AWA Championship Wrestling on ESPN Classic

AWA CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING ON ESPN CLASSIC
It’s September 26, 1985 “the greatest night in the history of professional wrestling” according a certain announcer. No, not Tony Schivone, but Larry Nelson. It’s SuperClash, from Chicago, IL. Tonight, on ESPN, we’re going to see three matches from that spectacular card!

Current Champions:
AWA World Heavyweight Champion: Rick Martel
AWA World Tag Team Champions: The Road Warrirors*
AWA Light Heavyweight Champion: Steve Regal
AWA Ladies Champion: Candi Devine **

* Terry Gordy and Michael Hayes won the titles from the Road Warriors at this show, but the decision was reversed.
** Sherri Martel won the title from Candi Devine at this show.

CANDI DEVINE © vs. SHERRI MARTEL (AWA Ladies Title)
We’re joined in progress says Larry, not sure how far though, it appears to be early, since Sherri is stalling and not wanting to get in the ring and wrestle. Candi finally coxes her in and works over her arm with a seated armbar wristlock hold. Sherri tries to get up and escape, but Candi pulls her back down. Sherri escapes by rolling over and getting a headlock on Candi and then pounding her with fists. Sherri whips her into the ropes and Candi appears to try a sunset flip but something goes wrong, it looks like Sherri back dropped her and Candi wasn’t expecting it. She spends the rest of the match holding her head, and Sherri hits a bodyslam and vertical suplex and finishes quickly with a splash off the top. Sherri attacks her afterwards with the belt and does a victory lap.

Larry Nelson with Sherri Martel. Sherri screams a lot, which is why she was later called Scary Sherri. Larry wants to know why she attacked Candi and Sherri says it’s because she was ducking her and because she’s crazy. Yes, she’s the crazy one.

Larry Nelson with Sheik Adnan Al Kaisee and Kamala. He asks why the Sheik brought Kamala. Because he promised the Arab people and winner and he found one, and Kamala is the first of many surprises he has. Larry says that he gets scared when Sheik says that.

Larry Nelson with Jerry Blackwell. Larry tells him that his old enemy is waiting with Kamala. Blackwell isn’t worried though, if the Sheik tries to stick his big nose into the match, he’ll chop the damn thing off.

KAMALA vs. JERRY BLACKWELL (Bodyslam Match)
Kamala and Blackwell have a lot in common other than both being so big. They were both managed by Sheik Adnan Al Kaisee and they both had coffins build just for them (by Mad Dog Vachon and The Undertaker respectively). As for the match, it’s a good cure for insomnia. Kamala chops a lot, and Blackwell doesn’t do anything to really sell other than just sit there. Kamala breaks up the monotony with the occasional kick. Kamala tries for the slam but can’t do it and even tries for a pin and the ref starts to count before he remembers what kind of match this is. Kamala misses a charge into the corner and gets the bodyslam for the win. Sheik attacks, and the jobbers try to save, and Baron Von Rashke runs them off with a baseball bat. So much for Blackwell chopping off the nose.

We interrupt SuperClash for the Mat Classic, going way back to 1973. Da Crusher and Dick the Bruiser against the Texas Outlaws, Dick Murdoch and Dusty Rhodes. It’s somewhat topical though, since it’s also from Chicago. It’s not really shown as a match, just in various short clips. It’s a crazy brawl that ends in a double DQ.

Larry Nelson with Stevens, Bockwinkel, and Zybyszko. Nelson wants to know if they’re ready for Gagne, Hennig, and Hall. Stevens says they’re going to give their opponents a wrestling lesson and it won’t take very long. Bockwinkel agrees with Stevens. Larry is more colorful, they’re going to take those three pukes show then what wrestling is all about, and then send them to the hospital, where they belong

Larry Nelson with Hennig, Hall, and Gagne. Greg says we’ll see who gets the wrestling lesson, because they’ve got a big guy like Hall on their team. Hall says they’re ready and he’s got two good partners. Hennig says they may be out experienced, but they came to Chicago to win!

NICK BOCKWINKEL/RAY STEVENS/LARRY ZYBYSZKO vs. CURT HENNIG/GREG GAGNE/SCOTT HALL
Hennig and Bockwinkel start off with Nick toying with Curt, he’ll hit a hip toss or armdrag and then pose and celebrate. Curt returns the favor with a flurry of armdrags and Nick doesn’t wanna wrestle anymore and tags in Zybyszko. Larry doesn’t stall! He does however find himself on the wrong end of an armbar from Curt, and then the three babyfaces take turns working him over with the hold and occasionally double teaming (or cheating in the case Gagne snapping it over the ropes behind the ref’s back). Larry finally gets a break when he turns Curt’s headlock into a backdrop suplex and tags in Bockwinkel, and they keep Curt in the corner and work him over, and they throw him outside the ring onto the field and work him over some more. Curt gets a few nice teases of making the tag, the best is when he escapes Larry’s abdominal stretch, but gets cut off. A minute or so later, Larry drops his head too early and eats a kneelift. Larry tags Bockwinkel, and he cuts off Hennig. Hennig finally makes the hot tag to Gagne after the collide and he does his usual big bump. All hell breaks loose with all six brawling and Hall pins Stevens after a bodyslam, as the Chicago crowd goes nuts. And so ends another day of wrestling on ESPN.
