411's WWE NXT Report 3.16.10
Posted by Michael Bauer on 03.16.2010

Hello and welcome to the WWE NXT Report. As always, I am Michael Bauer, your NXT recapper.

Very interesting now that NXT now charts the rookie's record during their entrances.

Backstage, Matt Striker announces that the first round of votes will be announced in two weeks and somebody will be sent home. We don't know how many people will go though.

Darren Young and CM Punk (with the Straight Edge Society) vs. Matt Hardy and Justin Gabriel

Young opens with Gabriel and they lock up with Young getting headlock, being whipped off the ropes, and hitting a shoulder block. Young gets an arm wrench, but it is reversed but Gabriel. Young with a punch to the head and a whip, but Gabriel slips under and hits an arm drag, tagging in Hardy. Hardy whips Young across and Gabriel hits Poetry in Motion. Hardy hits a clothesline and gets two. Gabriel tagged in and gets a roll up for two, but Young hits a knee to the gut and pounds way in the corner before tagging in Punk. Punk hits a series of knees and punches in the corner, forcing the ref to get in the way. Young tagged back in and he continues to pound in the corner. Young whips Gabriel and he flips over Yong before hitting almost a Pele kick. Gabriel sends Young to the corner and Gabriel gets backdropped to the apron. Gabriel with a springboard cross body, but Young ducks and gets a two count. Young backs Gabriel in the corner and pounds away. Young reverses Gabriel's reverse of a whip and Gabriel handsprings onto Young's shoulders, but Young throws him off and hits a kick to the gut. Gabriel rolls to the floor and Punk slams him into the steps as Young distracts the ref. We go to commercial as Gabriel tries to regain his bearings.

Back from the break and Gabriel has for a standing splash, but Punk gets the knees up. Punk gets a two count and just pounds the rookie. Punk hits a double stomp and gets another two count. Young gets tagged in and Punk holds Gabriel so Young can run in for a forearm smash. Young talks trash and Gabriel hits a series of stiff kicks and follows with elbow strikes. Gabriel hits a snapmare and gets Young down with almost a Rock-Bottom type move. Gabriel goes up top for a 450 splash, but Young rolls out of the way. Punk gets tagged in and nearly gets the three count. Punk locks in a body scissors and Justin fights out with elbows and gets a jack-knife for a two count. Punk blocks Gabriel from a tag and then knocks Matt Hardy to the floor. Young tagged in and he gets another nearfall after driving Gabriel to the mat. Young drives Gabriel to the corner and tags in Punk. Gabriel fights of Punk for a moment, but gets sent to the ropes and Punk drives a knee to the gut. Punk goes to the apron for a springboard and Gabriel hits a dropkick out of nowhere. Gabriel finally tags in Matt Hardy. Hardy with a series of clothesline on Punk and gets a two count after a bulldog from the corner. Hardy hits the Side Effect for a two count. Hardy heads to the second rope, but Punk rolls away to tag in Young. Hardy throws Young into the ring and hits a neckbreaker for two. Hardy has his whip reversed and Young clotheslines both Matt and himself to the floor. Gallows takes advantage of the ref being distracted and decks Gabriel. He tries to deck Hardy, but Hardy ducks and hits the Side Effect on Gallows. Both men back in and the ref is now distracted with Gallows and Punk rolls in to nail Hardy with the Go2Sleep! Young falls on top of Hardy to get the three count.

After the bell, Gallows clotheslines Gabriel and boots Hardy in the face. Punk slaps hands with Young and Gallows boots him in the gut. Luke then almost kills the rookie with the Gallows Pole. So much for them looking like a real unit.

Winners: Darren Young and CM Punk

We find out The Miz has arranged Daniel Bryan to take on The Great Khali… next. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't The Big Show make more sense?

Daniel Bryan vs. The Great Khali

Josh Matthews tells Michael Cole he lives in a bubble! HA! Khali grabs Bryan and throws him into the corner before the bell. After it rings, Khali throws him in there again and hits a huge chop to the chest. That hurt me! Khali goes for the Khali Bomb, but Danielson counters into a Guillotine. Khali is down to his knees and shoves off Bryan. Bryan hits a series of kicks and Khali gets a choke, but Bryan kicks him in the head. Bryan hits a dropkick from the top rope and gets a two count. Bryan goes back up and Khali connects with a perfectly timed chop. Khali then hits the Khali Bomb and pins Bryan with one foot.

The Big Show's music hits and he comes out. He hits the ring and immediately looks at Bryan. Big Show wastes no time in chokeslamming Daniel Bryan and walks off laughing. Cole hopes they don't look at win/loss records when they vote. Josh says they should look at the tenacity of Daniel Bryan.

Winner: The Great Khali

We go to the Raw Rebound, featuring the Mr. McMahon vs. Bret Hart contract signing and the fake injury of Bret Hart's leg.

We get another promo video for David Otunga, which I think is the same one that we got during week one of NXT, just with highlights from NXT matches instead of FCW.

We see Michael Tarver walking backstage, looking for revenge on Heath Slater.

Heath Slater vs. Michael Tarver

We get highlights of Slater pinning Carlito and being the first rookie to pin a pro in a one on one match. The bell rings and they lockup and Slater gets a headlock and ducks under two clotheslines after being whipped off the ropes. Slater hits a spinning forearm, but gets backed into the ropes and Slater drills him with a knee. Slater gets sent across, but he grabs the ropes and sends Tarver to the floor. Tarver looks pissed and Slater hits a corkscrew tope to the floor! Damn! Tarver is rolled back in and he catches Slater off guard before slamming his head into the corner. Tarver locks in a neck vice and stops Slater as he gets up. Tarver goes off the ropes and gets hits with a dropkick. Tarver charges Slater, but Slater gets the boot up. Slater connects with a flapjack and goes to whip Tarver. It's reversed, but Slater leaps over and rolls up Tarver for the three count.

Backstage, Christian is celebrating next to Carlito. Tarver attacks Slater from behind and drills him with a T-Bone Suplex as we go backstage again to see Christian pissed and Carlito smiling. I expected him to say his catchphrase, but he never did.

Winner: Heath Slater

Backstage, Sheffield keeps interrupting Regal as Regal tries to help him. Regal just walks away as Sheffield keeps talking.

Wade Barrett (with Chris Jericho) vs. Skip Sheffield (with William Regal)

The bell rings and Wade gets a kick to the gut and backs Skip in the corner. Wade whips him across and Skip flips over the top rope to get the apron. Wade bounces out of the corner and hits a double axe handle off the top rope. The two go to the floor and Skip tries a powerslam, but Wade slips out and shove shim into the post. Skip blocks and Wade drives him back first into the ring post. Back inside, Wade locks in a submission hold, pulling back the arms and driving his foot into the back. Skip elbows out, but Barrett clubs down. Skip blocks a suplex and delivers one of his own. Skip climbs into the corner and Barrett misses a charge. Skip hits a series of clotheslines and follows with a bodyslam. Skip comes off the ropes and does a Ric Flair strut before hitting a splash for two. Wade reverses an Irish Whip, but Skip gets the elbow up. Skip goes to the second rope and looks over at Regal, allowing Barrett to pick the ankle and slam him to the mat. Barrett lifts up Skip in the Torture Rack position and slam him down to the mat. Wade makes the cover and gets the three count for the win.

Winner: Wade Barrett

I can't wait for Daniel Bryan to win. If that's what they're going for with this angle, then kudos to the WWE; they have succeeded. If this angle culminates with Michael Cole being put in the Cattle Mutilation, I will never doubt the awesomeness of the WWE again.

I thought the matches were all pretty good tonight. Most of the guys look like they're really improving from week to week. The finish of the Slater/Tarver match seemed to be a tad botched, but otherwise this show just keeps getting better.

Posted By: Schmidty (Guest)  on March 16, 2010 at 11:13 PM

Cue the people who think Daniel Bryan is ruined by the Rocky push.

Also, cue the people who say that this just proves Bryan isn't a star.

Both sides are stupid anyway.

Nothing about the awesome interaction between Matthews and Cole during the main event?

Darren Young really impressed me tonight. With a different look he could go somewhere.

For a second there you could see Jericho trying to keep a straight face. Funny stuff.

I called it on the second show, Bryan is going to job in everyone of his matches. Everybody knows he can wrestle, they are just doing the underdog role. I missed the first half of the show which is crap because anything Punk does is great.

This Heath Slater bullshit has to end. Fuck off back to FCW please.

Posted By: Amdrag 2 (Guest)  on March 17, 2010 at 12:10 AM

Thoughts: 1) Wade Barrett reminds me of JBL. Maybe it's the black trunks. 2) Sheffield's character reminds me of Hillbilly Jim. 3) Daniel Bryan's push has kinda lost a little luster. He needs to win soon in an underdog fashion or else no one will take him seriously. Khali was not the greatest of opponents for him today. Bryan tried, but ultimately failed, to carry him. 4) Darren Young needs to shave his head into a crew cut, wear orange T-shirts and wrestle in jean shorts. Then he'll get really over;)

Pairing Bryan with Khali makes total sense. Bryan has already proved he can put on a 5-star match with a good opponent, but workrate isn't as important in the WWE-style as it is in every other company AmDrag has appeared in. The fact of the matter is that Bryan will have to face slugs like Khali if he's going to make it in WWE because the "Big Man Attraction" isn't going anywhere. Bryan obviously still has work to do on that front.

The job of the big guy isn't to make the little guy look good. The job of the big guy is to be big. The job of the little guy is to make them both look good. Bryan will always be the little guy in WWE.

Posted By: Billzilla (Guest)  on March 17, 2010 at 03:19 AM

I swear it would be a weir sight seeing Darren Young getting a John Cena make over... dude is like the black version of him.

Ok show not great but I'm starting to really dig the concept... Daniel Bryan is clearly being built as the star you can just tell he is head and shoulders above the rest in the ring.

Posted By: Andrew Barbarash (Guest)  on March 17, 2010 at 03:42 AM

I think Heath Slater is looking like a potential WWE superstar more and more, he definately has some good moves and a great mentor. Bryan's just being jobbed probably out of spite for him getting over with fans without being in WWE, and well, outside of Barrett who I am still observing week to week the rest of 'em are pretty much throwaway guys (except Gabriel but he'll probably end up a spotmonkey somewhere) so, who knows.

Posted By: Black Scorpion (Guest)  on March 17, 2010 at 03:46 AM

I have a feeling Bryan is already slated for a longterm run in WWE, scripted to get his ass handed to him in NXT, then come back on RAW and kick the living hell out of The Miz.

Posted By: Scarry Larry (Guest)  on March 17, 2010 at 04:05 AM

Jericho:(to Josh)Talk about Barrett!
Josh: We are...
Jericho: MORE! Do your job!
Josh:(to Cole) Man, he hates you.
Cole: ME??

Josh has managed to do something that only JBL was ever able to do, make Cole listenable. As much as I hate to admit it, the announcing duo is beginning to gel... and you can tell that they are ENJOYING their job!

Four crushing defeats for Bryan now. At least the WWE recognises what the IWC doesn't: that Danielson sucks.

Posted By: The Bear (Guest)  on March 17, 2010 at 05:38 AM

Frustrating that the last 20 minutes of the show is jammmed with commercials.

Posted By: Guest#5613 (Guest)  on March 17, 2010 at 06:33 AM

"does anyone else get the feeling daniel bryan is going to beat miz for the us title
Posted By: Guest#4770 (Guest) on March 16, 2010 at 11:37 PM"

Could be and I reckon Bryan will cost ShowMiz the tag titles at Wrestlemania to set that up.

Posted By: 2000AD (Guest)  on March 17, 2010 at 07:57 AM

god that show sucked ass. long boring matches with green as hell talent.

do they have a fundamental issue with WRESTLING MOVES on this show or what? more then half the time its just kicks, punches, and basic slams. where are the promos, the interactions backstage, the so called "reality" concept seems to have been thrown out the window in favor of a second rate velocity.

lol at josh matthews almost saying bryan danielson and cole just stares at him

still, daniel bryan had the match of the night. they are gonna bury him as the "underdog", sort of like when they thought it was a good idea when they did that with cm punk, nearly killing any momentum he had prior and making the crowd take a piss break in his matches.

granted, the heel turn changed all that, but bryan is not as charismatic as punk and if they wont let him kick someones head in soon this will fail, big time.

Wasn't Cena supposed to be on?

Posted By: Smarky Smark (Guest)  on March 17, 2010 at 09:20 AM

If you look really close on the Jericho/announcers banter, and Jericho says to talk about his rookie "MORE",when he turns back to the ring he has a smirk on his face and Coleslaw chuckles.

Posted By: Guest#3177 (Guest)  on March 17, 2010 at 09:27 AM

uh, wasn't cena supposed to address the rookies?

Posted By: kamala (Guest)  on March 17, 2010 at 11:19 AM

I don't get the Daniel Bryan booking. He puts on a solid match with the World Champ, then gets squashed by a comedy act? What message does that send? How does it make Jericho look?

I also don't get the announcing. The heel/face dynamic changes every match. One minute, Matthews is defending Bryan for his courage, the next he's running down Tarver after Cole tells his sad story. "What, am I supposed to feel bad for him?" All they say during these matches is "He calls himself so-and-so," then they just make fun of them. I don't think it properly engages the audience.

The one thing the show does right is they send Jericho out with Barrett every time. Did anyone else notice how close Jericho came to cracking a huge smile after this exchange?

"Talk about Barrett!"

"We are..."

"MORE!"

Posted By: Talon (Guest)  on March 17, 2010 at 11:28 AM

I'm not gonna complain about the treatment of Danielson, but I just don't get what last night accomplished. The same could have been done with Show interfering DURING the match. Just what does seeing AmDrag go down to a chop and pinned by ONE FOOT do for him? I get the losing streak, I get Show's chokeslam, I can even buy a loss to Khali, but the pin just screamed "Fuck you, internet dicks."

Posted By: neverAcquiesce (Guest)  on March 17, 2010 at 12:11 PM

Daniel Bryan = Colin Delaney 2010

Posted By: Daniel Bryan sucks (Guest)  on March 17, 2010 at 12:28 PM

I guess you assholes forgot that Khali has pinned both (at the time) World Heavyweight Champion Rey Mysterio and the Undertaker, both clean, with a one-foot pinfall? Oh, he beat Daniel Bryan, who never faced anyone that massive, wah! You lose nothing by losing to Khali, especially when you're new to the WWE.

I admit, though, it would have made a lot more sense for him to fight Big Show, but at least Show showed (ha) up after the match.

Wade Barrett has the worst finishing move I've seen in a while. Just not very convincing to me. But Jericho's fantastic, even if he's having a hard time keeping a straight face.

And Heath Slater needs a haircut.

Not the best episode, but still good stuff. This is becoming my favorite weekly show.

Posted By: G-Walla (Guest)  on March 17, 2010 at 03:11 PM

Eh, NXT is still a good show, but they're losing steam. A few okay matches, they seem pretty high on Wade Barrett. The barbs between Josh and Cole were classic. Maybe it was just the smark in me but man did I get pissed when they jobbed out Daniles to Khali of all people. But guess they're going for the "he gave it his best/Miz is holding him back" push. Hopefully. Remmebe when we were all gushing that this thing was solely a tool to get Daniel Bryan over?

Jericho was classic during the main event, shades of the old Y2J there.

Posted By: Guest#2108 (Guest)  on March 17, 2010 at 04:01 PM

Jericho RULES!

and Khali almost botches the pinfall lol

Posted By: Random (Guest)  on March 17, 2010 at 05:05 PM

This is going to sound crazy, but do you think that Daniel Bryan's angle is for him to be eliminated in NXT, only to be recruited by Regal? Regal is disappointed with his rookie and it looks like Skip might be cut. Also, it would mean that throwaway line Bryan said in his intro promo about how he wished he had Regal as a mentor.

Posted By: Guest#8040 (Guest)  on March 17, 2010 at 07:45 PM

I just watched it. It was a decent show. I will continue watching this every week until it disappoints me like TNA has the last few weeks. I talked shit on this show when I first heard the concept but thats what happens when you talk shit before you see something. Ok heres what I think about these guys so far. I like Daniel Bryan, Wade Barrett, Justin Gabriel and Heath Slater. Darren Young is ok. Not that impressed with Michael Tarver, Skip Sheffield, and David Otunga. I wonder what they mean by evaluations in 2 weeks. They sort of made it sound like people get cut and then they didnt say anything like that again. I forget what their exact words were. One point of criticism is that some of the pros werent there. I would have liked for Miz and Bryan to have some interaction this week instead of Big Show filling in for Miz and chokeslamming Bryan. Bryan is clearly the best of this rookie class. Big things are in his future. Pretty good show. I've caught all 4 so far. Oh Michael Bauer one thing, could you give these matches star ratings? I would appreciate that. Thanks.

Posted By: guestwwe (Guest)  on March 17, 2010 at 09:04 PM

Probably the least exciting NXT so far. Bryan's booking has been great until this match--I'm really not sure what it accomplished. Getting laid out by Big Show at the end made sense, but what's the point of jobbing to face Khali? That should only serve to make the fans care less about him.

Sad to see Tarver's getting buried without a chance to prove himself!

Slater and Young looked surprisingly good in the ring this time around. As did Gabriel and Barrett. I wonder why ECW had such a worse roster than this show.

Posted By: Joe Schmoe (Registered)  on March 17, 2010 at 10:48 PM

I don't understand the hate on this show. I wish more people would watch it only because I'm reallly digging it and I don't want the ratings to hurt its chances of continuing on.

Oh and Darren Young is John Cena with a wig and spray tan. Its all part of the conspiracy to get Cena both the WWE and World Championships.

Josh Mathews busting out the "VINTAGE SKIP SHEFFIELD" line yet again was amazing so was the interaction of Jericho with the commentators

Posted By: Dfickens (Guest)  on March 18, 2010 at 08:01 AM

We have seen the show, Bauer. What you need to do is evaluate it and give us your opinion, instead of just retelling what happened.

Posted By: Guest#0423 (Guest)  on March 18, 2010 at 10:43 AM

If this angle culminates with Michael Cole being put in the Cattle Mutilation, I will never doubt the awesomeness of the WWE again.

Posted By: Schmidty (Guest) on March 16, 2010 at 11:13 PM

I WOULD PAY TO SEE THAT

Posted By: PAYIT (Guest)  on March 18, 2010 at 11:04 AM

Why are the dumbest people watching NXT?? Don't you get the angle here people!

Daniel Bryan has the most skill than anybody and is already the most over with his hatred of Miz and awesome match he had against Jericho. But he will continue to lose matches (or Miz losing their tag match) but it's Miz being a dick and feeding him to Khali. Basically, trying to make Bryan lose so he will be gone. But either he heads elsewhere or the other Pros keep him voted in because of his getting screwed. And then he starts owning everyone.

So please...stop bitching!! Think a little bit!!!

p.s. I like everyone else died with the classic "DO YOUR JOB" from Jericho. I knew it would blow up on 411...greatest moment!
