411’s Ring of Honor on HDNet Report 4.04.09: Episode III – Danielson vs. Aries
Posted by Larry Csonka on 04.04.2009
Bryan Danielson defeated Austin Aries, The Dark City Fight Club destroyed Cheech and Cloudy, “The Young Knockout Kid” Chris Hero lives up to his name and more! Check out 411’s complete ROH on HDNet Report for all the details!
411's Ring of Honor on HDNet Report 4.04.09
As a reminder, this is the barebones report. I will do play by play and results, that is all. JD Dunn will be back with his breakdown of the show, with the wacky hi-jinks and star ratings.
-We get a "previously on ROH on HDNet" segment to kick off the show.
-Dave Prazak and Mike Hogewood welcome us to this week's show from the HDNet studios. They hype the main event, and then shoot us to the ring for the opener.
-BREAKING NEWS FROM HOUSTON, JERRY LYNN HAS WONTHE ROH TITLE! Nice add on to the program there.
-We get smacktalk from Keenan and Stevens. Keenan has no hair these days, making my photo below rather out of date.
VS.
Erick Stevens vs. Sterling James Keenan
Keenan is sporting an overall more generic look these days. Shoulder block by Stevens, off the ropes, Keenan into the air, caught and dropped with the Samoan drop (HE'S NOT EVEN SAMOAN!) and then chops follow. Keenan wants a timeout, sucker punches Stevens and then gets a back breaker and cover for 2. Kick to the face by Keenan, and then works the back of Stevens. Belly to back by Keenan and a cover for 2. Keenan with chops now, to the corner and a back elbow to Stevens. Stevens now back with the chops, shoots Keenan off the ropes and Keenan gets a sweet counter into the STO for a cover of 2. Necktie submission by Keenan, Stevens to his feet, slams Keenan to the corner, again, whips him overhead and then connects with elbow charges. Overhead belly to belly throw by Stevens. CHOO CHOO!!!!!!!!!!! 2nd rope shoulder block by Stevens, and a cover for 2. Off the ropes, counter by Keenan and he gets an implant DDT for 2. Keenan shoots Stevens off the ropes, counter, powerslam by Stevens gets 2. Stevens signals for the end, grabs Keenan, eye poke by Keenan and he then misses a corner charge. RELEASE German by Stevens! LARIOTO~! The Doctor Bomb finishes it.
Winner: Erick Stevens @ 6:50 via pin
-Mike Hogewood: "SLAP THE PORPOISE…IT'S OVER!"
-Kyle Durden speaks with Bryan Danielson, who has main evented all over the world. He main evented ROH's first show seven years ago, and he isn't nervous about tonight. Aries should be, because he has the sickest submissions in pro wrestling today. And tonight, he shows everyone why they call him the best wrestler in the world. He respects Aries, and hopes that Aries respects him, but tonight is about proving who is the best.
-Smacktalk for Cheech and Cloudy vs. The Dark City Fight Club.
ANDVS.
The Dark City Fight Club (Kory Chavis and Jon Davis) vs. Up in Smoke (Cheech and Cloudy)
The Fight Club attacks as Cheech and Cloudy try for the handshake. Cheech tossed to the floor, double team back breaker/leg drop combo on Cloudy. Chavis tosses Cloudy around, tag to Davis and a double press slam into chokeslam nearly KILLS Cloudy. Cheech knocked to the floor, chops by Davis, Chavis tags in and Cloudy with a boot, RANA follows and hot tag to Cheech. Dropkick/619 combo on Chavis. Davis slams Cloudy into the post, and The Dark City Street Cutter on Cheech finishes it.
The Dark City Street Cutter is fucking swank. It is a double team toss into a sitout powerbomb/cutter combo move.
Winners: The Dark City Fight @ 2:45 via pin
-Mike Hogewood: "SLAP THE PORPOISE…IT'S OVER!"
-Kyle Durden is with Austin Aries. Aries and his porn star mustache says Austin Aries does care about the fans, Austin Aries doesn't care about Bryan Danielson, Austin Aries is the man. He is "A Double", he is not A STAR, but THE star and possibly the greatest man that ever lived. He mocks Durden a bit and leaves. Hogewood says he has Durden's back.
-ROHWrestling.com commercials and other such commercials run.
-Hero and Sweeney are awesome in their Smacktalk segment. Hero has a tremendous beard working right now.
VS. w/ and
The Necro Butcher vs. "The Young Knockout Kid" Chris Hero w/Larry Sweeney and Sara Del Rey
Hero has dropped his old gear for short trunks. Hero gets technical early with the headlock, escape and a shoulder block fails. Hero fails again, YAKUZA by Hero and Necro Butcher makes faces at him and then levels Hero with a right. Knee charge by Necro Butcher, tiger driver try by Necro Butcher, Sweeney distracts the ref and hero gets the KO ELBOW SHOT, covers and gets a CLOSE 2. Hero tosses Necro Butcher to the floor, Sweeney and Del Rey attack with the boots and then Hero to the floor. Hero rolls up Necro Butcher in the mats and then gets a running senton on him. Back into the ring we go, Hero stands around and waits for Necro Butcher to get up, and then lays the boots to him. Hero works the cravat now, Necro Butcher to his feet, elbows out, hero cut s him off, but eats the backdrop as he charges in. Rights by Necro Butcher, the bulldog follows and he covers for 2. Irish whip by Necro Butcher, reversal and a big elbow by Hero. Charging elbow connects. Blockbuster by hero gets 2. Back elbows by Hero, off the ropes and a bit boot by Hero. Necro Butcher to the floor, gets a chair and nails Hero. Slams Hero to the barrier, grabs a chair and gets the chair body slam on the exposed floor. Back into the ring they go, Sweeney grabs Necro Butcher's foot, he chases Sweeney now, Del Rey tosses in THE GREEN LOADED ELBOW PAD, tiger driver try…YOUNG KNOCKOUT OUT KID KO ELBOW and that is all.
Winner: "The Young Knockout Kid" Chris Hero @ 8:21 via pin
-Tale of the tape for Aries and Danielson runs.
-And yes, it is weird as hell to see Danielson entering to new music.
VS.
Bryan Danielson vs. Austin Aries
Some of the fans sang "The Final Countdown" as the match was beginning, that was cool. Aries wants to bail as the crowd begins a "You're going to get your fucking head kicked in" chant. Aries slaps the hand of Danielson and we are underway. Lockup, to the ropes and Aries breaks clean. Lockup, some mat work follows, and they stand off. Test of strength now, they battle for position and Aires into a headlock, off the ropes and a shoulder block to Danielson. Off the ropes, arm drags by Aries and into the arm bar. Wristlock now, Danielson rolls through, breaks it, dropkick and Aries is not happy. They lockup again, Aries escapes the arm bar, head scissors by Danielson, Aries escapes and Danielson bridges up and gets the backslide, Aries out, misses the kick and they stand off once again. Chess game thus far as commentary puts over that both men have teamed and faced each other several times and know each other well. Danielson works for the surfboard, but Aires gets the ropes. Knee to the gut by Aries, off the ropes and then sidesteps Danielson, but Danielson back in for the sunset flip, ref kicks the hands, Aries rolls through and dropkicks Aries in the face. Steps on the face of Danielson, off the ropes, hip toss by Danielson, and into the cross arm breaker! Aries gets the ropes as Prazak puts over Danielson training at Xtreme Couture. Aries attacks Danielson from behind, off the ropes and a back elbow by Aires. Elbow off the ropes by Aries and a cover for 2. Nerve pinch by Aries, shades of the Great Khali, Danielson back to his feet and Aires backdrops Danielson to the floor. HEAT SEEKING MISSILE by Aires connects! Aries rolls Danielson back in, rights to the gut follow. Misses the corner splash, but then rakes the back of Danielson as he set him on the top. Aries then misses the corner dropkick, they trade forearms, uppercuts by Danielson, off the ropes and a knee to the gut. Kicks to the back, and a cover for 2 by Danielson. Aries with a whip to the corner, counter by Danielson and a charging elbow connects. Butterfly suplex into the cross arm breaker by Danielson! Aries gets the ropes. Danielson sets Aries up top, they battle, Aries knocks him off and then rakes Danielson's face off of the ropes. Danielson then charges and knocks Aries into the barricade. Danielson then with a SICK knee charge off of the apron! Back in, Danielson up top, MISSILE DROPKICK~! KNEE CHARGE connects! Cattle Mutilation try, countered and Aries covers for 2. They trade rights from the knees, to their feet, they continue to trade, elbow strikes now and then a flying knee by Danielson. German is countered and a BOOT TO THE FACE by Aries! Both men are down now, and trying to get to their feet. They are in opposite corners, charging dropkick by Aries and a roll up for 2. BRAIN BUSTA countered, knees by Aries, BRAIN BUSTA countered again, gourd buster by Aries, Last Chancellery is applied! Danielson escapes, triangle choke! Aries stacks him onto a roll up, but Danielson keeps the hold, rolls and Aries taps!
Winner: Bryan Danielson @ 14:30 via submission

This was the first time I've ever seen a ROH show. I guess I don't get it. How is Danielson supposed to be the greatest wrestler out there? He had the personality of a turnip. Having a huge move-set does not make you a great wrestler. It has to be coupled with an ability to get people to care about you. I am more fascinated watching my dog lick it's own butt than watching this stuff.
Let me put it another way... I'd rather watch the clusterfuck of TNA than this stuff. Please, somebody tell me there's more to ROH than this stuff.

TREMENDOUS main event. Best match I've seen on TV this year, and I've seen Cena/HBK, Swagger/Christian, and most of the Mizorrison/Colons matches. If they continue to air a match like this once every 2 or 3 weeks, I don't think it will be a problem getting workrate fans to tune in.
Between this show, Mania (which I am definitely looking forward to), all the basketball, and OPENING FUCKING DAY, this is the greatest 3 day weekend in sports history. Well, at least in a few months anyway.

So based on seeing exactly 1 edited match of the thousands of matches Danielson has worked, you declare he has no personality? You're an idiot, Not a Fan. Just stick to your TNA clusterfucks.

Someone doesn't get it. Danielson isn't about personality he's about beating someone's ass. I've been to an ROH show and he is the only wrestler I've ever who had the fans chanting "He's going to kick your f****** head in". That would be like saying that Benoit, Malenko, Ultimo Dragon just to name a few are subpar wrestlers because they don't/didn't have "personality". I'm expecting some ROH mark comments but I don't judge wrestling on how many people there are I judge on quality. Whether it's in front of 50 people or 50,000 if it's good it's good, if it's s*** it's shit.

I think Jeff Jarrett said it best "For those that believe no explanation is needed, and for those that don't none will ever do"
If you don't get ROH that's fine, you like 70/30 ratio of entertainment to wrestling. If you like ROH you prefer a 30/70 mix. Its just the way it is. Although I don't believe the HDNET is a true presentation of ROH. As I am not a total fan of Pearce's direction with company. So slow up on the ROH bashing unless you have seen Supercard of Honor II or Great Times, Great Memories.

Two Questions.
1) Why is the Fishhook submission move banned in ROH?
2) Why is Mike Hogewood so FUCKING ANNOYING?
Posted By: Guest#6529 (Guest) on April 05, 2009 at 03:06 AM
I've got nothing against ROH. There are some amazing athletes who can truly put on a show of sorts. But really, pro wrestling (at least as it exists in the United States) is about much more than just a couple of guys or girls doing moves to each other. And for the most part, that's all that ROH is, at least what I've seen on YouTube and HDNet now.
(Waits for the ROH marks to have their way...takes the lambasting in stride and respectfully lets the "wrestling" nuts have their way.)
While Dean Malenko was a hell of a ring technician, I'm not lying when I say that the guy used to bore the hell out of me during his WCW tenure. "The Iceman" was a perfect name for many reasons, fellow wrestling fans. Why? Because he had absolutely no expression on his face, no matter what he was doing or saying. I respect the hell out of the guy for his wrestling abilities, but as an entertainer, he was a tad boring, even under a 70/30 wrestling/entertainment breakdown.
Second to last, if Danielson was truly about "beating someone's ass," then why isn't he a real fighter instead of an actor? He's a pro wrestler and, while he might be a hell of an athlete, he's a niche obsession at best.
And what's with all of negative comments towards the people who don't understand the hubbub about ROH? It's not the original ECW, people. It's not even close to that level of originality. At best, it's a solid independent show. It's still fun, but not nearly as fun as being there.

I know Bryan Danielson hasn't done any house invasions or kicked Cary Silkin's head recently, but he's oozing personality.
Posted By: Paul (Guest) on April 05, 2009 at 05:08 AM
im with kip on this a bit... the bashing is just dickless!
if you wanna bitch about a soap opera... go to 'the view' blog and let loose on how much you hate ROH. Cause frankly, I'm enjoying the fact that there is actually a wrestling show on tv!
This week is mainly subjective to storyline for the E. I understand that, but there was more wrestling on HDNet on saturday night in one hour than USA on monday or Spike on thursday in two hours.

The best way to compare ROH to WWE and TNA is this: ROH is the art film that wins the Academy Award for Best Picture while WWE is the block buster action movie that attracts the larger audience and TNA is the retread slasher film with copious amounts of blood and women. Most people call the art film shit because they don't like things like characterization or plot. They like explosions and people getting punched in the face. Or in TNA's case, lots of stabbings and boobies. So ROH is akin to Milk or Slumdog Millionaire while WWE is Indiana Jones 4 or Taken while TNA is Friday the 13th or Last House on the Left. Also note, comparing TNA to a remake is probably more true than comparing them to original horror films.

I love roh but seeing this watered down version on hdnet is not gonna help them get a bigger audience. Better off showing solid house show or ppv matches to showcase their awesome wrestlers. If I had never seen Danielson , Aries, Mcguinness or necro before I'd say whats the big deal about those guys.

ROH is not the art film. Rather, it's the YouTube video, the "Chocolate Rain" or "Star Wars Kid" that captures peoples' attention spans for a short time before the next flash-in-the-pan "epic" thing comes along.
It'll be gone and forgot sooner than later. And even if it's not, it'll eventually get lost in the sands of time and end up somewhere in the stock room of tapes in Stamford.
