411's WWE Superstars Report 06.18.09
Posted by Rob McNew on 06.18.2009
Superstars takes a break from their very successful formula, and all of a sudden it feels like the return of Sunday Night Heat.
-Hosted by Michael Cole, Jerry "The King" Lawler, Jim Ross, Todd Grisham, Josh Mathews, & Matt Striker
Santino Marella vs. Chavo Guerrero
Santino gets a huge pop from the live crowd, and then cuts a typically hilarious promo where he gives credit to Santina for sending Vickie wee wee wee all the way home, and promises to administer a fate to Chavo worse than waking up every morning and seeing Chavo in the mirror. Oooh burn! Chavo attacks quickly pounding Santino down with a series of double axehandle, and then chokes him out on the second rope. European upper cut from Chavo is followed up by a choke with the boot in the corner. Santino cartwheels out of a beal surprising himself, and hits a clothesline to comeback. Chavo is right back firing Santino into the ringpost shoulder first. Back suplex from Chavo gets a two count, and he locks in the abdominal stretch. Santino counters out with an armdrag, but Chavo is right back firing him into the second turnbuckle. Chavo charges at Santino, but Santino ducks seeing Chavo run head first into the top buckle. Over the top fake laughter from Cole is followed by Santino sending Chavo to the floor. Santino goes out with a kick, but gets caught on the way back in with a boot from Chavo. Chavo goes for three amigos, but Santino blocks the third and hits a suplex of his own. Santino goes to the top rope, but hilariously cant get his balance so he goes to the second rope instead. He dives into the boot of Chavo, who then cradles Santino to pick up the victory at 3:52. Decent little comedy match, but when it comes to Santino wrestling if you've seen one you've seen them all. Chavo Guerrero (Pinfall-Cradle ½*)
-Recap of Trump buying Raw
Zack Ryder vs. Mike Williams
Uh oh, just when this show had the perfect formula they go and mess with it by adding a squash match. Ryder hits a hammerlock, and then rams Williams into the top buckle. Forearm from Ryder is answered by a dropkick from Williams. Williams hits a headlock takeover, but Ryder quickly counters into a back suplex. Ryder puts the boots to Williams, and then hits what amounts to a legdrop with Williams vertical. Ryder hits what Striker calls "The Zack Attack" to finish at 1:39. It's a one legged codebreaker on the back of the neck if you were curious. Winner: Zack Ryder (Pinfall-Zack Attack ¼*)
Eve Torres vs. Layla
Oh it's the feud no one wanted to see continue, continuing. Maria is the guest referee, and the most over person in the match, for those of you who care. Why oh why did Layla go back to the curly hair? Layla grabs an armwringer, and Eve counters into a hammerlock. Layla snap mares out, and hits a dropkick for a one count. Eve comes back with a forearm, and hits a shitty armdrag. What can be loosely described as a powerslam gets two for Eve, but Layla comes back with a kick to the knee for two. Layla locks in a modified spinning toehold, and then drops an elbow on the knee. Layla delivers a kick to the hamstring, but Eve is able to kick away to Layla. Eve hits a pair of clotheslines and a dropkick. Suplex from Eve gets two, and they trade kicks to the head. Eve hits a running hand spring moonsault for the win at 3:32. The finish looked incredible, but everything else was total garbage. Maria wants a post match handshake between the ladies, and Layla actually obliges without the obligatory beatdown. Winner: Eve Torres (Pinfall-Handspring Moonsault DUD)
Jack Swagger & The Hart Dynasty (w. Natalya) vs. Christian & The Colons
Carlito starts the match with Smith, and gets shoved into the corner on the lockup. Carlito fires with some right hands and tags in Primo who comes in with a double dropkick for two. Smith comes right back to regain control and tags in Swagger. Primo hits a dropkick, and tags in Christian who hits a springboard sunset flip for two. Christian hits a back elbow off the second rope for two, but Swagger is back with a double leg take down for two. Kidd tags in and fires Christian into the top buckle. Tag to Smith who hits a dropkick for two, and delivers a bodyslam. Smith dives off the second rope into boot and that allows Christian to tag in Primo. Primo hits a springboard crossbody for two, and then fires Smith to the floor. Kidd comes in, but gets backdropped over the top into Smith. Primo hits the ropes, but gets tripped up by Natalya. That allows Smith to come back in and regain control for the heels in the corner as we head to break. Back from commercial with Primo still in trouble locked in a side headlock from Swagger. Tag to Smith who hits a spinning neckbreaker for two, and makes the tag to Kidd who delivers a dropkick for two. Kidd locks in a front facelock, and makes the tag to Swagger who goes for a rollup by Primo is in the ropes. Primo bails to the floor, and gets a kick from Kidd for his trouble. Primo comes in with a shoulder to Swagger, and then jumps in with a sunset flip for two. He goes for the tag, but Swagger pushes him back to the heel corner. Tag to Smith who hits a powerslam for two, and then locks in a rear chinlock. Smith drives Primo into the corner, and makes the tag to Kidd who chokes out Primo with his boot. Primo hits the ropes and ducks a clothesline before both guys clothesline each other. Carlito tags in and delivers a knee lift to Kidd. Derailer from Carlito gets a two count, and that brings in Smith who gets a dropkick. Swagger attacks Carlito from behind, but gets chased to the floor by Christian. Primo clotheslines Smith outside, and Carlito catches Kidd with a backstabber after ducking a springboard clothesline which finishes at 12:05. Its starting to seem like every single Colon match has the exact same finish. This match was pretty much the definition of average. Winner: Christian & The Colons (Carlito pins Kidd-Backstabber **1/2)
-Huge step back this week. Hopefully that's because a lot of the Smackdown main event talent was working double duty this week with the Raw special, and not because they're trying to dial this show back.
That main event sounds perfectly good to me. I didn't get a chance to see the show but I plan on catching the main event on YouTube.
I really hope people don't start pitching a fit because we didn't have a 4 star match for one week on a show of taped dark matches that is intended to be the fourth show produced by the company.
Oh the inevitably bitchy IWC.

"The finish looked incredible, but everything else was total garbage."
Then you weren't even watching the match. Layla worked Eve's leg better than any male wrestler in WWE and TNA combined in the last four fucking years. If you are going to rate the match, WATCH the damn thing.

ugh, a flawless divas match gets shit on. That was some great action and Layla actually worked the leg for most of it. Sorry it didn't involve Mickie James or Beth Phoenix to keep it "watchable"

She dropped some elbows on Eve's leg and pulled on it.
And then it ended up meaning nothing as Eve completely ignored it at the end, running and flipping with a "bad" leg.
Yeah, real great match.

I gotta say that Diva's match was pretty swank for 3 mins.

" It's a one legged codebreaker on the back of the neck if you were curious. "
It's closer to the Playmaker than a Codebreaker

FYI, Eve sold the leg right before and after the flip, but like all wrestlers, she used the "fight through the pain to win the match" shtick. Even JR mentioned she was hobbling on one leg, so I stick by it being a great match.

Seems to me if you took out the pointless squash match it wouldn't look half so bad. Still better to put in a squash on top of 3 matches then make one of your three a squash, which was always the big fear.
Anyway, I think a combo of the big Raw (and expect that kind of effect next week too) and ECW getting the headline spot (From WWE's PoV that means not having as big stars from the other brands)

So, the heel works the leg all match and the face blows it off at the finish eh?
Yeah, typical WWE and a textbook example of Match Psychology Failure.

NO The Miz or Matt Hardey?
Don't care.

The "Zack Attack"? Sweet! Vintage Saved By the Bell!!

Gotta give props for Eve for that move she pulled off at the end! Not many people would expect it from Eve, but she executed it perfectly! I would love to see any diva pull that off (i.e. Kelly Kelly or even Maryse)! Either than that, it was a good match, not perfect, but good! Both Eve and Layla have come a long away, and I am sure with more experience, they'll be even better!

The main event didn't feel like Sunday Night Heat to me.
The status and layout of this show was complained about before the first episode ever aired. I think that is a telling statement about the petulant greed that is prevalent throughout the industry and society as a whole. Can we not learn to be content and satisfied?
That is not to say for everyone to accept the bare minimum, but when "Superstars = Heat" comparisons start flying out, it may be time to adjust your expectations. So what if it does turn out to be like Heat? Will people complain until we're back to the point of having only 2 shows a week?

Didn't see it but it doesn't sound like a horrible show, just a little bland. It would have been horrible/Heat-esque if there had been a bunch of stupid backstage skits going on that last longer than most of the matches.

I have to disagree with your critique of the Layla/Eve match. They looked good and had a nice little match.Eve even did a decent, though a little spotty, job of selling Layla's offense on her legs. This was easily a two star match,I would give it 2 and a qaurter.
Posted By: fanboi13 (Guest) on June 19, 2009 at 09:50 AM
Definietly disagree with the rating of Eve vs Layla, that was pretty good at least 2 stars.
Posted By: guest (Guest) on June 19, 2009 at 11:06 AM
Amen on the Divas match, Rob. Trying hard doesn't = a good match. Also not equaling a good match is one single good looking move after 3 minutes of crap or running across the ring just fine when your leg was worked over the whole match.
Posted By: Guest#0320 (Guest) on June 19, 2009 at 11:32 AM
Are you kidding me? The Divas match was very good for a 3+ match. Wasn't sure if that was Layla or Ole Anderson out there working Eve's Leg. Give the ladies some love for a solid match.
The main event was pretty good too. The Colons Rock!
WOO Woo Woo!

The divas match was better than most that we see on raw these days, and i totally disagree with your review of it. It was crisp and clean, with no blown spots, and the 'shitty armdrag' you descibed actually looked like a realistic armdrag instead of an over the top, telgraphed armdrag where the guy taking the move jumps far too high into the air to make it look realistic.
Cant help but think if it was a guy working the leg like layla was during this match you'd be commenting on the great psychology of the match. Hats off to Layla and Eve for putting on a great little 3 minute match.

Tag matches generally have the same formula. The Colons are a tag team.
Wanna play connect the dots?
Main-event was very nice, and the crowd loved it. Why are you bitching?

Layla continues to do a real good job with in ring psychology. Shes real short in real life, and she always works the girls legs. Unfortunately for her, those shes wrestling with forget their legs were worked on. Eve is just so bland and generic. The finisher was solid.

WOO WOO WOO!

I wouldn't say the women's match was great by any means but it served its purpose for a 3 minute match. And yeah I'm starting to like Layla more and more as a wrestler
Posted By: Guest#9191 (Guest) on June 19, 2009 at 07:51 PM
Layla/Eve was WAY better than that crap Maryse and Kelly Kelly did a few weeks ago on RAW.
The match was shockingly decent. Layla is developing well and Eve's finisher was sweet.
