411's WWE Superstars Report 05.07.09
Posted by Rob McNew on 05.07.2009

-Taped from HSBC Arena in Buffalo, NY & Mellon Arena in Pittsburgh, PA

-Hosted by Michael Cole, Jerry "The King" Lawler, Jim Ross, Todd Grisham, Josh Mathews, & Matt Striker

-We kick things right off with The Cutting Edge featuring Edge's guest and Judgment Day opponent Jeff Hardy. Thankfully Jeff's pyro doesn't explode in his face like the last time he was booked on the Cutting Edge. Edge says about a month ago he had John Cena on the show, and he talked to him about their history and how it had to come to an end. He said when it had to come to an end he would be the last man standing, and that's exactly what happened. Edge says he's ridded himself of one long time rival, and he asked Jeff to come out here because he's going to do the same thing to him. He says he's exercising his demons, and tells Jeff to savor his big victory at Madison Square Garden because this, just like Edge-Cena, has to end. He says its going to end at Judgment Day, and it will end the way it always does. With Edge victorious. Jeff asks if he really wants to go down that road, because when he became WWE Champion he beat Edge to do it. Edge calls it one lucky night, but Jeff cuts him off and tells him a lucky night is when a brother turns on a brother and that allows him to pick up a cheap victory. Jeff says he's been battling Matt the past few months trying to find some closure, and he still hasn't found it. What's missing is Championship gold which was taken from him at the Rumble, but at Judgment Day its coming back to him. Edge says if he wants to talk about a lucky night we can talk about over ten years time. Edge says they started in WWE around the same time, and since the very first time they locked up until right now one thing has remained the same. When Edge sees an opportunity he takes advantage and makes the most of it. Jeff on the other hand gets opportunity handed to him, and he squanders it. Edge says Jeff has everyone fooled. He's a new man and he just wants closure. He says he sees through it and Jeff is still the same screw up he's always been. Jeff thanks him for the trip down memory lane, and lets him know that he's right they have been through a lot. Jeff says if Edge is afraid he better buckle up because they're gonna have a lot more. Jeff attacks with a twist of fate and a swanton to close out the interview. Excellent promo that did a great job of recapping the history between these two.

Santina Marella & Kelly Kelly vs. Beth Phoenix & Rosa Mendes
Santina starts the match with Rosa, and the hilarity begins immediately. Rosa kicks "her" right in the hamstring, and Santino needs a timeout. He hilarious walks it off by hitting the ropes. Beth tags in, and that causes Santina to tag out to Kelly. Kelly comes in and delivers a hurracanrana for a one count. Kelly hits the ropes and delivers another rana, and a dropkick. She brings in Rosa, and sends her into the corner and delivers the cross ring backspring in the corner. Santina comes in and sort of gives on to Beth before heading out. That only riles up Beth who takes it out on Kelly with a clothesline and then sends her to the corner giving her a back splash of her own. Rosa tags in and puts the boots to Kelly, and then snap mares her into a bow and arrow. Beth tags back in and delivers an elbow drop and follows up by ramming Kelly face first into the buckle. Kelly tries to fight back with a kick, and then eventually tags in to Santina. More hilarity ensues as Santina gets way over zealous and gets a shot to the breadbasket for her trouble. Beth goes for an elbow drop which misses, but is able to whip Santina into the corner. She goes for a splash, but Santina moves and rolls her up for one. Beth comes back with a back elbow, and then goes for a slam. Santina slides down the back, and rolls up Beth again. Rosa comes in to make the save, but gets a drop toehold from Santina. Kelly tags back in and delivers a split legged legdrop to Rosa which finishes at 4:16. After the match Santina gets really friendly in the post match celebration. While this was a comedy match when Santina was in the ring, the portions when the ladies were going at it were very solid. Its amazing to think how far Kelly Kelly has come.
Winners: Santina Marella & Kelly Kelly (Kelly pins Mendes-Legdrop **)

Finlay vs. Zack Ryder
Ryder is out complete with his new gimmick that makes him look a lot like Grandmaster Sexay. He's basically a metrosexual now. Finlay grabs a side headlock, and then delivers a shoulderblock off the ropes. Ryder bails to the ropes concerned about his hair getting messed up. Finlay hits a snap mare, and then messes up Ryder's hair to rile him up. Zack gets a shove and WOO WOO WOO, but that just serves to piss Finlay off who delivers a bodyslam, and then stops a backdrop attempt with a kick. Ryder comes back with a kick sending Finlay to the floor, but his attempt to dive over the top fails as Finlay crotches him on the ring apron. Finlay fires Ryder back inside, but gets met with a kick on his way back in and an elbow for one. Ryder grabs a side headlock, and then switches to a sleeper hold. Finlay counters with a chinbuster, and then pulls Ryder off the top rope for a two count. Ryder rolls to the floor, but Finlay follows him out with a clothesline. Back inside they go, and Ryder shoots Finlay to the corner. He goes for a charge, but Finlay moves and Ryder eats the ring post. Finlay follows with the Celtic Cross, and that makes the pinfall academic at 3:42. What's the point of a gimmick overhaul if you're just going to job the guy out in his first match?
Winner: Finlay (Pinfall-Celtic Cross *3/4)

-Recap of Smackdown from last week is shown focusing on the Jericho-Morrison confrontation that led to tonight's main event.

Chris Jericho vs. John Morrison
Morrison pushes Jericho into the corner, and Jericho gives him a shove on the break before bailing to the floor. Back inside Jericho grabs a side headlock, and takes Morrison over with it. Morrison reverses out, and they trade switches with Jericho ending up back in control. Jericho hits the ropes and delivers a shoulderblock, but Morrison comes right back with a dropkick. Clothesline by Morrison sends Jericho to the floor and he follows up with a baseball slide. Morrison rams Jericho into the apron before sliding him back inside for the two count. European uppercut connects for Morrison who hits the ropes, but runs into a back elbow from Jericho for two. Jericho toys with Morrison a bit smacking him about the head, but Morrison comes firing back sending Jericho sternum first into the buckle. Morrison goes to springboard off the top, but Jericho is up and shoves him all the way to the floor as we head to break. Back from commercial Jericho has Morrison locked in a crossface half nelson, and he follows up with a knee to the mid-section. Jericho chokes out Morrison on the second rope, and then goes for a vertical suplex. Morrison flips out and comes back with a clothesline. Morrison delivers a spinning heel kick, and a running knee to pick up a two count. Jericho counters out of a moonlight drive attempt and delivers a clothesline. Jericho goes for the lionsault, but Morrison moves out of the way and Jericho lands on his feet. Morrison hits a reverse facebuster for a two count, and comes back with a European uppercut. Morrison delivers a boot in the corner, but walks into the Walls of Jericho. Morrison quickly gets to the ropes, and then counters a bulldog attempt sending Jericho into the buckle. Morrison hits a split legged corkscrew moonsault but Jericho gets his foot on the rope to break the count. Jericho comes back with a cheap shot, and delivers a forearm to the face. Jericho delivers a few shoulders in the corner, and sends Morrison to the corner. Morrison hops up to the second rope and delivers a crossbody for two, but Jericho is right back with an enzaguri to pick up a near fall of his own. Morrison hits the ropes, and stops a backdrop attempt with a kick to the face. Springboard spin kick connects for Morrison, but then Shelton's music plays and he shows up on the titantron. He sends a message to Morrison saying "Now that I got your attention, gotcha." Morrison turns around and walks into a codebreaker from Jericho which finishes at 11:27. Shelton then comes out to the ramp to let Morrison know "I gotcha." Kind of a lame ending to a really good match, but it made Morrison look really strong nearly having Jericho beat.
Winner: Chris Jericho (Pinfall-Codebreaker ***)

-Another solid show from the hidden gem of WWE programming. It's a no frills show, but if you like solid in ring action without all the storylines and backstage drama this is the show for you.

you.

I disagree wholeheartedly. The show dragged on and had no point. WWE Fans are tards.

The only positive of this show was the ending to the divas match

Jericho/Morrison was pretty good considering they haven't faced each other one-on-one before. As expected, it's going to take some time for Morrison to be built up as a face that the crowd really gets behind, but he'll get there. Loved seeing the split-legged corkscrew moonsault again. I really hope they give the apparent Morrison/Shelton program some time to put on the amazing matches they're capable of having.

Other than that, Ryder's in-ring work is just as bad as his new look. I've been amused with the whole "WOO WOO WOO" thing he's used on the web shows for a while, but he's headed for some future endeavors at this point.

I was really impressed by Kelly Kelly too. We haven't seen her wrestle much lately, but she looks sharp as can be in the ring. I'm pretty sure Beth was still the legal woman when Kelly pinned Rosa, but whatever.

Good show.

The best thing about a face Morrison... the return of the Springboard Corkscrew Moonsault!

Pretty good main event from Chris Jericho and John Morrison - plus Zack Ryder's new theme song is catchy as hell, and though it might be a long shot, this new gimmick just might get over.

WOO WOO WOO!

Ryder sucks, but I freakin love him and hope his new look and annoying personality and terrible new music gets him over sommehow.

He's the ECW version of Ziggler.
The guy who is ridiculous and retarded, yet I love them and want them to succeed.

Whats sad isnt that you dont like the show, whats sad and very PATHETIC is the fact that you WATCH it, the BITCH about it then insult people who like it and then try to convince people not to watch? what are you a TNA mark? If your such a wrestling extrememist and dont like the product DONT WATCH, nobody is forcing you to watch. But everyday stupid marks like you watch the show and or read the highlights then bitch. Why do you put your dumbass selves through so much ,idery if its so god awful for you. B/c you have no life and you enjoy bitchery - thats why. Bitching on a board about a show isnt going to get WWE or TNA to change it.

I'm a fan of both Jericho and Morrison, but for those of you who are saying that that was a "very good" match, I think you're overrating it because of who is involved.

They had an AWFUL lot of missed spots in this match, and you could tell that they were just plodding and calling spots on the go to set up Shelton's segment later in the match.

I'm all for more Morrison vs Jericho/Benjamin, but lets not pretend like something is better than what it really is.

The main event between Morrison and Jericho tore the house down.

I thought ECW was the show for me?
They may as well call this show ECW 2 (and that's not a bad thing...)

I had no problem with the ending. Good to see Jericho get some momentum with his new program starting up tonight. And Benjamin/Morrison got robbed of having a real match last week...it's time to see them in some 15 minute matches like we've become used to since Shelton crossed over.

Agreed on Zack Ryder. Why give the guy a makeover and then job him on his first match? But, having him in the ring with Finlay is a good move as he can work a green guy to a good match.

Posted By: NoirFan (Guest)  on May 08, 2009 at 12:48 PM

I like the new Zack Ryder and think he has a chance. But him jobbing his first match with his new gimmick is questionable.Couldnt Tyson Kidd interfere and cost Finlay the match.God I hate Finlay

Posted By: The Gold Standard (Guest)  on May 08, 2009 at 02:11 PM

Luckily, losing to Finlay isn't likely to hurt Zack Ryder that much. Finlay is at the top of the ECW heap with Christian and Swagger, and he got a surprising amount of offense in what I expected to be a total squash. The big advantage of matches like this, is that working with Finlay will help Zack Ryder learn, and help us see if he has the chance to. I like his annoyingly stupid gimmick, and hope things work out for him. I think the ending of Superstars would have worked better if Shelton Benjamin didn't come out after it was over and say, "I got you, I so got you." It made Benjamin look, well, stupid. I know he's not the best on the mic, but that seemed worse than usual. other than that though, I really enjoyed it.
