411's ROH on HDNet Report (11.26.09): The Young Bucks vs. The American Wolves (11.23.09)
Posted by Aaron Hubbard on 11.26.2009

We start with a recap of Bryan Danielson's farewell before Mike Hogewood and Dave Prazak welcome us to the show.

Kenny King w/Rhett Titus vs. Brent Albright
It's a bad sign when the guy on the outside gets the first chant, but "Hepa-Titus" is pretty funny. Brent starts things with a headlock and Kenny gets a headscissors. Albright escapes and hits another headlock takedown, and this time King has to work to push Brent into the headscissors. Ah, the little things. Brent does another headlock takedown, but King switches it up by standing up and then tripping Albright. Kenny gets cocky, but he gets an armbar off the next lock-up. Brent outwrestles him and grabs a headlock and then a hammerlock. Kenny surprises me by not hitting an elbow to escape and instead countering to an overhead armdrag with a knip-up for good measure. He gets cocky and Albright hits a dropkick, and then his own overhead armdrag with knip-up. Brent starts dancing. God help us all.

Kenny runs into a drop toehold, but now Albright gets too cocky and takes a drop toehold from King, but into the buckles. Kenny takes too long to deliver a chop and Brent hits a pair of chops. Kenny reverses an Irish Whip and ducks to avoid a springboard crossbody from the second rope, but Brent sees it and goes to the top for a crossbody and gets two. Albright gets caught with the telegraph kick but pulls Kenny to the mat and grabs the Crowbar. Kenny gets the ropes and goes outside with Rhett. Brent proves he is, in fact, a meathead by chasing after Titus and getting caught with a clothesline from King. Kenny gets two back inside, targets the back and applies a surfboard clutch. Albright fights back and then counters a back body drop with a sunset flip with some impressive height on it. He only gets two and King catches a kick, spins Brent around and hits a corkscrew kick. Dang.

Kenny meanders for a bit and gets two off a kick to the ribs. Albright starts fighting back with punches but King goes to the eyes. Brent reverses a corner whip and Kenny jumps over Brent, does a handspring and connects with the double knees to the back. King wants the Royal Flush but Albright lands on his feet and hits a uranage. Both men take time getting to their feet and Brent wins a punching exchange. Brent starts with the standard babyface comeback and hits a leaping heel kick. He runs into a boot, but Kenny runs into a powerslam but it only gets two. King goes to the eyes, EXPLODER TO THE FLOOR BY ALBRIGHT!

Brent hits the ropes and connects with a dive. Titus tries to interfere but gets sent into the barricade for his troubles. Kenny tries a springboard crossbody but Albright catches him and slams him into the barricade. Nice spot as Brent tries to throw King back inside and Kenny holds onto the ropes. Albright tries a suplex back into the ring but Titus trips up Brent and Kenny covers for three. Crappy finish, average match with one big spot and a couple of subtle ones.
Winner: Kenny King (via suplex counter and Titus interference) **1/2

Brent starts beating up both King and Titus, but ROH World Champion Austin Aries comes out and we get a beatdown. Titus nails Albright with a chair shot, and they tease the spike piledriver that injured Jerry Lynn, but Colt Cabana is out for the save.

Our main event is an ROH World Tag Team Title Match, as The American Wolves defend against The Young Bucks. Matt and Nick Jackson cut a promo about how important the belts are, since ROH actually HAS a tag team division. Generic promo, but at least they sound comfortable talking as opposed to how The Hardy Boyz would sound incredibly forced in their promos.

Sal Rinauro vs. D-Lo Brown
My prediction is that this will not go to the fifteen minute time limit. D-Lo allows the handshake and starts to turn around, but Sal holds on and tries in vain to whip Brown. D-Lo pulls Rinauro in and hits a chop. He punches Sal in the jaw, hits a clothesline, and throws him out. Crowd is still into Brown big-time. Sal hits a shoulder to the gut, tries it again and eats D-Lo's knee. Brown pulls Sal onto the top rope and hits a stunner off the ropes. Brown goes outside to post something on Twitter. Win. Sal takes advantage of the distraction with a few punches, but D-Lo catches him in a fireman's carry. It almost looks like he's going to lose his footing but he catches himself, and turns the move into a Rydeen Bomb to get the three.
Winner: D-Lo Brown (via fireman's carry into Rydeen Bomb) 1/4*

Kyle Durdan tries to get a word from Nigel McGuinness on his rumored departure. By rumored, we mean that he's semi-main eventing PPVs with Kurt Angle. Nigel refuses to comment. But he comes down to the ring with a microphone, so it looks like he wants to say a few words to the crowd.

"How do you some up six years of your life in three minutes? You can't. You simply can't. So maybe all I can do is say, ‘Thank you.' Right now, there is one person that I want to say, ‘Thank you,' to, and I know he can hear me and I know he knows who he is. And you know, I wasn't actually planning on doing this, but you know I want to go back there and bring him out, because he's really meant the world to me, and he's a little bit shy, but hopefully I'll get him to come out."

Nigel goes to the back and decides to do an introduction.

"Ladies and gentlemen, without this guy, I would not be here today. And that man is…NIGEL MCGUINNESS!"

Awesome.

"That's right! It's me who believed in myself when everybody else doubted me. It's me who refused to quit no matter how many injuries I had. And it is me who won the World Title right here in Ring of Honor because I refuse to say, ‘Die!' So, ‘Thank you, Nigel McGuinness!'"

The crowd follow suit with chants of, "Thank you, Nigel!"

"I get the point. If any of you don't agree with that sentiment, you can kiss my beautiful British ass, because I am leaving the building. That's right! You said I couldn't, you said I wouldn't. Well, I am. This is the last time you will see me on Ring of Honor TV. This is the last time you will here me in Ring of Honor TV. I am leaving on a jet plane and I don't know when I'm gonna be back again."

We see footage of Nigel leaving the building. Nice heel send-off.

Now we get Davey Richards and Eddie Edwards thoughts on the main event. They don't seem to be taking them too seriously. Now the Young Bucks have to have a great showing.

The Super Smash Bros. vs. John Kermin & Brandon Day
Glad to see these guys got a second look. The jobbers do a Pearl Harbor Job and throw out Player Uno, and hit a double back elbow on Player Dos. Dos catches a kick and then gives Kermin's foot to the referee so Uno can hit clothesline, and Uno gives a high ten to the ref. They hit an avalanche/619 combo in the corner, and then a sidewalk slam/springboard elbow drop combo gets two for Dos. Kermin drives Dos to the corner and Day tags in. Day hits a backdrop suplex and Prazak works in "external occipital protuberance". Dos takes a double bag body drop from the jobbers but kicks out at two. Kermin avoids a springboard crossbody so the boring beatdown continues. Dos finally breaks it up with his double Pelé Kick.

Uno is in with a clothesline on Kermin, a leg lariat on Day, and a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker on Kermin. Day misses a big boot and gets hit with a forearm shot. John starts taking over with clubbering offense and back body drops Uno to the apron. Uno gets a sunset flip and Day holds Kermin's hands to try to get a pin, but the ref sees it and Dos takes Day out with a dive and Uno gets the pin.
Winner: The Super Smash Bros (via sunset flip on John Kermin) 1/2*

Jim Cornette cuts a promo basically hyping ROH on HDNet as the second coming. This is similar to his TNA Debut where he talks wanting to either hear how a wrestler can help ROH, or he wants to see them go out the backdoor. He also says that Austin Aries might not be happy with the new creative direction he has in store. He will make his television debut in two weeks.

ROH World Tag Team Championship Match: The Young Bucks vs. The American Wolves ©
Richards is already getting streamer treatment. Davey starts with a headlock, Nick shoves him off and eats a shoulder tackle, but hits a hip block takeover and a pair of armdrags. He keeps the armbar and the Jacksons go for their signature series of dives to the arm, and my computer is acting up. I apologize and I'll get the rest of the recap up as soon as I can.

I come back to Richards applying his Tequila Sunrise Cloverleaf, but Matt gets the ropes. Edwards tags in and Matt gets a series of forearms while Hog and Prazak debate whether Richards or Colt Cabana is the new best in the world. Eddie takes on Nick on the apron and the Wolves double team Matt. Richards hits a backdrop suplex but only gets two. Davey smashes Matt's head on Edwards' knee and tags out. Davey whips Eddie into a boot to the face, charges and gets backdropped to the apron, but Matt has them scouted because he ducks and Edwards eats Davey's enzugiri. Davey quickly covers his mistake with an enzugiri to Nick so Matt can't tag out. Nick pulls Davey to the floor, and Matt gets the tag!

Nick hits his slingshot facebuster on Edwards, goes out to the apron and hits Richards with a moonsault. That description doesn't do it justice because it was lighting fast and liquid smooth. Nick hits a crossbody on Eddie but only gets two. He hits a back elbow and a tornado DDT but only gets two. Nick misses a senton but rolls through, runs into a boot from Edwards, hits Edwards with a spinning kick and hits the ropes. Davey is in but Nick catches the Alarm Clock kick and ducks an enzugiri that clocks Eddie. Matt hits a spear on Eddie and the bucks hit the standing moonsault/springboard frog splash combo. The timing on that spot is incredible, but it only gets two.

Time for More Bang for Your Buck, but Richards knocks Nick from his perch and Eddie gets knees up on Matt's moonsault. Davey comes in and hits a running forearm in the corner, whips Matt and Eddie jumps off the second rope for a flying Codebreaker. That was sweet. LEAPING TOMBSTONE PILEDRIVER BY RICHARDS! Eddie covers but it only gets two. Riiiight… "This is awesome!" picks up. The Wolves want the Doomsday Device, INVERTED RANA BY MATT! Nick goes up to Edwards, FRANKENSTEINER TO A STANDING DAVEY! SHADES OF JERICHO! Eddie tosses Matt to the apron but eats a corner knee from Nick, and Nick dives onto Richards on the floor. FREAKING CORKSCREW ACE CRUSHER TO EDWARDS! 1…2…NO! MORE BANG FOR YOUR BUCK CONNECTS! 1…2…DAVEY BREAKS IT UP!

Davey and Nick trade forearms and Nick wins, but Davey gets the handspring enzugiri! Davey hits a running forearm on Matt, SUPERKICK by Matt, kick to the gut by Davey, another Superkick, Matt hits the ropes, Edwards is there, ALARM CLOCK! POWERBOMB LUNGBLOWER COMBINATION! 1…2…NO! HALF CRAB! Matt holds on and waits for Nick to make the save, Nick is in, springboard dropkick gets countered to a powerbomb by Davey, DR DRIVER! Matt has no choice but to tap! Can't give a rating since I didn't see the whole thing, but it looked about ****.
Winners: The American Wolves (via Half-Crab on Matt Jackson) [****]

Here's a link to the match, so maybe you'll have better luck.

I haven't watched an ROH match in a while, but I just saw Young Bucks/Wolves and it's awesome. Check it out.

Why not watch the whole thing before you review it?

Disregard that, I suck.

I dunno, Eddie Edwards not selling all those big double-team moves at the end of the match really hurt it, for me.
