411's WWE Smackdown Report 10.23.09
Posted by Joseph Martinez on 10.23.2009
Bragging Rights is only a few days away but Team Smackdown isn't done making adjustments. Meanwhile, Rey Mysterio and Batista take on Kane and Chris Jericho, John Morrison fights Mike Knox and CM Punk tries to double cross the Undertaker again. All of this and more in this week's Smackdown Report!
> Welcome to this week's Smackdown Recap. I'm the usual host, Joseph Martinez and tonight's show is a good one. I'm not really good with this introduction paragraph deal so let us just get straight to the program.
>Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler are the announcers. The University of South Carolina is playing host for tonight's program.
> Smackdown's Team Captain, Chris Jericho, is out to start the show. They show a graphic for the Bragging Rights Tag Match and a recap of last Monday's Raw-Smackdown scuffle.
> Jericho says his legacy will be further cemented after Sunday. He'll be the face of Smackdown and the mastermind that defeated Team Raw. Chris Jericho isn't sure if the current members of Team Smackdown are worthy of standing in the same ring with him so he's going to find out if they're worthy.
> This brings out JTG. Jericho asks if Shad Gaspard is locked up in jail and JTG tells us he's sick. Jericho says the fact he has the be on the same team as JTG makes him sick. He then calls the crowd germ incubators. Jericho asks JTG if he knows what an honor it is to be on his team and before he can answer, we hear the voice of the lovely Vickie Guerrero. Vickie welcomes us to "the future of Smackdown," Eric Escobar. Cole reminds us of Escobar's win over Matt Hardy last week and the couple makes their way to the ring. Escobar and his awful accent discuss Degeneration X's no-selling of his identity as the crowd chants "Who Are you?" Escobar says he's going to lead Team Smackdown to victory and Dolph Ziggler enters the fray. Ziggler lets the others know that he's going to be the reason why Team Smackdown wins on Sunday. JTG asks Ziggler what he knows about winning and brings up Mr. Ziggles Intercontinental Title woes. JTG berates Dolph Ziggler some more until Drew McIntyre comes into the picture. McIntyre calls himself the secret weapon of Team Smackdown and believes he should be Team Smackdown's Captain.
>Kane's music plays and he stops Drew McIntyre mid-sentence. The Big Red Machine stares down his team members upon his arrival to the ring. Kane says none of the current members of Team Smackdown are worthy of wrestling on the team. Kane and Chris Jericho question the heart of Team Smackdown and inform the team they have created a 4 on 5 tag team match where if the current team loses, they'll be off of the Bragging Rights Team.
> Promo for the John Cena-Randy Orton feud.
> We return in time to see the conclusion of Matt Hardy's entrance and R-Truth's entrance.

Taker stares down Teddy Long which prompts the GM to walk away. Punk takes advantage and hits Taker in the gut with the chair. After some more chair shots, Punk smiles and tries to wake the ref. Scott Armstrong is down and CM Punk locks in the Anaconda Vice. Long calls for the bell but the announcers say only a ref can do that. Long gets a ref who reaches the ring in time for Taker to reverse the Anaconda Vice into the Hell's Gate. Punk taps out and Long grabs his head in dismay.
> The show ends with the arena in Undertaker purple and the Deadman posing in the center of the ring.
>>>QUICK RESULTS<<<
• Matt Hardy, Finlay, R-Truth and The Hart Dynasty def. JTG, Drew McIntyre, Dolph Ziggler and Eric Escobar via pinfall (Hardy pinned JTG)
• John Morrison def. Mike Knox via pinfall
• Dave Batista and Rey Mysterio def. Chris Jericho and Kane via pinfall (Batista pinned Kane)

only the ref can ring the bell? so the nine million other times that we've had to re-live a screw job finish where someone other then the ref rang the bell doesnt matter?

It was great to see Mae Young on WWE programming again. She made the show for me. SmackDown has been strong for most of the year, but it's nice when one can lighten the mood and shed light on one of the funniest performers in the WWE family.

I like the addition of screen caps to a recapl adds a nice touch and helps point out key visuals. Well done.
I do have a question though, when did Ziggler dump Maria? Did I miss that development? What happened there?

Good Smackdown tonight.
Love the new Smackdown team, still think Ziggler and McIntrye will be studs someday, but they have the right guys on there now.
Morrison vs Knox was good. Knox is SO underrated.
Tag Team match was pretty good, but I'll never like BORtista.
Mickie James looked good, Smackdown wome with McCool, Phoenix, Natalya, Layla are pretty solid. Too bad Eve had to go. Trade her for Maria.
Even thou Punk tapped out, though he looked good against Undertaker. No biggie he didn't win here, Undertaker hardly ever loses, somehow Punk wins the title at Bragging Rights, hopefully not to ever lose it to Bortista or Mysterio.

yes, joe... way to expose the swiss-cheese holes of pro-wrestling. Your nine million views of screw-job, non-ref ending matches never mattered & BAM! --- welcome to the world where all nine million matches never happened... you say it does, but we all watched that match & took it for what it was. .... a wrestling match... that must have popped your lima-bean sized brain!!!! Bizzarro land baby!!!
What next, joe??? Hogan shattered his knee-cap beating the iron shiek or Hogan ripped all his muscles in his back slammin the 2 ton Andre the Giant??? Andre was 11 feet tall, y'know?
thanks for blowin the whistle, guy! Let's all cry foul!

This Team Smackdown debacle is giving me flashbacks to when Roddy Piper's ill-fated Team Icon had to be replaced by the Horsemen for WCW Uncensored '97. I wonder if Team Smackdown II was the plan all along or if WWE just got cold feet about the sudden pushes for McIntire and Escobar. I was surprised when the Heart Dynasty wasn't given a spot to begin with.

I believe that was last week, when she cost him the IC title.
Or it may have been the week before, not sure because I watched the last two shows back-to-back last weekend, but at some point over the last two episodes of Smackdown, Maria got dumped.

The Undertaker should stop dying his own hair and get Brutus The F'N Barber Beefcake to do it. Seriously, I've never seen such a bodged job - he looked like he'd applied boot polish to his hair.

thanks for writing such a detailed report. unfortunately i didn't a shit about what you wrote about the matches because you don't say whether the match was good or not
what is the point of reading that much text when u dont know if what happened was good or not. all you get is a play-by-play that can be just as bad as it can be good.
and plaese dont tell me to watch sd instead of reading the reports to know if the match is good or not, because i have no way of watching SD.

Looks like the move to SD might actually help Mickie James. That was the cleanest match she wrestled in a long time. And Layla has surprisingly developed into a decent enough Diva worker.

hmm...it seems weird to see Kane and Matt Hardy work together after that whole Lita/pregnancy storyline a few years back
Posted By: Phil (Guest) on October 24, 2009 at 05:18 PM
Kane has never beat Batista since he let OVW. Not counting the time that he pinned Rey Mysterio at Armageddon 05. And I expect he never will. They way they've booked all the matches between them is that "Kane could never ever defeat Batista if he tried for a hundred years." More or less.

I'm glad they made the changes they did to Team Smackdown, although I would have still kept Ziggler on the team.
I know DX (and Team Raw by proxy) will inevitably be over huge with the live crowd at Bragging Rights and be looked at as the 'face' team in the match, but they at least needed to put some guys on Team Smackdown that the crowd can get behind.
Good move on their part, although I wonder why they ended up doing it the way it all played out in the end.
Posted By: SU_RKO (Guest) on October 24, 2009 at 06:45 PM
@Unholy Meatpuppet
kind of the pot calling the kettle black, huh?
I think G#6969's point was just to watch it and quit whining over small details, it's wrestling.
I like the new Smackdown 7 but I'm a Ziggler fan and hopefully he shows up during the Miz/Morrison match, costing Morrison the win. That's the only way I see his exclusion as O.K.
JTG is going to be a star one day, he just seems to have 'it' plus his fued with Y2J was awesome. Hopefully he breaks into singles, or at least dabbles, & gets himself a title or at least a strong mid-card rivalry.
Matt Hardy needs to go heel again because he blows right now. Does the guy who eats the pin switch brands? I thought I heard that somewhere...
@ Steve-- Ziggler dumped Maria a couple weeks back after she sat in a chair Ziggler planted to use against Morrison. He broke up with her after the match backstage but I think it's an angle to write her out for a while as she's doing "Celebrity Apprentice" then hopefully she returns to Ziggler's side.

This Escobar character reminds me of JBL. His physique and the way he moves are identical. If he picks up a mike I'm changing the channel.

I had high hopes for the Taker/Punk feud but sadly it just reminds me over and over of the feud between Diamond Dallas Page and the Undertaker. The feud which resulted in Taker winning every single match, and dominating most of the match, barely letting Page getting any real offense in, ended up with Sara pinning Page for the 3 count. At least Sara isn't in the picture anymore, but maybe Michelle McCool can fill that role. It would be nice if Punk were able to win at least one match in strong fashion.
