411's WWE Smackdown Report 10.09.09
Posted by Joseph F. Martinez on 10.09.2009

Hey Yo! Welcome to 411mania's Friday Night Smackdown review. You didn't come in here for me to ramble on, so let's get to this week's program!

> Hell in a Cell video highlighting the CM Punk-Undertaker match.

> Jim Ross and Todd Grisham run down the scheduled events. An Undertaker interview, Chris Jericho v. Rey Mysterio and a main event of CM Punk v. Batista.

> Tony Chimel is on ring announcing duties tonight and he welcomes Teddy Long into the ring. Long says Smackdown is the dominant brand and talks about the Bragging Rights' stipulation. Long says John Cena is always welcome on Smackdown.

> Before Long can continue, CM Punk's music strikes and the former World Champion gets to the ring. Punk berates Long for trying to get Cena and says the blue brand doesn't need Cena. He informs Long of his guaranteed rematch and complains about his scheduled match with Batista. Punk wants the Undertaker in a submission match with Scott Armstrong as the referee. Long says no but Punk says he makes the shots.

> Long tries to make a rebuttal but Vince McMahon interrupts the two. That strut is glorious. Mr. McMahon shakes hands with both CM Punk and Teddy Long before getting a microphone. McMahon says Long is still on probation and his patience is running thin with Long's management style. McMahon breaks the news that Long had a four way planned for the next PPV with Rey Mysterio, Batista and Punk as the contenders. I'm guessing that's going to happen because Mr. McMahon says the first match of the night starts next. He introduces Rey Mysterio.

> Punk stares down Rey Mysterio and eventually leaves the ring. Ross informs us that the next match is between Mysterio and Chris Jericho.

> Back from the break, a graphic is shown for a later match between Dolph Ziggler and John Morrison.

Mysterio counters the counter and tries to do a springboard attack. Jericho avoids it and gets Mysterio in the Walls of Jericho. Mysterio inches his ways to the ropes but Jericho pulls him to the center of the ring. Rey tries to roll out of the Walls and gets over Jericho but Jericho again gets Rey in position for the Walls. Mysterio counters with a kick and Y2J is in position for the 619. It's successful. Mysterio follows it up with a body splash pin that finishes the match. MYSTERIO DEFEATED JERICHO VIA PINFALL

> After some video highlights of the match, Grisham and Ross take us into this week's Raw Rebound.

Both women make their way to the feet, Eve tries a backsprings splash but McCool kicks Eve's back. McCool tries a suplex but Eve counters into a cradle pinfall that gets two. Eve tries a clothesline but McCool ducks. McCool delivers a huge boot to the jaw that makes a pretty loud sound. McCool pins Eve and gets the three count. McCOOL DEFEATED EVE VIA PINFALL

> Before we go to a commercial break, Grisham informs us that the Undertaker is speaking shortly.

> We're back with the lovely Vickie Guerrero and her boyfriend, Eric Escobar. Teddy Long comes into the room and says that it is his office. Vickie Guerrero is not pleased that Long hasn't booked Escobar into a match. She then goes on a tangent by saying the fatal four way is unfair for the Undertaker and CM Punk. She wants to know why Teddy Long keeps poking a stick at the Undertaker and Long implies Mr. McMahon had something to do with the whole ordeal. Eric Escobar chimes in with some Spanish and leaves the room. Vickie Guerrero reminds Teddy about his probation and also leaves.

I'm surprised Eve has improved. Her match with Michelle was decent.

Very cool to change the banner according to who the champ is.

Though, thoughts and ratings after the matches would be nice. Kind of more of an analysis than a straight recap? Nice work, though.

No star ratings. Thanks.

Were the matches good? Bad?

Needs star ratings. :<
Even if they are objective, they add to the report.
Nice recap, though.

why dont you rate the matches. I know its just opinion but i liked to read what others think about the quality of the matches

Posted By: prdct (Guest) on October 09, 2009 at 10:40 PM

See, what should have happened is me and Punk should have had a stare down and then I would have started flexing and Punk would have fallen to the floor. Hit Batista bomb and win. 38 star match.

Fuck the star ratings jesus christ don't you people have minds of your own?

Posted By: Paul (Guest) on October 09, 2009 at 11:33 PM

keep the no star rating system. i like that it's pissing off all these 'spell things out for us' sheep. it's a report, not a review people. if you want a review, get friends and discuss it.

Posted By: ohmyumbrella (Guest) on October 09, 2009 at 11:39 PM

Exactly. I prefer match ratings of some sort as it serves two purposes for me:

1. It helps me determine how much attention to give something when I get around to watching it.

2. Over time I get a sense of the reporter's tastes and whether or not their similar to mine.

The card looks PPV worthy. =-0

Very, very, very few people can actually do star ratings properly anyway, so don't even bother. Too many assholes on this site misuse stars, like the guy who gave a match the highest rating of all the matches that night, then said the ending makes it the worst match of the night. HUH? The stars are supposed to rate the ENTIRE MATCH, including the ending.

Great way to make CM Punk look like a novice versus Batista who is NOT in contention for the WHC, bravo WWE! I sure as hell can wait till Cena returns to SD because if that does happen I will not waste me time viewing these great reviews. No offense to these guys at 411 but damn WWE is getting stupid. No matter who the heels are, the faces are all what the kids want to see as heroes. I started watching the attitude era and the NWO era consistently and this era sucks! PG13 does not equal ratings and is not exciting.

If you keep going with the no star route, can you add a couple sentences maybe in bold or italicized after each match or segment sharing your thoughts on it.

I watch the show and make my own decisions but I like reading what others thought more than a straight up recap.

And what is so great to the people that are happy there are no star recaps. Do you have any idea how immature you sound?

LOLZ, HA HA, NO STAR RATINGZ FO DA OTHERZ RWEADERIZ. MUAH HA HAZ.

Am I the only one who absolutely hates having to watch Boretista & UT come and ruin a program which had, you know, potential to be something else than the same old faces over and over again in the title scene? I bet Edge comes back, has a short failure of a face-turn, and shortly we'll have Edge/Tista fiesta for the title for the next ten PPVs. Side to side with Orton/Cena for the next twenty PPVs. >_>

Oddly few matches this week, but good stuff, regardless. Excluding the mass-produced UT promo and the ridiculous buryburyburybury-win of Punk.

It really amazes me how from like May onwards Smackdown has become such a great show, it's so much better than Raw or Impact it's not even cose.

Even with major blows like losing Edge, Hardy, Mysterio etc they still keep putting on PPV quality matches every week, this week it was Jericho v Rey & Morrison v Ziggler, 2 great matches.

A best of SD 2009 DVD would be great, look at the matches in the past 6 months alone: Punk-Hardy cage match, Edge-Morrison, Hardy-Morrison World title match, Fatal 4 way with the awesome Hardy v Rey ending, Rey-Morrison IC title match, Punk-Morrison non-title matches, Jericho-Rey series, Edge-Hardy, Edge-Punk, Jericho-Hardy, Edge-Jericho, Punk-Jericho, Edge-Rey, Punk-Umaga, Punk-Rey, Edge & Jericho v Hardy & Rey cage match, 8 man tag on the 10 year show...

When Rey Mysterio was first added to the Hell in a Cell PPV, like a lot of others, I figured he was getting an early release from his suspension...but after seeing the interaction between him and McMahon and his being immediately added to the Bragging Rights title picture, it kind of makes me wonder if maybe there was something to what Rey was saying about the circumstances of the suspension. Remember, there was a lot of noise at first, then both parties got very quiet in a hurry. Then, next time you see Mysterio, he's in a tag team title match a day early, and the next time after that, he's booked in a world championship match, shaking hands amicably with Vince McMahon, and beating Chris Jericho in his first match back on Smackdown. Doesn't look like your usual "you tried to screw me in the media so now I'm gonna bury you" McMahon M.O. to me.

I have a suspicion that Vince had to eat some crow to avoid a lawsuit because Rey may very well have produced that prescription that everyone said was missing, and that a few compromises may have been worked out behind closed doors to avoid any public ugliness.

If so, good for Rey.

The ratings serve to tell the rest of us who don't get time to watch it at first showing if two hours of our time is worth being spent on what appears to be ultra safe booking (reading the recaps)

I don't really care about stars, but I am curious what a recappers thoughts are about what happens on the show. This isn't really to help me decide if I'm going to watch it or not, it's just the fact that hearing other people's perspectives about the action makes the show more interesting to me.

@ To those who complain about star ratings...its a report of the event, so of course its going to be unbiased. if you want ratings, look at the other columns

No Paul, because we havent seen the matches you idiot shit

- JR and Todd really need to stop calling JoMo's Aú Batido kick a "Pele kick". Pele never did anything like that in his career. Just call it a "capoeira kick" or even use the "L-Kick" term from breakdancing if you have to.

- Now that Punk is heel, his music really doesn't fit him. Ironically, the music he used as a face on the indy circuit would fit better now. I'd love to hear him come out to Miseria Cantare.

- When a heel attacks a face post-match after taking a bad beat, he's called "vile" and "dastardly". So, why is it when a face does the exact same thing, he's "not done" with the heel and is "sending a message"? IMHO, Batista looked like a sore loser to me.

solid card. all matches were pretty good.
Mysterio Vs Jericho awesome
McCool vs Eve was very good
Tag Team Match was pretty good as well
Morrison vs Ziggler was well done..kept both looking strong.
Punk vs Batista was good as well, love Punk outsmarting big dave...wasn't crazy about powerbomb at end, but hey, they still pushing Batista threw the roof and thats what good guys do after being outsmarted.

JESUS PEOPLE! If you're interested in a match, then take the time to WATCH IT ON YOUR OWN! Don't take someone elses review about if it was good or not! Judge it yourself you lazy ass people! GOD!!! Can't you make up your own minds if something is good or not! Are you that stupid!!!

The "ratings" do little more than make the writer feel superior and allows the fa(g)nboys the chance to get all bonered up before they watch the show on DVR because real "smarks" NEVER watch it as it airs. They wait for the star ratings to come out while they play Halo and take their asthma medication watching while their favorite wrestling show airs only to watch it right after and not watch the commercials.. that way they can "experience" the matches almost as if they were there live.

Of course they do this all while changing outfits on their CM Punk "collectible action figure" (IE: DOLL)

C'mon you idiots - IT'S WRESTLING!!!!! Ya do know how this started in circus' and stuff right? You do realize you get a hard on for a form of entertainment that is staged and really isn't a sport, right?

Bunch of losers...

For all the recappers out there...
We wanna know:

Did tits pop out?
Who won?
Sure there were no tits?
Was there a "holy shit" moment?
C'mon, not even a nipple?
Etc..

IT'S JUST PRO WRESTLING - AND IT'S NOT EVEN VERY GOOD.

The reason it needs star ratings is to determine how good the match was. It's a great reference for people wanting to do comps. When there are no star ratings, how are they supposed to know how good it was?

Because star ratings often reflect the review and reviewer's own views. Remember when Larry Csonka did star ratings, EVERYONE BITCHED AND BELLYACHED because the ratings were too high or too low.

"When Rey Mysterio was first added to the Hell in a Cell PPV, like a lot of others, I figured he was getting an early release from his suspension...but after seeing the interaction between him and McMahon and his being immediately added to the Bragging Rights title picture, it kind of makes me wonder if maybe there was something to what Rey was saying about the circumstances of the suspension. Remember, there was a lot of noise at first, then both parties got very quiet in a hurry. Then, next time you see Mysterio, he's in a tag team title match a day early, and the next time after that, he's booked in a world championship match, shaking hands amicably with Vince McMahon, and beating Chris Jericho in his first match back on Smackdown."

Your theory could be true, but Rey did not return a day early. He was suspended September 2-30 and October 1, 30 days.

i dont see the point in reading this review. how can i know if the matches were good or not and thus if the show is worth watching? I mean...you give no personal opinions about match qualities and instead just act like a robot .

- When a heel attacks a face post-match after taking a bad beat, he's called "vile" and "dastardly". So, why is it when a face does the exact same thing, he's "not done" with the heel and is "sending a message"? IMHO, Batista looked like a sore loser to me.

Far worse on RAW than it is on SD!. It's so fucking irritating to listen to Coleman and Lawler go on and on during Orton's offense as if they were commentating a funeral. And the moment Cena does whatever, they start creaming themselves. >_>
I mean, srsly. We get it! He's the bad guy. But just because he's the bad guy of the story doesn't mean that he's "evil incarnant" and "personification of malevolence". They make it sound as if whenever he as much as puts Cena in a chinlock, babies die of spontaneous combustion all around the world.

I thought this weeks smackdown was one of the worst ever. IC title match was decent but the rest made me feel like I was watching wcw.why was Vince there he added nothing to the show.at least raw had a decent main event. In the words of Owen Hart...Whos running this popscicle stand?

I prefer match ratings of some sort as it serves two purposes for me:

1. It helps me determine how much attention to give something when I get around to watching it.

2. Over time I get a sense of the reporter's tastes and whether or not their similar to mine.

I agree with both points.

So I guess I'm the only one who pays no attention to star ratings?

At least you would have a good idea as to what was good, what was not, what the best match was, what to check out, etc. Sure the ratings might not be the same as other peoples'. But you would at least have a good idea of how good the match was, even if it's off 1/4 or even 1/2* in your opinion.
