411's WWE Smackdown Report 12.25.09
Posted by Joseph F. Martinez on 12.25.2009

12.25.09

> It's everyone's favorite Christmas tradition! WWE Smackdown...?

> Todd Grisham and Matt Striker introduce us to the card. A match between Rey Mysterio and The Undertaker for the World Title. Also on tap is a Unified Tag Team Title match between Degeneration X and The Hart Dynasty

> We are backstage at some kitchen thing with the wonderful Vickie Guerrero. She wishes us a wonderful Christmas day. What a sweet action by her! Teddy Long comes in with a bowl of egg nog and thanks Vickie for inviting him. Apparently Vickie is going to show us how to make a Christmas dinner. She puts potatoes in a pot and adds in a ton of butter. It had to be 20 or 25 sticks. She moves on to the turkey. Using "the magic of television," Vickie has a turkey ready for us! Guerrero brings out her stuffing, which Teddy Long says looks like dog food. They continue with the food preparation until Hornswoggle interjects himself into the scene. He ruins Vickie's perfect dinner. What a jerk. Long says Dinner has been served and we head on to some actual wrestling.

> R-Truth leads the face team of Matt Hardy, John Morrison and Fit Finlay. Sadly, we won't be seeing John Morrison's slow motion pyro this evening. CM Punk then leads the team of Luke Gallows (w/ Slammy Award), Drew McIntyre and Dolph Ziggler. Striker says Punk doesn't believe in Christmas. Schools should be open and people should be at work.

Match One
R-Truth, Matt Hardy, Finlay and John Morrison v. CM Punk, Luke Gallows, Dolph Ziggler and Drew McIntyre

Finlay and Dolph Ziggler start the match. They grapple with Ziggler taking Finlay into the corner. Finlay transitions his way into a headlock on Ziggler. Ziggler sends him to the ropes but Finlay replies with a shoulderblock. Quick body slam from Finlay to Ziggler is followed up by the Finlay Press. Finlay pins Ziggler and gets a two count.

Finlay wrenches the arm of Ziggler and brings him down with a clothesline. He tags in Truth who dances his way into the ring. He slaps Ziggler and whips him towards the ropes. Ziggler reverses the momentum but Truth counters into a quick pin for two. Both men get up and Truth tries to wrench the arm of Ziggler. Ziggler kicks Truth and brings him down with a fireman's carry. Pinfall gets one.

Ziggler brings Truth to the heel corner and tags in Punk. The Former World Heavyweight Champion comes in with a headbutt to the abdomen of R-Truth. Punk whips Truth but Truth comes back with an arm drag. Truth applies an arm wrench to CM Punk and tags in Matt Hardy. Hardy comes in with a bunch of punches to CM Punk. The ref pulls Matt off but Matt goes back with his clothesline-bulldog combination. Pinfall gets two.

Hardy lifts Punk and tries to send him to the corner. Punk reverses but Hardy puts up an elbow when he tries to take advantage. Hardy goes upstairs for his elbow but Punk strikes the stomach to counter. Punk kicks the downed Hardy and pins him. He pins him three different times with a one count being the result of each pin. Grisham sends us to a commercial break.

When we return, Luke Gallows has a bearhug locked in on Matt Hardy. Hardy tries to elbow his way out but Gallows takes him into the heel corner and tags in Drew McIntyre. McIntyre beats down Hardy in the corner and applies a choke with the boot. McIntyre lifts Hardy only to bring him down with a clothesline. McIntyre tags in Ziggler and holds Hardy as Ziggler kicks Hardy in the ribs. Ziggler pins Hardy and gets a two count. Ziggler points at the faces and runs towards Hardy with a snapmare. Ziggler pins Hardy but only gets one.

Ziggler wastes no time before locking his legs around Matt Hardy's stomach. Hardy throws some elbows and eventually gets to his feet. He punches Ziggler but Ziggler throws him down by the head. Ziggler tags in McIntyre who stomps on Hardy's head. McIntyre throws several headbutts and lifts Hardy over his head. Hardy slips out and takes McIntyre out with the Side Effect. Both men tag in partners. John Morrison attacks CM Punk with several punches. He sends Punk into the corner and brings him down with a clothesline. Morrison whips Punk against the ropes for his leg lariat but Punk tags in McIntyre.

Morrison attacks McIntyre before he can get in the ring. The ref pulls Morrison off which allows McIntyre to tag in Ziggler. Morrison kicks Ziggler and whips him for a successful leg lariat. He follows that up with a running knee to the face. Pinfall gets two before being broken up by Drew McIntyre. Finlay goes into the ring and attacks McIntyre with a rolling fireman's carry. CM Punk takes Finlay out with the GTS and R-Truth immediately kicks Punk in the face. Ziggler tries to attack Truth but he ducks and Matt Hardy attacks him with the Side Effect. Luke Gallows clotheslines both Truth and Hardy but gets taken out by a John Morrison springboard dropkick. John Morrison goes upstairs and comes down with Starship Pain on Dolph Ziggler to get the win for his team.

> Face team celebrates and we get shown highlights after the match.

> Graphic for Mysterio-Taker.

> Chris Jericho and his suit bring themselves to the ring. Jericho is disgusted at the show being billed as a DX Christmas. He calls Teddy Long incompetent and then goes into his conspiracy rant. He says he is the face of Smackdown and shouldn't be disrespected on his show. He wants to know why The Hart Dynasty are the number one contenders to the Unified Tag Team Titles. This prompts The Hart Dynasty to come out.

Jericho asks the three to calm down because he respects their roots. He says he trained the same way they did. He still remembers them as children and thinks of them the same way, as a bunch of punks. He asks them what they have ever done to deserve the title match and David Hart Smith says they don't run or complain. They take the problem head on. Tyson Kidd says they are better than the best. Jericho starts to berate them for being inexperienced but he gets cut off by Degeneration X's music.

DX address the guys in the ring from the titantron. Triple H says they're boring everyone to death. Shawn Michaels says they have gifts and they take some time to pimp their book. Chris Jericho's gift from DX is a "tickle-me Big Show," which happens to be a photoshop of The Big Show with Elmo fur. A fart joke transpires and then DX transitions into their present for the Hart Dynasty. HBK says he has a one way ticket back to Canada and then talks about the finer traits of the Great White North like bears.

Chris Jericho says if The Hart Dynasty want to prove themselves, they have to make an impact. He turns his back and addresses DX and when he turns his attention back to the Hart Dynasty, he walks into the Hart Attack.

> We're backstage with Mickie James. Michelle McCool and Layla say they want to apologize for their actions over the last couple of weeks. They let us know they have a present for her. Mickie opens it up and it's a Jenny Craig Gift Certificate. They tease her, say Merry Christmas and leave.

> Matt Striker and Todd Grisham talk about the TLC match between Batista and the Undertaker. Video promo after that has highlights of that match and last week's bout between Mysterio and Batista.

> And now we're backstage with Rey Mysterio prepping. Josh Matthews comes in and asks Rey what his chances are. Rey Mysterio wishes a Feliz Navidad to everyone in the WWE Universe. Mysterio says Christmas is the time of miracles and the people of Orlando could be in store for one tonight.

> It's first hour main event time. Tony Chimel gives us the special world title introductions after both men get in the ring. Sounds like some boos for Mysterio but couldn't really tell.

Match Two
Undertaker © v. Rey Mysterio
World Heavyweight Championship

The bell rings and Rey Mysterio avoids Taker early. He bounces off the ropes into an Undertaker right hand. Taker immediately throws Rey outside of the ring and sets him on the apron for his legdrop. Rey rolls out of the way of the drop and flies off the apron with a crossbody. Taker catches him and tries to send him into the steel pole but Mysterio squirms out of the way and sends Taker into it. Mysterio goes into the ring only to come out with a suicide dive that sends us to a commercial break.

Mysterio is kicking the Undertaker in the leg when we return. Taker catches one of the kicks and delivers an uppercut to Mysterio. Rey gets up and Taker takes him back down with a headbutt. The Undertaker lifts Rey and whips him into the ropes. Rey comes back with a boot to Taker's head but that only angers him. Taker tries an assault but Rey ducks causing Taker to go to the outside. Rey capitalizes with a baseball slide kick that stuns the Deadman. Mysterio leaps off the apron for a seated senton but the Undertaker catches him. Taker swings Mysterio's body against the outside barricade and returns to the ring to reset the count. Taker goes back to the outside and guides Mysterio's body towards the steel ring steps, where he slams Mysterio's head against it. Taker picks Mysterio up again and sends him inside the ring. Elbow drop. Taker picks Rey up and wrenches the arm. The Undertaker kicks Mysterio in the shoulder and wraps the arm around the ropes.
Taker again locks in an arm wrench. This time lifting Mysterio up. He sends Rey down and goes for the pinfall. Two count.

Rey crawls to the corner but Taker follows and stomps the downed Mysterio. The Deadman lifts Rey up and sends him down with a body slam. The Undertaker signals the end of the match is near and puts Rey in position for the Last Ride. Mysterio slips out of it and kicks the Undertaker. He goes to the apron and launches himself off the ropes headfirst into the Undertaker. Mysterio goes back to the apron and comes down with a springboard legdrop. He pins Taker and gets a two count.

Taker gets to his knees and Mysterio kicks him. Mysterio bounces off the ropes but Taker catches him by the throat. Mysterio forces the Undertaker to relinquish his grasp with a punch and Rey goes back to the ropes. He tries a springboard attack but the Undertaker meets him with a Big Boot. The Undertaker signals for the chokeslam. He lifts Rey up and it's successful. Batista enters the ring and hits the Undertaker for the DQ.

> They brawl after the match with the Undertaker being laid out by a Batista Spinebuster. Big Dave lifts Taker and tries the Batista Bomb but Taker counters. Rey Mysterio launches with a springboard dropkick that sends Taker into 619 position. Mysterio hits the 619 and prepares for the springboard splash. The Undertaker catches him by the throat but Batista spears the Undertaker. Batista tries to attack Rey Mysterio but Mysterio counters that into a drop toe hold followed up by a 619. Mysterio hits a seated senton on Batista and goes out of the ring.

> Promo for Raw's guest host. Timbaland. It can't be any worse than last Monday's Raw.

> We return from a commercial break to see highlights of the brawl between the Undertaker, Batista and Rey Mysterio.

> Tribute to the Troops highlight package follows that.

> We're backstage with Santa Slam Master J and Cryme Tyme. Santa J complains about overweight kids sitting on his lap and sore feet. Slam Master J says he hasn't given presents out so Shad boots J and steals his bag of toys while JTG steals the Santa suit.

EDIT: Apparently the person playing Santa Claus was FCW Wrestler, Heath Slater.

> Cryme Tyme come out with the bag of toys and give out WWE Gifts to the fans. In the ring are their opponents, Bryce Andrews and Pat Buck, two local guys.

Match Three
Cryme Tyme v. Bryce Andrews and Pat Buck

JTG and Bryce Andrews start the match off. JTG latches on a headlock to Andrews. Andrews punches JTG off and misses a clothesline. JTG punches Andrews in the face and slams his head against the corner. JTG whips Andrews towards the ropes and flips him to the ground. JTG whips Andrews to the ropes and Andrews rebounds with a boot to JTG's face. Andrews tags in Pat Buck and JTG kicks him in the stomach. Buck whips JTG towards the ropes but JTG holds on and tags in Shad. Gaspard comes in with several clotheslines to Buck. He eliminates Andrews and whips Buck against the ropes. On the rebound, he slams Buck to the ground. Gaspard delivers an elbow drop to Pat Buck and Bryce Andrews gets involved. Shad lifts Andrews over his head and tosses him out of the ring. Shad tags in JTG and lifts Buck for the G-9 which gets Cryme Tyme the win.

> Cryme Tyme give more gifts out to the fans after the match.

> Vickie and Teddy argue about Hornswoggle being in attendance. Vickie apologizes for Hornwsoggle's interference and gets back to teaching us about creating a solid holiday dinner. She calls Apple Pie a Mexican Dish. Hornswoggle sneaks in unbeknownst to Vickie and asks for a pie from Teddy Long. Long gets her attention and she turns her back into Hornswoggle throwing the pie in her face. Long says something corny about dessert and Hornswoggle launches a pie into Long's face.

> We're back with Matt Striker and Todd Grisham, who are joined by the Women's Champion, Michelle McCool. Mickie James is out first and Maria is her tag partner. She's out with her Slammy. Layla and Beth Phoenix are their opponents.

Match Four
Mickie James and Maria v. Beth Phoenix and Layla

Maria and Layla start the match. Maria shoves Layla to the ground. Layla tries an attack but it gets met by a Maria arm drag. Maria nails a couple of dropkicks and sends Layla into the corner. She meets her with a hipblock and then chokes her with her boot. Maria tries to whip Layla into the ropes but Layla reverses the momentum. Layla tries to take Maria down but Maria stands her ground. Maria knees Layla but gets kicked in the head shortly after. Layla pins Maria and gets a two count from Charles Robinson.

Layla tags in Beth Phoenix and she attacks Maria immediately. Phoenix sends Maria into the corner and chokes her down. She then places her knee in Maria's face. Beth Phoenix climbs the turnbuckle and comes down with a body strike. Beth Phoenix places a knee to the back of Maria's head and Layla tags herself in. Layla El kicks Maria in the back and takes her down with a snapmare. She follows that up with a dropkick to the back. Layla locks in what Matt Striker calls a modified dragon sleeper until Maria gets to her feet. Layla immediately knocks her down with a clothesline but misses an elbow drop.

Maria tags in Mickie James and James comes in with a Thesz Press. James slams Layla's head against the mat and then nails her in the head with some knees. James lifts Layla and takes her back down by the head. Beth Phoenix distracts James and Layla attempts a kick. Mickie ducks and nails Layla with a boot to the head for the win.

> After the match, Mickie James chases after Michelle McCool. Beth Phoenix attacks her from behind and takes out Maria as well. James gets to her feet and the two trade blows until Phoenix throws James into the announce table. McCool taunts James after and leaves, but not before getting a vicious glare from The Glamazon.

> Both teams make their entrance and we get the nice Unified Tag Team Championship graphic for the main event.

Match Five
Degeneration X © v. The Hart Dynasty
Unified Tag Team Championship Match

Tyson Kidd and Shawn Michaels start the match off. They grapple with HBK getting Kidd in a headlock. Kidd sends Michaels against the ropes and HBK replies with a shoulderblock. HBK gets sent to the ground with an arm drag but gets up and delivers an arm drag of his own. Kidd kicks HBK in the groin and launches himself for a dropkick. HBK avoids and turns it into a catapult. Tag made to HHH. HHH delivers a stalling vertical suplex to Tyson Kidd that lasts for a good 30 seconds. HHH goes for the early pin but only gets two.

HHH whips Kidd into a corner and then casually throws a punch. HHH sends Kidd into the opposite corner but his attack gets cut off by a Tyson Kidd boot. Tyson Kidd climbs the turnbuckle for an ax hammer but HHH kicks him and sets him up for the Pedigree. David Hart Smith interrupts with a clothesline and Kidd tags him in to send us to a break.

We return to see Tyson Kidd choking HHH from the outside. David Hart Smith knees Helmsley in the stomach and then lifts him up for a stalling vertical suplex of his own. DH Smith pins HHH for 2. After the pin, Smith clubs HHH's head with big blows. Smith locks in a chinlock. HHH gets to his feet but Smith takes him to the heel corner. Smith delivers a few shots to the head before distracting the ref, allowing Kidd to choke The Game. HHH punches Smith in the head but Smith holds on to the foot to prevent a tag. Smith tags in Kidd who flies off the ropes and into a Triple H clothesline. HHH makes the tag and HBK comes in with several blows to the head. Kidd sends HBK into the ropes but HBK fires back with a lariat. Kip up into a knife edge chop. Michaels body slams Kidd to the ground and climbs the turnbuckle. DH Smith tries to interfere but he runs into Shawn Michaels' boot. HBK comes down with his elbow drop but Natalya assists Kidd out of the way. Kidd
takes HBK out with a springboard blockbuster. Pinfall gets a two.

Kidd slams Michaels' head against the turnbuckle and tags in DH Smith. Smith comes in with a boot to HBK's side. He launches a blow to HBK's head but HBK takes him to the corner for a knife edge chop. DH Smith quickly whips HBK into the opposite turnbuckle and Michaels flips out of the ring. DH Smith sends HBK's back into the ring apron two times before going back inside the ring. The referee turns his back on Natalya and she slaps Shawn Michaels. HBK slaps the chest of Kidd with a chop but Kidd fires back with a punch and a spinning wheel kick. Pinfall gets two when HBK puts his foot on the rope. Kidd tags in Smith and the two lift HBK for a suplex. Kidd relinquishes his hold but Smith keeps HBK up for a few seconds longer. Pin gets two.

Smith punches HBK in the head and then wrenches HBK's arm and neck. Michaels gets to his feet and delivers several chops to Smith's chest. He goes for another one but Smith ducks and delivers a huge Saito Suplex. Resulting pinfall gets two. Smith kicks the downed HBK and lifts him up for an uppercut. He tags in Tyson Kidd and they send HBK's back into the turnbuckle. Kidd quickly drops a knee on Michaels' head and then pins him for two.

Kidd wastes no time and locks his arms around the head of HBK. Michaels slowly reaches towards HHH for the tag but Smith holds him for a few seconds. Shawn Michaels punches Kidd off. Kidd tries a side headlock but Michaels sends him into the ropes. Kidd bounces back and both men collide to the ground. Kidd tries a springboard assault but Michaels catches him for an atomic drop.

Both men tag in their partners and HHH gets the momentum early. Smith ducks an HHH clothesline but gets nailed by a high knee. Smith sends HHH into the ropes but HHH sends Smith's head against his knee on the rebound. Triple H punches Kidd and then delivers a Spinebuster to David Hart Smith. Pinfall gets a two count. Kidd tries to mount some offense but HHH takes him out with a spinebuster. Triple H measures David Hart Smith for the Pedigree but Smith counters into bearhug hold. Kidd comes in with a Springboard Lariat to complete the Hart Attack. Smith goes for the pin but HBK breaks it up after two. Kidd sends HBK out of the ring with a clothesline and then launches himself for a dive that HBK avoids. David Hart Smith lifts HHH for a powerslam but HHH squirms out. David Hart Smith tries to send HHH into the corner but he's met with Sweet Chin Music from the outside. HHH nails the Pedigree and DX wins.

> DX celebrates for a bit and then Hornswoggle's music plays. The three put on Santa hats and HBK gets on the mic. He says Hornswoggle has two words for us and those two words happen to be Merry Christmas. They do the crotch chop and the show ends with DX celebrating.

I forgot this was even on today, then I read this report, and I don't even care that I didn't see it.

I would not care if someone killed Hornswoggle it would actually please me.

Wow both title matches were awesome and the 8 man tag team match was great as well.

Even the women's match was decent.

Merry Christmas indeed.

Joseph, Rey-Taker was a match on Smackdown in the tournament to determine Brock Lesnar's number one contender after he won at Wrestlemania XIX. Taker won with a hellacious Last Ride.

Posted By: Mike (Guest)  on December 25, 2009 at 10:39 PM

IIRC, Taker and Mysterio did actually meet one-on-one once before, in a #1 Contender tournament.

Actually, Rey Mysterio and Undertaker have wrestled one on one before, in a tournament in 2003. Right after Wrestlemania. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMzo9PzKpEs

just a suggestion, you can try to inject some life into your reports with some opinion... even just if you thought the match was good!

Don't really need to read about every snapmare and irish-whip

Fat jokes on Mickie need to stop. Layla El is lookin SOOOO much better as a wrestler. That kick was nice. They need to turn Beth face, put the title on her and give us the match of all matches: Beth vs. Natalya.

Posted By: CL1 (Guest)  on December 25, 2009 at 11:49 PM

Uh, Undertaker vs Mysterio happened in 2003.

If you're not bothered to check your facts, why should we bother to read your tripe?

Santa wasn't Slam Master J. He had red hair, tattoos and a southern accent.

It was FCW wrestler Heath Slater

OK...so Michelle McCool is not only making fun of Mickie's weight, but also alluded to Maria being too skinny. WTF?! So what kind of female body is the most desirable according to this logic? Nevertheless, Beth Phoenix's involvement made it more interesting.

Posted By: Guest#9693 (Guest)  on December 26, 2009 at 07:35 AM

Never thought I'd say this but wow McCool has kind of improved on the mic and in her personality. She was so wooden last year, so it's good to see her making progress in this area.

People have been asking similar things for months (star ratings) but no changes yet. I've found myself not even bothering to read these anymore because there's nothing interesting or unique about this report over any of the others out there.

This is the Matt Hardy of reports.

An OK show. The main event was good, but nothing great. Rey v. Undertaker, on the other hand, WAS great but was the ruined by the finish. I don't mind screwjobs, but this was a match where I wanted to see a clean finish, or at least a few more minutes before the finish.

This is the overweight, balding, devoid of charisma and talent and forever in brother Jeff's shadow of reports?

Solid show tonight. Loved the main event!

This is unreadable. Pick a new format and put the winner in bold following the matches. Your Smackdown reports are absolute dog crap.

Unlike the rest of the people on here, I appreciate that you took time out of your schedule to do this. Thank You.

McCool's tone of voice sounds the same all the time, whether she's being serious, calm, or making jokes, just like Tiffany on ECW. I don't know what can be done about it because you either have charisma or you don't. Charisma is natural, not learned.

Dumb backstage Vickie/midget segments aside, really great Smackdown. Chock full of high quality wrestling (save Maria, who has absolutely no business ever entering a wrestling ring).

Two requests

1) To Mr. Martinez, a bare minimum of analysis would make these reports actually worth reading.

2) to the WWE, have the Glamazon beat the crap out of more divas more often, out of her disdain for their meager wrestling skills. I want bodies laid waste in and out of the ring, please.

Oh, and Nattie should be the mouthpiece for the Harts.

why can't you rate matches? it would take you 10 seconds extra and make a lot of readers happy.

not doing it is just plain disrespectful to your readers

What a surpise, once DX get the titles they end up in the main event over the world title.

The title of the column is "411's WWE Smackdown Report" not "411's Smackdown WWE Review"... unless one is a total nimrod, the title says what you are getting.

Give a hoot. Don't be a douche.

In all fairness to the reviewer, it was WWE that promoted the Rey-Undertaker match as the first time they'd ever faced each other.

Thanks for the report, Joseph. You do good work! And ignore any a-hole who nitpicks about something as stupid as Taker/Mysterio fighting 6 years ago.

Anyone that didn't see the Batista run-in coming from last week hasn't been watching wrestling very long, or should at least tell people that.

Decent show, aside from having DX (while not wrestling) and a dwarf on the show.

And I like the tweener angle they're building to with Beth Phoenix. She needs to be like the chick Undertaker, or something. She don't care who you are, she'll whoop your ass.

OK WWE needs to put Matt Hardy and Mickie James together. Seriously, they could be called Fatt Hardy and Thickie James. "Fatt and Thickie" It could be Dusty and Sapphire all over again!! lol

this actually wasn't the first time Taker and Rey had a match. They also had a match on Smackdown i believe sometime in 03-04
