From Philadelphia, Pa.
Your hosts are Mike Hogewood and Dave Prazak.
We get a "previously on ROH" clip like it's Dynasty or something.
Kevin Steen vs. Eddie Edwards (w/Larry Sweeney).
Sweeney is -- let's just call him intense during the prematch promo. Steen is let's just call him reluctant to shake hands. Edwards has adopted his partner, Davey Richards, attire now, but he's still channeling Chris Benoit (in a good way, not the murderous way). Edwards tries shoulderblocks, but the zaftig Steen doesn't budge. Steen unleashes THE BITCHSLAP to put an end to smacktalk. Shoulderblock and SNOTTLE ROCKET by Steen. Edwards hits a back elbow and settles into the chinlock. He rips at Steen's nose, and Hogewood is shocked, SHOCKED I SAY, that Edwards would stoop to such a level. Steen reverses a whip and kicks the middle rope into Edwards' balls. An atomic drop sets up the Gargoyle Suplex. Ladies and gentlemen, can I please have your attention. I've just been handed an urgent and horrifying news story. I need all of you, to stop what you're doing and listen. CANNONBALL! Edwards gets the knees up to block the flipping senton. Enzuigiri by Edwards sets up the backpack stunner. Edwards charges right into a superkick. Steen powerbombs him and finishes with the Packaged Piledriver at 7:55. Steen toned things down quite a bit personality-wise, which is fine by me because he takes some getting used to. I also like how, so far at least, they're going back to all their basic moves to acclimate new viewers to their movesets. **1/4
Kyle Durden interviews Nigel McGuinness who goes all "Rory Breaker" on us in his pre-match promo. If you don't know what that means, get better taste in movies.
Sara Del Rey (w/Larry Sweeney) vs. Daizee Haze.
I like how they label Daizee the "plucky underdog," as if her tiny frame and happy music don't indicate that. Daizee uses her speed to avoid Del Rey early, but Del Rey uses her rather sizable hip advantage to squash Daizee in the corner. She super snapmares Daizee off the top. Haze slips out of a slam and runs up the ropes into an armdrag. She slips off the ropes off a bodypress attempt, but Del Rey hits a fallaway into a bridge. You know, they could have edited that. Del Rey gets two and starts in on her back. The Cutthroat Rack puts more pressure on Daizee's back. Daizee slips out and hits the Heart Punch. FLYING YAKUZA KICK! Del Rey goes for a tilt-o-whirl, but Daizee lands on her for two. Daizee gets a facebuster, but Del Rey hits a Kappou Kick to put her down. That sets up the Royal Butterfly at 5:30. Some sloppy spots weighed this down, but they also worked in some great stuff that only Beth Phoenix seems to try in the WWE. With TNA poaching most of SHIMMER, I'm not sure how much impact the "Women of Honor" will have on ROH TV. **
The Briscoes show off the fine dentistry of the State of Delaware and tell Nigel he better MAN UP! Nice to hear them work in "sumbitch," which went out of vogue after Steve Austin left wrestling.
Prince Nana has returned, and he will unleash Bison Smith on ROH. Can JIMMEE RAVE, THE CROWN JOO-ELL be far behind?
Claudio Castagnoli vs. Alex "Sugarfoot" Payne.
Sadly, Sweeney is not there to call him "Sugartits." Payne didn't really look ready for primetime in this. Cah-stag-nolly, as Hogewood calls him, takes him down and blocks his sunset flip attempt. Payne gets a number of rollups, but that's about it. Claudio DRILLS him with the Bicycle Kick. FUCK ALL ARMENIAN! Payne hits a few dropkicks, and Claudio misses a charge. A European Uppercut puts Payne out, though, and the Ricolabomb finishes at 6:20. Extended squash for Claudio. Payne is okay, but he probably shouldn't be getting this much offense in on an upper midcard guy. *1/4
Non-Title: Nigel McGuinness vs. Jay Briscoe (w/Mark Briscoe).
Nigel schools Jay on the mat early as the crowd is divided 50/50. Finally, Jay escapes and hits a shoulderblock. Nigel zeroes in on Jay's arm. Jay fights back with a leg lariat, but Nigel is singularly minded. Jay slugs back, but Nigel Hammerlock DDTs him. Jay fires back with his good arm, but Nigel tosses him overhead with a wristlock. Nigel goes for the kill, but Jay is in the ropes. Nigel grabs the shinni no make. Jay hulks up and avoids a lariat. A boot by Jay sets up the spinebuster. He misses a charge, and Nigel goes for the Tower of London. Jay escapes and nails him with the Yakuza. That sets up a Death Valley Driver. ONE, TWO, THRE-NO! McGuinness catches him going up, and they fight on top. Jay shoves him off and hits the flying guillotine legdrop! ONE, TWO, THRE-NO! Nigel blocks the Jaydriller, and they knock heads as both guys lose track of one another. Nigel falls backwards but rebounds with the JAWBREAKER LARIAT at 12:13. Good character psychology here as Jay is, perhaps not surprisingly, not the greatest strategist. Nigel, on the other hand, had one goal in mind, and that was to work the arm. It paid off as Jay's offense was limited down the stretch and he was open to the lariat. **3/4
The 411: Another solid show, although nothing special. They're really only paying lip service to the feuds in ROH, and that might be by design. They seem to be focusing on introducing the major players before throwing out any major angles. Where these guys come from is a major part of their characterization, though, and we're not quite getting that. Trimming a few minutes of wrestling in favor of another video package or two would go a long way toward introducing these guys.

When are we going to start getting Ratings Updates for ROH shows. I can't wait to see the numbers.

"When are we going to start getting Ratings Updates for ROH shows. I can't wait to see the numbers."
Probably not in the near future. I don't think HDNet even releases that kind of information. Like HBO and Showtime, they're probably more concerned with subscribers than Nielsen ratings.

Yeah Larry Sweeney sure did look..."intense." I was thinking more like coked up out of his mind. Like, Hogan and Savage in the 80s coked up. I hate to sling shit like that, but come on Larry. And did I just dream this or did I read somewhere that he had fallen out of favor with ROH management lately? Again, I hate to spread shit like that but it looked really obvious.
Also think it's funny that you said Eddie Edwards is channeling Benoit, since I think Davey Richards is a dead ringer for Dynamite Kid. They need to get Davey's ass on TV pronto, I think he's got nearly as much upside as Tyler Black.

Thanks for reviewing the HDNet show J.D. Good work, as always. Now then, when are we going to see the reviews of All Star Extravaganza IV and Final Battle 2008?

The matches were alright, but I hope that they start having storylines on the show, matches like Claudio v Sugartits are boring without any context.
Nana is money, though. I can't wait for the new Embassy to start showing up on TV.

Actually, he's dealing with a bipolar episode right now. It's the third attack he's had since he was diagonsed with it at 18. Had no idea, hope he gets better.

but even with TNA poaching most of the women in SHIMMER ROH still has managed to get 3 of the best wrestlers they had in SHIMMER, the only really good one TNA managed to get was Awesome Kong and shes been pretty pissed off with TNA lately so if ROH casn just give her a better deal then what TNA has (which is not much) then they can take away TNA's best female wrestler.
Posted By: Ryan (Guest) on March 29, 2009 at 03:12 PM
Really? Well now I feel like a total jackass.

What a joke. Instead of recapping Raw you're recapping this shit. No talent lazy losers that have about 75 fans total.

She may be unhappy but I don't see Roh paying more for her than TNA. Plus why would you leave a promotion that gets 2 million viewers for a promotion that's on a network that very very few people have?

An Internet wrestling fan discussing a tiny Indy wrestling show and name-dropping the Dynamite Kid. I think this post may be the perfect storm of IWC Conceit.

I'm amazed people are shitting on the Castagnoli/Payne match. It was actually a lot better than the Steen/Edwards match. The no-selling of the kicks at the end between Steen and Edwards was just really sad and annoying. Payne and Castagnoli at least told a good David/Goliath story. It wasn't anywhere near as flashy which is why I'm assuming people didn't like it. More akin to '80s NWA than the spotiness of the Steen/Edwards match.

The ratings won't be impressive, but will increase week by week. As more ppl scan, watch, and then tivo. I had non-fans interested because they felt the matches weren't nearly as scripted while watching this weeks show.
So, Groot! I will be a disciple for ROH.. everyday will be more and more rohbots!!! Since you've commented there are 80....81..... 82.... and counting dipshit!!!
I think I might have ROH parties, kick it retro-nitro party style!!! ok, maybe not the best idea, but its another reason to get all shitfaced drunk on saturday...
ANYONE who DVR/TIVO'ed all 5 programs this week?? Which was the best??
1.. SD followed by 2.. ROH and close 3.. Raw

Things that seem to have passed uncommented on.
Nigel McGuiness... can nobody lipread? Cos I could have sworn he tells the fans to go forth and multiply on the main event preview screen.
Ride of the Valkyries? I mean it's not subject to copyright but can anyone watch Del Ray entering the ring without thinking of either a) Apache helicopters over Vietnam or b) Elmer Fudd in a viking helmet?
Classical music, however, is a perfect fit for Claudio, who is very European.
Hogewood made his first Adamles this week, calling the already very European Claudio "a Swede" and mistaking the Jawbreaker Lariat for two moves. The very European Claudio is already German-Italian-Swiss already ferchrissakes.
With Sweeney's picture in picture promo, ROH felt even MORE like Superstars from about 1986. It even had a sorta squash.
Isn't Mickey Dolenz's corckscrew moonsault the Last Train To Clarksville?
Fun game to make you less annoyed with trolls. Replace ROH with any band you like (I use Sonic Youth) and WWE with Miley Cyrus. Try it.

I would have like to see Nigel win with the Tower of London, just to come full circle with the arm work. But it was a very enjoyable main event.
Nana was gold, and Sweeney overdid it a tad.
Also, Hogewood's reaction to Edwards going for the nose was AWESOME. He marks out like no other.
And it was good to see the crowd get vocal for the main event.
Here's to hoping that Danielson/Areis gets 18 - 20 minutes.

I wasn't impressed with ROH's 2nd show on HDNet. For all the marking out the IWC does over Sara Del Rey, she wasn't that impressive. Castagnoli and McGuiness seem to have some potential, but I think they may be too old to get picked up by any of the bigger feds like TNA or WWE.
Posted By: Paisa el Toro (Guest) on March 30, 2009 at 11:28 AM
Groot and people like him, are we gonna go through this every week.
I'm all for opinions but what are the chances you even saw the show? Now if you watched it and didn't like it, I'll take back my comment. If not then fuck you.

TNA do still have Melissa and Nikki Roxx too, who are possibly the two most popular wrestlers in Shimmer and with their supposed signing of Sarah Stock they might have the best too. I do agree though that there are lots ROH could still bring in though like MsChif, Danger, Rain, Deeb etc.

Wow! It increased from the 36 fans someone listed in another topic!
I guess ROH must be doing something right then? ^_^
