411's ECW on Sci-Fi Report 6.16.09
Posted by Michael Bauer on 06.16.2009

Welcome to the ECW on Sci-Fi! As always, I am Michael Bauer, your 411 ECW Re-capper.

Straight to the opening video this week and then out to Josh Matthews and Matt Striker at ringside.

David Hart Smith (with the Hart Dynasty) vs. Christian

The bell rings and the lockup sends Christian into the corner and we get a clean break by Smith. Christian gets a go behind, but Smith gets an arm wrench into a hammerlock. Christian reverses into a headlock and is bounced off the ropes, running into a shoulder block. Christian backed into the corner and he slaps the taste out of Smith. Smith charges into the corner, Christian moves and gets a school boy for two. Christian walks into a powerslam and Smith gets a headlock takedown. Christian whips him off and hits a spinning heel kick to the face. Smith rolls to the apron and catches Christian with a shoulder to the gut. Christian blocks a suplex attempt to the floor and lands on the apron. Christian drops down and trips Smith into the apron. Christian rolls back in and hits a dropkick to the face. Both men on the apron now and Smith connects with a modified Rock Bottom, with Christian's head crashing on the apron. Christian rolled back in and Smith stomps away and locks in a chinlock with a knee to the back for extra pressure. Christian to his feet, but Smith connects with a delayed vertical suplex and gets a two count. Christian holds the ropes as he gets pounded, but he low bridges Smith. Christian runs off the ropes and fives to the floor, landing on Smith as we go to commercial at 6:20.

Back at 10:10 and Christian is locked in a chinlock, but gets to his feet and punches out until he is dropped in one punch. Smith with a huge set of backbreakers for a two count. Smith slaps Christian and he gets one right back before ramming Christian into the corner. Christian set up top, but he punches and kicks Smith away. Christian stands and hits a missile dropkick for two. Christian gets whipped hard into the corner, but he slips around and kicks Smith in the head twice. Christian dives off the second rope with a European Uppercut for two. Christian slips out of a powerslam and drop toe holds Smith onto the second rope. Christian stands on his back and the slips down to slap the taste of his mouth. Christian chases Kidd around the ring, before walks right into a boot as he gets back into the ring. Christian slips out of a powerslam attempt and Smith goes shoulder first into the corner. Christian flips over him into a sunset flip for two. Christian into the corner, but Smith walks into a boot. Christian connects with a Tornado DDT. Christian tries for the Killswitch, but Smith slips out and tries for a back suplex, but Christian slips out also. Christian leaps on the back of Smith and gets a sleeper, but Smith lifts up into the running powerslam for a long two count. Christian slips away from Smith and snaps his neck along the top rope and goes back up top, but Natalya distracts the ref. Kidd throws Christian into the ropes and Smith connects with a Back Drop Driver to get the three count at 15:10.

Winner: David Hart Smith

Match Rating: ***1/4 Great contest. Nothing to complain about here.

After the bell, the Hart Dynasty goes for the Hart Attack, but Finlay comes out to make the save… and then he decks Christian with the shillelagh!

We see some video of Evan defeating Tony Atlas last week and Henry taking some aggression out after the match before we go to commercial.

After the break, we see a replay of Finlay just decking Christian. Backstage, Gregory Helms asks Finlay why he did what he did. Finlay simply says that Christian and Dreamer got into a fight and he got injured. Where he comes from, it's an eye for an eye.

Mark Henry (with Tony Atlas) vs. Evan Bourne

The bell rings and Henry charges fast, but Bourne dodges. Bourne punches away, but he just gets chucked to the floor. Henry pounds on the taped ribs of Bourne and rolls him in. Bourne kicks away, but Henry just throws him off into the corner. Bourne avoids a charge, but walks into a boot from Henry. Henry with a huge headbutt and then he just steps on Bourne on his way to the ropes, but Bourne dodges a banzai drop. Bourne kicks away again, but is just not having any impact. Bourne off the ropes and he runs right into a bear splash. Henry runs off the ropes and Bourne avoids a splash. Bourne again kicks away and hits a low dropkick for a two count. Henry blocks a kick and Bourne leaps around into a crucifix… I don't think so. Henry flips Bourne around and squashes him with the World's Strongest Slam for the three count at 3:30. After the bell, Henry picks up a limp Evan Bourne and drops him again with the World's Strongest Slam.

Winner: Mark Henry

Match Rating: *1/2 Not as good, due to paying off the injured ribs of Bourne. Still passable.

After a commercial, we get the Raw Rebound with the craziness of the Three-For-All, complete with some highlights of all three title matches, mostly focusing on the WWE Title, won by Randy Orton. It then goes to Vince McMahon selling Raw to Donald Trump and the latest bullshit the WWE has come up with. We then go to the ten man battle royal, won by Triple H of course, leading to a last man standing match on commercial free television next week!

Backstage, Gregory Helms is late to his interview with Jack Swagger. Swagger can't believe he has to earn a title shot by defeating Tommy Dreamer tonight, calling it a joke, but not as big of a joke as Dreamer being champion in the first place.

Non Title Match: Jack Swagger vs. Tommy Dreamer

So if Jack Swagger wins, he gets a title shot against Tommy Dreamer… seems kinda obvious here. The bell rings and they jockey for position, with Swagger getting a go behind into an amateur takedown. Dreamer backed into the corner, but he escapes with a series on knee strikes. Dreamer connects with a neck snapmare on Swagger, then follows with a drop toe hold and an elbow to the back for two. Swagger connects with a belly to back out of nowhere and starts stomping on Dreamer. Dreamer bounced off the ropes, but Swagger ducks too early. Dreamer with a kick, followed by a series of punches. Swagger gets clotheslined to the floor and Dreamer connects with a baseball slide, sending Swagger into the guardrail. Dreamer goes to the apron and measures the cannonball roll, but Swagger catches him and hits a huge powerslam on the floor! Dreamer is down as we go to commercial at 2:45.

We are back at 6:00 and Dreamer is in a neck vice and then choked on the second rope. Swagger screams at Dreamer in the corner, but Dreamer fires back with a slap. Dreamer throws Swagger into the corner and tries the bulldog, but Swagger throws him off and reverses momentum into an abdominal stretch. Swagger grabs the ropes until the ref forces and break and Dreamer gets the hip toss and a roll up for two. Swagger with a belly to belly suplex for a two count. Swagger pounds on Dreamer in the corner and connects with a hard clothesline. Swagger with a waistlock and Dreamer gets to his feet, escaping by running into the corner and ducking, sending Swagger's head into the turnbuckle hard. DAMN! Dreamer with a whip and he connects with the bulldog. Dreamer ducks a clothesline and hits a neckbreaker for two. Swagger reverses a DDT attempt into a Northern Lights suplex for two. Swagger brings Dreamer up top, but Dreamer shoves him off and leaps off right into a kick. Dreamer reverses the gutwrench powerbomb into a jackknife pin for two. Dreamer heads up top and misses a frog splash! Swagger gets the Oklahoma Roll and pins the champ at 12:00!

Winner: Jack Swagger

Match Rating: *** Very impressive showing by both men. Swagger needed the win here and the fact he didn't need the powebomb is very key here.

Finlay again runs to the ring after the bell and nails Dreamer with the Shillelagh! Christian runs out and starts beating on Finlay, but Swagger throws Christian to the floor. Swagger turns and Finlay decks Swagger with the shillelagh! Finlay walks out as everyone else is laid out!

If Finlay is going to be this new badass, they need to give him back his old theme music. Taking out everybody with the shillelagh doesn't mesh well with hitting Hornswoggle's music afterward.

Vintage Heel Finlay

Posted By: Bill (Guest)  on June 16, 2009 at 11:16 PM

So either Finaly is now a tweener or full blown heel. Either or, Im glad he went back to his old ways with the bad attitude. Heel Finaly is much better suited for his character, plus he doesnt have that little spotlight worm Hornswoggle to look after.

great a finlay heel turn.how pointless.i smell a stupid ecw title reign for his old ass

So that's Christian's place post-ECW title reign?

Do they really have plans that big for this kid that he deserves a win over Christian?

You make it sound like Christian is getting buried. It's called elevating new talent, and something we need to see more of. Christian doesn't lose anything by losing that match.

i think finaly is better a heel

Christian was hardly buried in that match, it took all of the Hart Dynasty to take him down.

Not only that, but it was a great match to boot, four stars in my opinion. I've never seen Smith look that good.

***1/4??? what match were you watching???

Posted By: Guest#6737 (Guest)  on June 17, 2009 at 12:07 AM

Guys, I'm not saying that Smith doesn't need a boost, but think a little here... a win over the recent former world champ? That's too fast. It's something that should be built up to.

Not to mention, unless they're going to make a singles star out of him, it was a VERY pointless win.

Beating Christian should have been feud-ending victory that would push Smith into serious contention for the title, not a one-off throwaway curtain jerker.

Posted By: Scott B (Guest)  on June 17, 2009 at 01:02 AM

Not a back drop driver. You might want to watch a Morishima match.

Posted By: Guest#1018 (Guest)  on June 17, 2009 at 01:11 AM

So, all is well again between Mark Henry & Tony Atlas? They seem to be buddies again. What's up with that? And, I can admit the image of a massive Mark Henry carrying the limp body of Evan Bourne around the ring before slamming him to the mat had a certain homo-eroticism to it.

Posted By: NoirFan01 (Guest)  on June 17, 2009 at 01:39 AM

Christian lost through alot of interference. Stop bitching.

I still think it didn't hurt Christian at all, but I can't argue with this. It was a great TV match that could have been more were it part of a feud of some sort. From what happened, it looked like it was only an excuse for Finlay to rescue Christian after the loss and then turn on him, which could have been accomplished in other ways.

But I'm not complaining, since I still think it was a good match.

that bump Christian took on the ring apron when DH botched it was sick. I thought he mightve been legit hurt.

It seems WWE is trying the TNA "shades of grey" approach with ECW lately. I must admit it's been pretty good stuff. It makes the ECW title seem all the more important.

A finlay heel turn?
Why thats as far fetched as a vladamir kozlov face tu.......
Oh dear

Posted By: Guest#5655 (Guest)  on June 17, 2009 at 05:59 AM

Christian like Chris Jericho is talented enough that a few loses won't hold him back. Also since its a smaller roster on ECW everyone will lose matches all over the place. Except for Vladamir Koslov of course.

Posted By: Flyin' Bryan (Guest)  on June 17, 2009 at 06:57 AM

david hart smith is a big overhyped jlob the moves slow in the ring, botches simple spots and bland at best - that match with chrisitan was an abomination..writers here get impressed with low quality.

Posted By: sutt (Guest)  on June 17, 2009 at 06:59 AM

I know I may be jumping on the bandwagon late here, but I noticed last night just how good Christian's become. All his offense in the match was very, very crisp. He's come a long way as a worker

No Hurricane Helms tease, no buys.

Posted By: Elliot (Guest)  on June 17, 2009 at 09:43 AM

I just about destroyed my computer with the spit-take I did when Finlay kicked the SHIT out of everyone and then hit Hornswoggle's music. Someone should get fired for not thinking to bring back his badass music.

Interesting that all the heels won tonight, but they all made sense in their own context so I'm cool with it.

Christian is freaking amazing, he the Joe DiMaggio of good to great TV matches.

This comments made me laugh, like REALLY LOL. However, I don't agree that it's pointless. Finlay works better as a heel. Finlay was my favorite in the entire E until they turned him face. I didn't see ECW but just knowing he's heel or at the very least has him back at the top of my list again. Heel Finlay is one of the best characters ever. Doesn't say much and doesn't seem to care about anything other than beating people up. Hopefully, I get to see him drop someone inside the ring apron like he did to Matt Hardy when he first debuted on SD!

First people whine about the same old guys winning all the time, but when a young talent beats an established guy people whine about burying the established guy. Make up your minds! This isn't the NWO, where the older guys won ALL the time!

Geez!

note:smackdow and tna have both been puting great shows with great matches.........they are what wrestling should be........ecw and superstars do the best they can in 1 hour........which suprisingly is better than raw.........ive only seen 1 AAA show lately but that 1 show was better than the last 6 raws.........well mabey this weeks wasnt bad...but you have to remember the best match on raw was the 1 for the smackdown title..........and cmill is garbage....

God that urinagi on the apron was sick. Not sure who botched but Christian's lucky his elbow didn't pop.

This is the first time I really got to hear David speak and his lack of a British accent really caught me by surprise.

Vintage ECW! Great episode. Too bad RAW is stupider than ecer and Smackdown is the show for girls and kids under 12.

Am I the only one to notice how Smackdown has no credible faces? You can't run a show with Jeff Hardy and CM Punk and Rey Mysterio (all bums) as your only "main event" babyfaces!
