411's ROH on HDNet Report 12.03.09: Cabana vs. Aries (11.30.09)
Posted by Aaron Hubbard on 12.03.2009
Plus the Briscoes versus the Dark City Fight Club and Castagnoli versus Kingston!
The show starts with video recaps of Kenny King and Rhett Titus injuring Jerry Lynn with a botched spike piledriver, and then Austin Aries injuring Tyler Black by setting a piece of paper on fire. You know, to inform the new viewers who might have missed that. Oh wait….
Mike Hogewood and Dave Prazak welcome us to the show. Hogewood is excited about Colt Cabana getting a chance to shut Austin Aries up.
Eddie Kingston comes out for his match. His music always gets stuck in my head. Chris Hero comes out and says that even if Kingston is trying to be more like Chris Hero, he will never be Chris Hero. Not quite the same impact as Shawn Michaels saying roughly the same thing to Chris Jericho, but whatever.
Eddie Kingston vs. Claudio Castagnoli
So, does this mean we might get a Kings of Wrestling reunion? Please? With a cherry on top? Claudio slaps Eddie with his glove. Not the best idea ever, CC. Kingston hits a flurry of slaps to the gut on Castagnoli but Claudio breaks that up with knees. Eddie gets an awesome counter to a hip block takeover with a double arm belly-to-belly. Eddie hits a couple of chops but Hero distracts him and CC hits another knee. Claudio takes control with a headlock but Eddie escapes and hits a back body drop. Kingston goes after Hero, but Castagnoli hits a boot and then abuses him with the barricade. CC hits a few knees to Kingston's face and a gutwrench suplex. He teases the Big Swing but opts for elbow drops instead, but Eddie beats him to the punch with a slap. Claudio takes control with a European Uppercut and then hits a fallaway slam into a Samoan Drop. It only gets two, so CC applies a half-nelson chinlock.
Eddie fights back with slaps and CC responds with European Uppercuts. Beautiful counter as Kingston catches Claudio going for the Bicycle kick and hits a capture suplex. He follows with a lariat for two. Kingston hits a running elbow in the corner and a Sambo Suplex for two. Hero distracts Eddie and Eddie runs into a boot. Claudio lifts up Kingston on his shoulders and hits the Pop-Up European. Kingston kicks out of that, so Claudio busts out the no-hands airplane spin, which is pretty impressive considering Eddie's, um, healthy build. Riccola Bomb attempt, SPIKE RANA by Kingston! 1…2…NO! Sliding elbow! 1…2…NO! Eddie gets a chair but the referee gets it out of the ring. Aha, a back up plan in the form of Chris Hero's elbow pad! LOADED BACKFIST TO THE FUTURE! That puts Claudio down for this match. Winner: Eddie Kingston (via loaded Backfist) **3/4
Kenny King says that he is learning from Austin Aries and basically promises to be a champion in the future.
The Dark City Fight Club vs. The Briscoe Brothers
What is this doing not in the main event? Jay grabs a headlock on Jon Davis but is unable to make him budge with shoulder blocks. Davis hits a big forearm, Briscoe tries a hip block takeover but Davis lifts him up in a fireman's carry, Jay escapes, dodges and weaves and hits a leaping heel kick. Jay hits a big chop but Davis levels him with a single shoulder block. Davis hits a scoop slam but misses a double foot stomp because Jay is too quick. Kory Chavis tags in and loses a forearm duel with Jay, misses a clothesline and Jay hits a big boot before Mark comes in with a crossbody for two. Even I didn't catch that blind tag. Chavis has a little more luck exchanging strikes with Mark, but Mark leaps over him and comes back with a spinning wheel kick. He knocks Davis off the apron and tags back out, and the Briscoes hit the double 3-Point Stance on Chavis. Jay wins a chop war with Chavis and tags out to Mark. He hits a Russian Legsweep and Mark hits a senton off the second rope for two.
Mark hits a flurry of strikes but runs into a huge elbow. Chavis tags out and Davis takes some strikes from Mark, Chavis lifts up Mark and then falls too early on the leg lariat Hart Attack they do. Davis makes me happy by NOT going for a cover and just pounding on Mark instead. Never mind, they go in there and redo the spot, and Chavis gets two. Don't redo a move directly after you botch it. Work it in later. The DCFC put the beatdown on Mark, Chavis hits a corner clothesline and they hit a backbreaker legdrop combination. Jay breaks up Davis' cover. The DCFC use rapid tags and flurries of punches to stay in control. Davis hits a back suplex and tags out to Chavis. Chavis whips Mark to the apron but Mark comes out with a forearm off the second turnbuckle. HOT TAG TO JAY!
Jay knocks Davis off the apron and hits a flurry of strikes and a dropkick on Chavis. He wants the Death Valley Driver but Chavis escapes only to be caught with a yakuza kick. Davis breaks up the cover and the DCFC beat Jay down. Davis whips Chavis for a corner clothesline but Jay saw it earlier and counters with a big boot. Davis runs into the reverse STO in the turnbuckle, and Jay throws Chavis to the floor. Cactus clothesline on Davis! Chavis joins in on the brawl and Mark hits a hilo on everyone. Everything devolves into a chaotic brawl and the match gets thrown out. Winners: Draw (match thrown-out) **1/2
The brawl continues for a bit and the locker room empties to separate the two teams. Good luck.
Kyle Durdan is in the back the ROH World Champion, Austin Aries. Tyler Black is supposed to be back next week, but Aries isn't worried about him. Tonight, he's focus on Cabana. He talks about Cabana being the first challenger he faced in his first reign as champion, and he proved himself to be a little quicker and a little smarter. Cabana likes to be a jokester, but Aries will slap the s, the t, the e, and the r right off and prove he is just a joke.
Next week, Jim Cornette will debut on the show.
Kevin Steen and El Generico vs. The Set
No idea who The Set is, but if they win, I will eat my hat. Skinny jobber dodges clotheslines from Steen and tags out. Fat jobber and Steen look they are about to have a sumo match. They settle for the game of brick walls and shoulder blocks. Steen wins by brain power and a spinning wheel kick. Generico comes in with a crossbody and gets two. Generico has read the wrestling rule book and hits a sunset flip on the fat jobber so that he will try to sit on him. He misses and Generico hits a dropkick to the back for two. Fat jobber hits the telegraph kick and an avalanche on Generico, and tags out to skinny jobber. Fat jobber uses skinny jobber as a battering ram, and skinny jobber rolls to send fat jobber crashing into Generico. Fat jobber catches skinny jobber in a wheelbarrow and lifts him up for a moonsault on Generico. Generico miraculously survives the force of eighty pounds and kicks out of it. Generico hits a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker on skinny jobber and tags in Steen.
Skinny jobber runs from Steen. Don't worry man, Steen won't you! You have no nutritional value! Fat jobber comes in and eats some forearms. He tries a backdrop and Steen waits for him to stand upright and drills him with a superkick. Skinny jobber tries a crossbody. ALPHA BOMB! Generico and Steen switch it up with Generico hitting the Swanton and Steen hitting the splash. Either way, SLAP THE PORPOISE! Winners: Kevin Steen and El Generico (via Swanton-Body Splash Combo) *
Colt Cabana vs. Austin Aries
Don't taste the rainbow, wear the rainbow. Aries takes control of chain wrestling early and sprawls over him just to assert his dominance. Cabana stays in control with a headlock until Aries hits an overhead armdrag. Aries works in the slingshot back elbow and Prazak talks about Who. Lansdell is marking. Awesome spot as Cabana rolls to his back and kicks Aries in the gut in a modification of the Shawn Michaels spot. Cabana hits a butt bump and tries the Billy Goat's Curse, but Aries avoids it. Cabana hits a pair of atomic drops and gets a freaky cover for two. Cabana stays in control with strikes that resemble a Three Stooges skit. Aries skins the cat from the middle rope but Cabana kicks him back to the floor. Cabana goes to the floor and Aries hits a Russian Legsweep into the ring post and drives him into the rail.
Aries stays on the neck with clubs on the apron and a knee strike. He goes inside and hits a slingshot axehandle to the neck for two. Aries applies a surfboard clutch, Cabana escapes it with a wristdrag but Austin kicks the back of his neck. He follows with a dropkick to the face for two. Austin stays on the neck but Colt avoids a fistdrop. He throws some punches but Aries hits an STO. He takes too long with the theatrics on the pendulum elbow and then switches to the powerdrive elbow, but Colt avoids it and unloads with a series of bionic elbows. Aries reverses an Irish Whip but Cabana hits the quebrada for two. Cabana wants the Flying Asshole but Aries counters with a crossbody. Cabana avoids a splash and hits a neckbreaker clothesline for two. Aries counters the Colt .45 with the shinbreaker suplex and tries the IED, but Cabana catches him on his shoulders. Cabana goes to second rope and then drops Aries on the turnbuckle.
Colt .45 connects but it only gets two. Cabana tries the Billy Goat's Curse but gets kicked the floor, HEAT SEEKING MISSLE! Brainbuster! But Cabana kicks out! Beautiful counter as Aries tries the kick to the head only to get caught in the Billy Goat's Curse! Kenny King comes out but Brent Albright stops him from interfering. But the distraction saves Aries because he taps out. Rhett Titus is down here and goes up top but Colt knocks him backdown, IED! Aries hits the kick to the head, LAST CHANCERY! Cabana has no choice but to tap out. Winner: Austin Aries (via Last Chancery) ***
He's awful and should have stayed gone from ROH. Him and Roderick keep getting title shots that EVERYONE knows means NOTHING.
What a waste.

This was just a good, solid wrestling show. I went from being unsure how I feel about Hogwood to really enjoying his work. I'm not a big Prazak fan as I think he's better suited as a heel manager. I'd have Hog & Good Ol' D.R. as the announcers.
Main event was damn good as they have great chemistry together. It reminded me of Dusty Rhodes v. Randy Savage, but much better.

Someone needs to put a stop to Austin Aries. I don't care who it is, but SOMEONE needs to take that title off of him because ROH is suffering as long as he's champ.
And Kent, Cabana and Roderick are a LOT more talented then you think they are. They BELONG in ROH because WWE would just waste their talent even worse. So your opinion is null and void.

Good Ol' D.R. Nice reference, Doc.
Hell son, he wrestled with Dick The God Damn Bruiser and Joe By God Blanchard back in 1970! He even wrestled a bear, and did he complain when the bear went over? HELL NO! He didn't know whether to shit or go blind, son!
Apologies to the 95% of you who won't get any of that.

I feel you on Kingston's music. Hell, just reading about it put it back in my head.
And did they have a mic on a seven year old during the Cabana/A Double match?
