes. Granted, I probably couldn't point out anything better, but that certainly couldn't be it.

It's hard to get into the show right now. If I wasn't already a fan of ROH, I probably wouldn't like it so far. I'm well aware they want it to be "ROH 101" and be an intro to fans, but there's nothing for me to sink my teeth into as far as "I LOVE that guy's gimmick" or "I LOVE that guy's in ring work". I'll still watch as much as I can, because I want to support ROH, but I can see why there would be valid criticisms about these HDNet shows. Not douchebags trying to be insulting, but constructive criticism.

It's also weird to see ROH in such damn good video quality. I think I could get used to it though!

You know, I think this show had more wrestling in one hour than the other FOUR wrestling shows (you know, the BIG promotions) this week...God bless, there is going to be six shows a week to watch soon with Superstars coming back...

And who says the business is slumping? We're almost at the point we were 10 years ago, folks...the business works in cycles...

And this is why the rest of the IWC laugh at WWE trolls.

Spot monkeys? Vanilla Midget? How about you sit back and try to form your own opinions? You don't know this but it is possible to tell a story and have high spots in a match. Shocking I know. Also this will shock you even mre but a lot of the talent are technical wrestlers rather than the high flying guys that people have told you they are.

"The funniest thing is Joe is the longest runnning champ lmao!"

Lmao, indeed! That IS the funniest thing as it' not even true! LMAO!!!!

"Wait, thats what Sara Del Rey looks like.... The way everyone talks about her she is hot or something, *shivers* "

She used to look hot before she figured wearing make up, never smiling and trying not to blink makes a good heel character.

"Nigel v Jay is the free tv match of the year. Better than Swagger v Christian. But I'm guessing Dragon v Aries next week will be even better."

Okay, I like the work ROH does and all, but that's your free TV match of the year? Really? Although it was good, don't get ahead of yourself over a 12 minute match that lacked true psychology, selling and had a plodding beginning. That screams fanboy.

In other words, we only have WWE v2002 all over again. And nobody wants that.

For the record, CM Punk did pin Batista, Edge, and JBL during his time as World Champion.. WORLD Champion.

Good show, Nigel pulling a Rory Braker promo was sweet and the match with Jay was solid, gotta get Lenny back on commentry though.

WWEtards can hate all they want but you're not gonna find a better hour of WRESTLING anywhere, having said that I want all 3 promotions to do well because at the end of the day the fans are the ones who win.

"Monkeys" unless Mickey Dolenz just hit a corkscrew plancha.

    First, best comment in history..
Second, remember Boy Meets World? The episodes where the monkees and Vader where on? I was always expecting a mania match to come out of that.

What's with all the flaming? Do you guys know nothing about pro wrestling. Ring of Honor is an awesome promotion with great talent. Get a grip.

"What a joke of a promotion. This is why WWE fans laugh at Rohbnots. A bunch of spot monkeys and vanilla midgets. The funniest thing is Joe is the longest runnning champ lmao! The crowd could have cared less" - Groot

Ummm...Groot is it? Sounds like someone lost a bet. I'm a WWE fan and I appreciate the ROH product. I had a chance to see a live card in Orlando last year prior to WM and I have to say they were some very good matches. Were there a lot of high spots? To quote one of your icons, "Oh Hell Yeah!" That was something I was not able to see in the other promotions and THAT was one of the major things for me that made me want to see them again. Next time, just speak for yourself.

The undercard was pretty weak, but Nigel and Jay did have a great main event. Steen and Edwards are pretty uninteresting. I've never been a fan of Daziee Haze. Claudio is freakin' great no matter what though. I'm looking forward to Dragon and Ares next week!

"C.M Punk can't beat JBL but dominated this rinky dink promotion lol!"

OK "Groot." I see now that the issue is you are a total moron. That explains it all.

CM PUNK is the only person ever to win the triple crown in less than a year in the WWF/WWE. Wanna rethink your dumb shit statement?

As I recall, Ric Flair dropped the title to Ronnie Garvin. I guess that makes the NWA/WCW a joke too. For that matter Ric pretty much sux balls too, huh?

Dudes! You seriously need to ignore this "Groot" guy.

He is just a 411 troll.

He never even watched the show(or ANY ROH)

    Look at his posts:
He spent his entire saturday night posting comments on 411!!

He posted once, then 5 minutes later he posted AGAIN!

Then he went and jerked off to some type of barnyard porn, came back to 411 an hour later and POSTED AGAIN!!!

If spending all of your saturday night posting hater comments on 411 is not the definition of "TROLL", I don't know what is.

The WWE also has Three World Titles so any accomplishment CM Punk has made is irrelevant. That goes for Triple H getting more than 16 World Titles.

After finally watching the 2nd episode online (sorry i don't get HDNet), my honest opinion about it is that if you want to get a true sense of what ROH is all about, you're better off buying DVDs.

I have no complaints about the wrestling as it's some of the best you can get on free television. The performances were great this week as they were last week. My real gripe is the overall presentation of the show.

While I know a lot of fans are geeked at the production value, I have to say that the show almost looks too clean. The crane cam, the dimly lit Arena, the concave camera and lack of ONE SINGLE FRIGGIN HARD CAMERA LONG SHOT(!) comes off as harsh on the eyes. I honestly have to re-adjust my eyes to the real world after watching this circular-motion-captured wrestling show. There comes a point where too much production makes the show feel unnatural. The prepackaged interviews, the "disheveled" interview set (you have a whole building at your disposal, use it), the intro with the announcers standing in front of a green screen--you get the feeling that you're not watching an event, you're watching an editing project.

Who's supposed to be getting over the wrestlers or the ref? Why is the referee mic'ed?

The lack of storyline also hurts the quality of the show in my opinion. While the wrestling is good to look at, there's nothing for me to get emotionally invested in. My very first taste of the original ECW was in late 1997. It was a regular episode and I immediately got pulled into the storylines. No 101 course on who the characters were, lets just get right into it. My point is, you don't need weeks and weeks of introduction. Let the storylines play out. Explain what's going on while its happening, but give the fans something to immediately get invested in. That's the job of the announcers...

Speaking of announcers, I'm sorry but anyone saying that Mike Hodgewood is better than Don West must be seriously anti anything TNA. Not that Hodgewood is bad, but he gets very loud for no reason, much like early Don West. I can imagine that he'll improve on that, but right now it's annoying. Also the fact that he's so vanilla doesn't help. As underground and hard nose as ROH is, Hodgewood sounds so fluff by comparison that it makes the whole perception of this company feel like Saturday morning cartoons. And there's a lack of chemistry between the combination of Hodgewood and Prazak. That could be due to the fact that Hodgewood is so green or the fact that there is little storyline to banter back and forth about. Either way, the combination lacks something.

The overall quality of this program i.m.h.o.

B- (because despite the good wrestling, the presentation and lack of storyilne offers nothing appealing; hopefully things improve)

ROH!ROH! Why cant you jokers get over the fact theres GOOD wrestling somewhere other than the E?
Posted By: Guest#5358 (Guest) on March 29, 2009 at 02:51 AM

It seems as if they're more upset that there's other wrestling promotions in general.

it seems like Hogewood really regressed this week after being decent in the debut. in a couple of the matches he seemed to just let Prazzak do PBP and just chipped in with his "that hurt" comments.
