411's ECW on Sci-Fi Report 6.23.09
Posted by Michael Bauer on 06.23.2009
Five men look to make a statement heading into the ECW Scramble Match... but none make a statement as big as The Hurricane!
Welcome to the ECW on Sci-Fi! As always, I am Michael Bauer, your 411 ECW Re-capper.
We cut right to the opening video and head down to Josh Matthews and Matt Striker at ringside. At tonight, we have Christian and Dreamer teaming to face Swagger and Mark Henry in the main event.
Evan Bourne vs. Tyson Kidd (with The Hart Dynasty)
Bourne still has his ribs taped up to sell the beatings at the hands of Mark Henry the past two weeks and we see him getting trounced last week. Mat Striker breaks out all the nicknames, all of which are true. The Stampeding Bulldog has always been their team name, so it fits here. The bell rings and they lock up as Matt Striker tries to make video game cheat codes. Kidd backs Bourne into the corner and attacks the gut. Bourne whipped, but he reverses and is back dropped onto the ring apron. Bourne backs Kidd up, but Smith and Natalya get on the ring aprons and get thrown out of the match. Kidd gets clotheslined to the floor and here comes Air Bourne! Kidd gets tossed into the ring and kicks out after a two count. Bourne gets shoved back into the corner and Kidd with a field goal kick to the ribs. Kidd locks in a ground abdominal stretch, almost like a modified crossface. Kidd lifts him into a back suplex, but Bourne shifts his weight and lands on Kidd for a two count. Kidd stomps away on Bourne's ribs and throws him hard into the turnbuckle. Kidd lifts Bourne on drops him on the top rope, getting a two count. Kidd whips Bourne again, but Bourne ducks to nail Kidd in the gut and hits a cross body. Bourne rolls up Kidd for two and firs away with the stiff kicks. Kidd grabs the ropes and get the foot up, but Bourne flips him to the apron. Kidd misses his springboard and Bourne hits a hurricarana for two. Kidd shoves off Bourne and comes off the ropes, but is nailed with a huge knee lift to the face. Bourne heads up top and hits the Shooting Star Press for the three count at 5:25.
Winner: Evan Bourne
Match Rating: **1/2 Nice little match, definitely wish it was a few minutes longer.
Josh and Matt talk about Finlay coming back and using his cheap shots on Christian and Tommy Dreamer. We see video of Finlay stopping a two on one against Christian, then nailing him with the shillelagh. We the see him do the same to Dreamer… and then Swagger. Finlay walks backstage, apparently as he walks towards the ring and we go to a commercial.
Finlay vs. Zach Ryder
So forget having something to say like Striker thought. Or not… Finlay comes out to explain what his problem is with Christian and Dreamer. He says that everyone forgets that they injured his eye with their fight backstage that he tried to break up. He says they never called, just texted him to say they are sorry. But sorry doesn't pay the bills and it doesn't help hi support his family. He says it is an eye for an eye and they at the Bash…. Then he gets interrupted by Zach Ryder. Zach says he shouldn't look ahead to The Bash, when he has to face Ryder tonight. Woo… woo… woo… You Know It! We head to another commercial.
We come back with the match joined I progress and Zach hides by getting to the ropes. Finlay with a neck wrench and he grabs the teeth of Zach. Finlay takes Zach down and gets a one count. Zach backs Finlay in the corner and hits a few shoulder blocks. Greco Roman knuckle lock applied and Finlay with an arm wrench, followed by an elbow to the… well… elbow. Finlay brings Zach down with a key lock and nearly is counted down on the mat. Finlay continues to work the arm with stomps and he follows with a European uppercut. Zach nails Finlay with a shot and backs him into the corner, but Finlay grabs the arm and takes him down. Finlay has his whip reversed and they clonk heads, looking to effect Finlay's eye. Zach focuses on the head, dragging it on the ropes and getting a two count. Zach locks in a chin lock, but Finlay gets up until Zach takes the leg out and brings him back down. Finlay gets up again and Zach targets the eye to bring him down. Zach grabs at the face and Finlay keeps grabbing his eye. Zach hits a knee to the face and jams his hand right into Finlay's eye with a chin lock applied. Finlay rolls out with an arm drag, but Zach takes him down quickly. Zach goes to the second rope, but Finlay gets his left foot up. Finlay hits a series of clotheslines on his good side and connects with the rolling senton for a two count. Finlay whips Zach off the ropes and hits a back body drop. Finlay walks right into bring thrown down, sending him into the second rope. The ref checks on Finlay as Zach removes the turnbuckle pad. The ref goes to fix it and Finlay grabs Zach with a single leg takedown and rolls him up for the three, maybe using the tights.
Winner: Finlay
Match Rating: ** Pretty good, but the ending was really weak for Finlay, one eye or not, when he fights for the ECW Title on Sunday.
We get the Raw Rebound from last night, which is the Last man Standing Match between Orton and Triple H. We then go to the Trump and McMahon bullshit that ended with their Did You Know… the most viewers in seven years! And it's true, did you see that 4.5 rating? And then the aftermath of the Orton/McMahon situation, bringing back the Three Stages of Hell, not seen in over six years.
Josh and Matt talk about how personal this is and then go into a review of the matches for The Bash. I honestly can not wait for Cena and The Miz.
Matt Striker is now in the ring with his chalkboard to go over the rules of the Championship Scramble, in which the ECW title will be defended under at The Bash. He reminds us all that the current champion does not need to be pinned and that the final pinfall before the twenty minutes are over will determine who leaves as the ECW Champion.
Backstage, Gregory Helms is backstage with Mark Henry when a crate drops on some production guy. Gregory Helms disappears while we aren't look at him and The Hurricane comes out to lift the crate off the guy! He disappears with a whoosh and Gregory Helms is back, asking Mark again how he feels about his match tonight. Mark looks confused as all hell and we go to commercial without a full answer.
Jack Swagger and Mark Henry vs. Christian and Tommy Dreamer
Heh, I actually caught Swagger doing his push-ups this week. It does look right with his entrance. Mark Henry puts the "Ow" in Powerful… gotta love Striker. The bell rings and Swagger starts with Christian and lockup with Christian getting backed into the corner several times without ever having a clean break. Swagger goes low and uses an amateur takedown on Christian and then goes to the waistlock. Christian reveres to a headlock, but doesn't let go coming off the ropes. Christian ducks under a few clothesline and hits a spinning heel kick for two. Dreamer tagged in and hits a double axe handle to the arm. Dreamer with an arm drag takedown, but Swagger with clubs to escape and he tags in Henry. Henry whips Dreamer into the ropes and gets hit with drop toe hold into the turnbuckle. Henry goes to the floor as Swagger charges and gets back dropped to the floor. Dreamer goes to the apron and hits the cannonball roll on Henry as Christian dives off the top and crashes on Swagger. We head to a commercial at 3:00.
Back at 7:15 and Christian is getting pounded by Swagger in the corner, but Christian fires back and hits a diving spinning uppercut. Dreamer gets the tags and hits a swinging neckbreaker and whips Swagger into the turnbuckle. Swagger pushes off the bulldog, but Dreamer ducks a clothesline and hits a neckbreaker. Swagger locked in the tree of woe and Dreamer hits the basement dropkick. Christian gets in it wit the ref for some reason and Henry nails Dreamer from behind. Swagger stomps away and tags in Henry. Henry stands on the chest of Dreamer. Dreamer throws into the ropes and Henry crushes him with a bear splash. Dreamer leaned on the ropes as Swagger is tagged in and he snaps Dreamer's neck back. Dreamer locked in a chinlock, but Swagger decides to just bash his head in the turnbuckle. Dreamer somehow catches Swagger with a spinebuster and in comes Henry and Christian off of tags. Christian with punched and clothesline, but he gets shoved off. Henry walks into a boot to the face and a pair of missile dropkicks takes him down. Henry catches Christian and nearly gets the World's Strongest Slam, but Christian slips out and goes for a sunset flip. Swagger gets a tag in as Henry looks annoyed and tries to drop down on Christian, but misses. Swagger rolls in and tries the gutwrench powerbomb, but Christian slips out and hits the Killswitch! Christian goes for the cover, but Tony Atlas puts Swagger's leg under the rope. Dreamer comes over and decks Tony Atlas. The ref forces Dreamer to his corner and Mark Henry grabs Christian, ramming him back first into the ring post. Christian rolled back in and Swagger hits the gutwrench powerbomb for the three count at 13:00. Henry grabs Dreamer and hits the World's Strongest Slam and then does the same to Swagger! Henry is the only one standing as we end the broadcast.
Winners: Jack Swagger and Mark Henry
Match Rating: *** Well done for the Tag Team Match, but I just don't see how this does anything to make Dreamer's reign legit.
and yes...the Hurricane is back. Now I hope there is a serious segment for the cruiserweights. and I liked what they are doing with Zach Ryder. ECW >>>> RAW (with 4.5 ratings)

Any one Else notice Bourne used the Shadows Over Hell

How did they get that Helms change done so fast and come to think of it, how did they get Santino coming on screen last night just as his "sis" left the screen?
Posted By: Viper Fontaine (Guest) on June 24, 2009 at 01:58 AM
you know what was so funny at the near the end of the match was striker call
christian finisher the killswitch engage instead of the killswitch
Posted By: O.J Mendez (Guest) on June 24, 2009 at 02:12 AM
Striker calls it the Killswitch, but when Christian hits (or almost hits it and Striker thinks he's got it), he says "Killswitch Engage". It's a pun.

"but I just don't see how this does anything to make Dreamer's reign legit"
Well considering that would be impossible to do, who gives a $hit. Dreamer's matches are aweful and while he was rewarded for basically being a company guy for so many years, his "reign" will (or at least should) end this sunday.
Posted By: Common Sense (Guest) on June 24, 2009 at 06:08 AM
No actually it's just a way of saying "Christian is hitting his finisher" that matches the context of the name. When you push an alleged killswitch, it becomes engaged.
Posted By: Paul (Guest) on June 24, 2009 at 07:00 AM
I think he said Christian has the Killswitch engaged, which pretty much means that he has his opponent set up for it.

"bringing back the Three Stages of Hell, not seen in over six years."
Didn't Vickie put Triple H in a three stages of hell match?

Said the same thing about Hardy's WWE title reign.

Unless instead of pre-recorded segments, their different people! Santina is actually Santino's evil twin brother Claudius who wants to make Santino look like a fool to get his inhertance and the hurricane is actually Rosey after Kristie Alley showed him slim-fast and Jenny Craig, and has since dedicated his life to saving people and showing them the way Scientolgy!
Praise Lord Xeno!

That was a triple jeopardy match. The one with the same wrestler against different opponents in each of the matches

I need to go back to TNA

On Finlay's match: "Pretty good, but the ending was really weak for Finlay, one eye or not, when he fights for the ECW Title on Sunday."
He won the match with a hand full of tights. He's doing the tweener thing similar to CM Punk. Yeh, he clocked Dreamer & Christian but for good reason (in Finlay's mind). I think the cheap pin he got against Ryder worked.

I think MAYBE they did some video editing there. MAYBE. Just guessing.

I dug the Hurricane bit. I've always been a mark for the superhero schtick, especially when it's played like its real, i.e. Rock looking up as Helms "flies" away.
Good wrestling, too, and I never thought I'd see the day where I enjoy Mark Henry as a wrestler.

I hope Christian Wins the Title Back on Sunday i Could Watch him Feud with Swagger For ever

nothing i would want to see exepct bourne vs kidd
Posted By: tna fan (Guest) on June 24, 2009 at 03:42 PM
One thing that bugged me was the complete no sell of Finlay using the tights by the announcers, which could've made Ryder look a little bit better. Nice to see Ryder wasn't completely buried by the ol' Irish bastard. That Hurricane bit was really strange, especially if it doesn't go anywhere.

there is no way the tag match was better than bourne/kidd
