411's ECW on Sc-Fi Report 4.14.09
Posted by Michael Bauer on 04.14.2009
Kozlov makes his ECW debut, the Chase is down to two, and we have a real Match of the Year Candidate from ECW!
Welcome to the ECW on Sci-Fi! As always, I am Michael Bauer, your 411 ECW Re-capper.
Josh Matthews starts with WWE Draft post-hype before welcoming us and Matt Striker to ECW before Elimination Chase hype.
John Morrison vs. Evan Bourne
Morrison has no Miz and no Slammy Awards with him tonight because of the draft. We get highlights of Miz being drafted and breaking the team with Morrison last night. The bell rings and the lockup leads to a grounded go-behind by Evan Bourne, but Morrison powers out with an arm wrench. Bourne reverses using his quickness to get an arm wrench of his own. Morrison escapes with a knee to the gut and gets a headlock. Bourne shoves Morrison off, but he gets decked with a shoulder block. Morrison charges again, Bourne avoids it and get an arm drag takedown into a grounded arm wrench. Morrison backs Bourne into the corner for a break, but Bourne catches him for a quick near fall. Morrison chokes Bourne on the bottom rope and then starts kicking away. Bourne fights back, but Morrison ducks the step up enziguri. Bourne catches Morrison flush with a kick for two and then stomps away in the corner. Morrison whipped into the corner and Bourne charges. Bourne gets flipped over the rope and he lands on the apron. Morrison has his punch blocked, but he leg sweeps Bourne. Morrison runs off the ropes and charges the knee into the face of Bourne. Bourne collapses to the floor, Morrison rolls him in, and gets a two count. Bourne gets thrown into the corner and Morrison locks in a torture rack. Bourne escapes as he spins around into a headscissors!!! Holy shit!! Morrison to the floor, Bourne looks to charge, but Morrison dives in and hits a dropkick to the knee. Both men are down as we go to commercial at 5:30.
Back at 9:10 and Morrison has Bourne in a headlock, almost like a sleeperhold. Bourne gets to his feet and elbows out. Bourne lands some kicks to the leg, but Morrison hits a roundhouse to the head for a two count. Morrison just pounds away in anger and Bourne gets stomped in the gut. Bourne backed into the corner and Morrison pounds away, but Bourne fires back until Morrison locks in a version of a Crowbar. Morrison switches into a Chicken Wing as Bourne gets to his feet. After some struggling, Morrison grounds Bourne again as Bourne looks to be passing out. Bourne rolls around and frees an arm before charging into the corner to break the hold, hitting John's head on the turnbuckle., Bourne fights back and hits a huge clothesline, followed by a hurricarana. Bourne follows with a drop kick and leaping spin kick for a two count. Morrison whipped into the corner and he gets the foot up, but Bourne catches it and send Morrison up top before hitting a leaping hurricarana for two. Bourne leaped off the mat for that one. Bourne and Morrison reverses each other into some near falls. Morrison with a right hand and he goes to the ropes, but Bourne follows and both men gets dumped to the floor. The ref starts the count and Bourne rolls in Morrison. Bourne goes up top at eight and hits the flying knees from the top for a two count. Bourne hits a series of stiff kicks to chest. Morrison catches the third and tries for the Moonlight Drive. Bourne slips out and hits a knee to the face. Bourne sets Morrison in position and goes up top, but Morrison catches him with a enziguri and hits a Moonlight Drive from the top rope! Morrison gets the cover and the three count to end the match at 17:20 in an early Free TV MOTY candidate!
Winner: John Morrison
Match Rating: **** MOTY on Free Television by far this year. This match was nearly flawless and it shows exactly why Morrison was a former ECW Champion and why Bourne will eventually be some champion in the WWE.
Backstage, Vladimir Kozlov walks towards the ring as ECW's draft pick from last night.
Vladimir Kozlov vs. David Florea
David, it has been nice knowing you. The bell rings and David runs right into a boot. Kozlov just pounds with forearms in the corner and follows with a shoulder block. David hits one punch and goes to the second rope and leaps into a headbutt. Kozlov hits a fallaway slam and follows with a one handed chokebomb for the three count in under two minutes. After the bell, Vladimir grabs the microphone and starts speaking Russian with some American mixed in. Something about dominating everywhere else and now ECW will be dominated.
Winner: Vladimir Kozlov
Match Rating: ½* A pure DUD for a squash match.
Backstage, Finlay and Hornswoggle warm up for the Triple Threat Match.
We are back and we get a look at Triple H and Randy Orton, which Matt and Josh touch on before hyping the supplemental draft.
Backstage, Paul and Katie Lea are backstage worrying about the draft and the possible splitting of brother and sister. Jack Swagger walks in and says that since Superstars debuts this week, they should have a Q&A with Jack Swagger. She has a better idea and has the finals of the Elimination Chase scheduled instead. GREAT!!! But she does thank him and congratulates Swagger on an excellent match last night on Raw.
Elimination Chase Triple Threat Match - Christian vs. Tommy Dreamer vs. Finlay
Before this begins, I give two to one odds that Christian loses here and gets sent elsewhere in the supplemental draft.
The bell rings and Finlay kicks Dreamer in the gut and Christian follows up after Finlay. Finlay gets the advantage back and takes down Dreamer before hitting a hip toss on Christian onto Dreamer. Finlay covers Dreamer for two. Christian hits an inverted atomic drop on Finlay and Dreamer is back up. Dreamer whips Finlay into the turnbuckle, but he walks into a boot to the face. Finlay covers and gets a two count. Finlay hits an uppercut and keeps Christian out of the ring. Dreamer gets thrown into the corner again as Christian comes back in. Christian runs after Dreamer, but Dreamer avoids the contact and nails Finlay with a clothesline. Christian charges again and gets back body dropped. Dreamer hits a suplex on Christian for a one count. Dreamer lines up Finlay with a few punches as he backs to the ropes. Dreamer charges Finlay and clotheslines him and Finlay to the floor. Christian heads up top and hits a cross body onto both men as we go to a commercial at 3:45.
We return at 8:55 as Christian heads up top to just be thrown to the floor by Finlay. Finlay got thrown hard into the steel steps during the break. Finlay goes after Dreamer and locks in a chinlock as Hornswoggle is screaming something from the floor. Finlay throws Dreamer down by the head and gets a two count as Josh one-ups Striker on the rules of the match as there is no disqualifications. Dreamer gets locked in an arm bar, but Dreamer locks his hands and Finlay decides to go outside and nail Christian with a clothesline for some reason. Dreamer gets nailed with an inverted backbreaker for a two count by Finlay. Finlay goes back to the chinlock, but Dreamer escapes with a jawbreaker. Dreamer hits a body slam as Christian heads up top. Dreamer avoids the contact and drop toe holds Christian onto Finlay. Dreamer gets sent to the floor as Finlay and Christian clock heads as Finlay came off the turnbuckle. Christian heads up top, but Finlay catches him a now Dreamer is in. Finlay gets into a Tree of Woe as Dreamer superplexes Christian for a two count. Dreamer hits the basement dropkick, but Finlay is up fast enough to dump Dreamer to the floor. Christian gets hits with the rolling fireman's carry, but gets to the floor. Dreamer gets a DDT for two count on Finlay. Christian goes for the Killswitch, but he gets thrown into the ropes and he gets stuck. Finlay charges Dreamer, but he gets flapjacked into Christian. Dreamer goes for a school boy, but gets two. Finlay is up quickly and hits the Celtic Cross on Dreamer for the three count at 15:00. Dreamer is out of the Chase and my idea is so wrong.
Winner: Finlay Eliminated from the Chase: Tommy Dreamer
Match Rating: **1/2 Pretty good match, even if it did feel a little disorganized.
Wow ECW was rocking the place!! If only RAW was so wrestling heavy...

My guess is that Christian will win the elimination chase, get drafted in the supplemental draft, then loses to Swagger at Backlash.
Posted By: namewrittenonbirthcertificate (Guest) on April 14, 2009 at 10:23 PM
When will you Christian-loving douchebags learn, he will never amount to anything in WWE?
Posted By: Guest#9693 (Guest) on April 14, 2009 at 10:23 PM
Totally agree on the Morrison/Bourne match. That was pure, undiluted, high test awesomeness. I loved that it kept Bourne looking strong, because a match like that against Morrison is nothing to be ashamed of at all, even if he didn't get the 1-2-3.
As close to flawless as I have ever seen in the new ECW.

farewell dreamer.... you will always be regarded as a legend in the eyes of the true ecw fans. EC FUCKIN W!!!!!!!

awesome show
Posted By: Guest#2642 (Guest) on April 14, 2009 at 10:35 PM
Good show but I'm not to keen on Striker and Matthews' banter with each other. It was pretty childish and took away from some of the matches.
Posted By: Jay (Guest) on April 14, 2009 at 10:39 PM
God damn it. I was so hoping Tommy would be meeting Swagger at backlash. I love Christian but he needs to be on smackdown or raw and jesus christ please Finley and his retarded midget off my television already. I can't stand the kid friendly pg version of him. So now what for Dreamer? Basicaly they had him cut the retirement promo for no reason? So gay...
Posted By: Tom Z (Guest) on April 14, 2009 at 10:43 PM
I gotta say, I like the team of Matthews and Striker. They manage to really put over the athletes, the moves, the psychology and the story being told in the ring, while also being entertaining as they play off each other. In short, they are the future as far as announcers go. At least I hope so. It is great to see someone stepping up, because I was terrified all we would have is cole/grisham...
Posted By: Ben S (Guest) on April 14, 2009 at 10:53 PM
shit can't wait to get my hands on ECW tonight,
Posted By: jords (Guest) on April 14, 2009 at 10:54 PM
Morrison vs Sydal or Bourne if you will was good but I would not go as far as 4 stars
Posted By: random (Guest) on April 14, 2009 at 11:18 PM
That's the ECW we know and love. Full of wrestling
Posted By: Guest#6204 (Guest) on April 14, 2009 at 11:30 PM
The Bourne/Morrison match was fantastic. Few things I haven't seen before. I would've liked to see Bourne in the MITB match.
Posted By: WMD (Guest) on April 14, 2009 at 11:31 PM
I was all for Miz And Morrison to stay together. But now they are apart.
MORRISON FOR ECW CHAMPION!
Posted By: Matt P (Guest) on April 14, 2009 at 11:37 PM
Bourne vs Morrison = Match Of The YEAR Candidate !
Dammit draft Morrison to SD ! now and let him going wild against the likes of Benjamin and Mysterio.
Posted By: Epic Win for E C W (Guest) on April 14, 2009 at 11:41 PM
Gotta agree with Ben, I usually tune out wrestling announcers but not with Josh and Striker. They call the matches like sports rather than entertainment. Josh asking Striker things like, "How should Borne escape?" I like this style a lot more than "Bah-Gawd". These two actually watch the match and put over their talent.
Morrison/Bourne was as good a match I've seen on TV in at least 3 years.
Posted By: Jace (Guest) on April 14, 2009 at 11:44 PM
Finally.....wrestling is returning to normal. The way I see it, we got Raw for the kids. ECW for those wanting to see the future. TNA for those who enjoy the past and the present. Smackdown for anyone who has nothing to do on a Friday night (sadly). And ROH for those who choose an alternative source for wrestling entertainment. Seems pretty simple enough for me.
Posted By: Brian C. (Guest) on April 14, 2009 at 11:50 PM
It's time to push the likes of benjamin, morrison, bourne, the hardyz, the miz, edge, christian to the top permanently.
I'm sick of the old farts, push those damn guys to main event status on the big shows.
Posted By: Guest#2133 (Guest) on April 14, 2009 at 11:52 PM
Tommy does not deserve to be treated like this.

"So now what for Dreamer? Basicaly they had him cut the retirement promo for no reason? So gay..."
Posted By: Tom Z (Guest) on April 14, 2009 at 10:43 PM
Not in the least bit my friend.
The retirement promo served its purpose. It gave suckers like yourself a false sense of hope that Dreamer might actually have a shot at winning the ECW title one last time. In turn, it probably helped the ratings a smidgen with old ECW marks tuning in just to see Dreamer climb back up the ladder.
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
What a brilliantly concocted, genius, manipulatively master minded plan.
Dam them McMahons.

I swear, Morrison has like fifty moves in his arsenal. He and Bourne were incredible tonight. Absolutely spot on and flawless with everything they did in that match. I fully expect both of them to move in the supplemental draft, and if that happens then they both gave a hell of a show for their parting ECW performance.
Posted By: Guest#8690 (Guest) on April 15, 2009 at 12:37 AM
You know what's very telling about the IWC's general misunderstanding of good/bad action? Everyone here is fawning over how many moves Bourne and Morrison did ... and while yes, that's impressive ... no one yet has mentioned how brutally STIFF and PAINFUL the execution of those moves looked. They were not pulling any punches there, folks. High-flying moves are nice, but the sheer brutality of the blows was really why the match was so impressive, if you ask me.
Posted By: MDK (Guest) on April 15, 2009 at 02:45 AM
"Match Rating: **** MOTY on Free Television by far this year. This match was nearly flawless and it shows exactly why Morrison was a former ECW Champion and why Bourne will eventually be some champion in the WWE."
It makes you sick that neither man had a match at Wrestlemania, don't it.
Ah well, next year.
Posted By: Odin (Guest) on April 15, 2009 at 03:04 AM
I like Finlay, and I respect the hell out of Dreamer, and I don't normally like fatal 4-ways, but damn... Morrison, Bourne, Christian, Swagger. Can I have it? Oh wait, Kozlov is on the show now? I'm guessing that means something, which probably is a switch to a face so that they can have something to do with that guy, since guys like Morrison or Bourne can still be interesting even if not chasing the strap, in spite of what the fans may want.
Posted By: Guest#0374 (Guest) on April 15, 2009 at 03:21 AM
Fucking WOW...that's all I can say about the Morrison/Bourne match. That was pure awesomeness.
Kozlov just needs to go away, the dude can't do shit in the ring and bores the living shit out of anyone watching.
Posted By: Hitman (Guest) on April 15, 2009 at 08:19 AM
moty... or match of the hurricanrana, which is the fakest move like... EVER!!

Best "WRESTLING" show on t.v.
Posted By: jleff (Guest) on April 15, 2009 at 09:03 AM
A great show last night. the Morrison/Bourne match was fantastic. The Triple-Threat match was just ok. I hated seeing Finley dominate both Dreamer and Christian. Dreamer should have had one more shot for the ECW title. But you do know that he wouldn't have won it, don't you? The WWE would never let an "ECW original" have any glory now. I've always felt Dreamer was a decent wrestler, but he was never this legend people claim he is. People hated Grisham's comment on RAW because it struck too close to home.
Posted By: mogamer (Guest) on April 15, 2009 at 09:09 AM
Yeah, Morrison vs. Bourne was great. Loved it!
Posted By: matrix1004 (Guest) on April 15, 2009 at 09:17 AM
"**** MOTY on Free Television by far this year."
I would still rank Cena/Michaels from early January higher. Which was about ****1/2.
Not that this match wasn't great, but I'd put it around ***3/4-****.
Posted By: master hand (Guest) on April 15, 2009 at 09:47 AM
I believe Dreamer's contract expires at the end of June, and the next PPV after Backlash is Night of Extreme/Extreme Rules/Name Pending. I'm sure he'll get his shot there; they'll give him 15-20 minutes and he'll come tantilizingly close and not win. I'd like to see him win myself, but he always thought he was more compelling as the challenger and not the champion (he has stated he never wanted to win the title in the original ECW but was the best option when Taz[z] was leaving), so I doubt it.
Posted By: Gillan (Guest) on April 15, 2009 at 10:03 AM
ECw is fast becoming the show to watch for action. a bit more consistency and a couple of good supplemental draft picks, without losing anyone key and ecw will be rockin

more matches like that opener
and more tiffany
ecw aint the doormat no mo

The bourne - morrison match was fantastic... they both did moves I've never seen before, but that made sense. Like when Bourne was going to fly out of the ring onto Morrison, John jumpped into the ring and dropkicked bourne in the act. Also when Morrison went to shoot the ropes, Bourne followed him and hit that cross body over the top out of nowhere. This was Bourne being awesome / innovative, without the super crazy spots he'd be bound to get hurt doing at some point. Great match, and hopefully there will a lot more of this to come from these two.
Posted By: Guest#1517 (Guest) on April 15, 2009 at 10:32 AM
Wow, am I really going to be the first one to mark out over Striker saying "LARIATTTOOOO"? Awesome show last night.
Posted By: Big Ell (Guest) on April 15, 2009 at 10:53 AM
Morrison-Bourne a MOTYC? Um, not exactly. It was good, but not great. Now if they move these guys to Smackdown then they'll get a chance to really shine.
Posted By: jj (Guest) on April 15, 2009 at 11:21 AM
That Morrison/Bourne match was seriously all kinds of awesome with loads of original spots and strategy throughout it. If this was on PPV... I'd of given this ****1/2 it was that good.
Posted By: Andrew Barbarash (Guest) on April 15, 2009 at 11:30 AM
What a match. I think we just saw a preview of the WrestleMania XXVII main event. Good storytelling with Bourne trying several times in vain to hit the SSP only to come up short and end up eating the Moonlight Drive from the ropes (!!). That knee shot from Morrison sending Bourne to the outside was stiff as hell and Evan's close following of John to the ropes to crossbody him to the floor was brilliant.
Also kudos to Striker for getting the line "No nasal menstruation tonight" in just seconds into the broadcast. Matthews and Striker are the best announce team today. Matthews reminds me (as he did years ago on Velocity) of Joey Styles and Striker is flat out awesome.
I am loving me some ECW.

Say what you will, that was the best WWE TV match of 2009 thus far.
ECW puts out the best free matches of all the brands, it seems. Swagger/Christian and Miz/Primo, for example.

Looking forward to seeing Bourne vs. Morrison on my tivo, I had tickets to last night's Rays game
Posted By: Bill (Guest) on April 15, 2009 at 11:53 AM
That Bourne/Morrison match was a thing of beauty. I normally don't catch ECW because of my schedule but this week I was home and I'm SO glad. I enjoyed that more than the Main Event of Wrestlemania XXV!
BTW, for the sake of my schedule, I'm glad they're moving back to 10pm. Especially if we get more of this awesomeness.
Thanks Bourne.
Thanks Morrison.

While the Morrison/Bourne match was awesome, can somebody tell me why the WWE is having Bourne do the J-O-B two nights in a row? Now, I can understand jobbing him out to Rey on Raw because Rey is the IC champion and you don’t want to devalue the champ by having him lose in a non-title match (God knows the WWE did enough of that during Rey’s sorry excuse for a World title reign.). Anyway, but why have Bourne job to Morrison? What would Morrison have lost if Bourne pinned him in a highly competitive match? Answer: Nothing. Bourne wouldn’t have lost anything either had a) this been his only match this week or b) he gotten the victory over Rey on Raw. By having Bourne look like a bitch two nights in a row, the WWE is holding down one of it’s brightest stars. At this rate, the WWE will have Bourne be destroyed by Kozlov next week.
Posted By: nivek (Guest) on April 15, 2009 at 06:43 PM
So Kozlov is back burying jobbers again like he did when he debuted on Smackdown 2 years ago..
Wow, that's awesome........
Posted By: wtf (Guest) on April 15, 2009 at 06:52 PM
I'm sad that MnM are split up, but I think they have become much better as singles stars, and another different tag team with other people is not off the cards either. If Miz can keep putting in matches like he did with Kofi, and Morrison just staying awesome, then I am all for this move.
Christian will win the chase, challenge Swagger, and win the title.

Just like Boogeyman did on ECW before they Future Endeavored him. Let's keep our fingers crossed that they do the same with Kozzzzzzzzlov.
Morrison's mat/submission wrestling was fantastic. Most WWE guys just kill time with that stuff, but he kept it really interesting. The scary thing is that Swagger/Hardy and Swagger/Christian were as good or better than Morrison/Bourne. What a great little wrestling show this is. Damn!
Posted By: Dr Insanity (Guest) on April 15, 2009 at 10:51 PM
Bourne/Morrison was good, but i would rate it ***1/2 it went for 13:35. I usually expect free tv matches to be around **-***. but good on the bookers to give these 2 this length. 3 Way was **1/2 as well nice match, dreamer wrestled alot better here than the 4 way.
Posted By: catsa (Guest) on April 16, 2009 at 09:21 AM
sydal vs morrison was a good match, but i think chrisitan vs swagger was way WAY better..cant believe how underrated this match is..
Posted By: sutt (Guest) on April 16, 2009 at 03:26 PM
benz - are you for real? that miz-kofi match nearly put me to sleep..so uneventful was it..miz sucks as a singles competitor. better get him and kendrick hooked up asap.
