411’s WWE Smackdown Report 03.12.10

March 12, 2010 | Posted by Michael Uphoff

At the beginning of the show, we get a preview of Edge being Jericho’s guest on the Highlight Reel as the main event of Smackdown.

Matt Striker and Todd Grisham are your hosts. Tonight, Smackdown comes from Seattle, Washington.

Out comes Rey Mysterio to the ring and he brings his family with him. Striker mentions that Dominic has been in the WWE before. Nice catch Striker. Rey says, “What’s up Seattle?” I’m waiting for R-Truth to come out and sue him for gimmick infringement. Rey says that each and every week the WWE Universe lets him into their homes, so this week he is going to let them into his home. He considers the WWE Universe part of his familia. He introduces his son Dominic as being taller than him, his daughter Aaliyah (I don’t know how it’s spelled, so I’ll go with this), and his wife Angie. He says that the WWE travels all around the world to entertain the WWE Universe, and sometimes the superstars miss important moments in their lives. As a parent, Rey knows that parents would do anything to make their kids feel special. Tonight is Rey’s daughter’s ninth birthday. The crowd starts a Happy Birthday chant. I could almost cry. Rey wants the WWE Universe to make this a night that she will always remember. Rey asks if everyone is ready to sing Happy Birthday. They get about halfway through when CM Punk’s music hits. Punk is out with Luke Gallows and Serena. God, she has a nice rack.

Punk implores the crowd not to stop singing on account of him. Punk finishes the rest of the song sarcastically. This is great. Punk says Rey looks scared, but he’s not out here to hurt Rey, or to hurt his family. Punk says that today is a big day and that we all need to celebrate the occasion. He also says that it doesn’t get any bigger than Wrestlemania, and that is why he wants to challenge Rey to a match at Wrestlemania. He also wants a match tonight. He doesn’t mean later in the show, but now. Like right now. Rey says, “Come on, Punk, this isn’t the time.” Punk says that as his birthday present, he’ll let Rey’s daughter shut her eyes as he reduces her daddy to tears and make him beg for my mercy. Punk says Dominic is all grown up, but he’s never heard his father squeal like a pig when someone was stomping on his surgically repaired knees, so it’s ok if Dominic plugs his ears. Punk says that Angie and Rey have shared the best of times in the past, but when he is done doing to Rey what he is going to do, it will be the worst of times. DICKENS FTW! Punk says feel free to cup your hands over your mouth to muffle the screams. Punk says,” What’s the matter Rey? You don’t want to fight me in front of your family now? Are you afraid that your family is going to watch you get hurt?” Punk calls Rey a coward. Dominic knows it, Angie has always known it, and now, on her ninth birthday, his daughter knows it. Everyone here knows that Rey is a coward. Punk asks,” Where is giant-killer Rey Mysterio at?” Crowd chants 619. Punk asks,” Where’s your 619, Rey? Where’s the ultimate underdog? Where’s your machismo, Rey?” Rey tells him to get back from his family. Punk says Rey never had any machismo or courage. Punk says he’ll even get down on Rey’s level and gets down on his knees. Punk slaps Rey after he says,” Not now.” Rey exits the ring after his family as Punk says to the crowd,” There’s your superhero, everyone! Watch him take his walk of shame!” Punk then sarcastically sings Happy Birthday again. – That was EPIC from Punk. A great promo to build to a match that could potentially be sleeper of the night at Wrestlemania.

Striker and Grisham really help to sell the angle by giving us their thoughts on what just happened.

The Miz w/ Daniel Bryan vs. R-Truth w/ David Otunga

Highlights are shown of the beatdown that Morrison and R-Truth laid down on Show-Miz on Monday Night Raw. The Miz says that Morrison and R-Truth think that they can come to Monday Night RAW and embarrass the last truly great tag team. Really? They think that they will go to Wrestlemania XXVI and win our tag team championships? REALLY? The Miz asks the crowd if they think that they can beat Show-Miz. The crowd says yes. Really? Really? The Miz says tonight that the Big Show is going to show Morrison what he can do and that right now, the Miz is going to show R-Truth what he can do and together at Wrestlemania, they will prove that they are the most dominant force in sports entertainment, because they’re Show-Miz, and they’re AWESOME! R-Truth comes out and does his usual stuff. Even though he keeps doing it, I love it. It always gets the crowd involved.

The bell rings, and Miz clubs R-Truth in the back with some forearms. He then slams R-Truth’s head into the top turnbuckle. Corner punches and knees from Miz, and an Irish whip which Truth counters and cartwheels away. R-Truth ducks under a clothesline and hits a leg lariat, and then follows that up with a clothesline to the floor. R-Truth then hits a plancha to the Miz!

Back from commercial, the Miz has R-Truth grounded in a headlock, and R-Truth fights to his feet then back suplexes out of the hold. Nice counter. Miz lays some lefts on Truth, who responds with a right. They get to their feet, the Miz misses a few punches and R-Truth lands some of his own. R-Truth with a nice deep armdrag and a clothesline. Another clothesline follows, and Miz is Irish whipped off the ropes. The Miz counters, but eats a big boot from Truth for 2! Truth goes for a powerslam attempt, but the Miz hits his knee/neckbreaker combo for a long 2! Miz goes for the Skull-Crushing Finale, but R-Truth counters and goes for a Pat O’Connor roll off the ropes! 1…2…Miz reverses! 1…2…NO! Miz ducks the Ax Kick, rolls up R-Truth with his feet on the ropes! 1…2…NO! Daniel Bryan shoves them off! He just shrugs his shoulders and says, “What? I didn’t do anything.” R-Truth ducks under a clothesline, comes off the ropes, and hits the Lie Detector! 1…2…3! Otunga raises R-Truth’s hand while Daniel Bryan looks on and shakes his head.

Winner: R-Truth pins the Miz after the Lie Detector- Good match. Good build, both toward Wrestlemania, and also to build more tension between the Miz and Daniel Bryan. **1/2

Grisham informs us that for the first time in two years, Chris Jericho’s Highlight Reel returns with the special guest Edge. What does Jericho have in store for Edge, indeed?

For some reason, they decide to show people throwing fish to each other in a Farmer’s Market. Have no idea why.

The Undertaker streak video to Johnny Cash is EPIC. The Superstars add their thoughts on the match and the streak and make it even better.

Grisham shills Wrestlemania and says that Taker/HBK is the ultimate streak vs. the ultimate career. Grisham has also never seen John Cena this enraged as he pimps the Cena vs. Batista II match at Wrestlemania. Striker does a good job with putting over Cena/Batista. They also shill Bret/Vince at Mania, along with Sheamus/Triple H. They also shill Jericho vs. Edge for the World Heavyweight Championship.

Drew McIntyre walks backstage and is stopped by Theodore Long, who says that he lost both of his Money in the Bank qualifying matches, only to have Vince McMahon expunge and eradicate his losses. Now he’s here a third time, trying to qualify for MITB. Okaaayyy…WHY? Drew says that he is proud that he is the undefeated Intercontinental Champion and that tonight, he will qualify for the MITB match. Teddy says that he must be proud that Vince handpicked his opponent for tonight, and Drew says that he’s your boss. Teddy agrees, and says while he’s still on probation, he still runs the show and while he can’t change the match, he can make it a winner-take-all match in which the winner gets the MITB spot, and the Intercontinental Championship. He wishes Drew good luck and walks off, and that match is next.

DID YOU KNOW…that fans from all 50 states and 24 countries have purchased tickets to Wrestlemania?
DID YOU KNOW…that I can see all the PPV’s for free, Vince? Apparently Kane has a match tonight against Luke Gallows.

WINNER-TAKE-ALL MATCH: Drew McIntyre (c) vs. Aaron Bolo

I wonder who wins. The bell rings, and Drew knees the kid in the gut, and lands some forearms to his back. Drew just throws him into the corner, and then lays some corner lariats on the kid. Short-arm lariat takes the kid down. FUTURE SHOCK! 1…2…3! Matt Striker and Drew McIntyre seem to be the only ones that care who won.

Drew McIntyre retains the IC title and qualifies for MITB- I can’t rate this very high at all. ¼*

In the back, Big Show walks. His match with John Morrison is next.

The Big Show vs. John Morrison

Big Show is out first. John Morrison enters in the awesome slow-motion entrance that he does. The bell rings, and Show talks some trash. Morrison with a kick to the gut and some rights, but Show just shoves him off and off the ropes, Morrison ducks a right, and lands a kick and some more punches, and goes off the ropes again, but Show hits a running shoulderblock on him. Ouch. Show picks him up and headbutts him and then talks more trash. Show tosses Morrison into the corner and does that chop of his that hurts like hell. Show flings Morrison across the ring. Show taunts Morrison to get up and fight, and Morrison lands a couple punches, but Show just headbutts him again. “Stay down!”- Show. Show steps on Morrison’s chest and walks over him, then lands another right to the ribs, then follows that up with a chop to the chest. Show has a headlock locked in, which wouldn’t be that much, but it’s SHOW that has it locked in. Morrison tries to fight out and makes it to the ropes. Show boots Morrison in the face, and he rolls out of the ring. Show picks Morrison up off the floor and over the ropes, back into the ring. That’s impressive. Morrison with a kick to the side of Show’s head and lands some more blows, but Show shrugs him away while still selling that kick to the head. Show charges to the corner, but Morrison counters with a boot. Show charges again, but this time Morrison dropkicks the knee of Show! Show goozles Morrison, but Morrison lands on the apron! Enzuigiri to Show! Missile Dropkick! 1…2…Show powers out. Shining Wizard by Morrison! 1…2…NO! Show rolls the shoulder! Nice to see him selling the head. CHUCK KICK by Morrison countered into the KO punch by the Big Show! 1…2…3!

Big Show pins Morrison via KO punch- Good for what it was. Nice big man, little man match with some innovative stuff. Matches like this and the R-Truth/Miz match earlier give me high hopes for Wrestlemania. **

Preview again of the Highlight Reel with special guest Edge.

A commercial is shown shilling the Shawn Michaels: My Journey DVD.

Defining Divas on the WWE Homepage are shown and pimped by Grisham and Striker.

Teddy Long and Tiffany are in the back. They talk about Tiffany being on Smackdown and competing with the Smackdown Divas and Mickie’s injury. For those who do not know, the reason why Mickie dropped the title was she had a severe staph infection in her knee that required surgery. Vickie Guerrero stops in to say hello and makes a match between Tiffany and Michelle McCool. Yay.

The Hart Dynasty w/ Nattie Neidhart vs. Cryme Tyme

Cryme Tyme is over in Seattle. JTG and Tyson Kidd start. The bell rings, and Kidd lands a kick to the gut and some rights. Irish whip by Kidd, but JTG lands a right of his own. Dropkick by JTG is followed by an Irish whip to the turnbuckle which is countered by Kidd, and then JTG, and then Kidd hits a chop block on the knee of JTG. Kidd then slams the injured knee into the ring post twice. Back in the ring, Kidd works over the knee some more, and then locks in a single leg Boston Crab! Nice. The Undertaker’s gong sounds and the lights go out. The lights come back on, and Taker is in the ring! He lays waste to everyone! Big boot to Kidd, and then punches down Smith! Chokeslam to Shad! Last Ride to Kidd! Tombstone to David Hart Smith! HELL’S GATE to JTG! Undertaker destroys everyone!

No Contest- Undertaker lays everyone out- No real match, although it shows that Taker will do anything to keep his streak. ½*

A commercial shows NXT rookie Daniel Bryan and the Miz not getting along and Daniel Bryan must prove that he is awesome. He already is.

RAW Rebound shows the awesome promo that Batista cut on Cena and destroyed him with. It also shows the Handicap Gauntlet match on RAW where Batista destroyed Cena again.

RAW’s next guest host is Stone Cold Steve Austin! Wrestlemania Rewind matches are also happening on RAW.

Michelle McCool (c) vs. Tiffany

Michelle yawns as Tiffany makes her way to the ring. My thoughts exactly about this. Michelle shoves Tiffany after talking trash, and then does some pushups to mock her. Tiffany hits an inverted atomic drop on McCool and follows that up with a pair of clotheslines. Basement dropkick by Tiffany, and then a boot sends McCool out of the ring. Tiffany goes after McCool outside the ring and attacks her with rights, elbows, etc. She tries to whip McCool back into the ring, but McCool blocks, and Vickie charges and runs over Tiffany for the DQ. McCool knees her in the face, rolls her into the ring and goes to work on her in the corner. Beth Phoenix runs down for the save. She makes nice with Vickie and then takes her down! – This wasn’t half bad until the DQ. *1/4

DID YOU KNOW…WWE Magazine is the #1 sports magazine sold in Wal-Mart. Who cares?

Kane is in the back walking for his match, and that is next.

Luke Gallows vs. Kane
Gallows comes out with Punk and Serena. Kane comes out to his music and pyro. The bell rings, and they lock up. Kane grabs a side headlock and gets shoved off onto the ropes, but he comes back with a shoulderblock and gets a quick cover for nothing. Side headlock again by Kane to Gallows, who backs Kane into a corner and lands some rights on Kane. Luke with a kick to the gut, and Irish whips Kane across the ring, but Kane EXPLODES out of the corner with a clothesline to Gallows. Kane with some corner rights, then a kick to the gut, and some more rights, Irish whip by Kane, Gallows ducks under a clothesline, and comes off the ropes with a high shoulderblock! Impressive agility. Gallows lays the boots to Kane, but misses an elbow. Basement dropkick by Kane! Kane calls for the chokeslam, but Gallows bails to the outside. Commercial.

Back inside, Gallows suplexes Kane for a two count. Gallows with a headlock on Kane, Kane fights out, Irish whip by Gallows who hits a clothesline followed by a big splash for 2. More rights by Gallows, followed by another headlock. Kane fights out, but Gallows knees him in the gut. Right by Gallows, off the ropes and big boot by Kane! Huge uppercut by Kane followed by an Irish whip/corner clothesline combo. Sidewalk slam by Kane connects and gets 2. Kane goes up top and hits the flying clothesline! Gallows hits a back elbow when Kane goes for the goozles, and Gallows hits a short-arm lariat for 2. Irish whip countered by Kane into a goozle! Chokeslam connects! Here comes Punk for the DQ. Punk wails on Kane and then hits the GTS on Kane! Mysterio’s music hits as he slowly walks to the ring. Mysterio goes right after Punk and brawls with him! Referees separate them and Punk bails.- Ok match for what it was. *1/2

Up next is the Highlight Reel, with Edge as the special guest.

THE HIGHLIGHT REEL

Chris Jericho is introduced as he comes out to the ring to a chorus of boos to host the Highlight Reel. Edge comes out almost immediately to a huge amount of cheers. A “Spear” chant is started by the crowd. Jericho asks if something is funny to Edge right now. Edge says actually there is. Edge says you have this show called the Highlight Reel, yet it seems that the only highlight that keeps happening between the two of them is Edge keeps hitting Jericho with this move. It’s this move that I do, and I can’t really remember the name of it. “What’s the name of that move again?” Edge asks. Jericho says that’s actually quite humorous, the fact that Edge has all these sheep chanting for you at your whim. Mindless drones at the drop of a dime chanting spear, spear, spear. But that’s fantasy. Jericho only deals in reality. He’s an honest man and always tells the truth. The truth is that they could have been one of the greatest tag teams ever, but Edge had to go and selfishly injure himself. Jericho says that’s always what happens, you get to the cusp of greatness, and then you get injured. Neck injuries, shoulder injuries, leg injuries. Jericho points out the fact that when he was stealing the show at Wrestlemania XIX with HBK here in Seattle, Edge was at home injured missing that Wrestlemania and the next one. “How many days, months, and years have you missed due to injury, Edge? Do you know what I was doing when you were injured”- Jericho. “Losing”- Edge. Edge points out that he lost to HBK at XIX and Christian at XX. Jericho says that he was doing something Edge could never do, and that was forging an unparalleled Hall of Fame career as the greatest performer of his generation, and was doing it injury-free. Edge says he’s been injured in the past because he only knows how to do this business one way. He takes risks. He’s dived off twenty-foot ladders, jumped face-first into flaming tables, landed in thumbtacks. He faces adversity without fear and has no regrets. At Wrestlemania, Edge says he’ll take whatever risk he has to take to take back his World Heavyweight Championship. Jericho says he’s already taken risks, like choosing to face him at Wrestlemania. Bad things happen when you get in the ring with me, Edge. Jericho says that Edge is a fraud. He’s never known success or succeeded in anything on his own. Jericho says the best he’s ever done was when he was with Vickie Guerrero. “Touché”- Edge. He says that everyone has a girlfriend that they regret. For him, it was Vickie. For Jericho, it was the Big Show. That was great. Edge says that he takes risks and that he will beat Jericho at Wrestlemania. Jericho says that Edge should have stayed away from him. Bad things happen when you are around me, Edge. Jericho congratulates Edge for winning the Rumble. Jericho says that he doesn’t think Edge is fully healed. He says that everyone wants to see him with the title and confetti falling down at the end of Wrestlemania, but that’s not going to happen. Jericho will beat Edge, and then hurt him and send him home for more than six months. Edge says at Wrestlemania he will make Jericho an ex-World Heavyweight Champion and he will do it when he hits him with a spear. Jericho hits Edge with a mic to the head, a stool shot to the gut and back. He tries to throw Edge into the Highlight Reel TV, but Edge blocks and hits the Edgecution DDT! Edge sets for the spear and goes for it, but Jericho blasts him with the belt! Jericho stands tall over Edge chanting spear as the show ends.

Good show all around, matches left something to be desired, but the build saved the show. Great build for Wrestlemania. That’s all for me fans. I’ll be back next week. Peace and love.
