411's ECW on SyFy Report 11.17.09
Posted by Michael Bauer on 11.17.2009
CM Punk makes his return to ECW as The Hurricane and Paul Burchill finally settle the score once and for all!
Welcome to the ECW on SyFy! As always, I am Michael Bauer, your 411 ECW Re-capper.
And we open with… CM PUNK!!! HELL YEAH! Punk says how he started in ECW and was ECW Champion before becoming three time straight edge World Champion. Punk says that him going to the ring tonight will be the loudest ovation in ECW history. For tonight Christian will team with R-Truth to face William Regal and CM Punk in a Survivor Series Preview.
Zack Ryder and Rosa Mendes come down to the ring and Ryder just can't stop smiling. Not that I fully blame him. Ryder says he is not here to talk about him and re-introduces us to Rosa Mendes. Ryder says his whole life has changed and just melts over Rosa. He says he so lucky to have her in his corner. She starts blabbing about comparing shopping to Ryder's match with Benjamin last week. Ryder says he wants Rosa in his corner again when he challenges Shelton again. And out comes Shelton to stop Rosa from gabbing, much to the crowd's pleasure. Shelton accepts the challenge, but he wants Ryder in the corner so that he can wrestle Rosa. Shelton calls Ryder a tool, but that he should change his name to Black & Decker, because he has become a power tool. Ryder will take the match, but not now and says Shelton should never disrespect his girl. Rosa gets in Shelton's face long enough for Ryder to get a cheap shot and bail. Shelton looks barely faced by the shot.
We get a video package for The Hurricane and Paul Burchill, encompassing the whole feud over the past few months. They meet for the last time, next.
Career vs. Mask - Paul Burchill (with Katie Lea) vs. The Hurricane
Just by the look on Paul's face, I can feel like it is his last match on ECW. It's almost like a very bad poker face. The bell rings and they lockup, with Burchill getting a go behind. Hurricane whips Burchill around and both get a near fall. Hurricane with a headlock takedown and backs up Burchill to the corner. Burchill goes to the floor after the break and comes back in, quickly backing Hurricane into the corner. Hurricane whipped across and he leaps up and sends Burchill to the floor with a head scissors. Hurricane runs off the ropes and connects with a flying tope. Burchill rolled in and nearly gets pinned. Hurricane drops the leg and goes to the headlock. Burchill whips Hurricane and Katie Lea grabs the leg of Hurricane. The superhero turns around and Burchill drills him with a back suplex. Both men are down as we go to commercial at 3:15.
Back at 6:30 and Burchill has Hurricane in a chin lock, but Hurricane fights back to his feet. Hurricane punches his way out, but has a whip reversed into a short-arm clothesline. Burchill drops the knee down on the chest and go to a version of a sleeper. Hurricane tries to punch out and slips out of a back suplex, but gets killed with a clothesline for another two count. Burchill stomps away on Hurricane and starts punching away in the corner. Hurricane whipped across, but he avoids the charge in the corner. Hurricane and Burchill trade right hands. Burchill backs off the ropes and Hurricane connects with the Lou Thesz Press. Burchill reverses a whip, but runs into a boot. Burchill now send into the corner and Hurricane hits a flying clothesline for two. Burchill slips out of the Eye of the Hurricane and hits a leaping back heel kick for two. Burchill again slips out of the Eye and hits a Northern Lights Suplex for two. Hurricane sent to the corner, but he gets a boot up and hits the Hurricarana for two. Hurricane lines up for the Shining Wizard, but Katie Lea again distracts the Hurricane and Burchill throws him chest first into the corner. Burchill connects with the Jackhammer and Hurricane kicks out at two! Hurricane slips out of a second one and hits the Eye of the Hurricane, but Burchill kicks out at two! Hurricane goes up top, but gets caught. Burchill also climbs up and Hurricane gets the advantage. Hurricane leaps off the top rope and connects with what looked like a swinging neckbreaker off the turnbuckle. Dang! Hurricane crawls over and gets the three count at 12:55 to send Paul Burchill packing from ECW! After the bell, Burchill realizes what happened and Katie Lea joins him in the ring, half in tears.
Winner: The Hurricane
Match Rating: **3/4 That was a great feud ender as I could ask for not much more.
Backstage, Punk meets up with Tiffany and understands that she is not straight edge, as she likes to drink. Tiffany says that she is not some prude anti-social person and that Punk needs to loosen up, have fun, and be a human being. Punk sold that so good and Tiffany didn't even need to act there.
And did you know? Last week, more men watched ECW than Larry King Live. No shit, really?
Vance Archer vs. Johnny Andrews
Ok, time to die Johnny. The bell rings and Johnny goes down in one punch before getting thrown chest first into the corner. Vance stomps away and then squashes his chest on the post. Vance mounts and punches away before lifting the kid up and spinning him into a flapjack. Vance ends it at 1:00 after connecting with the scoop slam into the reverse DDT.
Winner: Vance Archer
Match Rating: ¼* Squash match, what else can be said?
After a Survivor Series rundown, we got backstage, where CM Punk runs into Christian. Punk reminds us all that he used to be champion and Christian is interested in straight edge life. Christian asks him if he can hold hands with a girl and if he gets grounded for missing curfew. Christian gets the cheap pop and calls Punk a nerd. Punk asks for a little respect as a former ECW, Tag Team, and World Champion and Christian says that's the point. Punk was a champion, Christian still is.
Back from the break and we get the New York video package from last night. Now, this made sense while in Madison Square Garden, but not when in Philadelphia. But this video is actually edited to include the main event from last night.
CM Punk and William Regal vs. ECW Champion Christian and R-Truth
Josh Matthews bring up the Second City Saint reference for CM Punk, which now definitely makes me not miss Matt Striker. Punk and Regal shake hands after seeming to get on the same page quickly. R-Truth actually seemed to get the best reaction somehow. No idea how. I'm actually surprised he didn't have Christian say "What's Up!" Nah, too many bad memories from the Dudley Boys. The bell rings and Christian starts with Punk. Punk shoves him and gets shoved down. Christian goes after Regal and tags in R-Truth. They hit stereo dropkicks on Regal and Punk as we go to commercial after a quick 50 seconds.
We come back to the action at 4:50 and Regal gets brought down with a head scissors by R-Truth. Punk gets tagged in and R-truth throws him to the floor. Regal comes over to check on Punk and they both get drilled with the baseball slide by Christian and a dive to the floor by R-Truth. R-Truth gets cheap shotted by Regal and Punk is ready, attacking the knee that Regal went after. Regal tagged in and he drops the knee on R-Truth's knee. Punk tagged back in and he twists the leg around his knee, screaming at Christian about who's the nerd now. Punk tags in Regal, who keeps R-Truth from the tag. Regal jerks the knee and gets a near fall, before tagging in Punk. Punk with a scoop slam, but he misses a leg drop. Punk dropkicks the knee of R-Truth and tags in Regal, who kicks the leg before bringing him up, but R-Truth hits an enziguri. Christian gets the tag, as does Punk. Christian hits a series of haymakers and brings Punk to the corner for the Tornado DDT, which gets two. Christian knocks off Regal and hits the second rope diving elbow. Punk blocks the KillSwitch, Christian block the Go2Sleep, Punk blocks again and hits the high knee in the corner, but Christian blocks the bulldog and hits the inverted DDT. Regal breaks up the pin and R-truth attacks, but hurt his leg doing a dropkick. Christian goes for the KillSwitch again, but Regal hits the Knee Trembler. Punk lifts up Christian and GO2SLEEP! Punk covers the ECW Champion and gets the three count at 11:00.
Winners: CM Punk and William Regal
Match Rating: **3/4 Pretty good tag match here, but can't say I agree with Christian eating a pin.
Burchill hit the PELE!!! He did land straight on his head, but atleast it was a new 'WWE move'.
Posted By: True (Guest) on November 17, 2009 at 11:16 PM
I agree with Christian 'eating the pin' because with Paul off ECW now, there is nobody left to feud with Christian, so why not Punk?
Posted By: Jimmy Ricky (Guest) on November 17, 2009 at 11:17 PM
Nice show all around, but Philly seemed dead, which is strange.
Posted By: Alex Wright (Guest) on November 17, 2009 at 11:18 PM
By calling himself a former ECW champion and three time world champion, Punk is admitting that the ECW belt isn't a real world belt. I mean, we all know that is true, but the WWE shouldn't put it like that.
The Hurricane-Burchill feud doesn't necessarily end there. It would be nice to see Burchill on the mid-card of Smackdown or RAW, but he could return to ECW in a mask to continue this feuds. Let's just hope not.

Punk vs. Christian for World Heavyweight title would be awesome
too bad that wont happen
Punk will take the ic belt from morrison
R Truth will cheap win the ic belt from punk

If we could get CM Punk vs Christian as something long-term, that would be awesome. Have Christian end up pinning Punk at survivor series, and Punk returning the favor later by getting Christian to drop the ECW title. Have CM Punk stop ECW wrestlers from being traded to smackdown somehow by kicking Teddy Long's ass or something, preventing Christian from getting revenge. Then have him sneak in some three-way trade between all three brands that gets Christian onto smackdown.

First CM Punk tagged with Orton earlier this year, which made no sense and they never explained. Now he's tagging with Regal, which makes even less sense and they never explained!

Is that true? He didn't hold the WWE Title but the World Title so I think you might be mis-reading it slightly.

But Burchill is a big dude, so it's just that much more impressive when he does it. Don't see Kane busting that out anytime soon.
Posted By: Guest#5361 (Guest) on November 18, 2009 at 12:52 AM
I wish ECW would get over the phenomenon of having a big guy that squashes someone every week. I really hope Archer's matches don't start ending with Koslov and Jackson coming down to the ring and taking turns doing their finishers on his squash opponent. I think Archer looks like a good big man, but his look is so bland. WWE cleaned him up too much and he needs more distinct gear.

"Is that true? He didn't hold the WWE Title but the World Title so I think you might be mis-reading it slightly.
Posted By: Gavin (Guest) on November 18, 2009 at 12:43 AM"
No, by saying he's a three time world champion and an ECW champion, he's acknowledging his three World Heavyweight Title reigns AND adding his ECW title reign so he's talking about 4 separate runs as a champion. He's not saying one title was the WWE Title, another the World Heavyweight Title, and the other the ECW title. The poster you quoted pointed out that by Punk saying he's a three time world champion (all of them the World Heavyweight Title) and an ECW champion, it came across as Punk not recognizing the ECW title as a true world title because otherwise he'd have said he was a 4 time world champion INCLUDING the ECW title.

Burchill is the f**kin' man. Period. That was a damn fine match. Unfortunately you don't get to see these random matches on DVD in any form. If they decided to make some kind of Best of ECW on SCi-Fi '09 DVD, I would hope that match makes it.

Christian & R-Truth... team TNA!
Posted By: Guest#3487 (Guest) on November 18, 2009 at 01:57 AM
Burchill's Pele was bad but still sweet, I was like "wtf!" when he did it. Kinda like when Murdoch used to bust out the Canadian Destroyer.
Bourne used to use the Pele in ECW, I don't watch RAW so I dunno about there.
I really thought Punk said he was the "only three time world heavyweight champion", which is incorrect as Undertaker is in his 3rd.
Also, I don't think your average fan is going to take Punk's comments as "I was an ECW Champion and a World Champion, the ECW title isn't a world title." But rather the ECW title is a distinct title, much like the Intercontinental Title is not the United States Championship no matter that they are proverbial equals.
I mean as much as people say "World Champion, WWE Champion" I really do think your casual fan would be much more likely to associate "World Champion" with the Big Gold Belt nowdays. Maybe not back in 2003-2002, but it's been 7 years, TBGB is the World Champion, that's how it is.

Punk & Regal will be on Team Orton at Survivor Series facing Team Kofi with Christian and Truth. Pay attention.
Paul Burchill may be gone from ECW, but what about (wait for it)... PIRATE PAUL!??! (never happen, but I'd mark for it)

y2kev,you do realize that Punk is on the same Survivor Series team as Regal, right? Or that Christian and R-truth are on the other team in the same match? The match was a preveiw for the PPV.

Burchill has a great moveset when he's allowed to show hiw skills and the great thing is he moves really well for a guy his size and actually sells in a fantastic way moves not so easy to sell for a big guy, see the Hurricarana, he's already hit the Pelè kick at least 4-5 times in ECW.

Hitting the Pele was cool.
Hey Johnny Rock, Punk said he was the only 3 time STRAIGHT EDGE World Champion. This is true!!

New WWE move? As if, he's done it two seperate times in the past few months, not including this episode.
Posted By: Guy (Guest) on November 18, 2009 at 10:22 AM
Burchill's been hitting the Pele for months. He used it in the same match that he busted out the Super Fisherman Buster. He pulled out a couple of other new moves in that same match. It's kind of like when Kofi started using the SOS and everyone flipped out, even though he'd already been using it for 6 months.

Posted By: Karatgold24 (Guest) on November 18, 2009 at 10:41 AM
Punk/Regal kinda made sense even outside of the fact of them being on the same team at SS. I recall reading something about Regal having pill or alcohol issues a few years ago. Last i heard, he was still clean, so Punk would respect that. Plus Punk is a competitive guy and the short feud with Regal was pretty competitive from what i remember. Mutual respect between heels makes just as much sense as mutual respect between faces.

Actually, Burchill hits that move on a pretty regular basis. It is almost a signature move for him. The one in this show was not his best, unfortunately, but it is still impressive to see how agile he really is.
Too bad he isn't in better with the WWE brass. This is one of the wasted talents on the roster right now (IMHO).
Posted By: HalfABubbleOff (Guest) on November 18, 2009 at 11:48 AM
The idea of Paul Burchill and Katie Lee coming back as masked competitors is nice but I don't see them staying in ECW. I just hope Vince will give Paul the push he deserves on Smackdown.
Posted By: Max (Guest) on November 18, 2009 at 12:05 PM
Burchill was better in FWA.
Posted By: Relly (Guest) on November 18, 2009 at 12:18 PM
If you noticed at the beginning of the main event, after the heels both made their entrance, Regal approached Punk upon entering the ring and Punk was audibly saying "we're friends now!" I thought it was a great touch, explaining why two former rivals would work as a unit in the match. Punk and Regal fixed that plothole themselves.
I thought Burchill looked noticeably upset during his entrance, appearing to be almost in tears as he awaited the Hurricane's arrival. Did anyone else notice the black armband, signifying that someone had died? Burchill looked like he was fighting back tears until a few moves into the match.
Posted By: Damion (Guest) on November 18, 2009 at 12:30 PM
Why is Punk taking steps backward? He's now on ECW? How do you go from World's Only Straight Edge Champion to World's Only Straight Edge Chump?

No, he said he was a 3-time World Heavyweight Champion. WWE calls the belt Undertaker holds the World Heavyweight Championship. The belt John Cena holds is the WWE Championship. And Christian has the ECW Championship.

3 Major Championships in WWE.
The WWE Heavyweight Title -(short) WWE Champion
The ECW Heavyweight title - (short) ECW Champion
The WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT Title. - (short) WORLD CHAMPION
Punk has been World Champion and ECW Champion. Never been WWE Champion.

We've seen this movie before Burchill comes back in a mask and wins a 'contract' with ECW. I mean it has been only about 6 weeks before they elt The Miz do that right, so I suspect by Valentine's Day Burchill will be holding some ECW gold.

Apologies, ECW doesn't air until Friday where I live, so I just based my comment on what I read in the recap and didn't know they had booked the Survivor Series match.
Match aside, I still think that CM Punk's two major rivals in the past year or two were Orton and Regal, and it would've been nice to have a segment where Punk explains why he's cool with these guys now. Especially Regal, considering he has as much of a drug abuse history as Hardy!

call me crazy if you want, but i have a theory for CM Punk vs Christian at Mania
as you all know taker has bad knees and is pretty hurt at the moment. he tombstoned cena on raw which gives reason to believe they are going to face at mania.
in order for it to happen, one or both of them will have to drop their title, so at TLC next month, Punk regains the title off of Taker in a TLC match.
at the rumble, cena and punk can retain whilst Christian wins the rumble (previous history shows that the ecw champ can be in the rumble)
orton cant face cena for the title, but whos stopping him going into the chamber at NWO? cena can drop the title to orton or whoever so at Mania we have:
CM Punk vs Christian (royal rumble winner) - World Title
WWE Title - who gives a shit, maybe Orton vs MVP? (I don't really like raw atm)
Undertaker vs John Cena
HHH vs HBK
Jericho vs Edge
MITB (JoMos year)
and whatever else they decide to give us

Obviously since Burchill's main rival the Hurricane is a superhero he must come back under a mask to avenge this defeat. I'm pretty sure its a law in the Marvel and DC universes. Just bring out a new wrestler in a few weeks called the Ripper or something and let Katie act oblivious.

There's just something very, very wrong about a TV show marketing itself to kids and saying, "It's COOL to drink! Don't be a PRUDE! Drink so you can be SOCIAL and have friends!"
I'm kinda wondering why the PTC isn't all over this.
