411's WWE Smackdown Report 07.24.09
Posted by Scott Rutherford on 07.24.2009

Welcome one and all to your Smackdown recap. Obviously I'm not the usual guy as Truss was given his "future endeavors" marching papers and I was the most available spare body to do the fill in. Some of you may remember me form my previous fill-in run at the end of last year, which annoyed some because I used the word fuck on a few occasions.

So to get it all out of the way….fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck.

Mercifully I'm only here for this week, as we hopefully will have the new regular dude locked in for next week. I wonder if Scott Keith is looking for a new gig….

Anyway just quickly, this will not be a hugely in depth analysis of Smackdown! As circumstances meant I am watching and writing this at 3:30am Australian time as the original airing did not record for me. Since I've been up near 24 hours as it is, my sleep means more than full match recaps.

Anyway "LIVE" from Richmond, Virginia it's….

Photobucket

Highlight package of last weeks tag team main event setting up CM Punk vs. Rey Mysterio as your main event for tonight.

First up is Jeff Hardy. CM Punk said he was going to be a statistic and a bad influence but Punk will hate it more when Hardy becomes World Heavyweight Champion. Punk preaches about the straight edge lifestyle and shoves it down everyone's throat. After the Night of Champions the preaching will be over. As for Chris Jericho, he better stop worrying about who's going to be his partner this weekend because tonight your walls will come tumbling down.

Match #1 - Jeff Hardy vs. Chris Jericho
Lock up to start comes up with Jericho on top. Hardy fights back and Jericho takes a powder but Hardy is right on him and runs him into the outside barricade twice. Back in and Hardy keeps control with kicks in the corner. Jericho fights back but an Irish whip is reversed into an elbow for Jeff. Hardy gets his own whip reversed but comes out with a head scissors, which propels Jericho to the outside. Jeff tries a drop kick threw the ropes but Jericho catches his legs and pulls him out and we head to a commercial break…

…back in and Jericho is in charge with a modified chinlock. Hardy fights up, Jericho attempts a clothesline but misses and Jeff gets a cross body block for 2. Jericho quickly gets the upper hand again with the running enziguri, which only gets a 2 count. Jericho goes all dick-ish and taunts Jeff with kicks to the head to keep him down. Hardy starts to fight back with some right hands and whips Jericho to the corner but misses the charge; Jericho with a 2nd rope elbow drop but his cover is broken because he has his feet on the ropes. Guillotine under the 2nd rope keeps Jericho in control but still only gets a 2 count. Rear chin lock keeps Jericho in control but Hardy fights back, clothesline, atomic drop, double leg drop on the crotch and a seated dropkick only get 2. Flapjack lays out Jericho for the swanton attempt but Hardy misses, Jericho nails the lionsalt but only gets 2. Wall of Jericho gets blocked; second attempt gets countered into a small package for Hardy, which only gets 2 again. Hardy nails his twisting reverse kick which knocks Jericho to the corner and Hardy goes for the rope assisted seated drop kick, Jericho blocks it into the Walls, Hardy makes the rope but Jericho keeps coming with a catapult to the corner but Hardy land feet first on the rope and nails Whisper in the Wind for a close 2 count. Twist of Fate gets countered into the Codebreaker but the impact sends Hardy to the floor. Jericho goes out to bring him back in and only gets a 2 count. Jericho starts getting frustrated and lays the big kicks to Hardy who hits the Twist of Fate and goes up for a Swanton but Jericho crotches him. Attempted 2nd rope suplex by Jericho gets blocked, Jericho crashes to the mat and Hardy nails the Swanton for the 3 count and the win. ***

(Winner: Jeff Hardy by pinfall - Decent match as you would expect from these two as they pulled out great blocks and reversals to the other mans big moves. If the rumoured Hardy time-off does happen post-PPV it will be a huge pity as he's crazily over and has finally started to erase the sloppiness form his ring work. )

- Out back we see Michelle McCool musing about her greatness. She runs down all the past champs before Melina interrupts and advises her that she'll take her rematch at Night of Champions.

- Highlights package of John Morrison making him seem like the second coming of Shawn Michaels.

Match #2 - The Great Khali vs. Mike Knox
Lock up as Khali quickly overpowers and makes Knox his bitch, Kane's pyro hits and Knox takes advantage of the distraction and pounds on Khali with some kicks and punches but Khali quickly recovers and nails the Punjabi Plunge for the win. Post match Kane makes his way down for the challenge but backs off before getting into the ring. DUD.

(Winner: The Great Khali by pinfall - Total squash as the usual complaints remain. The push for a broken down giant who can barely walk and the oft-pushed Kane who never goes above lower main event status while Knox, a big monster with a great look and decent skills gets murdered for storyline advancement.)

Cryme Tyme is out back with Eve Torres as they pimp the Allied Powers DVD with a little help from Jesse who reminds us that he indeed does come from Badstreet USA. The Hart Dynasty interrupts as Natalya tells Eve she'll take care of her later tonight.

- Dolph Ziggler with Maria is out to give us a heads up….after Night of Champion he will be the new Intercontinental Champion

Match #3 - Dolph Ziggler vs Finlay
Lock-up to begin as Finlay comes out on top and works Dolph into a corner for the clean break. Lock-up again and Ziggler this time goes behind to get an armbar but Finlay the veteran breaks that up with a vicious yank to the hair. Lock up again as Ziggler gets the side headlock working for a 2 count but a whip to the ropes goes astray as Finlay nails a big shoulderblock. Finlay tries a corner change but Dolph moves and Finlay posts his shoulder and Ziggler attacks the arm for the next few minutes/ Finlay finally gets the upper hand with a series of clotheslines and a cannonball for two. Finlay tries for the Celtic Cross but Ziggler blocks it and sends Finlay to the floor who quickly grabs Dolph and works him over the announce table. Maria gets up to check on Dolph and causes Fit to lose focus, ZigZag by Dolph helps him beat the count back in and claims the count out victory. *1/2

(Winner – Dolph Ziggler by count out: Not sure why they would be protecting Finlay other than planting the seeds for Ziggler's weekend match with Mysterio. Ziggler looks good and to compare him with Randy Orton, would not be out of place but with better ring sense and believability of ring work. I also like the pairing with Maria as he's a better fit for her than Santino personality-wise. )

- We see Jericho out back talking to Kane. We don't hear what they say but Jericho seems pleased enough.

- CM Punk is out to challenge the WWE Universe into seeing things his way. He's better than everyone in the audience because he's never touched a drug, popped up pill or drank any booze. People who cheer Jeff Hardy are slaves to the vices of his living in the moment. Punk feels sorry for you. He says its hard being straight edge and while it may be hard to quit, it's even harder to never do these things in the first place. Jeff Hardy is out now claiming that Punk's forgotten what its like to be human and that people can change. Punk refuses to be an enabler for Hardy and walks away from the confrontation.

Match #4 - Eve Torres vs Natalya
Eve takes control and quickly botches a side headlock takedown. Natalya keeps fighting back and nails an awesome power slam. They go up top as Natalya tries a belly-to-back suplex, Eve fights her off and gets a moonsalt for the win. DUD

(Winner - Eve Torres by pinfall: Putting chicks like Eve in with Natalya only makes it look completely stupid when she wins because you can plainly see Natalya slowing it down so Eve can keep up.)

- Jericho talks to The Great Khali about being his partner who counters it would be an honour to be unified world tag team champion but not with Jericho.

Match #5 - R-Truth vs. Charlie Hass
Haas gets no intro…should I even recap? Truth showboats before the lock-up and Haas shoves him down for being a freaky fag. Truth quickly goes on the offensive and when he does his showboating flippies from the corner he hurts his knee. Haas is like a shark to chum and doggedly attacks the knee at every chance and tries for a submission off a half-crab. Haas takes control towards the end only for R-Truth to hit the Rocker Dropper for the win. ½*
(Winner – R-Truth by pinfall: The annoying thing about this match was Truth's stop/start selling of the knee. He was convincing when he did it but would then hit his patent crazy stuff like nothing was wrong and then sell again. How hard would it have been for him to be grounded and use his other skills to get the win? )

- JR and Todd Grisham run down the card for Night of Champions.

Match #6 – CM Punk vs. Rey Mysterio – Non-Title Match
Punk gets control of the lock-up early and works on Rey's leg applying a grapevine leg lock. Rey delivers some quick kicks to the head to get out but Punk quickly battles back and gets a front face lock. Rey turns it into a test of strength and counters this into a small package for a quick 1 count. They jaw with each other some and Rey quickly kicks Punk's knee out but CM rams Rey into the corner post to keep control and a 2 count. Side headlock keeps Punk in control as a Rey rally is stoped by a shoulderblock. Punk shifts the work to the arm, Rey tries to counter it with something off the top rope but CM drops him across the top rope and to the floor. Rey tries to get back in but a baseball slide keeps him down as we head to a commercial break….

…back to the action as Punk is still in control with the armbar. Rey fights out with some more kicks but Punk keeps on top with a corner run, snap mere and a sick kick to Mysterio's back for a 2 count. Rey tries a charge but gets nailed with a tilt-a-whirl slam and Punk takes things to the mat with a key lock-armbar. Mysterio works his way out and they trade leg strikes but Punk still comes out on top and focuses in on the arm once again getting a close 2 count. Punk applies a submission hold which I have never seen before and since it's not called by either announcer I have no clue as to what it is (would like feedback on its name if anyone knows). Rey counters out with an armdrag. Punk charges to the corner but Rey nails a drop toe hold and out walks Dolph Ziggler.

Punk and Rey start trading leg strikes again, Mysterio takes the advantage with a 2nd rope springboard cross body block for 2, drop kick gets another 2. Head scissors sets up the 619 but Punks aware and backdrops Rey over the top rope but Rey hold firm and lands on the apron, drop the dime, Ziggler distracts Rey long enough for Punk to get the upper hand, Rey slips out of a suplex but wear the running knee to the head. Punk goes for a bulldog, but Rey escapes, and a 2nd 619 gets stopped by a headbutt to the mid-section. Punk throws Rey outside but Rey rolls through, comes back in off the tope rope, caught by Punk who tries to hit the G2Sleep, gets counter by Rey into a bulldog, 619 hits, splash and the count is broken by Ziggler for the DQ. Post match, Ziggler goes to work on Rey as Punk makes sure Rey doesn't rally and get the upper hand for too long, Hardy comes out for the save but Punk stops him and nails a sweet G2Sleep as we fade out….***1/2

(Winner – Rey Mysterio by DQ: Good match that would have been made the better if the PPV hard sell didn't kick in at the end. These two have good chemistry and they have a great 30 minute match in them if given the chance.)

Final Thoughts: The go home show before the PPV. SD! has been firing for the last couple of months and every reason to watch N.O.C's pretty much comes from here. Two good matches bookend the show but the stuff in the middle lags as it has nothing to do with the PPV and has no direction. Still extremely entertaining but cracks are there if they don't start suring up the undercard.

Very good show tonight. Hit all the rights spots, plus the show added a little clue as to who Jericho's partner will be, and I may have been the only one to catch the hint. Re-watch the Jericho/Khali segment-with the way that segment went down alluding to Sunday's tag title match, my guess is Chris Masters!!! Also, before people start bitching about Eve beating Natayla, just remember there is a difference between losing and jobbing.

I don't understand why Eve had a worse match tonight than she had with McCool in her wrestling debut months ago and with Layla last month on Superstars. You would think the better the opponent, the better than match would be, but it was the complete opposite.

Good article. I liked it.

That Divas match was pretty good at least 2 stars it wasn't a DUD

I love that Punk continues to get booed for saying all the right things. When he finally snaps it's going to be beautiful.

Usually I agree with this site when it comes to women wrestlers but tonight I have to comeplelty disagree this was a DUD I know they only had 2 minutes to work with but it still probably the worst 2 minutes of the show

The divas match wasnt a dud it was pretty good, the reviewer is just bias against Eve because she went over the talented Natalya.

You can't really expect R-Truth to sell his leg the whole match. He didn't break his leg he "tweaked" it. So he pushes through the pain hits the scissor kick with the other leg.

I agree the Divas wasn't a DUD. Eve is getting better and better. Natayla is WAY better thou.
2 top quality matches and Dolph vs Finaly was pretty good.

Punk is awesome, as is Hardy I can watch this feud forever! Threw in a lot of Jericho and its GOLD!

~_~

- - -

The strength of the Punk/Hardy storyline really carried the show well tonight as it gave us the two best matches & all the best segments, and the Rey / Ziggler stuff was very good as well. All of that basically outweighed anything bad about the show.

Michelle - Melina interaction was nice , I'm excited to see their
match @ NOC .
I hope Michelle Retains and the feud continues .

Eve - Natalya - DUD .
I don't know why Natalya could not carry Eve to a good match , Michelle managed it . Anyway , this was pretty brutal . I think Natalya just had an off night .

- Getting all the negatives out of the way, The Harts/Cryme Tyme feud has just been them trading wins every show for 3 weeks and now its just boring. I know this week it was just the girls, but still. Why are they even feuding ?

~ Speaking of that, why are they spending more time with a Natalya/Eve feud and giving almost nothing to the Melina/Michelle title feud?

~ - Rey's stuff with Ziggler was great. Ziggler is quickly becoming a favorite of mine and I am hoping he wins the IC Title this sunday, which would free up Rey to be Punk's next challenger.

~ - Build up for Punk/Hardy has been nothing short of amazing and that continued this week. Very strong for the go home show. Punk's promo was just awesome once again, and his sneak attack on Hardy at the tail end was great. Good stuff all around.

~ "JR stole my BBQ" . Best Sign in along time .

~ Finlay needs to get rid of the queer music .

~ The show became a complete success when CM Punk challenged the WWE Universe. He is the voice of reason, preaching nothing but the truth to the fans. He shined in his promo on the mic, best this week. Him and Jericho are currently the best mic workers on Smackdown. The best part was Jeff Hardy coming out, only to get blown off and left standing clueless alone in the ring.

~ Line of the night :
" I don't think I even want to be in the same ring as you "
-CM Punk on Hardy .

~ I call CM Punk to be Y2J's partner , though I still hope for Christian .

~ Overall , another strong week for SmackDown and I'm really looking forward to Night of Champions as it should be an enthralling show , at least on the side of the blue brand .

100 % agree that the divas match was a dud .

Worst Match SD Has had all year .

Anyone who considers the woman's match to be 2 stars must be smoking the same thing as Jeff Hardy .

Because nobody in their right mind would give it more than a star , even if they are being generous .

I considered it a complete failure .

The point of selling an in-match injury is to have it effect the offence of the person who's injured and thus comes in to play during the the finish. See Flair/Steamboat 3 form 1989 for the best example of that.

If Truth had shown signs of the injury while in the motions of DOING his moves and not in between, it would have helped make a more dramatic finish. Throw in an attempt at stuff that doesn't come off because of the injury and then managing to hit the finish despite what happened would have lifted it up another star. It did not escape me that he used the other leg for the finish because if he didn't I would have ripped into him harder.

The point of working an injured body part and having it almost ignored during the final stages of the match was something that happened throughout the night as Punk worked the leg then switched to the arm which had no effect on Rey despite it being a large chunk of the heat section of the match.

It's the difference between emotional investment in a match and just enjoying it. I enjoyed the main event and would recommend it to anyone who asked, but it's hardly a great match and the lack of follow through on offence is one big point why.

#####

The divas match wasnt a dud it was pretty good, the reviewer is just bias against Eve because she went over the talented Natalya.

Posted By: Person (Guest) on July 24, 2009 at 11:24 PM

hardly, The match was a dud because half o the people involved sucked and the talent of the other held it together. Check out the finish where Eve barely made contact and it was plain to see it wasn't hit correct, couple that with the fact Natalya laid prone for a good while while Eve set herself made the finish almost anti-climatic. I don't care who won the match but with the crap execution finish, blown spot and general sloppiness of half the participants, it was a DUD.

But that's my opinion, if you guys got something out of it, bully bully for you.

Ziggler in my mind, is becoming a big reason to watch Smackdown.

Not to jump on my soapbox, but as someone who spends time with addicts and recovery and is a recovering alcoholic himself, I'm disappointed in the CM Punk character. Telling someone with a year's sobriety that their clean year means nothing is the worst thing the addict can hear. Hopefully they reinforce that he is a heel, so fans won't sympathize with him. You've never been prone to addiction and are now clean? Big deal. Of course you don't deserve a medal. I'm more impressed with the bravery of people who have faced their demons head on, asked help from God, and cleaned their act up.

Fuck the Divas .
They almost ruined SD with that fucking abomination of a match .

The burial of Knox is a damn shame - he's an agile big-man with a good look...(and his theme music is awesome.)
Morrison has to be involved on Sunday, they can't just throw him into a Summerslam main-event when he's missed the previous two PPVs...

JR said Charlie Haas doesn't have a sense of humor.

Isn't this the same guy we saw last year coming to the ring as Stone Cold Steve Haastin and Haas Hogan??

The sight of Eve pinning Natayla is one of the most horrible of the year.

Nice promo by Punk. Chris Jericho is simply the best of the best. Mysterio is on fire. No Morrison? YES!

Is it too late to bring back Michael O? Smackdown is kicking ass. We need the dope! Whose with me people?

Once again Smackdown is the best wrestling show on TV. Really enjoyed Punk's promo and the first and last matches. There is no excuse for Eve going over Natalya and it's really sad that some people will defend it. It's sadder that some people also thought it wasn't a complete DUD, which it was. Would have liked to actually hear from Morrison instead of the highlights package, but I guess it's still something to keep him in mind for the people that don't watch Superstars.

It was a very good show. But I feel that Masters won't be jericho's partner. The way he was talking to Kane without any audio leads me to believe that it will be Undertaker. He does owe Legacy soemthing after they interfered in his match with Orton a few months back.

I've never noticed how good Mike Knox is at selling...i guess it never came up when he was getting pushed.

Anyone notice it was the right leg that R-Truth tweaked early in the match but the left one that Haas worked on afterward?

And,not working an injury 100% in a match is nothing new. Folk like HBK "forget" their injuries all the time.

Posted By: NoirFan (Guest)  on July 25, 2009 at 10:43 AM

This show badly needs to cut back on the Hardy/Jericho matches. This is about the fifth TV match between the two in about two months.

I actually think Eve is improving. The jumping calf kick was nice, as was the moonsault (which will be better when she gets enough courage to not land on her feet first).

You see Rutherford, you have to learn to lower your standards......

Eve is coming along nicely in the ring. She actually seems to make an effort, unlike Maryse who's just too much into showboating in a generic heel Diva way, but isn't very good in the ring.

Eve will probably be drafted to RAW next year.

I wouldn't call the divas' match a dud. Probably 1 star.

Good show, par for the course for Smackdown. I do have one issue: they have Morrison, who was already awesome and is finally getting over with the marks as well as the IWC. And so they take him and run two weeks of lame segments with Teddy Long...give him a match (a great one, too), and then he's absent from the show tonight with a video package. While he did wrestle on Superstars, he's a Smackdown lower main eventer and should be treated as such, not used like he's Santino.

Jericho sets up a deal with Kane about tagging with Kane's brother, undertaker. Which sets up Taker vs Jericho further down the line.

CM Punk takes out Jeff Hardy for good, giving Hardy time off and CM Punk the biggest heatwave on the planet.

Did your addictions make you deaf?

Didn't you hear the disapproval of the crowd every time he opened his mouth? Or the fact he said he was better than EVERYBODY else because he never did drugs.

Not sure what enforcement is actually needed.....

That post by Scott Rutherford about selling and R-Truth has to be one of the gayest, nerdiest, most pathetic things ever. It was a 5 minute meaningless TV match on SmackDown, not a PPV main event, you anally retentive douchebag!

'OOOH ASK HELP FROM GOD FOR YOUR ADDICTIONS!'

No, ask help from REAL people. People who LOVE you. People who EXIST.

I love this. If you fall into alcoholism, you are an indulgent sinner,` and you only have yourself to blame. If you manage to recreate yourself, it was due to the help of God.

You might as well pray to Garfield.

Yes that's it. Praise the people that are weak-minded and give into temptation yet show no appreaciation to those that are so strong they never fall into bad habits.

Hey son/daughter, eventhough I want the best for you I think it's better if you spend a few years abusing drugs and alcohol rather than live a clean life free from any of that. That'll build your character!

Asshole.

Chris Jericho is teasing who his mystery partner for tomorrow night’s WWE Night of Champions pay-per-view on Twitter with the following message:

“I’m not gonna say who my partner is going to be tomorrow….but he is EVIL….”

Maybe he was talking to kane about getting into contact with taker, think about you could either have a taker heel turn which would be fresh (leaving it open of Dibase to try and end the streak) or you could have him turn on jericho and bang instant feud, sounds stupid but i'm calling it anyway

I totally see where your coming from on the selling the injury. In retrospect one wonders why they bothered with it in what was obviously a match for R-Truth to see some action and get a win against Haas King of Emotional Detachment. So to set up an angle where R-Truth gets hurt so he in theory can't do his usual pizazz seem kinda pointless. Unless they make a story out of it with R-Truth continuously hurting himself doing cartwheels.

"The push for a broken down giant who can barely walk and the oft-pushed Kane who never goes above lower main event status while Knox, a big monster with a great look and decent skills gets murdered for storyline advancement."

LOLwhat?
Are you kidding? Knox has barely any skills and just kinda does clubs and blows and stuff. He also has no charisma or character, which (like them or not) both Khali and Kane have. In fact I would say Kane is still better then Knox in the ring tbh. Your statement is stupid.

I love everything Punk does nowadays...great that they have finally let him loose...I'm kinda shocked they let him say some of the things he does. Great that he calls out the Hardy fans for what they really are doing...that is supporting a screw up drug addict who is risking a career alot of people would kill to have just to get high,so what is that saying about his fans? I'm a former addict myself and I agree with everything Punks saying...he's just saying it like it is...

Can anyone explain to me why Dolph Freakin' Ziggler is getting a better push than John Morrison ? Anyone ?

So predictable. Kane becomes Jericho's tag partner. They start beating the hell out of Legacy. Then The Great Khali comes out and distracts Kane. Legacy wins. Legacy titles. Orton loses his title. Orton bitter that Legacy has titles and he doesn't. Legacy and Orton split up. Legacy turns face.

There is no way in hell WWE are going to have Taker return in that match, they would publicize his return when he does to increase buys.

Mike Knox seems to be a beard with a head and body growing out of it.
And now that I think about it,maybe the audio during the Jericho/Kane backstage segment was off for a reason....the commentary team kept talking quickly too...hmm...

Morrison is challenging the winner of Punk/Hardy. How is that a worse push?
