411's WWE Smackdown Report 07.31.09
Posted by Chris Lansdell on 07.31.2009

It's that Lansdell guy again! Turns out we need a SmackDown reviewer too. Do you enjoy watching the best wrestling show on TV? Want to write about it for 411mania? Send a sample to Csonka and join the team!

We start with a recap of Night of Champions and Jeff Hardy's title win, which leads to him coming out with his newly-won championship. As he's coming to the ring we discover that he's fighting John Morrison for the title tonight. That should be something else.

Hardy has a mic. If this is a dream, don't wake him. He wants to thank the outcasts, The Reject Shannon Moore, all the freaks...it's like he was at a CZW show. He says that if everyone was like CM Punk the world would be boring, and the only thing he's high on is being world champion. Because he's a human, and he has the God-given right to live life the way he chooses. He knows Punk has got his rematch and he can have it whenever he wants. He goes on to put over John Morrison and says tongiht should be amazing. Cryme Tyme's music hits and they come out and celebrate with Hardy as we go to commercial.

We get the Raw Rebound with Cryme Tyme and Shaq before going back to the ring. Oh a match!

Number 1 Contender Tag Match - The Hart Dynasty vs Cryme Tyme

Every time I hear that guitar screech I get goose bumps. You'd think I'd be used to it now, but hearing it for real in Toronto was awesome.

Shad and Smith lockup to start. Shad backs Smith up but Smith comes back with forearms and a headlock. Shad fights out, they criss cross and Shad takes him down with a shoulder. Whip and a BIG flying back elbow by Shad in the corner. Smith makes a blind tag and bails and Kidd hits a basement dropkick to the knee of Shad. Leg grapevine applied by Kidd, he breaks the hold and goes to work on the left leg of Shad. Smith whips him knees-first into the steps as we go to break.

Back from break and Smith is dragging Shad away from JTG. He stomps on Shad's leg and hits some leg kicks after Shad gets up, then applies a standing kneebar. He turns it over into a half crab, then steps on Shad's head just to make it suck more. Shad kicks him off and Smith makes the tag and Kidd makes it in in time to prevent the tag...or does he? NO! JTG is in! Dropkick to Kidd! A second! Back drop! Dropkick to Smith on the apron! Top rope senton! 1...2...no. He whips Kidd, Kidd holds the ropes and gets a foot up then hits a springboard blockbuster (!!!) for 2. JTG gets a cradle out of nowhere for 2, then a rollup for 2. Kidd takes him back down, has a whip blocked and JTG hits a necktie backbreaker for 2. Shad dives off the apron to take out DH Smith! Kidd tries a schoolboy, JTG rolls through and gets 2. They counter each others stuff and JTG hits the Shout Out for the win. Strong match.

Winners: Cryme Tyme via pinfall (JTG on Kidd, Shout Out)

Show and Jericho's newly-remixed joint music hits, and it is awesome. Even more awesome is that Show is out in 2 pieces of a 3 piece suit. Fear not parents, it's the jacket he's missing. Jericho tells Cryme Tyme to enjoy their moment, but things are going downhill from there. They're this close to living out their childhood dreams of being WWE tag team champions, but they're just like everyone else there: failures. They have 40 titles between them, do they know how great that makes them. Jericho keeps talking about how great they are, until Shad interrupts and calls them Han Solo and Chewbacca, but it's OK because he speaks Wookiee. No, really. Then he gargles for a minute or two. Jericho says it's not a joke. JTG brings up the stuff Shaq said while the crowd chants "Christina". Cryme Tyme is leaving Summer Slam with the titles. Show says Cryme Tyme are running their mouths because he and Jericho permit it. They're used to being champions. He lists their accomplishments and really, it's most impressive. That was pretty good and made Cryme Tyme look like a threat.

Michelle McCool and and Layla vs Eve Torres and Melina

Layla and Melina to start. Melina just hurts Layla and goes after Michelle, Layla comes back with some forerams but gets hip tossed. Tag to Eve who gets a slam for 2. Dropkick by Eve, a whip is reversed and Layla charges into a nasty reverse elbow. Nasty as in poor. Eve tries to go up top but Layla kicks her down and tags Michelle. She goes to work with knee strikes on a downed Eve. A legdrop gets 2 before McCool locks in a sleeper. Eve gets to her feet and hits a jawbreaker to break the hold. Lukewarm tag! Clitheslines to Layla by Melina! A whip is reversed but Melina avoids the charge and gets a flapjack. She hits a running kick on Layla and finsihes with the splits for fun. Melina sets up for a reverse DDT but gets her jaw kicked sideways by McCool. Eve dropkicks McCool to the floor but chases her and eats a boot. Layla tags McCool who sets for...a Widow's Peak? Wait...REVERSED!!! FLIP POWERBOMB! THREE! Great finish.

Winners: Melina and Eve Torres via pinfall (Melina on McCool, flip powerbomb)

Josh Matthews is with CM Punk. Punk says the win was an upset. He can't see how Hardy was the better man living the type of lifestyle that he lives. He wishes everyone was straight edge. Hardy has said many times that he lives in the moment, but he should enjoy this moment because it won't last. He got next.

Hey, remember when Maria was the next big thing in the women's division and always on air? Now she's getting her hand kissed by Dolph Ziggler and disappearing inside 20 seconds. He's up...NEXT.

Finlay and Rey Misterio vs Mike Knox and Dolph Ziggler

They do the entrances, and we go to break. Ziggler and Rey to start. Ziggler with a shoulder and a boot early, but Rey comes back with a headscissors and a boot of his own until Knox tags in and just flies into Rey for a 2 count. Whip by Knox and Rey hits the ground. The beard is STILL epic. Know with another whip but he charges into two knees by Rey, who tries a rana off the second. Knox catches him and looks for a powerbomb but Rey fights out and gets an enziguiri and the tag! Clotheslines for Knox! Ass drop! 2 count. Shoulder in the corner and the Finlay Roll get 2. He knocks Ziggler off the apron and gets a boot into Knox's face then tries to go up top, from whence Knox kicks him hard. Know applies a leglock but Finlay fights out, Knox regains control and slingshots Finlay into the underside of the second rope. Tag to Ziggler who hits a dropkick for 2. He prevents the tag and applies a sleeper, then changes it up and snaps the leg of Finlay for a 2 count. Again Ziggler blocks the tag, drags Finlay across the ring and tags Knox. Know hits a legdrop for 2. Spinning toehold by Knox but Finlay uses the free knee to break the hold and again tries to tag, Knox cuts him off. He applies a stretch but breaks it to fluff a shot at Rey on the apron. He clearly missed but Rey went down anyway. Tag to Ziggler who hits a big corner splash and gets 2. Elbow drop gets 2 more but Ziggler misses the second one. AGAIN Finlay tries to tag and is blocked, Ziggler drags Finlay again and tags Knox again. More leg work by Knox. Ziggler back in and gets a 2 count. Another tag to Knox, he gets a slam but misses a knee drop. Finlay still can't get the tag as Ziggler stops him, whips him and...misses a corner splash! Tag to Rey!! Springboard senton for Ziggler! Rey ducks a clothesline and they blow a spot but recover quickly as Ziggler tries a sunset flip and gets kicked in the head for 2. Springboard crossbody by Rey for 2 more. Ziggler reverses a whip and runs into a boot, then gets drop toeheld into 619 position...connects! Splash! 1...2...NO!!! Knox breaks it up andggler attacks Finlay form behind and tries the Stroke but Rey sunset flips him for the win! I didn't really buy into that, the heels were too slow and plain on offence. Needed more zing.

Winners: Rey Misterio and Finlay by pinfall (Rey on Ziggler, sunset flip)

Josh Matthews has Morrison. He has his first title shot tonight, is he prepared? Morrison congratulates Jeff, but before he gets to have a picnic with his freaks on top of a mountain, he has to face Morrison. Morrison sounded like he was yelling throughout and was really not convincing.

Great Khali vs Charlie Haas

Hey look, Haas still has a job! He's about to be killed, but he still has a job!

Haas tries to punch it out with Khali. Fail. Clubbing forearms don't work much better as Haas runs into a goozle. Shots in the corner by Khali including a HUGE open-hand slap. JUDO CHOP! He sets for the Punjabi Plunge but SHOCK! It's Kane! Khali turns around and Kane backs off and kidnaps Sideburns Singh! Khali chases him and rescues his princess (guess she wasn't in another castle), but there is no bell. So is that a DQ or is Haas getting the win via countout?

Winner: Ummm...Khali? via ummm...DQ? (Kane-ference? Maybe?)

More Raw Rebound. More Shaq, this time focusing on the media reaction.

Wow, main event? So with ads factored in, I reckon this gets 20 minutes. Awesome.

World Heavyweight Title - Jeff Hardy (C) vs John Morrison

They do the super special ring announcing. Hardy has pink sleeves. Hot pink.

Morrison gets control early with an armbar, Hardy reverses to a hammerlock and a headlock before taking morrison down with a shoulder. Chinlock by Hardy, Morrison flips him off and tries a kick. Jeff ctaches the foot but can't stop the foot coming over the top. 2 count only. Whip by Morrison hard, Hardy goes down and that gets 2. Modified Buffalo sleeper now by Morrison. Hardy gets to his feet and gets a schoolboy for a quick 1 before eating a clothesline and getting a 2 count. Rear chinlock now by Morrison. Again Hardy gets up, ducks a clothesline and hits a pair of forearms and an inverted atomic. Double leg takedown, Hardy goes to drop feet to the groin but Morrison blocks it, then catapults Hardy up and over the top to the floor. He teases a flip to the outside but lands on the apron, kicks Hardy in the face and hits an Asai moonsault as we go to break. Great start.

Back from break and Hardy is in a chinlock on the mat. Who let Orton in here? Hardy gets up again and slugs his way free, kicks Morrison and has a twist of fate try blocked and turned into a quick cover for 2. He snaps Hardy's neck over the top and goes for Starship Pain!!! Hardy moves but Morrison lands on his feet...Whisper in the Wind!!! 1...2...no! Hardy in control now with a snap mare and a chinlock. Morrison tires to knee his way clear but Hardy gets a slam and a Matt-esque yodeling legdrop from the second rope for 2. Back to the chinlock now. Morrison throws off Hardy and then hits an STO backbreaker/Russian legsweep combo followed by a standing shooting star press! 1...2...2.806! Punches in the corner by Morrison and a neckbreaker get 2 more. Whip by Morrison, he charges but gets lifted to the apron. He hits a forearm and climbs, Hardy climbs with him, they slug it out on the second rope and both men fall to the floor! Good time for a break...THERE it is.

Back from break and they are STILL slugging it out mid-ring. Morrison gets control and hits a clothesline and a sweet dropkick, but Hardy comes back with a clothesline of his own and hits the double leg to the groin followed by a low dropkick for 2. Morrison has rolled under the rope and is on the apron, Jeff gets a shoulder to the gut and tries a sunset bomb to the outside but Morrison sits down and then whips Hardy to the barri...reversed! Morrison hits the rail! Hardy positions the steps and does a running leap off them into Morrison! both men back in and hardy gets a 2. Twist of Fate try, Morrison pushes him off but Hardy runs up the ropes, Whisper in the Wind! MISSED! SHINING WIZARD! 1...2...2.8771! hardy is whipped in but he ducks the Chuck Kick! HUGE dropkick by Morrison gets 2 anyway. Hardy reverses a whip and charges but gets crotched...CHUCK KICK by Morrison on a crotched Hardy! 1...2...2.903! Morrison stays in control, Moonlight Drive! COUNTERED! Gordbuster! Hardy goes up top...SWANTON! I smell Punk. Hardy with the cover! 1...2...NO!!!!! He kicked out of the Swanton! Hardy tries the mule kick in the corner but Morrison blocks it and push-kicks him across the ring! STARSHIP PAIN!!! KNEES ONLY! Twist of Fate by Hardy! Swanton! 3! Incredible. Best match I've seen this year.

Winner: Jeff Hardy via pinfall (Swanton)

Here comes Punk! He's dressed to compete...he claps for Morrison's effort as the latter leaves the ring area and stares down Hardy before raising his arm...Hardy looks unconvinced, as am I. Punk calls for a mic. HERE it comes. He starts to talk and WHAM! Mic shot to the head! Beatery ensues as Punk takes Hardy to the barricade and stomps him like an Irish dance. He rams Hardy's back into the barricade and...YES! Danielson-style elbow strikes! Hardy is bleeding! Well, the subtlety seems to have been dismissed. Punk leaves, stops, thinks better of it and runs back, laying some kicks to the spine and throwing Hardy across the announce table. We get shots of some shocked kids in the crowd. Punk has the mic at the top of the ramp.

"I want everybody all over the world to tune in to Smackdown next week, because that's when I'm going to take MY World Heavyweight Title back." Nothing like a hard sell.

On a show full of awesome wrestlers why is Jeff Hardy champion?

Awesome episode tonight. This may have been the best televised event all year (PPV) included.

That may have been Cryme Tyme's best match ever and wait a minute the tag division is suddenly worth watching thanks to Jericho. (BTW loved the mash-up of Show and Y2J's music)

The Rey/Finlay/Knox/Ziggler match was real good even though I hate Ziggler eating the pin in a match involving Mike Knox.

And what can I say about the main (and the Punk altercation that followed)? Probably just below Taker/Shawn at WM25 for match of the year and including the post match stuff ranks as the best segment of TV all year.

Awesome!

i dont understand why the jeff vs morrison is the best match you have seen this year morrison carried jeff during the match jeff didnt sell and he botched a couple of moves the match was good but not great nothing i would die to see i gave the match 3.5 stars there are alot more of better matches like taker vs shawn

Finally, The CM Punk we all know and love is back!

I very rarely comment on here but given how awesome tonight's show was I had too.Let's see we had a MOTYC and the elevation of Morrison to ME status. FUCKING AWESOME after match segment that solidifies punk as a true badass heel. Great in ring action on the undercard. Cryme Tyme getting elevated in what is now a serious tag division. I just can't believe the same company books RAW

Great show , A+ .

Every week i watch WWE and say - THANK GOD FOR SD .

I'm very content with how Punks heel turn completed.

+ There are so many good things about this show, but I'll start with the undercard, it was great, entertaining stuff, and Cryme Tyme looked half-decent for the first time their careers. Jericho and Big Shows promo was awesome .

+ Punk vs. Morrison. TV Match of the Year candidate . Was so well scripted, I actually thought Morrison was gonna win at times. Not really too difficult to turn mid-carders in to main eventers is it, Raw?

+ That ass-whooping at the end was pure awesome. Punk is the most exciting thing in WWE right now. "Jeff, honestly, the past few weeks...BANG!". Sheer brilliance.

+Just the quality of the show overall. The great booking, the way Punk made such an impact without even having a match, and the fact that the tag titles mean something for the first time in over two years.

+ Punk vs. Hardy for the title next week?- Yes Mr. Punk, I will be tuning in.

+ Chewbacca impersonation = win too, imo.

+ Michelle and Melina looked very good in the ring . The 2 best divas in WWE right now IMO .

+Tag Match was OK , Rey - Dolph should continue .

+The crowd in Baltimore was fantastic .

+ But more than anything , this show will FOREVER be remembered as the day that CM Punk left it all behind , no more Mr nice guy .

The looks on the faces of the Jeff fans were priceless!

The good guy we all knew no longer exists . Consumed by the dark side , he is .

CM Punk's transformation is complete .
A Great heel , he will make .

~_~

Jeff Hardy vs Morrison was awesome. Along with Cm PUnk heel tactics. DAMN! Smackdown was great.. the main event was what save it..

Posted By: Guest (Guest)  on July 31, 2009 at 10:46 PM

That main event was amazing, what a beatdown too, big ups to Morrison, Hardy and Punk

Posted By: Bill (Guest)  on July 31, 2009 at 10:47 PM

That Morrison vs Hardy match was great. Definatly in the top 10 TV Matches of the year. Hopefully we get Hardy vs Punk vs Morrison at SS

Posted By: Brian (Guest)  on July 31, 2009 at 10:57 PM

I laughed SO hard at Punk's attack on Hardy. It seriously made my day.

"You know, Jeff, for the last couple of days..."
WHAM!

"On a show full of awesome wrestlers why is Jeff Hardy champion?"

Because he's the most over.

Pretty neat main event.

Hardy/Morrison was awesome. Easily the best match I've seen in awhile.*****!

Posted By: Steve (Guest)  on July 31, 2009 at 11:30 PM

Really, Lansdell? REALLY? Morrison vs. Hardy is the best match you've seen all year? REALLY????????????? I guess somebody didn't watch Wrestlemania 25, because the best match all year so far is Michaels-Taker, hands-down. Although this is not to knock the awesome and amazing effort both Morrison and Hardy put into the Smackdown main event. Watching the match made me proud to be a wrestling fan, and both men deserve a standing O for it.

Posted By: Mike (Guest)  on July 31, 2009 at 11:32 PM

Haha Jeff Hardy in the best match anyone has seen this year, funny.

Posted By: Doug (Guest)  on July 31, 2009 at 11:40 PM

Rey Mysterio still sucked. Worse champ in the WWE.

Posted By: John (Guest)  on July 31, 2009 at 11:42 PM

The show was top to bottom awesome. That is truly saying something when Khali walks into the ring. I knew Punk was going heel but I thought Punk would start smack talking and Hardy would beat down Punk. But Punk flipped the switched and it blew my mind.

Posted By: enlightenedone9 (Guest)  on July 31, 2009 at 11:43 PM

That was the best Jeff Hardy match I can remember seeing on free TV. At this point John Morrison could get a good match out of Mark Henry and a fantastic match out of any decent wrestler in the WWE today. Between this and that great match with Evan Boune a couple of months ago, the great match with Edge about six weeks ago, John Morrison is on the edge of being the next HBK.

Posted By: Cthulhugus (Guest)  on July 31, 2009 at 11:44 PM

Shad sold the leg! Shad sold the leg!

Triple H, you could learn from this young man.

Posted By: the dude (Guest)  on July 31, 2009 at 11:44 PM

Jeff - Morrison - **** , IMO .

Matches that are better :

Edge / Cena LMS ,
NWO - Both Elimination chambers ,
HBK / Taker ,
Edge / Jeff Ladder match ,
Jericho / Rey ,
Edge / Morrison ,
Edge / Rey ,
Punk /Hardy .

Not even in the top 10 , I feel , but definitely a very good match .

The main event and the tag match kicked all kinds of all tonight

Posted By: Dwayne (Guest)  on August 01, 2009 at 12:15 AM

When I saw they were giving hardy and morrison the last 30 minutes I was worried they would burn themselves out given they are both high impact guys...but damned if they didn't pace themselves perfectly told a great story and put on one of the top 5 matches of the year

Posted By: Guest#0674 (Guest)  on August 01, 2009 at 12:16 AM

Based on Chris Lansdell's preference for workrate, I can see how it would be better than Taker-Shawn in his opinion. It was very fast and an absolute star making performance by Morrison, with a few storytelling things that I appreciated (busting out the SSSP, hitting the heelish mounted forearms out of frustration) that really elevated it.

****1/2 for that match, and ***** for the Punk beatdown. I haven't marked that hard in a LOOOOOOONG time.

Posted By: Chief Runs With Beer (Registered)  on August 01, 2009 at 12:16 AM

Good main event, but Danielson/Black was better, not even close.

Posted By: chris (Guest)  on August 01, 2009 at 12:18 AM

Watch Hardy/Morrison again. It's great but not that great. ****

Posted By: Dylan (Guest)  on August 01, 2009 at 12:25 AM

I marked out like a little bitch when punk hit hardy with the mic outta nowhere, the hart dynasty is now my favorite tag team in wrestling and john Morrison is the fastest rising star in the biz today. So summerslam in my opinion is going to be a gimmick match to blowoff the punk/hardy feud, but in all honesty I think I'd rather see punk/Morrison/hardy. That would be AMAZING

Posted By: Punkaholic (Guest)  on August 01, 2009 at 12:31 AM

I think this show illustrated pretty well where Morrison is at right now. Inside the ring, he's as good as most anyone on the roster. Outside of it, with his promos and whatnot, he still needs work before he's ready to be world champion. But if he can figure out how to transition his character to a babyface without sounding bland and awkward like he did in his promo tonight, I could definitely see him getting the nod in the Royal Rumble match and winning his first world title at WM26. He's going to get there eventually, but not yet, my friend. Not yet.

Posted By: Guest#1123 (Guest)  on August 01, 2009 at 12:31 AM

"+ Michelle and Melina looked very good in the ring. The 2 best divas in WWE right now IMO"

McCool is fucking AWFUL.

Phoenix is by far the best female wrestler in WWE.

Posted By: Guest#9258 (Guest)  on August 01, 2009 at 12:42 AM

This is why SD should be the "A" Show! Awesome!
And Lansdell, Shawn Michaels and the Undertaker would like a word with you.

Posted By: Guest#7660 (Guest)  on August 01, 2009 at 12:43 AM

Will they please let John Morrison be himself? Will whomever is booking his turn please watch the early dirt sheet episodes? He doesn't have to be so syrupy to be a face. His promo really pissed me off. He comes off so fuckin golly gee willickers! Let him be the cocky and smug bastard he is...then and only then will he get the POP that his talent warrants.

Posted By: SKO (Guest)  on August 01, 2009 at 12:54 AM

Yes, another Smackdown with a hotter crowd than nearly all the PPVs this year, and a main-event that was better than nearly all the PPV main-events this year. Morrison is white-hot at the moment - he really does seem to pull-out a new move in every match...

punk useing the danielson elbow strikes was great i was like YESSSSS but now whiny bitches will complain hes stealing thge dragons moves

Hardy vs Morrison was gold! Not sure if best tv match all year, but it was very very good. Why everyone is hating on Hardy I'll never know....you all were clamoring for him to get the title last year during his big push when he beat HHH and should have beaten Orton. He can be sloppy at times, but he is awesome. That being said..Jeff the last few weeks..WHAM. BWAHAHAHAHAHA. C.M. Punk is great. I can watch Punk vs Hardy for a long long time.

Wow Cryme Time vs Harts was good as well..and now a long build up for the tag titles...Jericho makes everything relavent.

Mike Knox might not be flashy, but the big dude can wrestle. Much better than most of the big men..Kane, Khali, Big Show.

The ladies were good tonight as well. Wish Katie Lee was over here!!!

That was the best free tv match this year. I would say that Jericho/Rey's PPV encounters were better...wasnt a fan of UT/HBK. Kicking out of finishers 15 times does not make MOTY.

What about Morrison, though? In the last 24+ hours, he gave us two of the best TV matches of the year. Of course, WWE brass will keep teasing and JR will spend months blogging about how he is not quite ready for the main event, or almost there. Thus, his push will be squandered and another ME talent will be blocked.

I hope not, and am crossing my fingers but we have seen it before: See: Shelton Benjamin

You should probably shut the fuck up and let the man have his own opinion.

Welcome to the main event scene on Smackdown John Morrison.

Posted By: Dwayne (Guest)  on August 01, 2009 at 03:05 AM

This was such a great episode. Everything up to the main event was a kickass pro wrestling show. I knew all the characters, and what their motivations were, and they all were terrific.

but then things got fucking epic.

the match itself was a 4 star affair. we all knew jeff would win, and that knocks it down to a maximum of 4 stars on our collective scale. and those mother fuckers reached that 4 stars. to see jeff teach morrison that level of storytelling from bell to bell was fucking beautiful.

but then, after the match...

i really like cm punk as a wrestler. i'm from chicago. i went to the same "beginner's wrestling school" as he did; i lasted a day there. so i've always followed him closely.

and based on the morality play that went into effect tonight, i want to see jeff hardy kick the fuck out of him.

this was the hardest, personally, that i've marked in many years.

***** Smackdown!

You have to laugh at those leaving negative comments/disagreeing with the guy's opinion/slating wrestlers they'd most probably liked before but now not so much because they're more over; typical IWC douchebag nerds, thinking their views actually mean something.

Great, great show tonight! I didn't get to pay much attention to the Mysterio/Finlay tag match, so I hope I can catch that soon given the comments.

Is a Devil's Advocate going to get flamed? Let's give it the ol' college try anyway....

Punk's heel turn would have been more memorable if it wasn't so telegraphed. I LOVE that he smacked Jeff mid-sentenced. Never seen that before, and it was awesome. But I think we could tell when there were five minutes left in the show that Punk had to act. I would have rather seen something like Jeff & Punk beating Jericho & Show in the main, then Punk taking out Jeff during the celebration. That would have been much more surprising.

Also, we say Morrison has been elevated, and in the eyes of most die-hard, SD!-loving internet fans, it's true.

But will the ratings reflect that?

Unfortunately, I just sense that the E is not going to be impressed by the rating pulled in by this main event. It was a great match, and Morrison showed his stuff in the ring (not so much on the mic), but to go out of my way to paraphrase an old saying...if a wrestler puts on a four-star match and no one watches it, does it make a main eventer? I hope I'm wrong, but I have a feeling ratings aren't going to warrant a Morrison push.

(I maintain that he needs a manager ten times more than Benjamin does, too. Man, if only there was a charismatic female character with whom Morrison has a history, and who no longer has a cumbersome title belt around her waist, who could do his talking for him. If only....)

That was a great show. I even enjoyed the opening tag team match and I usually can't stand Cryme Tyme.

The only bad part was the new Jericho/Show theme remix. Lansdell got it wrong, that is one God awful piece of music!

Morrison - Hardy was good, like 3.5 *, not more. Frankly the two Punk - Morrison matches were better than this.

Morrison should stop reciting his promos and actually start delivering the lines. His promos looked very artificial and contrived. Another thing that scares me is Morrison putting on that fake cheery smile. Just because he is a babyface doesn't mean he has to smile like a baboon that has spotted a banana.

E! - Don't make Morrison the next Cena.

Great SD.... You know I was sceptical about Jericho/Show working but thus far it has been great. Lising their accomplishments really made them seem like a big deal. Also from having a non existant tag division to the most exciting tag division in the world in the space of a few weeks just shows you how amazing Jericho is.

I think people are overrating the main event. Perhaps because it was inevitable that JoMo was losing I didn't enjoy it show much, when the result can only go one possible way it really takes away from the match for me. Though it is still easily **** but I wouldn't go any higher.

Punks turn was truely beautiful, seriously beating Jeff had me popping like crazy and when he stopped.. walked off then decided to come back and continue I was feeling blood thirsty through the TV screen.

Excellent stuff. Honestly the Raw writers need to be fired instantly.. just let Hayes and co book the whole wwe.

If Morrison vs Punk vs Jeff isn't the title match at Summerslam it will take away from what was the best 2 hour wrestling show in the past 10 years.

Posted By: Parxy (Guest)  on August 01, 2009 at 05:51 AM

The trigger has finally been pulled. CM Punk's heelish awesomeness can only grow from here, and the nod to ROH with Dragon's elbows was pretty cool, not sure if he meant it that way though.

Punk/Hardy/Morrison for WHC at Summerslam anyone?

Everyone on Smackdown brought their A game...fantastic show. Too often the IWC is quick to dump on a bad show, so let's be sure to shine a light on what Smackdown is doing as of late. Keep it up!!

I guess, based on reactions to my proclamation, there is a need for a column on how and why I rate matches. But I will say that people blowing their load over Danielson-Black are overrating it, because Danielson is in it.

Just more smackdown awesomeness.

On the Hardy/Morrison match; for me personally,it was not quite a motyc, but only in the same way a great single is not a great album or a great article is not a great novel.

It was brilliant at what it did. Amazing free tv, established Morrison as a guy you could believe win the world title, established Hardy as a fighting champion, showed the best of both guys style and exhilarated both the crowd and the viewer.Made you want to see more of their battles for the title and how it would develop.
I'd have happily had it as a main event at a ppv and paid for it.
To then have that segue into the FULL Punk heel turn was just brilliant.
The losing of the belt( looks a better decision now for Punk's motivation to turn doesn't it?)previous Punk promo's ,match that had gone before, the history of the ladder match cash in, the sympathy for Hardy, the pure heat on Punk was just brilliantly executed.
Nothing in it was ground-breakingly new(as most things aren't), in terms of the turn, or in terms of elements of Punk's character work elsewhere in the past, but it was brilliant to see it played out and judged so well in front of millions of people on tv and the audience reaction.

"i dont understand why the jeff vs morrison is the best match you have seen this year morrison carried jeff during the match jeff didnt sell and he botched a couple of moves the match was good but not great nothing i would die to see i gave the match 3.5 stars there are alot more of better matches like taker vs shawn

Posted By: Ryden (Guest) on July 31, 2009 at 10:35 PM

And what can I say about the main (and the Punk altercation that followed)? Probably just below Taker/Shawn at WM25 for match of the year and including the post match stuff ranks as the best segment of TV all year.

Awesome!

Am I the only person that thinks that the Undertaker vs. HBK at Wrestlemania was just as bad as everything else on the card. You don't have to pretend these guys did a good job when they didn't. I swear you people are acting like one of them will read what you say about the match and you are trying not to hurt their feelings. The match was horrible and that is that. At least it tied with HHH vs Orton for match of the night.

When you consider Shaq kicking ass on RAW, Christian/Ryder from ECW, Morrison/Kidd from Superstars, and Hardy/Morrison from SD, WWE has had a really good week.

Posted By: The Great Capt. Smooth (Guest)  on August 01, 2009 at 12:57 PM

I may be getting ahead of myself, but how awesome would it be if Punk started using the Danielson "Elbow the Motherfucker to Death" as one of his finishers? I was hoping Danielson would eventually make it to WWE and start the trend of striking to stopage finishers but I think it would be really cool for the heel Punk as well.
I'm so happy they went the distance and busted out some blood during that beatdown. Smackdown must be the WWE's way of apologizing to the real fans for what it has to do to make RAW palatable to the masses every week.

Wow, that segment was awesome, Punk is the man right now, hope he gets his title back soon.

Also Morrison is going to be a World champion within the next year but i think this year may be a little soon.

I dont think it was that telegraphed. Your alternate perfect scenario we have seen a million times. What happened in reality was fresh and original.

On a side note, I hope Morrison does truly stay in the ME scene, but we have seen (many times over) a star at his level have some show-stealing matches with the champ and then be banished back down to the depths inexplicably.

Shelton Benjamin is an example. Also, remember when Matt Hardy was firing on his V1 gimmick, and he and Rey tore the house down over the cruiserweight title, garnering huge ratings? Out of nowhere, Matt's push vanished.

Until you see JM in the main event of a PPV, I would not get too excited.

Posted By: Guest#3140 (Guest)  on August 01, 2009 at 04:46 PM

I agree that the WWE should pair JM with a female, but said female not necessarily need be a ditzy non-wrestling diva. How cool would it be for Morrison and Melina to accompany each other out for championship matches? When is the last time we saw a ME level face with a female by his side?
Wouldnt it be cool to see two solid performers paired, both of who competed for championships?

Good showing for Cryme Tyme. They didn't try too hard on offense as they often do, let the heels (a great Hart Dynasty team) dictate the pace of the match, and the dynamic of having Shad play Ricky Morton and JTG (the more polished wrestler) get the hot tag really worked. If they had gone 5-10 more minuted and did the extended tag formula with JTG doing a heat period too this could have hot **** easily. Kudos to Shad for selling the leg all the way through the interview segment with JeriShow. Cryme Tyme are way over with the crowd right now and are always good on the mic, if they can bring it in the ring like this consistantly we may be looking at new internet darlings.

The E have learned nothing from the attitude era? Leave Morrison how he was, he doesn't have to smile. Leave the characters and let the audience decide who is a face and who is a heel. The wrestling has been getting a lot better lately, don't spoil it with lame-ass face/heel storylines.
Michelle McCool is very good. Layla El is uber hot but a terrible wrestler, she is gonna get hurt. Send her to me for some training ... maybe we will even wrestle. =D Melina vs. McCool = entertainment. And BTW Beth is not as agile as either McCool or Melina, though I'm sure she would stomp both of them in a real fight. Bet woman wrestler = Mickie James. Period. Second = Gail Kim.
"Weeeelll ... it's the Big Big Big Big Show ..." awesome.

Great show, really shows why Smackdown is the best wrestling on tv. Rather then repeat what everyone else said, I have two minor quibbles.

1) The Big Show/Jericho music is awful. Just awful. Didn't go well together at all.

2) I used to LOVE John Morrison's promos. Even before the Dirt Sheet skyrocketed him, I loved his ECW promos. Face-Morrison has had extremely bland promos, with nearly John-Cena levels of pandering and boy scoutness. It's quite annoying. Cena was already massively over before the writers nuetered his character; Morrison doesn't have that going for him yet.

Everybody keeps saying JM has it in the ring, but promos and stuff need work before he is a world champion. This is ridiculous. All it takes for someone to be a world champ is for the script to say "guy becomes world champ."

By this logic, Hardy should not be a world champ. His promos are forced, goofy, and awful. He has an accent that does not work with his character.

Its like you guys forget all this is scripted and plotted.

Jeff - Morrison - **** , IMO .

Matches that are better :

Edge / Cena LMS ,
NWO - Both Elimination chambers ,
HBK / Taker ,
Edge / Jeff Ladder match ,
Jericho / Rey ,
Edge / Morrison ,
Edge / Rey ,
Punk /Hardy .

Not even in the top 10 , I feel , but definitely a very good match .

Posted By: HBK (Guest) on August 01, 2009 at 12:03 AM

It wouldn't matter if he HAD included one of those matches as the best of the year you would STILL complain!!

I read your posts all the time and you always complain about something and act like you know everything!

You sit at home on a saturday night and complain on a website! Why not go out and do something?? Who knows, you might actually have fun?!?!

I doubt it though, you seem like a very miserable person who can't let anyone have their own opinion.

I can't wait until tomorrow and see what or who you are ripping into!

i missed the show, but on paper it looks great, hopefully the main event leads to a hardy/morrison/punk triple threat down the road. unfortunately this could be like those many other times they tease someone being in the picture while not actually putting him in it (jeff hardy with the hhh/cena feud last year comes to mind).
