Christian defends the ECW Title against William Regal in Regal's home country!
Welcome to the ECW on SyFy! As always, I am Michael Bauer, your 411 ECW Re-capper. And tonight we are in England, with one huge ECW Title match.
But we start with WWE Hall of Famer Tony Atlas introducing the Abraham Washington show. Washington's entrance makes me hate him even more, as done the Applause sign. He hypes up how huge going international is for him and Tony says the people in England talk funny. Abraham says it is because of their jacked up teeth and wonders how that is possible with free healthcare. He admits to taking the cheap heat (FINALLY!), but he thought it was funny. The fans yell at him to "Go home" but they finally cheer when he mentions William Regal. He then brings out his guest, Yoshi Tatsu, who is in a suit this week. Interesting how many cheers he didn't really get. Yoshi says his English isn't good, but he is nervous. Yoshi goes into the "Thank you" routine with Abraham and Tony just laughs until Washington shuts him up. Washington then asks for Yoshi's expert analysis on the title match tonight. Yoshi says Regal is tough, but Christian will win. Washington didn't understand him and they broke into the greatest line ever!
Yoshi: Don't you understand the words that are coming out my mouth?
Washington: Man, nobody understand the words coming out of your mouth.
AWESOME! Washington asks if Yoshi thinks he is Jackie Chan. Yoshi says if that is true, then he is stupid Chris Tucker. Yoshi follows with his Tony Atlas impression, I guess. Washington closes out the show and bows to Washington, before waving to the crowd after Abraham leaves.
We then go to a video package for Christian defending the ECW Title against William Regal tonight, going back all these months, before we head to commercial.
Paul Burchill (with Katie Lea) vs. Goldust
Paul gets a mixed reaction here, a little worse than I expected. Now, the match with him and the Hurricane is next week? What's the matter? The Hurricane doesn't have a passport while Gregory Helms does? The bell rings and Goldust gets a shoulder block and a quick cover. Burchill gets flipped over after an arm wrench, but connects with a knee to the gut. Burchill has his whip reversed and gets hit with a butt bump by Goldust. Goldust backs Burchill into the corner, but Burchill without a clean break. Goldust misses a charge in the corner and gets his ribs smashed into the ring post. Burchill rams the ribs again into the post after a low dropkick and gets a two count. Burchill locks in the body scissors, but Goldust escapes with elbows. Burchill up first and hits a shoulder to the ribs and gets a near fall. Burchill drives the knee into the back of Goldust, but Goldust fights back with a series of shots to the gut and clotheslines. Goldust tries for the bulldog, but he gets thrown off. Burchill puts Goldust in the ribs and looks to end it, but then…
"STAND BACK! THERE'S A HURRICANE COMING THROUGH!"
Hurricane runs out from the back and distracts Burchill as he just runs around the ring. Goldust catches Burchill from behind and hits the Final Cut and scores the three count at 3;50!
Winner: Goldust
Match Rating: *1/2 The Hurricane coming out was not needed and Burchill really should have won here.
We see highlights from last week of Zack Ryder losing to Shelton Benjamin, thanks to his own distraction in Rosa. He gets a rematch this week on Superstars. Backstage, Zack runs into Rosa and says that no matter what anyone says, Rosa is more than welcome to be in his corner. Rosa walks off and we get another Zack Ryder dream sequence about him and Rosa before we go to commercial.
Backstage, William Regal is gloating to Tiffany about how great it would be when Regal becomes ECW Champion for her status as General Manager. Tiffany wants to gets off to as fresh start, regardless of Regal being champion.
Vance Archer vs. Jason Blackwell
Jason is from Sheffield… he was from Sheffield. We get some pre taped comments that his opponent is about to find out who Vance Archer is. The bell rings Vance just kicks the kid and drills him with a spinning flapjack. He picks up the kid and taunts him, but Jason gets a headlock and is just thrown off. Vance chokes Jason in the corner with his boot and hits a belly to belly suplex. Vance with a scoop slam into the reverse DDT and he ends it at the 1:15 mark.
Winner: Vance Archer
Match Rating: ½* Believe it or not, I thought last week was better.
Backstage, Christian has a serious look on his face was he walks towards the ring. The main event is next.
William Regal gets a pretty good ovation tonight, as you would imagine. But I think Christian got just as good of one. We get the super special ring announcing, but I swear we need a better announcer than this girl for it. The bell rings and there is still 20 minutes until 11 PM on the East Coast. This is a good sign. They lockup and Christian backs Regal into the corner and we get a clean break. They lockup again and Regal gets an arm wrench, but Christian reverses. Regal slips out and they stare down as we go to commercial at the 1:00 mark.
Back at 5:05 and Christian hits a snapmare to send Regal to the floor. Christian hits the baseball slide and rolls Regal in quickly. Regal hits Christian with a knee and a series of European uppercuts. Christian fires back with right hands and barely gets Regal up for a back body drop. Christian gets a near fall and snap mares Regal over, going to the headlock. Regal escapes and whips Christian chest first into the turnbuckle. Christian gets decked with a series of left hands and setup on the top turnbuckle. Christian fires back and hits the high body press for a two count. Regal goes to the second rope for a breath, but Christian jumps on his back not once, but twice before jumping over and hitting the Bossman punch. Christian back up top, but Regal catches him and gets fought off once, but Regal stops it from happening a second time. Regal grabs Christian and hits a suplex double underhook butterfly suplex! Damn! Regal crawls into the cover and gets a two count as we go to another commercial at 9:30.
Back again at 13:30 as Christian misses a baseball slide and gets drilled by Regal with an Exploder Suplex. Regal rolls in Christian and gets a two count. Regal with a high knee lift and another new fall. Christian escapes a sleeper hold as the crowd is now totally behind Regal. Christian charges Regal, but he gets drilled with a huge forearm shiver. Regal chokes down Christian with his boot and puts Christian in the corner. Christian fights out and goes to the second rope, but Regal picks the ankle to get a near fall. Regal going for a cover about every ten seconds before connecting with a series of crossfaces for another near fall. Christian gets to the corner and Regal comes over, but Christian leaps up into the springboard sunset flip. Regal drops down for a near fall and goes to a Full Nelson. Christian is up for a second, but Regal applies more pressure to put him back down. Christian up again and he escapes with a kick. Regal hits a series of forearms to the back of the head, but Christian hits the KillSwitch out of nowhere! Christian crawls into the cover, but Regal kicks out at two! Regal hits a kick to the face from his knees and gets another near fall. Christian p quickly though and hits a running low clothesline for two. Regal smashed into the turnbuckle, but he blocks the tornado DDT and drills Christian with a haymaker to send the champ to the floor. Regal tries to pull Christian back in, but Christian punches him off and goes up for two missile dropkicks and another two count. Christian lines up Regal, but Regal with a huge forearm. Regal misses the knee trembler, but connects on the rebound and gets yet another two count. Christian tries for the KillSwitch again, but Regal reverses into the Regal Stretch! Christian gets his arm free and somehow breaks Regal's grip and elbows his way out. Regal charges as Christian gets up and hits a dropkick. Christian connects with diving spinning elbow and has the Killswitch blocked again. Regal hits an Exploder Suplex and again misses the knee trembler! Christian boots Regal and hits the Killswitch again! Christian gets the cover and three count at 23:20 as the crowd's mixed reaction comes into full bloom.
Winner and still ECW Champion: Christian
Match Rating: ***1/2 Great match between these two, as you couldn't expect much less.
A great match between Christian and Regal and a Rush Hour reference, can't ask for anything more

I can't believe they kept the belt on Christian. Great match but I wish Regal would have won the title

Seemed strange but it did make sense for Hurricane to cost Paul the match, hence building to their big 'blowoff' match next week on ECW.
Posted By: Logic (Guest) on November 10, 2009 at 11:17 PM
Good report. This was the last ECW I couldnt watch people of the WSOP and now that is over so I will catch it next week.
Looks like WWE teased that crowd into thinking Regal was going to win. Maybe that's why they were so dead on Raw.

Good to see former TNA star, Dallas, fit in on ECW as Vance Archer. COOL!
Posted By: Nice (Guest) on November 10, 2009 at 11:15 PM
I'd complain about Regal not winning AGAIN but considering how a year ago he was losing to Jamie Noble, this is probably an improvement.

Take it easy Bill, I never said anything about the match quality- just the outcome.
Posted By: FUZEY (Guest) on November 11, 2009 at 12:28 AM
It's obvious that Burchill is going to lose the mask vs. ECW career match (since Helms has always been a more popular and marketable star with the mask rather than without) so with them deciding to put Christian over (a decision I'm just *fine* with, thank you very much) the bait-and-switch makes sense from the standpoint of not having to buttf*ck the British fans twice in one hour.
Still, I wish they had brought Pirate Paul back at the same time they were dusting off the old gimmick for Helms. Lord knows Burchill was way more over and motivated then than he is now.

Was the opening segment as painful as this review made it seem?
Posted By: Brad B (Guest) on November 11, 2009 at 01:50 AM
It's odd. I like both Christian and William Regal so much that no matter who won and who lost I know I'd end up being both happy and sad.
Conversely, RAW's WWE title is being fought for between three guys I can't stand; none of which deserve to be holding gold right now.
*sigh* If only Regal could go back to RAW and knee tremble the crap out of Cena. A guy can dream.

ECW has been going downhill since Matt Hardey left.
Posted By: who cares (Guest) on November 11, 2009 at 04:45 AM
Regal SHOULD HAVE WON.
Posted By: who cares (Guest) on November 11, 2009 at 04:47 AM
Christian wins! Sweet! Now he will almost certianly become the longest combined reigning WWE ECW Champion to date. In about 6 or 7 days anyway.
Then maybe he can lose it to Regal.
Posted By: Sev (Guest) on November 11, 2009 at 04:52 AM
maybe regal is gonna manage danielson and help him dethrone the ecw champ
Posted By: christy (Guest) on November 11, 2009 at 05:18 AM
Regal lost...oh my god. A Champ retained?? Most ppl sux on here. If Christian lost you would have complained that the title shuffled around too much. Great match by these two, and no reason Regal cannot get another title shot in the future.
More Katie Lee! Don't want Burchill to lose next week!!
Vance Archer...hmmmm, dude is Big I'll give him that, not a bad wrestler. We shall see.
Posted By: DCFlash (Guest) on November 11, 2009 at 10:16 AM
Since Burchill lost this week, he's beating Hurricane next week.
Posted By: Erik (Guest) on November 11, 2009 at 07:20 AM
I really think they dropped the ball here. Regal is currently the only believable challenger on ECW for Christian's title, he has more experience of training younger guys than Christian does, he's never held a World title (and only one or two at a stretch Englishmen ever have done), Christian's dying to move away from the show and go to Smackdown, and they were in England. Every sign pointed to Regal winning so I guess they either decided to swerve everyone or they're just worried they can't rely on Regal as a champion given his health problems, age, and drug suspensions. That didn't stop them with Jeff though, did it.
Brilliant match, though.

Statler:The openign segment wasn't half bad.
Waldorff:You're right! It was all BAD!
Posted By: Statler & Waldorff (Guest) on November 11, 2009 at 08:22 AM
Burchill was certainly more over as pirate because he was a face and was cheered by the younger fans and the kids with that goofy gimmick. I think he's really motivated now cause at leats they're doing something with him. There's been a time during the feud vs Hurricane that I hoped they were going with a return of a heel Pirate Burchill, it would have made the feud more complex and interesting, just to show he could have been "someone else" too, a hero in the eyes of the kids acting as a face for a week or two, but you never get complex booking for a midcard feud, and this was a much better feud than most. Probably next week Hurricane will get the win and Burchill will end up on Smackdown, probably to have matches vs R-Truth, Finley, Matt Hardy, Morrison ecc. Paul is great and I wish him success, hopefully the bookers can write something decent for him and Vince will give him a nice push. I'm fine with Christian defending the title, if they'll keep Christian with the gold till the Rumble I hope he'll turn heel at that time with Shelton Benjamin winning the ECW title at Wrestlemania. It's about time they do something with him.
Posted By: Max (Guest) on November 11, 2009 at 08:33 AM
1) Regal should've won the belt.
2) I really hope they're holding out on moving Christian to Smackdown because of Edge.
3) Dream sequences on a fucking wrestling show make me glad I only read recaps.

"The fans yell at him to "Go home""
Do they think he wants to be in their country?
Posted By: Propagandhi (Guest) on November 11, 2009 at 10:01 AM
I was there last night. The title match was awesome and the crowd was all over it which was good. Obviously wanted 'face for a week' Regal to win though.
Posted By: ManUp (Guest) on November 11, 2009 at 10:09 AM
Needs more Katie Lea
Posted By: Louwax (Guest) on November 11, 2009 at 12:39 PM
I agree with some that Regal should have won but Christian is the "face" of ECW. Granted, the face chasing the heel for the title is always better. I think that they will be put Danielson on ECW & I also think they may begin to put more emphasis on Shelton Benjamin who would make an excellent top contender.
Posted By: Tim (Guest) on November 11, 2009 at 01:45 PM
I love the ECW belt is the most prestigious belt at the minute. Christian has defended the hell out of it.
Posted By: Parxy (Guest) on November 11, 2009 at 01:45 PM
exactly and i think WWE has finally realized the fans don't want two month title reigns anymore.
they have given the ECW Title so much cred through Christian, I just wish they would do it with the two other world titles
Posted By: lurker (Guest) on November 11, 2009 at 02:26 PM
Does Regal move any merchandise? If he won the title, what are the prospects of him selling more merchandise? So what would the WWE gain from having Regal win the ECW championship.
While there is a certainly a "deserve" factor - I think that keeping Christian as a long term champion only helps to cement the legitamacy of the ECW title.
Posted By: SpankyHamm (Guest) on November 11, 2009 at 03:13 PM
Moving merch doesn't equal a title reign...Christian would move the same ammount of merch without the title so put it on Regal so you can transition the belt onto a new face in a well built feud to help someone else build a fan-base and be able to sell merch.
Good point after that though.

Christian/Regal was just awesome. The Regal Stretch where he had Christian's arm trapped underneath him and Christian when he got it loose he was actually teasing the tap motion, Regal's suplexes, the false finish on the short knee trembler, the count-out tease... there was just so much drama. Title matches never have that element of excitement to them anymore. I will take that match over Orton trying to blow-up Cena with pyrotechnics and hitting him with a kendo stick any day.
It was an awesome touch that the setting had so much to do with the match. I'm glad Christian won, because winning against tough circumstances is what adds value to a title, but I would have totally believed a Regal victory because of his homeland support. ECW is THE show right now.

"Was the opening segment as painful as this review made it seem?"
Wouldn't know. I see Abe Washington, I excersize the fast-forward (I do it with DX on RAW, excepting during a match, too). I would recommend that.
Gotta admit, I thought Regal was going to win this one. While the smark in me wonders where they go from here, the fan in me is satisfied with an enjoyable match.
Posted By: G-Walla (Guest) on November 11, 2009 at 11:28 PM
Vance Archer is the former Lance Hoyt from TNA.
Unless the guy has improved his game while he was in FCW, he's going to stink up ECW to new levels of SUCK.
Posted By: Wojcik (Guest) on November 12, 2009 at 12:44 AM
Best ECW match of the year. One of the best of the year overall.
Stop shiting over Christian winning. It was on ECW not Wrestlemania, get the fuck over it.
Posted By: Morgan Fisher (Guest) on November 12, 2009 at 01:47 AM
This is the problem with great matches like Christian vs Regal on free TV: If Christian wins, people bitch. If Regal wins, people bitch. This is why I tell the IWC to fuck off and enjoy the shows as a fan.
Posted By: Guest#0326 (Guest) on November 12, 2009 at 09:54 AM
Shock of shocks, the "epic" Christian-Regal encounter ends with the old "guy reverses opponent's finisher into his own finisher" sequence we've only seen about a million times in the last three years. Sheesh. I swear, every WWE main event ends that way now days.
