Shelton gets a rematch with Yoshi Tatsu, Tommy Dreamer joins Abraham Washington, and Kozlov faces off with Captain Charisma for the number one contendership.
-Taped from Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield, CA
-Hosted by Josh Mathews & Matt Striker
Nikki Bella (w. Brie Bella) vs. Katie Lea Burchill
The Bella's introduce themselves to the crowd, and decide to introduce themselves to the crowd. Thanks for that ladies. Katie sporting a new look which reminds me a bit of Sherri Martel with the makeup. Katie throws Nikki to the floor, and then dives onto her from the apron. Back inside Katie goes for the cover getting a two count, and then throws Nikki into the mat. Katie continues the assault sending Nikki into the top buckle, and the choking her in innovative fashion while standing on the second rope. Katie hits a backbreaker for two, but Nikki is right back with a wristlock takedown. Dropkick connects for Nikki, but Kaite comes back to dump her over the top rope. Katie catches her coming in and delivers a neckbreaker for two. Katie boots Nikki out of the ring, but with the refs back turned Brie switches with her. Brie comes in and delivers an X-Factor to pick up the win at 2:33. Katie dominated the entire match, before the Bellas went Killer Bees on her. Nothing special, but the Bellas are nice to look at. Winner: Nikki Bella (Pinfall-X-Factor *)
-Recap of the Yoshi Tatsu debut victory over Shelton Benjamin.
Yoshi Tatsu vs. Shelton Benjamin
Shelton is a little more serious this week after getting embarrassed last week at the hands of the new guy. Shelton hits a firemans carry takedown early, and then smugly laughs at Tatsu. Shelton drives Tatsu into the corner, and then delivers a forearm. Tatsu fights back out of the corner with an elbow, and then delivers a dropkick. Big splash attempt from Tatsu meets the knees of Shelton, and Benjamin follows that up with a short clothesline. Snap mare from Shelton is followed by an elbow drop. Shelton goes for a neckbreaker, but it is countered by Tatsu into a backslide for two. Shelton bails to the floor to regroup as we head to break. Back from break Tatsu hits a crossbody off the ropes for two, but then comes up empty on a dropkick attempt. Shelton goes for a powerbomb but when Tatsu blocks it he simply drops him back on the top buckle. That gets a two count, and Shelton locks in a rear naked choke. Shelton mounts Tatsu and delivers a series of headbutts, and then grabs a reverse chinlock. Tatsu comes out of it with a snap mare counter, and then rolls up Shelton for two. Series of kicks from Yoshi followed by a double knee in the corner. Yoshi rolls Shelton out of the corner, and hits a spin kick for a two count. Shelton goes for a Stinger splash which misses, and Tatsu hits a springboard spinning heel kick for a two count! Wow, I thought that was the finish. Yoshi charges into a knee from Shelton who then delivers a release belly to belly suplex. Both guys block kicks, but Shelton hits paydirt after ducking a heel kick and that finishes at 10:26. Fantastic match to get Shelton his win back without making the new guy look bad at all. Fine job by all involved. Winner: Shelton Benjamin (Pinfall-Paydirt ***)
-Kozlov vignette. "I have domi-nate everywhere, ECDouble will be no different"
Ezekiel Jackson vs. Jack Meridol
Zeke lives! He even gets an old school inset pretaped promo. Merido looks like the jobbingest jobber who ever jobbed. Zeke immedieatly unloads on the kid, slamming him into the corner and then locking in a bearhug. Meridol tries to elbow out, so Zeke just squashes him into the corner. Meridol tries to get some offense in, but gets immediately thrown away like yesterday's garbage to quote the great Gorilla Monsoon. Zeke nearly takes the kids head off with a clothesline, and then mercifully finishes things with a Rock Bottom at 1:46. You know, he sucks, but watching big guys kill jobbers never gets old for some reason. Winner: Ezekiel Jackson (Pinfall-Rock Bottom ¼*)
-In the back some girl nearly falls to her death, but thankfully Hurricane is there to save the day.
-Abraham Washington is out to host the second edition of his talk show, and says his ratings are hotter than Snoop Dogg in a hot air balloon. Groan. He says since he has the top talk show he needs a top guest so he brings out his guest ECW Champion Tommy Dreamer. Huge ECW chant for Tommy. Abe tells Tommy he's the biggest superstar in ECW history, and unfortunately he means that literally. Fat jokes on Tommy are always good for a laugh. He says last week he had twins, but this week his guest looks like he might be carrying twins. Abe asks Tommy how gastric bypass is working out, and Tommy says its working out about as well as this talk show. BURN! Abe tells Tommy he's the comedian and he'll handle the jokes. Abe asks Tommy what its like to be an ECW legend. Tommy says ECW is his life, and he's so proud of all the ECW stars. Most of the guys he mentions though are guys from the new era. Abe throws in a few more fat jokes as he rehashes Tommy's career, and asks who his toughest opponent. He says he'll take a guess first, and says it might be Jenny Craig. Tommy says that's pretty funny from a guy who looks like he painted his hair on tonight. Abe says his hair is fresh, but Tommy wouldn't know anything about that. Washington says tonight we have a match between Christian and Vladimir Kozlov, and the winner faces Tommy at Night of Champions. He asks Tommy who would he prefer to win, and Tommy doesn't hesitate answering Christian. Wrong answer Tommy, because that brings out Vladdy. Dreamer and Kozlov goes eye to eye, and Washington says they need to be properly introduced. Washington introduces Kozlov as being the man Tommy will face at Night of Champions, and that ends things. This was about one thousand times better than last week, but that didn't take much.
Number One Contender Match: Vladimir Kozlov vs. Christian
Tommy moves to the commentary table for the main event. I'm sure he's just there as an observer and in no way will get involved. Kozlov pushes Christian into the corner off the lockup, and then armdrags him out of a second lockup. Kozlov hits a fireman's carry, and then goes for a powerslam. Christian slides down the back to counter, and then hits a back elbow. Christian delivers an open handed slap which just serves to piss the Russian off. Kozlov delivers a kick, and then charges at Christian who pulls down the top rope sending Kozlov to the floor. Christian charges, but runs into the shoulder of Kozlov who then backdrops him to the floor. Kozlov heads outside, and drives Christian into the apron, before rolling him back inside for two. Kozlov busts out the Canadian backbreaker submission, and then a huge fall away slam for two. Kozlov grabs a waist lock, and then delivers a forearm to the lower back. Kozlov grabs a torture rack, but Christian counters and goes for the Killswitch. Kozlov blocks that so Christian goes for a DDT out of the corner which is blocked. Christian hits the ropes, and Kozlov again throws him over the top to the floor. Kozlov heads outside, and tries to post Christian, but its blocked and he meets the post himself. Christian hits a missile dropkick back inside, and that gets a two count. Kozlov hits a modified backbreaker out of a torture rack for two, but then goes for a headbutt into the corner. Christian moves, and Kozlov runs face first into the exposed top turnbuckle. Christian hits the killswitch from there to finish at 5:35. So its Dreamer vs. Christian at Night of Champions. I actually would have preferred Kozlov, but I'm one of the internet's only Kozlov marks Winner: Christian (Pinfall-Killswitch **1/4)

I think the reason this show works as well as it does is because it's the most like an old-school wrestling shows. Name another show that has new stars debuting every couple of months, actually has jobbers, and features a show within a show, a la Piper's Pit, the Snake Pit, the Barbershop, etc, etc.
That said, Shelton's performances the last two weeks, coupled with watching the Macho Madness DVDs, really called to mind Randy's early matches in the WWE, specifically his debut match. Macho was facing Rick McGraw, and the crowd was quiet at first, but through the sheer force of Macho's heelishness, they were cheering for McGraw's every move by the end, and chanting for him, not unlike the "Yoshi" chants I heard this week.
Speaking of the Macho DVD, in regards to his awesome matches with Ted DiBiase, why doesn't Ted Jr use that fall-back fist drop? He'd need to perfect the cocky-ass grin first, so to better brandish it while doing the fist drop, but it's a great heelish move and a tribute to his "legacy", all in one.

WOW! Much better than last week and Yoshi Tatsu is pretty good,Zeke i like for some reason and give it up for the star of the show Abe Washington

What is the point of Abraham Washington? I really hope he gets future endeavoured soon...

OK, so Shelton got his win back. Are you happy now?

Hopefully the shelton-apologetists will stop whining now.
at least until the next time they feel he gets slighted.

Good show this week.
Now that Shelton won this week, all of the whiners will shut the fuck up for awhile. But it was a great match between Shelton and Yoshi.
Kozlov is slowly improving as a wrestler. I have to give him credit there.

He's money.

I am also a Kozlov mark, and a Khali mark ... its a lonely world

What happened to Kozlov's dominance? I remember when he was in PPV main events. Ever sense the elimination chamber, he's been losing more and more often. I think they should go back to the near unstoppable Kozlov.

These Abraham Washington segments are brutal. Serious wrestlecrap candidate of the year. ECW itself is pretty bad. Yoshi "worst entrance music in wrestling history" Tatsu is playing the role Kaval should be playing. Why give it to an awesome, experienced WRESTLER like Low Ki, when you can bring in a green rookie who you can throw racial insults at. Typical WWE. Pathetic.
Posted By: Dr Know (Guest) on July 09, 2009 at 09:12 PM
It'd be cool if Yoshi's finisher was swallowing a turtle shell and then spitting fire at his opponent.

he does, look in any tag match and he will always pull it out during the face in peril part, it just always gets no-sold by the announcers.

Yoshi ain't really a rookie. He's 32 and was wrestling in New Japan according to the internetz

Kozlov should have gone through...dude knows sambo, surely that counts for something. Plus, if booked bell, he'd a fucking beast.

Low Ki is currently injured, isn't he? If the role is intended to Low Ki as you claimed, "pathetic" WWE can't do nothing about that because he's ....well, injured. WWE had to bring in the "rookie" because they need new stars for ECW immediately following the ECW talent raid.
Hey, I'm far from a WWE apologist but just think before you start trashing WWE. Check your facts or you'll risk sounding like an idiot. Dumbass.

I for one would love for DiBiase Sr. to come back as a full time manager for Ted Jr. and maybe even Cody. He could play the domineering father role and just clown Jr. all the time. Half-way serious but they could turn Jr. face after Sr. puts him to sleep with the Million Dollar Dream and shoves $ in his mouth but I know the fans would cheer for that.

First.... am I the only one that thought there is a striking similarity between Big Zeke tonight and Ahmed Johnson? Massive black man that uses some power moves and wears bright red ring attire?
To all of those who whined about Shelton losing last week in a fluke victory, you can shut up now. Great two weeks to get people to care about Tatsu. Great job by Shelton. He can mini feud with someone and then move onto the ECW title.
I LOVE Abraham Washington. I don't know what everybody hates about the guy. The reason last week's segment was brutal? It was the damn Bella Twins. They are hot but they are anti-charisma. They were awful and it's difficult for a debuting performer with no track record to be counted on to get over two hot chicks with no personality. This week was a thousand times better because the crowd cares about Dreamer so when Washington takes shots at him, they care. But still, Dreamer isn't exactly a masterful promo. Give Washington time. He's very green but could be a great reason to watch the show in time.

The same people who were bitching about Kozlov getting clean win over Taker are now bitching he cleanly lost against...Christian (while Dreamer vs Kozlov would have sucked balls).
I bet you the same people would have bitch about Kozlov being the ECW Champ.

Yoshi pulled out about 4 moves during the whole of their match. Let's not get ahead of ourselves, he's by no means TAKA, let alone Funaki, yet. Shelton deserves props though for commanding the match so well that Yoshi recieved a great response from the crowd.
Get Sheamus back on the show; who gives a shit about Ahmed Johnson-lite or some fat ass fence-sitting paint-drying champ?
Oh, and if creatives intentions are to make Abe a heel, the segments are fine; let's hope he can actually wrestle though.

The Shelton/Yoshi match was very fun to watch and the crowd were into both guys but the Yoshi chants in his second match should be noted. I want more...
I don't want to see Katie jobbed out to novice wrestlers.
Christian back with the ECW title? That's what we all want to see.

Of course people were cheering for Yoshi. His music is awesome, and they wanted to hear it again. Never before have I been disspaointed by Benjamin winning.

Haha. Yeah. I remember when Ted Jr. did the fist drop a few months ago on raw and Cole said it was shades of his mentor, Randy Orton. Michael Cole - you are a tit.

Bella twins are amusing. Attractive twins wrestling should be hot but somehow they fail to be.
Yoshi/ Benjamin was good. Yoshi is talented and Benjamin is a trusted hand at getting guys over. I know the IWC hate the lack of Benjamin push generally and others hate the bitching about it but it seems the best spot to me. Benjamin is clearly trusted to enhance guys and respected for it in wwe(based on appearances and programmes he is in) and Yoshi can do the same in ecw. A Shelton/Yoshi programme followed by a Shelton ecw title run and a mid-card ecw programme for Yoshi would rebuild/establish the pair of them and be good for business.
Big Zeke has been squashing people in fcw, this was the same...it was meh..he has a look and body to do it and it is wwe style...I just do not know if he does it well enough to get higher than the ecw mid-card.
Kozlov/Christian was a good solid piece of work.Dreamer was imho good on commentary in putting them over, and used an old school "build the heel so it looks impressive if you beat him" style. Christian could easily slot into the SD upper mid-card/ tag-team scene. Kozlov will benefit from Regal/Dreamer/ Christian/Shelton being around him and a dominant win over Dreamer when he is ready to be moved to the mid-card elsewhere would work.
I am really enjoying ecw/fcw work atm as you get to connect early, and this must be the wwe approach.

I can't believe Josh Matthews said that Ezekiel was brought to ECW as part of Tiffany's New Superstar Initiative. Are they trying to cover up the supplemental draft or something?
